This is a very well-kept rest area that shows off the stark beauty of the high desert in northern Arizona. There's a large, long lot for truck parking. We can always find a place to park, at least during the day. The restrooms are nicely maintained. There are vending machines. There are sidewalks that make a great way to get out and stretch your legs. It's convenient if you prefer not to stop in Flagstaff. You can stop here instead and possibly keep your downtime short instead of navigating traffic and intersections in Flagstaff. read more

Make sure it's the actual meteor rest stop off the 40, and not the one on 2nd st. We stopped IN Winslow because my GPS showed this near the Winslow art museum. NO RESTROOMS OR REST AREA. JUST A HOTEL AND MUSEUM. Not sure why that comes up as the stop. read more

Such a great place to encounter. They have a theatre to enlighten you to how the crater was formed. They have a fun simulator to try. Short walk along the rim with a guide who was very in formative. I'd suggest a visit to those who are curious.... Or not. read more

For a public rest area it was very nice. Clean and stocked with toilet paper. The picnic area is covered and a massive dog run area.

Very accessible for handicapped and the huge rock sculpture of nature, lends itself to an atmosphere where one gets excited about the Tour of this Crater. Handicapped elder $27.00. I got permission to photograph the what's available area, however I won't be touring without my deceased Assistance Dog, Tucker, who passed away at age 17. Women's room had no waiting, hot water & soap, and hot air blowers for hands AND face. Outside, vending machines were behind bars. Don't know if they worked. Liked the rock formations, and picnic areas. Very nice! read more

The oasis of rest stops so far in my lifetime. climate was safe. Large, up to date, several vending machines. Largest and clean bathrooms I've ever seen and rest up the architecture of the rock areas amazing great place for the kids to climb looks like goes on for a few acres very safe looking very well lit many places to park in as I said there are several different bathroom locations as well covered uncovered very nice we're here about 3 o'clock in the morning and felt pretty safe and comfortable with my family. We explored, I took a nap on the clean benches. read more

Reading all the other nice reviews, I don't know what the hell happened to this rest stop. It was the worst one we stopped at between Illinois and Arizona. If you are a woman you may want to consider peeing like a man. Otherwise, hold it until the next stop. read more

My parents always drive from Texas to Las Vegas and stop at this rest stop, my mom in particular is always telling me how unique and pretty it is. Her favorite time is winter when there is a bit of snow covering the rocks. Today when we stopped, the sun is shinning, there is a bit of chill in the air but no snow. It's bright and clean and is really stunning with huge boulders that look like someone just picked them up and tossed them out and where ever they landed is what we see. There are several picnic tables, covered and set off to the side, in the center is a large covered area leading to the restrooms, also very clean. This is a great rest stop, large enough to service the big haulers, and the regular vehicle traveler like us. The signs we found humorous, right next to the sign showing you the designated pet walking area, is a smaller sign warning of poisonous snakes and insects! If I had a pet, I don't think I'd be walking it in that area! read more

The scenery is amazing. Arizona has the most beautiful sky's in the world. I haven't been everywhere in the world but Arizona sky's are burned in to my mind. This is the cleanest rest area I have been to also. The red rocks surrounding it are really cool. They couldn't have picked a better spot to put a rest area. Families were climbing up and over the rocks and taking photos. A great way to get your kids tuckered out for the rest of the trip home. Wiener dog didn't get out of the car to go potty and I didn't push the issue. I was very happy I stopped here. The country was gorgeous. read more

Nice enough rest area in the middle of nowhere, somewhere between Winslow and Flagstaff but really close to the Meteor Crater. Clean bathroom but zero shade. Nice with the rocks (try not to have your kids climbing on them) and easy to get back onto the highway with a really long accelleration ramp. read more

Why call it Meteor Crater? It is nowhere near the crater, you cannot get to the crater from there, nor is there even a sign that indicates where you could find the crater. Hint: if you stand on the rock outcropping behind the buildings, you can just make out the crater rim, slightly west of due south, five miles away. But I suppose calling it the "Meteor Crater Rest Area" sounds a little better than calling it the "Nothing To Do With Meteor Crater Rest Area". If you are reading this, chances are like me you pulled over expecting to find the crater. Like me, you've been had. You have to go west on the Interstate a mile or so until you see an off ramp that says "Meteor Crater Exit 1 Mile". For some reason, the crater, which is privately owned, likes to keep things like distances and admission fees a secret until you have committed to the six-mile drive. Back in Texas, we have names for such people. The admission fee is $15 at time of writing, and they charge that fee right up to quitting time at 5:00 PM. Fifteen bucks is about three times what the experience is worth. read more

Very nice rest area (stopped westbound). Scenic with plenty of parking. Just a great place to have a quick stop to stretch your legs or have some lunch. I had my RV so I did not use any of the facilities. There is NO dump station if you're looking for one here. Appeared very well maintained and of course, easy on and off of I-40. read more

Best restrooms ever! Warm (like with heaters! it's February) new tile, so fresh so clean. Soap dispensers full. Great photo ops next to red rocks cropping around the rest stop. Beautiful. Watch out for snakes says the sign. Fines for defacing the rocks- thank goodness there's no graffiti at least that I could see. Nice picnic tables with open air shelters. read more

This place was great. My family and I got to go while we were visiting flagstaff, and we were very impressed with the crater and how big and beautiful it is. This is something every family with a geologist should see. The museum was full of space and meteor fun facts, as well as interactive exhibits. The tour guides were also great and shared a surplus of info with us about the history of the crater and how it was used for Apollo 13 training. We also had time during the outside tour to take some great family photos. Finally this sight is great for kids and families because they have an interactive 4D ride that takes you on a mini space exploration and shares with you a science lesson on how Meteors are made. Overall I highly recommend visiting and you can even take a piece of the meteor home as a souvenir from the gift shop. read more
