When planning an event much is left to chance when it comes to the venue, food, and service--but the team at Metro Bis were amazing. From the very beginning, their communication and attention to detail during the planning stages was incredible. Courtney was so responsive and helpful, it took the stress out of the planning, as I felt she had it under control. On the day of the event, they all went above and beyond, even helping us carry bags to and from the car. The table was set beautifully, the service was friendly and prompt, the timing of the courses was flawless, and the food was absolutely delicious--everyone at our party was raving about it! My family enjoyed Mothers Day brunch at this elegant restaurant; they offered a prix fixe menu. For starters we noshed on green olives and almonds in warm olive oil, crusty bread, and delicious house-made hummus. My entrée was perfectly seared scallops atop creamy mashed potatoes with a kick of horseradish. Others had seared salmon on risotto and beef short ribs. The kiddos had Mac and cheese bites to start, then a hamburger (perfectly cooked to his specifications) and crispy chicken tenders. We've been looking forward to trying this restaurant for a long time and no better occasion than our anniversary! The restaurant marked the occasion by giving us a rose in a bud vase to take home! The menu is a prefix 3 course. We had the beet salad and the spinach salad to start-- nice portion, fun elements added to the beets like dried figs and whipped goat cheese! For entrees we had the sautéed shrimp and the braised short ribs-- hubs thought the polenta had too much parmesan but I love it! The shrimp was over black rice and bok choy-- wish the chili oil gave a bit more heat but was very tasty. For desserts, we had the vahlrona chocolate mousse and the apple tart-- the mousse is super rich! Also, as an anniversary surprise, the kitchen brought over a pistachio panna cotta-- this was absolutely stunning and should be on the regular menu! Thank you, Metro Bis, for a great meal with exceptional service and ambience. It's a prix fixe menu with a good variety of choices at a reasonable price. Cocktails were 12.95 and up. I chose the country pate for starters while my mate chose the beet salad. Both were delicious. The only note on the beet salad would be adding a few greens to the plate. I loved all the goodies that came with the pate. (More candied fennel would have not gone to waste.) Mains were the crab cakes and shrimp and grits. Big and perfectly cooked shrimp were the stars of my bowl with the cheesy grits complementing nicely. The crab cakes were delicious too. I want to emphasize that portions are good sized. 3 courses for $60 doesn't mean they skimp! I'm a dessertaholic so the fact that I ended up with a 3 course dessert experience, as well, was a boon. 3 courses because I got half of my honey's chia semifreddo, my own choice of the pistachio cream puff AND little tastes of the chocolate mousse from the kitchen! Pure dessert heaven. We will definitely be back. My 50th high school reunion will be held at Metro Bis in October, and while I won't be attending I know that the GMHS class of 1975 is in for a treat. read more

We had been going to Metro Bis for over 30 years going back to the original owner, Claude Maurice. We hadn't been there in a few years. We stopped going because the menu seemed stale and hadn't change but decided to give it another try with some friends on a summer evening. Recently went to Metro bis for the fixed menu dinner. No complaints there, it is a beautiful place, with good service and an adult vibe. Food was great as usual. The beef soup was outstanding and my wife and I had 2 different main dishes, the person risotto and the beef tenderloin. Both were excellent, although I wish my risotto was hotter, it was just warm. For dessert we had the brookie, which you can't go wrong. Each meal is about $60 and includes 3 courses. We got married 3 years ago at Metro which was absolutely amazing. The staff, the chef , the food and atmosphere were just perfect. That could be a stellar review in itself. My wife and I just came up on our three year anniversary. We make a point to go back to Metro Bis for dinner on our anniversary. Every year since has always been amazing. The food is creative and delicious, drinks are spot on and the staff are always top notch. This year they really deserve a mention because they went above and beyond to make us feel like it was our wedding all over again. The dining spot, the happy anniversary dessert , the warm and genuine staff .... It was really special. To the chef... the meal was spectacular. We had reserved a table for 10 but they gave us a table for 12 and we had to ask several times for them to take away the extra chairs and place servings. My dinner here, with a number of good friends, was an enjoyable experience. The atmosphere is "upscale homey," perhaps similar to dining at the home of a wealthy friend. The food is well prepared, and the service is impeccable. The prix fixe dinner for $60 includes 3 courses. Drinks (cocktails are also interesting and well prepared) and appetizers are separately priced. I believe there are 5 options per course. All the items for each course will all come out at the same time (of course). You are not rushed when dining here. I do feel that for the amount of food you receive, the price you pay is slightly above average, however when you take everything else into consideration, it is worth it. Metro Bis is one best restaurant experiences I have ever had. We had an excellent lunch, it's a prix fixe which may turn some off but the choices were great. We started with an addition of chicken egg rolls which were light and crisp, the sweet and sour sauce was not overwhelming. The Pad Thai was abundant and also light and full favor. Had a really great lunch here with my dad for his birthday. Lunch is a steal at $25 for three courses (pre tax and tip) per person. Compared to the dinner menu ($60 for four courses) it's a great way to try Metro Bis without breaking the bank. The place is absolutely gorgeous both indoors and out, although we opted to sit on the patio. Everything is lush, green, and feels like a garden party. They even brought over fresh cut flowers for the table. Drink menu is fairly expansive and wines are affordable for the quality. I had a glass of whispering angel for under $13 which isn't bad for a decent bottle. Between the two of us, we tried a number of items from the menu, although I believe the menu constantly changes (in fact, the one we had was slightly different from the version online) so I'm not sure how valuable these recommendations are. With that said, we both really enjoyed the calamari and beet salad appetizers and my dad's salmon for his main course was cooked perfectly. My neopolitan mousse dessert was delicious. They even brought out a candle for my dad's birthday which was a nice touch. Service was perfect throughout - our server was nice and attentive without any hovering or rushing us. Dishes showed up at a nice pace and empty plates were cleared quickly. Overall, it was a really great lunch and both my dad and I were impressed. Will be back! read more

