It is a part of a hotel lobby so if you are staying at the hotel- do not sit and eat food from outside the restaurant or you'll be informed that's not abiding by the rules. George, Juan , Ryan, Fena, Alajandro, Bryan and the rest of the staff are amazing as well minus one " Rose " . Came in today and just poor customer service. This is the second time she has had a nonchalant attitude and doesn't care about the customers experience. Simply asked to sit in the lobby to keep an eye out for someone and was refused. I left and came back which I shouldn't and Alejandro took care of me no problem. She gave him a hard time and then my food came out slapped together. We've come to Mesler several times now, the food is decent. However, the service is TERRIBLE!! This could be a great restaurant if their customer service was up to par. Ordered an appetizer with entrees. We received the appetizers but the entrees never came. Our server never came back to check in on us. We asked a server from a different table if he could get our server. The manager (Larry), came out instead. While apologetic, Larry was very disinterested in the feedback being given. When I was forced inside due to the bees I asked for another drink. The manager refused to comp my drink and basically said it was my fault since I decided to sit outside. My husband and I had reservations 2hrs before a play, our drinks and food took forever to come out, we actually ordered dessert while we were still eating dinner to make sure we had enough time to make it to our play. We had to wait a while before getting seated even thought it wasn't crowded at all. The omelets did not come with toast or potatoes but only with salad, which is annoying imo. My husband and I dropped by the posh-decorated restaurant in the afternoon on Mother's day. We chose to see at the lounge where gives ppl a more relax mood. Since it is on Mother's day, the lunch menu provides Mother's day special only. But we are fine with them as there are enough choices there already, including salad, soup and entrees. During my visit to this location, I was setting up a meet with my friend to study for our nursing exam. When I came in with my book bag and asked the host if we can sit outside she stated that i had to wait for my guess to arrive. I then sat down and waited for her to come. when my guess came 15 minutes later she then sat us down. while pulling out our laptops the waiter brought over some water then left. He came back 2 minutes and 24 seconds later and asked if we wanted something to drink other than water and we stated that we were okay. He left again, but shortly returned and asked if we wanted something to eat and we stated not at this moment. Shortly after he left the manager JUAN came over and asked if we were going to order some food and we stated not at this moment thank you. He then stated that he is going to have to ask us to leave and that we cannot treat this place like a study area if we aren't going to order anything. we explained to him that we weren't going to order anything at this time, but we will later. he told us no, if you were going to order something then you should have did that in the beginning. my friend then stated that she will get a soda and he declined and stated that we have to leave. the issue that i have is that we come to this restaurant very often and have studied there less than a week ago. we should not be treated that way. On our way out we seen a Caucasian women with her laptop out doing work with only a glass a water, the same lady that i saw when i first got there 20 minutes prior while waiting for my friend. after leaving and driving past 30 minutes later looking into the window this same women is now with a guess. this means that she was waiting for someone. So doesn't that mean they sat her while she waited for her guess the same thing that they stated i could not do? I don't believe that racially profiling should exist at this establishment nor do i believe it should be happing in the heart of Hyde park, a place which is centered around black America. this was truly unacceptable and I will never go back again. read more

This place is fancy, and I love it. It's so wonderful to have a fine dining experience like this on the south side. The space is open and beautiful, and while certainly upscale it felt relaxed and not terribly pretentious. We had the deviled eggs and crab cakes and they were both tasty. Went for breakfast. Place was pretty empty which is ok as it was early on a weekday. Beautiful interior etc. and I mean beautiful. Most folks probably at work anyway. Had the scrambled eggs bacon potoroos toast platter. And it was ok. I realized or thought after the fact it appeared pre made you know u can tell when eggs are just scrambled or not. So it was not that great. I don't know some people rave so I may go back for dinner but I will be on the look out for pre cooked food. I hate when restaurants do that. Mesler was just spectacular for dinner. The ambiance and service were perfect. All of the staff were friendly and attentive. The decor and overall atmosphere was welcoming and friendly. Exactly what we need and want in the area. The food was on-par with as good as it gets in the area. Most dishes were good - the salmon and steaks were both good, not excellent. Overall things were a bit salty, but that could have just been out taste. The crab cake appetizer was nice, though not especially innovative. The cauliflower appetizer was both innovative and delicious - a highlight of the meal. The cocktails were spectacular - I highly recommend the Old Fashioned and Rob Roy - both standouts at our table. Desserts were good - again nothings especially unique, but good. We had our kids with us (who are generally well-behaved) - but they were very accommodating for such as nice restaurant. They have a decent kids menu and had their food out super quick - which kept the little ones happy while we enjoyed our meal. In summary, Mesler was great and has a ton of potential. Great staff, great atmosphere, cocktails as good as it gets in Chicagoland, and decent food. I would say if they continue to improve and refine their menu, Mesler could compete to be the go-to in Hyde Park. Given my one time here and my many, many visits to Promontory, Messler competes on the cocktail and wine front, wins on ambiance and service, and loses out on overall food quality and creativity. However, both are great and I look forward to the increasingly competitive food scene in the area! read more

