We had no complaints on the food at all other than my grits was a little lumpy. But still a great flavor. Everytime our waiter came back she seemed to be irritated or frustrated, but you shouldn't take that out on the customers specifically ones who have been nothing but kind. After we finished eating she brung a payment book with one receipt and said "is it ok that it's all on one receipt?" But it was more like she was telling us and didn't ask before hand and didn't even let us answer. She sat the receipt down and just walked out as we were answering. We planned to have 3 different checks because we were going separate ways. I called the manager over and he fixed it immediately and apologized for that. Some people just don't need to work in customer service. I get people have bad days but that was a bad experience for our first time there. Everyone else was super sweet except her. Atleast our food was good. Her customer service is definitely a 4/10. Even the table behind us was upset and requested a refund on the food. I would definitely go back just wouldn't want her as a server!

When I first moved to Jacksonville, I did the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives tour with my friends who'd lived here forever. At the time, this was one of my favorite places to eat (I even have an old review for the place, but it was for the wrong location since I didn't know there were more than one). Over the course of the last year, though, it's slowly started to drop off both in service and in food quality. For example, about a month after we heard they extended their hours, my wife and I went to try their dinnerish food. I can't remember everything we ordered (since it's been a while), but I can tell you that the meatloaf sliders came out cold on the inside, and the bread was noticeably stale. I could swear I also had some pasta/chicken dish with lemon and capers, but I can't see it on the menu now so it must have been a special of some sort. Anyways, it was exceptionally salty. The service was also slow (despite it being at roughly 25% occupancy); we waited maybe 10 minutes for drinks, and what seemed like an eternity for our check. I chalked all this up to the staff getting their footing on a new dinner menu and the adjusting to flow of that time of the day. Then I had another weirdly bad service issue. This one was less the business' fault at first, but I still didn't like the way they handled it. Basically, for those that haven't gone here, the outside is handled as a secondary option--meaning, the host will ask you if you're okay with seating outside. I always say yes, as the location is almost entirely shaded when hot, and they have heat lamps for when it's cold. Anyway, my wife and I are standing outside waiting for a table to open up when we see two tables free up at once. I watch as the staff comes over and cleans one table immediately, expecting (as they have every other time in the past) the host to call our name for the table at any moment. Before that happens, I see two different families sit at the tables--both the freshly cleaned one, and the still dirty one. I go in to tell the staff that both sets of seats were taken by people who just walked up off the street, and at that point I was notified that the outside seats are "first come first serve." I probably don't need to explain to any of my readers how that's a terrible method for seating people--especially when the host asks if you're okay with outside seating... A more recent example was when I had family in town (maybe a month and a half ago), and we waited for nearly an hour and a half as we were told "just 15 more minutes" when we'd ask how long the wait would be. For a while we saw smaller parties come in after us and take up 2+ tables that would have been perfect to merge for a party of our size (7 people). Right around the time we noticed a pretty large group leaving who came in AFTER us, we saw a 2 tables we'd been eyeing outside get split up for two separate families that showed up an hour AFTER us. Until that point I was patient, as I knew having anything more that 4 people made it hard to seat quickly at Metro, but that was just ridiculous so I had to go ask what the deal was. When I asked why the staff made such a decision, the girl gave me the "I'm only smiling because you're the customer" look and said that I didn't ask for outside seating (which I definitely DID, because it felt amazing outside and I knew it would also decrease our wait time), but that she could have a table ready for us "in 15 minutes." Dejected, I turned to my family and explained that there was a misunderstanding, and that I was sorry but this has never happened before. Angry, my wife decided she was done waiting and started to walk off, which prompted the host to ask us why we were leaving (I honestly don't know how she asked that with a straight face). Before anyone in my party had a chance to get ornery with her, I walked up and explained that while we'd expected a longer than usual wait, we were disappointed with how many opportunities were lost to get us seating. She then asked me if there was anything she could do to change our minds. I simply told her we'd like to sit down and eat RIGHT NOW--knowing full well there were two adjacent tables inside because I saw them when I walked in to ask why they gave the outside tables to two families. Her response? "It'll be 15 minutes." I don't know what we did to that girl, but it was clear she enjoyed handing out whatever punishment she thought we deserved. I've given this place a lot of passes on their food and (especially) their service, but at this point I'm starting to think it's part of their work culture. I just don't think they're the awesome place they used to be. read more

