We love brunch here! This weekend was Mardi Gras themed... Beads, Booze and Brunch. Our waiter was wonderful, just sorry I didn't catch his name. He was a great conversationalist, quick, and checked on us regularly to make sure everything was going well. It was clean and not overly loud, perfect for Sunday morning brunch. We had the BYO omelette with grits and the Bayou Shrimp Bennie. Both were delicious, but that Bennie was unbelievable. I definitely recommend it. We've been to Ruby Sunshine several times for Sunday breakfast. The food is consistently great, and the staff is even better. We previously had an amazing waitress, Olivia, who unfortunately left for another job. Since then, we've been taken care of by Walker, who is also excellent very attentive and always brings our food out quickly, hot, and exactly as ordered. There is a bartender who, unfortunately, is our least favorite. She tends to be very loud and often screams for no apparent reason, which can be distracting. Other than that, the food is delicious and the portions are generous. Overall, we still really enjoy coming here. The ambience is family oriented and even the place is not fancy the food and the staff makes our experience always amazing. read more

The wait staff was very customer friendly. I was impressed with our servers ability to remember orders without writing it down. The servers seem to mentally multi-task but compartmentalize each task action. So don't get in a hurry. It was interesting to watch. The restaurant was clean. The table cleaning could use a little improvement. Seemed like it didn't really clean just spread the mess around. Some tables needed a little more muscle but the method used seemed to be "one size fits all". As for the food. Mom and I each started with a Vanilla Chai Latte which were tasty and huge. Skip If you're calorie counting. Mom had the Berry Chantilly Stuffed French Toast--omg it was good. Of course I had to try it. The stuffing was rich and creamy. I opted for the Eggs Cochon. Some of my bites tasted like old grease. I tried to taste each ingredient separately and figured out it was the biscuit. It was the bottom and edges of the biscuit. Which tells me that the sheet pan they used has built up grease that wasn't properly cleaned. The inside of biscuit had that homemade fluffy biscuit taste. I just had to avoid eating the bottom and sides. The hollandaise sauce was orange in color and I couldn't figure out why. Nothing stood out when I tasted it. The apple braised pork was so tender. Both Hostesses were very rude and not friendly at all. Ladies said 30 minute wait for a party 12 ( we said they could separate us to make it easy on them) -still said we had to wait even though there was over 8+ tables empty. They sat everyone else that walked in after us. After 50 Minutes we were finally sent a text message. When we got up to the counter they ignored us and wouldn't even look up at us. My first time at this location of Ruby Sunshine. I'm so glad to see this resturant chain growing and adding locations. I've seen them in Nashville as well as Birmingham. They are bringing New Orleans Brunch culture to the folks!! The service at this location could not have been more welcoming and down home friendly. The Eggs Benedict were cooked to perfection, perched on a freshly baked flakey biscuit with gourmet bacon, fresh tomato and topped with a delightful hollandaise sauce. Pros: None Cons: For the price of their food, which is Not cheap, everything was bland and mediocre. Eggs not cooked right (how can you mess up eggs sunny side up?) The entire brunch tasted like it was taken from a cardboard box and microwaved. While the food was not inedible, I can say it it was just barely edible. The coffee was really bad and on par with gas station coffee. The server also spent the majority of their time chitchatting with my partner and ignoring me the entire time - not the kind of thing you want to do to the person who's paying your tip. Needless to say, they got properly compensated for their time. They also never once came to refill our coffee (and when we went, the place was half empty, so whatever they were doing, it wasn't attending to the tables or customers). Of all the brunch restaurants we've been to in Birmingham, this was by far the worst and most disappointing of them all. read more

Every Sunday after church, my wife and I enjoy trying different breakfast spots. Unfortunately, this past Sunday, we ran into what has to be the worst one in town. The omelets tasted like they were made with powdered eggs, and the flavor was downright unpleasant. My potatoes were hard as a rock, and the biscuits, though the size of our hands, were just as disappointing in taste. When we asked for butter for our biscuits, we were given a tiny metal cup with barely a pinch of it. Overall, it was a nightmare of a breakfast experience. After Valentine's Day, we decided a lovely breakfast/brunch would be fun. We decided to get Ruby Sunshine to-go, so we could watch a show and dine. It was great! We chose this restaurant because it offered unique, interesting combinations compared to many other breakfast/brunch establishments. I