This place just opened and we decided to try it out on a Friday night. There was a really short wait and the staff was friendly. The chips and salsa they give you at the table is great. The salsa has a little kick but definitely not super spicy. Their menu is pretty good, not a ton of choices but it hits all the major Mexican bullet points. Our waitress was extremely friendly. They have outdoor seating as well as indoor and the interior is clean and well decorated. Food wise I was hoping the menu would offer more genuine meals as opposed to the same generic offerings that rochester has to offer in Mexican cuisine. Prices were slightly high and I was confused as the website lists happy hour from 2pm-6pm, however, when I asked our server about drink specials she seamed confused. The margarita was good sized and definitely had a decent amount of alcohol in it. Complimentary chips were very good but the salsa was a little bland. Over all a nice addition to Gates and I hope they improve on their menu and happy hour specials. We will be back and wish this new business the best of luck. read more

Not good for vegetarians. Typical Mexican food. My bf and his friends got the 'street tacos' and thought they were authentic (they only had meat options). We went for dinner last night. The owner greeted us with a big smile and a funny joke. We were seated promptly in the "hungry section". Chips and salsa were complimentary. I ordered the steak fajitas. They came quickly and were delicious. My wife ordered Baja salad and she loved it as well. The portions were so big we had to get some of it to go. We live in the area and want so bad to have a cute little Mexican place where we can grab dinner and a margarita. I had the fajitas and my husband had the burrito puerco. As an appetizer we ordered the guacamole mexicano which was made fresh right before serving. There was a drink menu on the table and they did have a wide selection of adult beverages. My husband and I loved everything. The service was excellent, the place was small but very cute. There were tables to eat outside, but it was chilly so we are inside. We went around 4pm. Beautiful and inviting patio (with umbrellas for shade!). LARGE refreshing margaritas with different flavor options! The indoor atmosphere takes you right to Mexico with the music and decor. Large booths perfect for families but still intimate for date nights! The staff was friendly and helpful guiding me through the menu! Manager was around as well - which is always appreciated and welcoming. I had the guacamole, soup of the day, and Baja salad for lunch. Walked in and heard ppl yelling in Spanish from the kitchen--usually means the food will be good. Place was packed so attempted to get a drink from the spatially challenged bar tender who had a tattoo that said "T-Gunnz" on it or something I couldn't really see it. If he spent as much time actually bar tending as he did hitting on the blonde girl with anorexia in front of her boyfriend he'd be halfway decent. They blasted some Selena over the speakers, possibly as a jab against cross town rivals Salenas? Are they in some kinda Mexican food slam war? Who knows, I'm just posing the question. I ordered my food in the least white sounding way possible and the waitress didn't laugh at me. +1. Her name was Lumbar or something. There was a little kid with a faux hawk running around slapping ppls legs that made me laugh. Call it ambiance. Meh- it's not the worse Mexican food but there is definitely need to improve as far as customer service. Our waitress was most uninterested. Did not bring plates out for appetizers, didn't come back to check on us or offer us refills. The food was ok. My wife and I just tried Mesquite Grill. WE normally do not choose Mexican cuisine! This was an attempt to try something new and it is close to home. Our Server Daniel helped us to understand the menu and he also made great recommendations. The food was so good he let us sample a soup that had three meats and beans in it I forget the name now but so good. And the rest of the meal was the same. I'm glad we have a new option in Gates. Chose Mesquite for my birthday dinner based off Yelp rating. It was definitely a dinner I will not soon forget. The margaritas used mix. The salsa which came with chips before we ordered was OK. The food was the worst I have ever experienced, Mexican or otherwise. The kids ordered burritos which showed up as enchiladas. My husband ordered a vegetarian combo which showed up as a steak enchilada. I was not served any entree. Happy birthday to me. When we were finished with the meal the waitstaff did bring something that could have resembled my chilies rellenos but did not contain cheese, or any discernible flavor. Absolutely the worst restaurant experience of my life. The waitstaff claimed they were short-staffed, which could explain the horrible service but does not account for the terrible food. My 8-year-old argues for a higher star rating because the waitstaff were incredibly polite and apologetic. I agree that they recognized the low quality of the service--but on exit we found 3 waiters holding up the counters in the kitchen-- with food all over the kitchen floor. Not something I can forgive. i recently visited for my mom birthday on Cinco de Mayo. We went at a time where it wasn't extremely busy around 2 pm. The food was good but service was not good at all. It was a nice day out and our waitress was more concerned with standing in the doorway or outside. She never came to check on us. We ordered queso for our chips but did not receive it until our meal came out which was delivered by a waiter who was so nice and brought out our food and offered us more salsa and chips. I saw more attentive waitresses waiting on other people so I don't want to say I won't be back. I will just choose another waitress. read more

We really did not enjoy. The food was ordinary at best. My husband ordered a combo and it not only looked awful and bland....it was awful and bland. I ordered a burrito supremeo?? or something like that and it was covered in lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream....why?? The staff was friendly and that is the only reason I was able to give 2 stars. Really great food and service! I ordered Chilaquiles and I requested it to be really hot/spicy! The waiter brought out an extra bowl of Halbanero sauce and poured it over the top. Really good and hot! The plate was not overwhelmed with rice and beans like so many places do - it was just right. My partner had a vegetarian Taco salad and he added black beans to round it. Our waiter went above and beyond and was extremely nice and welcoming. My partner and I have hit up every Mexican restaurant in the Rochester area and Mesquite Grill has a top spot on our ratings list now. I even asked the waiter what the sauce was called so that I could ask for it again the next time I dine there and he wanted to give me a side order to take home! For 14.00, I ordered the "Street tacos". When the meal arrived, I thought it was a sample or they had the wrong table. I mean this "dinner" was miniscule. They give you 3, 4 inch corn tortillas with a spoon full of chicken. I left there still hungry. Very yummy. Was able to sit outside on a perfect September night. Mango Margarita was amazing. Both of our meals were delicious (enchiladas and fajitas) and the fried cheesecake for dessert. Reasonable priced for the quality and quantity. Music was a bit loud to talk over, inside was very busy and congested. Not sure the experience would have been the same if we sat inside, as it was a nice Friday at 6pm. Very excited to have a good sit down Mexican place near by. I had high hopes for a westside Mexican restaurant, and this place did not meet those hopes. I got the vegetarian fajitas and they put California blend veggies in with the peppers and onions. No, I don't want broccoli and cauliflower and carrots and squash with the peppers, onions, and mushrooms. The salsa is bland and the chips aren't amazing either. The refried beans were OK but the rice was bland. My husband said his was OK and he would've liked it better if it wasn't $40 for two dinners and a side of queso blanco. read more

I am originally from El Paso, TX and am always on the lookout for authentic Mexican food. Have not found many places in Rochester worth going to. I was so excited to try this place because it's close to home. I was not disappointed! I got the chicken flautas, which were amazing. Super juicy, tender, and delicious. The frijoles were also great--been SO long since I had really good beans. The rice is a bit different--not your yellow or red rice--more of a beige color with peas and little flavor. Almost like a pilaf flavor. It was pleasant but didn't have the same level of awesome as the rest of the meal. My mom got the tacos which were also excellent. My test is always to order a tamale. Theirs was SUPER good and I could tell it was fresh and made well. Excellent corn masa to meat ratio and it was moist and flavorful. I am super excited to go back!!! read more