It's the kind of place where you see families catching up, friends enjoying brunch, and regulars who clearly know they're in for a good meal. Now let's talk about the food. The crispy fried chicken was perfectly seasoned and fried to a beautiful golden crunch. The outside had that satisfying crisp, while the inside stayed juicy and flavorful. Paired with the waffle, it was the ultimate sweet-and-savory combo. The waffle itself was fluffy with just the right texture, but the real highlight was the strawberry butter. It melted right into the waffle and added a smooth, slightly sweet flavor that made every bite even better. Service was another standout. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made the experience feel welcoming from start to finish. Even with the diner being busy, the team kept things moving and made sure everyone felt taken care of. Parking also wasn't bad, which can sometimes be a challenge at popular breakfast spots, so that was definitely a plus. The only small downside was that it can get a bit noisy during peak hours, but honestly, that just shows how popular this place is. Overall, Metro Diner continues to live up to the hype. It didn't really strike me as the kind of restaurant that locals go to, especially since the people in front and in back of us in line were also out-of-towners. Oh yeah, there was a line that went along the outside of the building, and a 45-minute wait to go with it. Nevertheless, the food and service were fantastic. Our waitress was really friendly and helpful. Absolutely nothing negative to say about her or any of the other staff members. Even those who weren't directly attending our table smiled and greeted us. True Southern hospitality. The restaurant does look a little worn out, both inside and out. I think it would benefit from being remodeled, but maybe some people would disagree with updating a classic? Okay, the food. I hate to be so predictable, but the three of us ordered the chicken wings and a big waffle. I have no regrets. The chicken was perfectly fried and crispy, and the waffle had a great homestyle taste to it. I also ordered a side of candied yams, which was perfect. Additionally, we started our meal with cornbread. The cornbread was amazing. Soft and sweet, just the way I like it. Wow! The Apple really falls far from the tree with this Metro Diner. This one is by far the worse in town. The only thing it has similar to the original on Hendricks Ave, is the name and menu. But the manager at the Roosevelt location is a very rude and brash person that obviously brings his personal problems to his job, because there is no other explanation for how he treated our family today, on father's Day! He actually called my Dad a Jerk, and told him not to come back to eat there again. And all of this because the bread from the sandwich my Dad ordered was moldy and the manager did not want to take it back! My Dad and Mom ended up not eating anything at all on Father's Day lunch, because this manager was so offensive. This is unheard of, the worst customer service I have ever seen! This manager is a lousy leader and treats his employees just as bad as he treats the Metro customers. He is very negative and this Metro diner will continue to suffer while he is working there. We have 5 separate families in the Jax area and none will ever again eat at any Metro diner and we will tell as many of friends and family to stop going as well. read more

My family and I visited Jacksonville and we asked the valet at the hotel where to go to get a good breakfast. They all suggested Metro Diner on Hendricks Ave. This was our first time; Anastasia was our waitress, she was awesome. Being our first time, she made great suggestions for our party. She checked on us often. She was so wonderful and the food was great so we returned the next day. My aunt was hugged Anastasia and was happy to see her. Unfortunately, we did not get to sit in her area. However, Thomas was our waiter, and needless to say, he was awesome too. He was attentive, patient, and friendly. The food was delicious, and Anastasia and Thomas provided outstanding service. Thankfully, there are Metro Diner locations close to my home. The Metro Diner is one of the few places in Jacksonville that actually attempts and succeeds at making breakfast more than just bland basic food slapped on a plate. Great experience, the food was delicious! Huge portions for not a lot of money. Down home diner style, vast menu, great service!! As soon as we sat down, order taken quickly, and served quickly. This place is only open from 7:00am(I believe) to 2:30pm serving both breakfast and lunch. My friend and I tried most of what was seen on the show, and we were not disappointed! She had the meatloaf and let me tell you it is out of this world delicious. The meatloaf is very popular, I find it good but not great, but that may be a general aversion to meat loaf talking. As mentioned, it is very popular. Feature items to try: peanut butter jelly burger (includes cheddar and jalapeños too of course) and the crab Benedict. I had breakfast at the San Marco location of Metro Diner with a large group this past Saturday, and it was fantastic. The food and the service were both excellent. We had heard of the restaurant through Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but you never know if a place is going to live up to the hype. Metro Diner definitely delivered. Every employee we encountered -- from the hostess stand to our server to the guys who bussed our table - were professional, courteous, thoughtful, and attentive. The variety of menu options was great for our large group, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed what they ordered. We'll definitely come back when we're in the area!! It was a nice experience dining there. The restaurant was pleasant and cozy inside. A great spot for casual dining. Their dishes are good comfort and it's really great. A great place, it is the first time I have seen this Diner and the service was excellent, some excellent Mimosas even though unfortunately after the first mimosa they informed us that they no longer had any more champagne it was unfortunate that they are informing such situation. The avocado toast dish, in my opinion, would improve if the tomato was cut into small squares, being in a single large slice makes it feel like the tomato is the main ingredient. One of the most amazing places I've been so far for breakfast or brunch. Whenever I have my breakfast there it was always really wonderful. It's been so long since the last visit because of the pandemic but I tell you, this need to try because of the satisfying food they have. Very delectable and always make me so full. OMG.... chicken & waffles are to die for! I order it with strips instead of the half chicken with bones. They brine their chicken, so the flavor is all the way through, not just in the crust. My husband likes that New Orleans shrimp & grits, and he loves it. The only complaint would be the long wait. But how can you penalize a restaurant for being so good that there's a line? Metro Diner is my favorite breakfast spot in Jacksonville. Doesn't matter what I've ordered: three-egg omelettes, the "12 inch challenge" metro pancake, waffles, french toast, all are made-to-order and cooked perfectly. If you're in a healthy mood just swap out the whole eggs for egg whites or order a fresh fruit cup which is always fresh. Prices are very reasonable and the staff provides superior service. read more