ordered the skinny migas. They were awesome, and everything tasted fresh and was still warm when it arrived home. The only reason I ordered the skinny migas was that the other omelet options weren't customizable with egg whites. I am sensitive to egg yolks (but can eat hard-boiled eggs, hard fried, and anything baked), so I cannot eat a regular omelet. I found that odd, given that for other dishes you could choose egg whites as a side. I was disappointed, but I still enjoyed it. I also ordered the French toast bites, and they were tasty. I wished I had drizzled the frosting on the side, since they were already covered in it. I am sure they are a hit, but I prefer to dip. Then I had their biscuit, too. It was fluffy, and I only tried a bite because I was full after half the other dishes. All in all, everything was fresh and great, and the presentation was spot on. They presented it as photos; they did not just put it into go containers. That speaks volumes, and I appreciate the extra effort you put into treating to-go items with care, wanting those patrons to have a close to in-dining experience. The reason for the 4? Because I couldn't choose egg whites for all the omelets. Then there was no syrup with the pancakes my friend ordered, none with the French toast bites, and they forgot all the condiments we ordered (strawberry preserves, etc.). Definitely recommend. The French toast bite with chicken - the chef one was good but the French toast wasn't fresh so it was hard to chew. The food also came out lukewarm/cold. I had a hair or lint on my strawberries but the server had already forgot our appetizer that I didn't bother making a fuss. Also tried the Trifecta. The shrimp was too salty and over cooked. The eggs were good and the only item that wasn't cold. The chicken was re-heated and the biscuits I'd assume they make at a 6 each morning and serve them as customer order. Our table of 3 were all served food that was cold or had clearly been sitting out for awhile. My avocado toast was served with completely brown avocados and was inedible. The manager was working incredibly hard covering all tables and making all drinks. The rest of her staff were standing around complaining or eating their own breakfasts and not serving customers. We ordered a few appetizers including the praline bacon, French toast bites and fried green tomatoes. They were all delicious. My family enjoyed the mimosa flight as well. For my entree, I ordered the shrimp and grits which was described as New Orleans bbq shrimp style. Quite honestly it was not and I wouldn't order it again. My favorite shrimp and grits dish is from Surrey's in New Orleans and they definitely didn't compare. My family seemed to enjoy their dishes though. The customer service was outstanding! Another table seated, waitress went right to them. Then another. Waited a while longer then finally just got up and left. Drove around the back to see 3 or 4 employees on smoke break behind the restaurant. Smoking, while customers just sit and wait. Good luck. Worn concrete floors, drone looking retro light fixtures and very hard metal chairs or wooden booths....ouch! The food was pretty good in my opinion but hubby thought very average. Specifics: The Migas could have used more Pico de Gallo or Salsa addition for flavor and the avocado was pretty but hard from being cut open too soon and really need a lemon juice splash and salt. My pancakes were a slightly odd cake like flavor and needed more berries and whipped cream. Servings were a good size but we both have liked IHOP much better for a lot less money. Cocktails looked delish and creative but did not try: $10 average price. The place was packed, especially with young people, with a 20-30 min wait for two people at 1:30 pm on a Sunday afternoon. This was the best breakfast I've had in a long time. My daughter loved the French toast bites from the kids menu. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.. absolutely dreamy! The bacon was excellent, and the fried green tomato was a great touch. I appreciated getting lemon and honey with my tea, because that doesn't happen often. Our server was sweet and attentive. A new location on 280! I have always been a fan of Ruby Sunshine ever since they opened their first location in Homewood. A short drive down highway 280 from downtown Birmingham, this spot never misses! If you are looking for a vibrant brunch spot this is the space. Drinks are phenomenal for those enjoying a boozy brunch. My favorite here is their blueberry margarita. For a person that isn't the biggest fan of tequila, this drink was perfectly blended (fair warning: can most def sneak up on you if you aren't careful). Other favorites are the Hello sunshine (if you are a fan of lavender) and the classic ruby mimosa. Now as for food if you are a fan of any type of Cajun/Creole style this is your place. I enjoyed the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. The seasonal beignets are also great if you enjoy something more savory. The blueberry and the lemon curd were perfectly blended for a sweet/tart flavor. Of their speciality items, I really liked the Sweet Heat Chicken and French Toast Bites.