I have no idea where all the other restaurants are getting their ingredients, but it can't be the same place as Metro Bis. We've eaten here many times and are always blown away but after last night I wanted to be sure to share my experience. Do you remember what shrimp tastes like? You might think you do, but last night after taking my first bite of shrimp with risotto and sweet pumpkin, I was really questioning what other restaurants have been calling "shrimp." These big, beautiful, not overly salty gems were the best shrimp I've ever had. Living in Avon, I hear a lot of buzz about restaurants in WeHa...and we've tried several. Once we manage to get a reservation at some ridiculous time, find parking and get seated in a jam-packed, super loud dining room where we can't hear each other, we're usually let down by the food and shocked by the bill. I've never had a problem getting a reservation at Metro Bis...two seconds online and we've got a table. Parking is easy and free and while the place can fill up, the setup allows room for each party and you don't hear your neighbors' conversations. Lactose intolerant like most of the adults in this country? Good luck getting a dairy free dessert at most restaurants. Metro Bis has dairy free options for every course - that would come out on top against any cream and cheese laden dish, in my opinion. I would make the trip to Metro Bis just for the Coconut & Chia Seed Semifreddo. If I had any criticism of Metro Bis, it isn't the food. I think service could be a little more friendly and thoughtful. It would be hard to find servers who care as much about making guests feel welcome as Chris does about every detail of his dishes, so we don't harp on that. Go to Metro Bis. The wait staff talked us into ordering chicken soup, even though I am not a "soup person", and was also very redundant, as I ended up ordering chicken for my main course, as the menu was extremely limited. When I decided to order dessert, the wait staff could not get it correct, even though there were only two of us in my party, and they were not busy! She started to give my lunch companions coffee to me, and vice versa, tried to give me his espresso! So I corrected her on that, but am now sitting here wondering why I had crème brûlée for dessert, when I requested tiramisu. Additionally, everyone at the table got a very small complimentary appetizer because I got the tasting menu as well My first critique is that it honestly did not look like the ingredients were high quality which made the dishes look less appetizing. I think this might have to do with the "farm to table" aspect however. First time here. I've been wanting to go based on everything I read. It didn't disappoint. The place is adorable, so expansive yet very cozy. We got there early and were able to sit in front of the fire and visit. We were seated in the dining room that has the bar which is a bar only the servers use. It felt very intimate and they did a great job spacing folks out so you weren't on top of each other. The service was excellent! As soon as we finished somebody was walking by to remove plates. I had a margarita after specialty drink menu, which was delicious! They also have a great wine list. I wish they had more wines by the glass. We had calamari as an appetizer it was unlike anything I have ever had. No round pieces all long thick ones that were delicious. It had an Asian flair with an Asian type sauce. Additionally, they give you hummus and pita bread, which was fresh out of the oven is so good. I had a flank steak over mashed potatoes I asked for rare it was a little more done that I would've liked. The flavor was excellent! My date had a shrimp and grits and I cautioned him not to get this in New England, however, I was wrong! The grits were real and so good! ABC Easy as 123 (The Jackson 5) We visited Metro Bis today in their third Simsbury Location. They started out in the north end of town in the Simsburytown Shops, and over the years have been making a steady and southerly migration down Hopmeadow Street. Next, they relocated as the house restaurant inside the Simsbury 1820 House Hotel, and now their newest home is in the stately Ensign House, on the corner of Hopmeadow Street and Drake Hill Road. And quite a gorgeous home it is. The building has housed an art gallery, offices, and even a bank (the ghost of the drive up windows is still there) over the years, but now Metro Bis occupies the entire first floor. We saw multiple gorgeous dining rooms (perfect for private parties and family celebrations). The décor is beautiful, and in a nod to the past, we saw the same lace curtains in the dining room we remembered from their second location. Our server Mickey, told us that in fact those curtains date back to their original location on the north end of town. There are a lot of interesting things all over the Metro Bis dining room. We saw that their bar was built on top of repainted sections from an old steam radiator, giving it a cool art deco look. The main dining room has a glass wall that looks into the kitchen, so you can see your food being prepared. We also saw some very interesting light fixtures in the form of big globes of thin wire intermingled with dozens of small light bulbs. After lunch we checked out the private rooms, and they were gorgeous, immaculately furnished, and seemed to smell of fresh paint. Really, the whole place is beautiful We started off with a complimentary appetizer, that we sure remembered from previous visits to the old Metro Bis. A nice basket of warm pita bread quarters and a ramekin of addictive creamy hummus. I ordered from the regular Lunch menu - a Roasted Vegetable Wrap with mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, mozzarella and an aioli (I swapped out the tomato aioli for a terrific sriracha) for $8.95. My wife went to the Special menu and selected a roast chicken Wrap ($10.95) with lettuce, tomato, and plenty of chicken. Both came with a pickle spear and a scoop of delicious spiced potato salad. I loved my sandwich! I'm not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination, but I was in the mood to try the vegetarian wrap today. It was stellar, and that Sriracha aioli added a nice kick to the sandwich. Bottom line, we loved our visit to Metro Bis in their new beautiful location. Five stars all the way! read more

