Let me start with the good for my Metro Diner pick up order (placed one online and one through DoorDash): Order was ready on time The hostess in the bright green shirt at the front was very friendly and assisted me quickly Chicken tenders, creole mustard, green beans and fries were the star of the show today. I haven't had their chicken tenders before, but now realize I prefer it over the standard fried chicken solely because the flavor profile is better (more seasoned). I would order this again. Salad for my steak tips was as expected. I also redeemed a birthday reward for the chocolate cake. The bite I took was pretty good and it is easily a sharable portion size. Now for the not so good... My order through metro diners website consisted of steak tips, mash&gravy, garden salad with ranch. I personally would not order this again. Issue: The steak was chewy, flavor was bland and portion size seemed small for the value. My DoorDash order consisted of 1. Bissell breakfast with pancakes, scrambled eggs, cheese grits, bacon and a biscuit. 2. Small sausage gravy side 3. Chicken tenders plate with creole mustard, green beans and French fries. Issue: I quickly glanced through the see through lid of the boxes and noticed toast instead of a biscuit and no container that would have had the cheese grits. Went inside to notify the team and expo of missing items (also brought the bag back in). The expo called for these missing items from the kitchen. The cook glanced and then asked if he had a ticket for that? I managed restaurants for years so I get it when the kitchen asks this, however, the ticket was the one you made incorrectly and the expo did not check for correctness. The expo also stated "it is for a DoorDash order that she said is wrong". I'm happy this was a personal order because I got to see firsthand how it appears DD order issues are dismissed since they seemed to assume I was a driver. At least that is how the short exchange presented. They weren't rude it was the tone and lack of apology for my missing items. Mistakes happen. How you respond to and handle them matters. Fast forward - I get home and realize they must have simply switched my order with someone else's. There were hash browns with cheese and diced tomatoes and scrambled eggs with cheese. Was not my order and could not eat this order. The pancakes were just okay. Tried the sausage gravy with the biscuit. Not something I would get again but this part isn't a reflection of Metro Diner. Ordered this just to try it since many rave about this southern combo. Let's just say there will be more for everyone else to enjoy. read more

I was surprised on how long they allowed the tables to remain dirty and un bussed considering that there were plenty of employees just standing around at the time and the restaurant wasn't full by any means. My friend and I decided to meet up here on a Sunday afternoon. There was a small wait when we arrived but we got seated pretty quickly. Our server provided great service!!! She came on over to take our drink orders. She explained the different mimosa flavor they offered and which ones she recommended. Well.... We got the peach mango mimosa and it was tooo sweet and had an off after taste. I didn't love it. Sips water instead! lol We both ordered chicken and waffle as our entrees. I also added a side of hash browns and my friend added a side of scrambled eggs with cheese. Excellent choices - we gobbled them up! Our food was hot, fresh and delicious!!! Oh my goodness, where do I start? From the moment I walked in I felt welcomed. The waiter was extremely nice and I was seated immediately. I placed my order and nothing took long to get to me. This is definitely the place to get your eat on. The portion size for the chicken and waffles is insane. A half a chicken and a whole Belgian waffle for $17!!!!! And the chicken is fried to perfection. One of us got chicken tenders instead of the half chicken. The seasoning on both was on point. Our server, Elle, was super nice and attentive. I was extremely excited that there was a Metro Diner in Birmingham. I've visited a few in Florida, but did not they were in Alabama. This place had several great options. I usually get the shrimp and grits, but this time I tried the chicken and waffles. Their mimosas are really delicious. I chose the strawberry lemonade flavor. It gave me lemon drop vibes. Back to the food! Half a chicken came with the order. So I got a leg, thigh, breastfeeding, and a wing. And a fluffy waffle. My aunt ordered the breakfast burger and it looked yummy. Feeling a bit nostalgic, I decided to take a 30-minute drive, only to be met with a bit of a letdown. I was hoping to find a diner, you know, a "greasy spoon" that had that old-school charm. It looked like a classic local diner, but something just didn't feel right. Having visited diners all over the country, this one just