I saw this Diner on T.V and couldn't wait for my next visit with my daughter in Jacksonville, to put it to the test. OMG the food was magnificent especially the chicken and waffles and the Yo Hala. The diner was fairly small, and there was about an 40 min, wait outside because the diner is so small, there is no waiting room indoors. The waitress was pleasant and food came out quickly. The Fox is a Jax staple and is everything you could ask for from an old-school diner. It's nostalgic in all the right ways. The food is just as I remember it and consistently delicious. Highly recommend for a fun place to grab a solid casual meal.

On a whim, we tried Ellen's and sat outside one day. It was soooo pleasant. The weather was nice! A few other patrons brought their dogs, which my grandaughter LOVED! Now, we are regulars. The staff is always great with both my grandaughter and my mother! Both can be fussy at times ! To avoid this, the baby's food is usually brought out first! This is greatly appreciated as she isn't quite old enough to occupy with crayons yet. Our food has always been prepared exactly as ordered and arrived in generous portions. To date, I don't think I've even received an incorrect beverage order! I can't sing enough praises for Ellen's! It's great to have local businesses to support. Can't wait 'till our next visit!

They grind their own burgers which are juicy and flavorful. The onions are perfectly sauteed and the toast was flattop grilled to perfection. Service is always friendly and efficient. This seating plans allows for smaller parties to be tended to quickly and redirects the noise and collaboration needed to tend to a larger table top away from others' dining experience. I am delightfully pleased to say that they need to bring back this classic American dining practice of partitioning of space for a larger tables. She could get her egg done however she wanted so she picked fried hard. She could pick cheese as well so she picked American. She liked how buttery the croissant was and said it held up fairly well to the main ingredients. She really liked the breakfast potatoes for her side and said she'd order them every time. This is a cute little place and it's been too long since we stopped in. Emilie was a great server and she happened to be the same person who waited on us the last time we were here, well over a year ago!

I listened to her with a table behind us and she treated them with the same high level of customer center care that she gave to us. Perfect today the pancakes, however, a little more overdone than I would prefer, but they cannot always be done perfectly every time. Overall, this was a great visit and this location is far better than the one on University Boulevard. I don't like eggs so that eliminates half the menu at breakfast places so I usually have pancakes or waffles. I had the blueberry pancakes and they were as good as I've had anywhere in a long time. They're huge and take up the entire plate and they don't skimp on the blueberries either. I was hungry and still not quite able to finish them all....but if you do their pancakes are automatically all you can eat so you can order more for no extra charge. The bacon is also a must try, it's four large strips of perfectly cooked bacon, not too crisp and not too soggy and they're lean cuts so not too fatty. Gotta have coffee of course and the coffee is solid as well, with quick refills. They also have cocktails etc. but I stuck with coffee this trip. Service is very fast and friendly here, they weren't too busy on a weekday but I can see where they'd get packed on a weekend.