I came here for dinner with my husband and another couple for the pre-fix dinner after hearing that they had a good tasting menu. We got a reservation for 6pm on a Wednesday and were able to find the place no problem. The vibe and feel of the place is very fun and different with books and interesting decor all around the dining room. The wait staff were also all kind and quick to chat with you. The menu was $60 and there were a decent amount of options for each course. There were also a few sharable items for an extra $10 you could get for the table. I got the acorn squash, hanger steak, and chocolate ganache for my meal and the table shared the truffle fries. The food was good, I wouldn't say anything blew me away, but all tasty. I will say that I found the portions to be very small for the price point. My appetizer of the acorn squash was particularly disappointing when I had 2 small slices of squash. My husband's short ribs had the smallest bit of meat. My hanger steak could also have used some more sides and I feel bread for the table should have been provided, rather than offering it for an extra $10. Overall it was a good meal, wait staff friendly, but a bit pricey for what you got. I'd keep that in mind if you chose to stop in. read more

This was my favorite go-to for YEARS, we've hosted showers and christenings here..after this visit I will not be going back. I came on a Tuesday afternoon with my Granny and two kids for our monthly lunch date. We were first greeted and snarked at for not having a reservation.....mind you the restaurant was empty..like COMPLETELY EMPTY when we walked in...... We finally sat down and looked over there limited menu which is VERY limited right now. I had asked for a high chair and the same lady who had complained we didn't have a reservation rolled her eyes and then brought me a broken high chair for my 2 year old toddler! The strap that hold your toddler was just hanging off with no way to fix it so here she is about to slide right down and potentially hurt herself! A couple had come in right after us and they were quickly seated, served drinks and had their food orders in so promptly that we just sat there getting ignored. My 90 year old Granny eventually said that we should probably go somewhere because clearly they are not going to treat us as they are others..unfortunately she believes it was because we had two children with us! They were extremely rude, not helpful at all and made us feel completely uncomfortable. In a time like this I hate giving bad reviews but this is more than deserving and I really hope they stop treating customers this way so that they don't lose out on more business read more