didn't quite hit the spot. Being the third person out of three adults and two kids, you'd think the place was packed, but the service was slow. I stood at the hostess stand, and a waiter kept telling her someone was waiting, while my waitress couldn't remember my drink order. American diners are a treat for travelers, especially those who are up late or heading to work early, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner no matter the time. Metro Diner seemed to fit the bill. I ordered the 2-egg breakfast plate at 3 p.m. My complete order was 2 eggs over medium, toast, hash browns, and bacon. It's my usual order at another diner closer to home. I'll say my local diner sometimes struggles with the over-medium eggs, undercooking them but they're never served them to me as scrambled. After waiting a while, it was nice to see the bacon and hash browns cooked perfectly, but served cold. Another oddity here was that every diners needed to ask for utensils. I wouldn't say my local Waffle House is the perfect example of a greasy spoon, but it's definitely the bare minimum of a diner one should aim for. Diners should be friendly and welcoming, no matter where you are or what time of day it is, with food served hot and fast. Having to drive past Waffle House, IHOP, and a bunch of other places, I'd say don't miss out on a good meal - pull into one of them instead! read more

This is an amazing restaurant hidden in a strip mall. First let me address the amazing sweet southern girls that are working as servers. Polite, sweet, helpful and carrying about the experience. Now on to the food which everyone wants to know about. For the appetizer we shared a plate of Poutine this is a twist on the classic style and it does work very well with a great gravy with perfectly seasoned fries and the twist deep fried cheese curds... I know it is different but it works. The Main Course we shared a 3 piece fried Chicken dinner with green beans and red mashed potatoes. The Chicken was seasoned perfectly and juicy so very juicy... the mashed red taters with brown gravy something you find only in the south. Green beans were steamed the supervisor loved them. Team member got a breakfast plate here comments this is very good. Last but not least the burger bowl he said this is the best bowl ever. Needless to say the bowl was gone in a matter of minutes. The portions are giant and the food is ok. Not the highest quality, but it's decent. Chicken salad is store bought. Avocado isn't fresh. Fried chicken is good, but nothing special. Meatloaf is maybe store bought, but surprisingly tasted good. Not great mind you, but not bad either. If you want to eat healthy, there aren't many options. Recently, we went and the women's bathroom was out of soap. I'd seen people going in and out, so hopefully it had only just run out. The wait staff is very nice. I just want to say my service person, Elle was the sweetest and most courteous server I've had in a long time so the service isn't about her, it's about the establishment. My food took forever to get to me, especially when the rest of my party got theirs in a timely manner. Even my late party guest got her food before me. I literally waited 20 minutes for a side steak that was bland, over cooked, and just a waste of money. Even the manager came out and apologized to me about the wait time for my food but I still paid full price for something messed up and you know why? Apparently Metro has new staff and is under new management? After YEARS of positive experiences here, we had a terrible experience today. We had a larger group (8) and were told it would be 15 mins for a table, which is to be expected. We go to Metro often with a group this size and expected to wait. However, after 20 mins we kept watching them seat groups of 4 right next to where people were finishing their meals, and it was apparent they were never going to have 2 tables to push together if they kept seating the center tables. We discussed it among our party and then I went up to the hostess to ask for clarification and enquire as to whether there was a specific table they were waiting to vacate in order to seat us. She explained the situation, which didn't make any sense to me as someone who waited tables for a decade, but she said she was doing what her manager told her to do, so fine. After a few more minutes, our table was ready and we were seated. We thanked the hostess and after a minute, a man in a kitchen uniform (we assumed the manager) came to the table and, instead of greeting us, asked in a threatening tone if "there was a problem." We said no, that we had just been seated. At that point, he asked the hostess what the issue was, and she responded that we had been complaining about the wait. I told the manager that we had asked about the process and that the hostess explained it, and we were fine. At that point, we heard the