Stopped in here this past weekend, after taking the dog to run around at the park. I've been aware of Meshuggah Bagels for a long time. They've been there a long time, but I never had the occasion to actually stop in. They were busy, but the line moved quickly. They're efficient. After waiting about 5 minutes, I ordered 6 bagels and two schmears to go, and when I got home, we toasted a couple bagels and schmeared them up. We were so pleased with the food. I love this place. I found them during Covid when Einstein Brothers stopped allowing dining in. Staff are typically friendly and helpful and the coffee is excellent and the food is very good. Best of all is they have bialys in addition to a wide selection of bagels. My only (mild) complaint is that they're closed on Mondays. I respect a business it takes a day off to allow staff time to regroup. I highly recommend this location. I like the decor with kitchen items and a nice selection of Delft-like China on the walls. We have driven by here many times and finally stopped to try what has been called a real New York style bagel. Well, this suggestion was right on. This was an excellent bagel in NY style. Chewy outer shell and soft inside. It would stack up to any bagel shop in New York city. Everything was nice and fresh. So, with that said you are probably wondering why I only gave it 4 stars. Well, two reasons: First, we got an everything bagel, and a cinnamon and blueberry bagel. There were very few blueberries in the second bagel. Second, we wanted them with butter. It is under the heading of a schmear on your bagel. They have a lot of choices. The bagel itself was $2, the bagel with a schmear was $4.25. Which I would normally be fine with, however butter was in the schmear catelgory. So, for getting my bagel with a swipe of butter it was more than the bagel itself. Here is picture of the bagel. Meshuggah Bagels is to my knowledge a family owned and operated bagel business in KC that operates at least two locations within the metro, and specializes in authentic NY style bagels. If you're like me, and you haven't ever lived in NYC you might not yet understand the importance of a local bagel spot, just stop into this place to have your worldview on this breakfast staple rocked. When you walk in on a busy weekend morning you will be welcomed by the delightful scent of freshly baked bagels. If you're lucky you might even see them baking them in the back which is pretty cool if you're a midwesterner like myself unaccustomed to the process. The menu is pretty simple, bagels, schmear, and lox if you so desire. Personally, I go here for the homemade cream cheese as much as I do the bagels, though admittedly the bagels are the star of the show. With flavors like cookies and cream it really can enhance your overall bagel journey. The bagels themselves are always warm and while you can toast them, they don't really need it since the flavor and texture is so wonderful. As others have noted in reviews it's great to order ahead, I usually do this from bed, and then get myself out the door to pick it up, hot and ready when they open. If you don't order ahead be prepared to wait a bit in line and to dine at home. They do have some seating but it's a pretty small place and not really built in a way that makes dining in amazing. If you are wise enough to order ahead of time, then you can skip the last two items and you'll get five star bagels. If you want to just go enjoy a bagel and maybe a cup of coffee, then the line jams at the door, the table layout is still in COVID mode, and the service line seems to be in reverse order. Great bagels, from the simplest to add-in items (the Mrs. is a sucker for pumpernickel with plain schmear and laid) with plenty of options. I love me a sesame with a crazy amount of plain cream cheese and Meshuggah's comes through strong! Easy to find, easy to enjoy. I always thought the best bagel I've had was Bagels on the Hudson in Hoboken, NJ. The second best was Bagel Bin in Omaha, NE. This tops both of them. This was the perfect Everything Bagel - a bit hard on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Just like a bagel should be. The scallion schmear is soooo good. Incredible bagels!! It does not get any better than Meshuggah if you love a good bagel. We have tried a variety and all are incredible. We also enjoy getting a variety of schmears. Our favorites are jalapeno, toasted everything, and smoked salmon. My husband is a big fan of the pastrami smoked salmon. The only reason for four stars is that for $4.50 for a bagel with schmear, I always hope for more schmear than the scant amount they scrape on my bagel. I'm a schmear-hound, so maybe what they do is the "right" amount but dear lord please absolutely SMOTHER my bagel in that delicious garlic-dill or veggie spread. Great place! I went inside to check it out since I've never been before, and was surprised by how it busy it was on a Sunday mid-morning! I had toasted chocolate chip bagel with plain cream cheese, it was delicious. My one fault is that I forgot to specify that I wanted my cream cheese on the side for my other bagel, but I didn't know that the default was for it to go on it. The moment the bagels got to the car they were absolutely destroyed because of how amazing they smelled. I didn't even get a picture before I dug right in! These bagels are soft and moist and loaded with cream cheese. There are so many delicious flavor choices, both sweet and salty. Pair that with the plentiful cream cheese flavor options, you have a plethora of combinations to choose from. I promise you, not a single combination will disappoint. We waited an extra 10 or so minutes after our order was supposed to be ready, but the store was jam packed full of customers so it was understandable. And these bagels are definitely worth the wait - especially my personal favorite, the chocolate chip bagel with cinnamon sugar cream cheese. I will keep this short and sweet. It has been damn near impossible to find a decent bagel spot in Olathe. Unless I am going to a chain, I have given up on finding a morning spot to get a simple schmear and toasted everything bagel. What I did find was Meshuggah Bagels which is in OP. While it is a slightly longer drive from home, I grabbed a half dozen and one schmear for the road. Overall, I enjoyed these bagels, the dough flavor was good and the bounce to the bagel was what I was expected. My only critique was the everything bagel was slightly too salty for my liking but that is okay. I will still order a couple to bring home and pop into the freezer for a bagel kind of morning. I give this place a 4 out of 5 for creating a good bagel that hits the mark. IF only it was closer but that is a "me" problem. read more
