After returning from a long day at the Griffith observatory, stopped by this place due to stellar reviews. We are from San Francisco bay area and naturally Indian food snobs. We ordered a kabab platter and garlic naans. Chicken tikka and chicken tandoori were ok, a bit burned but nothing too bad. The lamb was a disaster. There was a single lamb piece which was tough as nails. Either old meat reheated or some other. I love lamb chops and too disappointed. Luckily I did not order lamb chops, it would have been money down the drain. The server was courteous however. The restaurant was empty at 9pm on a Sunday night. I guess it is kinda away from the major tourist spots. I didn't try any curry there so this review is only for their tandoori platter. read more

This was my first time visiting. My partner who came here over a decade ago suggested that I would love the food here. It was a friday morning around 11am. They barely opened so we were the first customers. Interesting interior decor. Nice and cozy. We were welcomed by Mohammed a nicer elderly individual. After looking through the menu, my partner went with the chicken tikka marsala mild spicy. I chose the lamb vindaloo spicy. Appetizer was onion bhaji. He quicky brought out the crispy papadum compliment with my mint and red chutney. It was delicious and a nice starter. Something nice to munch on while we waited for the onion bhaji. The bhaji was good, a little different from what i was used to. I guess south indian cuisine is a bit different from the north. Regardless it paired well with the mint chutney. Next the main course. Wow! The chicken tikka marsala was pretty buttery and tasty. My partner loved it saying the consistency has not changed from over a decade ago. To me that is solid. My vindaloo was delicious with a good amount of spice level. You could taste the flavor without dying from spice heat. Again a little different from what i am used to. Since i am of burmese decent, i am used to dryer oily curries but i am sure everyone's palette is different. Both dishes paired really well with the saffron rice amd garlic naan. We ended the meal with a complimentary ras malai, on the house from Mohammed. Such a nice gentleman. The desert was just what we needed to end the meal on a hot day. I'll start off by saying my photos are awful! The food was great and photos do not do it justice. It's a little tricky eating in red light but we sat in this section by choice. When we walked in it was pretty late evening and we were greeted and told to pick where to sit. Our server was helpful! We had someone with a gluten allergy and I am vegan. We had plenty of options. We got a coconut curry, Bengali vegetables, naan, pickle. I understand this part of California is older and it can be costly to do repairs, but I would suggest doing a little detailing in the kitchen and bathroom areas. The BEST indian food in LA!! The owners of this restaurant are so sweet. They gave excellent recommendations, and even brought us a complimentary appetizer! All the food is very reasonably priced, and absolutely delicious. The mango lassi was the STAR of the meal. It was just the right amount of sweet, and you can tell the mangoes they use are extremely fresh. We got the paneer tikka masala, the lamb biryani, and the chicken korma - all the flavors were so distinct and SO good. We got a rice pudding at the end for dessert, and that was also extremely flavorful, and very cheap while still satisfying that sweet tooth at the end of a meal! I'd definitely come back here again! I'd been meaning to try this spot forever and finally made it happen. Turns out, the hype (at least in my head) was justified. The place has been around for 48 years which already tells you they're doing something right. The setup is mostly booth seating. One side has this dim red lighting, the other is brighter with white light...kind of a cool split depending on your mood. Also, there's a small parking lot in the back which is a win because street parking around here can be a gamble. Best surprise? Zero corkage. Yep, you can bring your own bottle and they don't charge you for it. That alone makes it worth a visit. We brought sake (random choice, but it actually paired really well with the food) and it ended up being a great call. We ordered the dinner combo for 2 and it was a ton of food: veggie samosas, veggie curry, chicken korma, rice, chicken tandoori, garlic naan, plus dessert. Everything came out solid, no weak links. If you're wondering whether Anarkali is worth a visit, here's my perspective: I've been eating here since 1999, and after all those years, it's still the standard by which I judge every other Indian restaurant. I've had Indian food across the United States and in many different