kitchen talking loudly and carrying on about how my sister had 'cursed out' the teenaged hostess, which absolutely DID NOT happen. At that point, no one had been to greet us, so we decided to leave. As we were leaving, the hostess and another member of the staff who we hadn't even interacted with at all, but who seemed to be the source of the manufactured drama, yelled after us that they were glad we were leaving because they didn't want to serve us anyway. I don't hold out much hope for a restaurant with a manager that doesn't understand customer service or how to run a hostess map, but they had a good run. I ordered the river city (or just river I can't remember) hash (special of the day that was not so special). The quality just wasn't there. The over medium eggs came in over hard. The hollandaise sauce was too thick and overwhelmed the entire dish. Potatoes could have been much crispier. Not much ham or bellpepper on the plate - only tiny diced up bits and pieces. One friend ordered the same dish and hardly ate any of it. Another friend ordered the burger, and it was pretty mediocre. Yet another friend ordered the fish and chips - which was actually decent we were told. Last of all, the service was not good. I get that covid has been rough on the workforce, but our server really didn't seem like he wanted to be there. It would have been ok if the food was good. We have been to Metro diner before, and always had a good experience. However, this time wasn't so great. My husband's meal smelled like cleaner was mixed into it. He thought the smell was coming from a waitress cleaning the table across the way, so he started eating. After a few bites, he gave me his food and asked me to smell it. It definitely had cleaner mixed into it. We're sure it was an accident and not intentionally. However, when we spoke to the manager it was very defensive and didn't want to even entertain the idea. My husband and I were at a halfway point of a long road trip and decided to stop somewhere in Birmingham for a bite and a stretch. Metro Diner had great reviews and a terrific menu. Btw, if you haven't read the full descriptions of menu items on here, do yourself a favor- they're beautifully written and extremely descriptive. Our mouths were watering and the choice was made! We weren't disappointed - this is a cute, clean, contemporary diner with booths and fassst service. Jennifer served us right away and she was a terrific. Attentive, took our special requests for crispy bacon, etc and made them all happen. We started off with very generous mimosas, which came immediately it seemed. Our food order came unbelievably fast as well, perfect for a quick stop on the road. Everything was as advertised, cooked as we wanted and in heaping portions. My husband had the fruit waffle (fantastic and melted in your mouth), and I had the Bissell breakfast platter. Highly recommend each! We used to go to the Vestavia restaurant before it closed. Glad two locations are still open, but I'm sad there is no longer one close to my house. We will visit the 280 location when we are in the area, but to get there it is quite a drive hrough heavy traffic. We went one night for dinner the parking lot was crowded but there were still spaces available. When we entered the restaurant the host was pleasant with a smile and there was no wait which was great. I ordered the Fruity Waffle, they serve breakfast for dinner, which is a belgium waffle covered with powdered sugar, blueberries, strawberries and bananas. It is one of my favorites. My wife and adult son went to the Metro Diner this Sunday morning. We are usually on Keto, so this is a treat for all of us. My adult son had a gluten issue, so we have to be careful of him. I literally had to negotiate with my family to drive from Downtown Birmingham, AL to Inverness. For some reason, a 20-minute drive is no issue to me to get a breakfast I like. "What are you going to do?" I had two eggs over easy (had to send them back because they were not done enough. That is why it is a 4-star rating), home fries, patty sausage, whole wheat toast and two pancakes. All for under $12.00. My son got the meat lovers play and my wife had what I had just with cheesy grits. Not that instant kind, the real stuff. The coffee is kind of weak but ok. The mimosas are a bargain at $2.99. Our server was new and a little nervous however did a great job. I went online to put myself on the wait list and when we got there, we sat right away. Another place in Birmingham had a 2 hour wait. I've been to the location in Atlanta, but I prefer this one over that location for sure. I ordered this steak bowl that had hash browns, and eggs with some hollandaise on the side. The steak was slightly overcooked, but had good flavor and the hash was perfectly crispy even though it was under the scrambled eggs and had this almost a jous like sauce covering it.