I stopped by here a couple of Thursday nights ago with a coworker for dinner. We had decided to come to Metro Bis because it was one of the top restaurants in the Connecticut Magazine. Whenever we arrived we proceeded to the hostess and were immediately sat at a 4 top. Before we had arrived I was concerned about not having a reservation but the restaurant was relatively empty, even for a Thursday in January. The area where we were sat consisted of 3 rows of tables with 4 tops along both walls and a row of 2 tops down the middle. There was a window into the kitchen on one side and windows outside to their outdoor seating. Then in the back there was a bar and the lighting was a pretty cool chandelier. While I was going to the bathroom I was also able to see a pretty nice looking and large party area. For dinner on this evening I decided to start off with the crispy marinated calamari for my appetizer and then went with the grilled Gorgonzola crusted flat iron steak for my entree. The menu described the calamari as coming with a carrot and daikon salad and a tamarind - miso dipping sauce while the steak was described as coming with garlic whipped potatoes, roasted vegetables, crispy onions and a rosemary Demi glacé. Since I can't have red wine I asked about the Demi glacé and after talking to the chef, they decided to put A1 on the side which was fine by me. In any case my calamari came out first and one thing is for sure, they know how to cook it! It might have been the most tender calamari appetizer I have ever had as none of it was rubbery at all! This was probably helped by the fact that it was parts of calamari steaks instead of the usual tubes and tentacles. The breading on it was flavorful too and while not as crispy as I would have expected from a menu item calling it crispy, I still enjoyed it. Finally the tamarind miso sauce gave a nice bit of acidity to the calamari and I enjoyed dipping the calamari into it. My coworker had also ordered the cauliflower waffle and shared a couple of pieces with me. I have to say that I really enjoyed it although I wouldn't have been able to tell you that it was cauliflower. The batter was light and really airy for a waffle and then there was a nice and subtle taste of spices which I appreciated. Once we were done with our appetizers, my steak came out. It was presented sitting on top of the vegetables and mashed potatoes with the crispy onions off to the side. Since I didn't really move the steak off the vegetables and potatoes I couldn't tell you what vegetables were there although I definitely got a hit of cinnamon at one point. Then the potatoes where nice and light and creamy although I didn't get much garlic from. As for the steak, it was really good. They cooked it perfectly to the medium temperature that I asked for and it was seasoned nicely on the outside. That means that I didn't miss the rosemary Demi glacé at all and I was very happy with it and didn't need the A1 either. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. All 3 items that I tasted were cooked perfectly, seasoned properly and tasted great. I can really see why Metro Bis is on the list of top CT restaurants! read more

It's been on the menu so long you might overlook it too. Don't. This was our first visit to the new place and it just might be the best. Beautiful in every respect. The price fixe menu is relatively reasonable given the quality of the food and really lovely ambiance. The hospitality was impeccable. My friend and I ordered dishes that had delicious gravies/sauces. We wanted some bread to dip into it to further enjoy the flavors. We were told we needed to order a breadbasket for $10.00. For a top-shelf restaurant we thought this was a bit tacky. I still look forward to returning. Just something for the managements to consider, A a few slices or pieces of bread for dunking pleasure would suffice. It doesn't need to be the whole basket. read more

First of all, the restaurant is located in a cool old and enormous house. The decor was very nice when you walk in. We didn't realize there were apartments and a B2B in the same building. Our group was promptly seated, allowed us time to look over the pre fixe and cocktail menu. Martini menu looked interesting but nothing caught my attention so I went with wine. There were a few selections for appetizers, entrees and desserts. I tried the crispy tortellini dish for app, my husband had the crab cake. His dish was tastier and more substantial. Both were ok but nothing special. Entrees - my husband ordered the braised short rib since I read other Yelp reviewers that like it. He enjoyed it and thought everything tasted great. I ordered the poached shrimp- only got 2 shrimp over a whipped potato with crab meat, cheese melted over it. While I thought it was tasty, the portion was small and it didn't feel like a main dish, no veggies. It also came with 4 slices of toasted baguette which most people probably would eat since they are still hungry. Dessert- I ordered sorbet and got a scoop of 2 flavors, lime and raspberry? We were visiting a friend and decided to meet here for lunch since we were staying at the bed and breakfast it was located in. Their pita bread and hummus was amazing..probably the best I've had. For lunch, we ordered a chicken caesar salad, side of truffle fries for sharing, salmon, and a vegetable wrap, which got swapped for a salad. I loved the chicken caesar salad and the truffle fries..I would highly recommend getting the truffle fries. The person who had the salmon said that the salmon was cooked perfectly and was delicious. As for the dishes that were swapped, I think that this person didn't like either one, for different reasons. We then ordered the caramel apple tart, which was delicious! Then my mom and I came back for dinner. We were contemplating eating in the room or going to the restaurant to eat, and ultimately, my mom won this round. I ended up ordering a burger, which they usually don't serve for dinner, but the chef made an exception for me, which I greatly appreciated. And my mom got some appetizers for her dinner--foie gras and calamari. She didn't really care for either, so I let her finish my burger..I couldn't finish it anyway, but it was the most delicious burger I've had in a while. I really appreciate our server and the chef for making an exception. Overall, our experience here was great! I would highly recommend this place and would return if I'm ever back in town. read more