parts of India itself. I wasn't expecting my favorite to remain a restaurant on Melrose after all that traveling, but here we are. Nothing else has topped it. Anarkali is woven into the story of my wife and me. One of our earliest dates was here. Soon it became a weekly tradition, then twice a week. We were scraping together every dollar we could to buy our first house, but Anarkali always made the budget. Some things are necessities! The saag paneer is my forever favorite: pillowy-soft cubes of paneer in a velvety spinach gravy that's earthy, aromatic, and bursting with layers of spice. Every bite feels comforting and vibrant at the same time. The chicken tikka masala is just as memorable. Tender pieces of marinated chicken in a luscious tomato-based sauce that's tangy, smoky, creamy, and packed with layers of flavor. We order everything at the HOT spice level, which leaves us with a blissful spice buzz endorphin rush that lingers long after the meal is over. Throw in buttered naan, samosas, fragrant basmati rice, the carrot soup, and finish with their cool, creamy rice pudding, and you've got one of my favorite meals OF ALL TIME. The owner and staff have always treated us with genuine warmth. After so many years, that's become as much a part of the experience as the food. We moved away from Los Angeles years ago, but every trip back starts the same way: we find time for Anarkali. Some traditions are too good to give up. read more

This might just be my favorite Indian restaurant in LA. I was lured in by the BOGO deal on Uber Eats for a chicken tikka masala and I've never looked back. Their curries are all so aromatic and flavorful. The naan is soft and pillowy and has the perfect char from the tandoori oven. And I can't check out without throwing in an order of potato samosas or coconut shrimp. I've only ordered delivery so I can't speak much on the service or ambiance but I'm very eager to come in soon and check Anarkali out in person. A week or so ago, I visited Anarkali, a restaurant I hadn't been to in some years. Just as I remembered, the food was great--each dish beautifully presented. The papadams are particularly good and spicy and every other dish delicious as well. What really made the experience stand out, though, was the service. I wish I could give this place 5 starts because the hospitality and service is SO great. Truly, they are extremely kind and generous, but I want to be honest about my food experience for other foodies. When we came to eat here around a 3:00 pm on a Monday, it was completely empty, so I was a little nervous about what quality of food we would be served. To start off, we ordered the onion bhajji, samosas and chaat fries. The samosas and bhajji were so beyond cold even though the flavor was really good. On the menu, they have masala fries and chaat fries. Chaat is a dish with yogurt and chutneys and spices over potatoes or tortillas, but what we got was fries with masala on them, aka chaat MASALA. Why have two different forms of fries on the menu when they both mean the same thing??? Chaat masala is masala.... So why have two different listings for the same thing and mislead people? SO CONFUSING LOL We were warned the chicken tikka masala would be sweet, and that was okay because we also asked if we can still make it the spiciest they have on top of that. What we received was the sweetest, blandest dish in Indian history. The flavors really confused me as an Indian person used to Indian flavors. We also ordered the saag and that was okay. The garlic and cheese naans were also good. The best thing we received was the sizzling chicken tikka. It was truly cooked to perfection. For dessert, we ordered gulab jamun and kheer. Tell me why they gave us kheer with the gulab jamun INSIDE of it??? It's listed as two different dishes, why are you combining them???????? This place exceeded our expectations! I made a reservation for 14 a couple days in advance by calling the restaurant. We were celebrating a birthday on a Thursday night at 8pm. Parking: there's a small lot in the back of the restaurant but lots of street parking (meter). Ambience: the place itself is small but can fit about 6 tables plus a large table in the middle of the restaurant that fit my party of 14 perfectly. It was pretty empty when we went so that made our service really quick. Mr. Mohammed was the best! He was attentive, quick, and kind. While he was taking our orders he took them down on separate tickets so during the end of the dinner when we paid we all paid separately which was really convenient. Our water glasses were never empty and he always triple checked that we all got our food. Since it was my friends birthday he gave her a large special plate and even gave it to us on the house!