I first went to Mesler when it opened last year. The food was unimpressive and the service was extremely slow. We dined for 2.5 hours when each member of the party ordered only 3 dishes. Even after repeatedly asking for bread, the wait staff failed to bring us any. I attributed these lapses to the juvenescence of the restaurant. Unfortunately, I was proven wrong half a year later. The service was again slow and the food subpar. We ended up cancelling a dish because it took so long that we had already finished our meal. Don't let the flashy decor fool you. This restaurant is not worth your time or money. Instead, try Virtue a block away--the experience there is actually worth your dollar. The food service in the bar is very slow as well. Our party of 6 adults and a two-year old toddler had a lovely dinner last evening to celebrate a birthday. Mesler has the makings of becoming a destination restaurant. Rarely do you find such a good restaurant in a hotel. The deco is sumptuous, very cozy and welcoming. Felt like being in the library of an elegant home. Our group had a broad select of appetizers and main courses. For starters we had the crab cakes (excellent), beef and shiitake brochettes (very good), crispy cauliflower (excellent), chicken wings (terrible - so dry and over cooked), fries with garlic mayo (excellent), charred broccoli (good), Mesler greens (excellent), Little gems (excellent). Mains - NY strip steak (excellent), seafood pasta (way too salty and other than the shrimp, seafood was cut too small and disappeared in the sauce. Desserts were a huge disappointment. Wine was not adequately chilled. Our server and bussing staff were excellent but could not handle the full dining room. The kitchen also needs more help. Long wait for our food. The table next to us cancelled their entrees due to the long wait times. With all said, we would definitely return. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner last night! We ate at the restaurant, not the bar. The restaurant was about half full but the bar and lounge area were hopping. The restaurant ambiance was really nice. Not too loud. There is a wall separating the bar from the restaurant. In terms of food: the crab cakes were delicious. Mostly meat and not much breading. The pork porterhouse was perfectly seasoned. The sausage rigatoni was a smaller portion but tasty. For dessert, we had the tart with plums and lemon sorbet. Everything was delicious but my favorite was the crab cakes. Only thing that I would change is the entrance to the restaurant. We entered through a side door and it was a little confusing trying to find the hostess table. Probably the issue comes from the restaurant being within a hotel. Maybe they could have a greeter at the side entrance to direct people to the hostess. read more

Horrible experience, visited here to sit on the patio for food and drinks. The drinks were served in plastic cups but we had glass plates for dining. When we requested for our drinks to be served in glassware. Our server only stated that it's our policy due to safely reasons we can't serve glassware. We asked to speak to a manager, she gave us the same answer but had a bad attitude. Our server never came back to check on us but sent someone else to bring the check. I still don't understand how a downtown restaurant or other Hyde park restaurants can serve glass on the patio but not in Hyde Park. We then expressed this concern to the male manager and he just brushed it off. The management staff needs significant improvement. Additionally, it is important to note that when you take a manager who clearly only has experience managing college bars and puts them in a luxury property the result is poor service and bad decisions. read more

I've been here for brunch and dinner. The interior is beautiful and would be great for dates and semi-formal occasions. For brunch, I've had: Omelet B, signature potatoes, pork schnitzel, and chicken & waffles. They were okay, not remarkable, but I liked the dinner food a lot better. For dinner, I have had the deviled eggs, sausage rigatoni, and the bucatini. These were all fantastic! The bucatini was a vegetarian dish, I think. The star, though, was the apple tart we had for dessert. Holy shit, that was scrumptious. It was thin and crispy with the perfect amount of sweetness. I was pretty full by the time it came to our table (it takes 15 minutes, because it's baked to order) but I couldn't have enough and wish I could eat that every day. After checking out "If Beale Street Could Talk" my Homegirl and I needed a drink due to the movie being so heavy. So we decided to check out the Mesler. Since the 53rd st renaissance, I try my hardest to stay away from the area. Growing up in HPK all my life, I hate that now I cant even find a parking space. The crowd while there was very diverse ranging from mid 30's to a few 60 yr olds. Service started off rocky but a few things saved our visit. Our first Bartender, Dale was interesting but came through with a slice of cake for us to share. He admitted he got the cake somewhere off of 53rd street. Thomas, really held us down! We started off with a bottle of Riesling. For our next round Thomas inquired about what we usually like to drink and gave us cocktails based off our preferences. I had the charcuterie board and my friend had the wings. I wouldve like more options as far as charcuterie and a tad bit more dijon mustard but overall it wasnt a bad board. I enjoyed myself , to the point where I looked up rates and will be staying in the next couple of days for a quick Staycay. read more

This is one of my favorite bars in Hyde park. It's very classy, quiet, and inviting. It is on the expensive side compared to other bars and it's a different vibe. No music, older crowd, it's connected to a hotel so lots of business people. This is more of a date or business setting than a place you go to hangout and get drunk. This is more of a place people go for meetings or to meet someone and have one or 2 drinks and talk. Not many distractions (no music, only one tv, etc), so prepare to constantly converse with whomever you're with. I would never go here to turn up but, nights that my lady and I want to get out of the house but, don't want to do too much. This is at the top of the list. read more

I've been to Mesler only once - enjoyed it. To start off with the con, they only serve the hamburger in the lounge. That is what the three of us wanted, so we had to move from the dining room to the lounge. It's basically the only menu item they don't serve in the dining room, and I think that's unfortunate. I made reservations to celebrate my birthday @ Mesler...knowing it's a holiday weekend and we are in Phase 4 of the re-opening and folks are wanting to get out and enjoy themselves. I let them know it was a birthday celebration and who the party was that was celebrating when asked. On arrival I was told the menu was limited. Upon review there were 2 items that I could actually eat: caesar salad and lobster roll. Not my idea of a celebration dinner. I spoke with the manager...I explained my situation and disappointment the menu. Futher, that no one called to inform me the the menu would be limited and may not have food items normally associated with a "fine" dining experience. The manager asked three times if the was anything on the menu I could eat...he was obviously not actively listen to my concern. Never offer me compensation (for my inconvenience) until I asked! I was really disappointed as dinner was about the only thing I could do to enjoy my special day. I would think twice before going there if your celebrating anything special...if you want hamburger and fries, chicken wings or salad...you may do ok. read more
