I'm staying around the corner for a month. This morning my car wouldn't start. Thought maybe I'd left a light on and the battery died, but didn't know anyone in the neighborhood who could help me jump it. Walked to Metro Motor and the gentleman there was nice enough to loan me the battery charger/jumper thingy. I went back to my car and realized the problem was that the battery was simply loose. I tightened it by hand and got the car started. While returning the charger, the same guy told me I should bring it in for them to tighten it with a wrench to make sure it didn't jar loose again. I cant praise the guys at Metro Motors Shell enough . We arrived in DC Saturday night . The check engine light came on and my car was sputtering and coughing with no power. I called MM first thing Monday morning and explained our situation . We were scheduled to leave the next morning. We took the vehicle and dropped it off . A couple of hours later I recieved a message stating exactly what the prpblem was, and the repair costs . The ignition control model had failed . I gave the go ahead to make the repair . A couple of hours later I got a message saying the car was ready to be picked up. Everyone there were courtious and knowledgeable. My car wouldn't start today and this has station was the closest place that I could find to where I live. My car is a little expensive and I have never taken it anywhere except for the dealer after the first year. This .mechanic shop has a great reputation so that made me feel more comfortable. I was able to get it jump started with the help of my neighbor and then I carefully drove it over here without turning off the car obviously. The Manager was really nice, and he promised to have it checked out today. I stopped by during lunch, and I was happy to see that they had made some progress on my vehicle. The mechanic told me that the battery is still good and its holding a charge. They are using a machine to re-charge it. I was told that I could come back in a couple of hours and that the car will be ready. I am glad that they had the availability to help me today. read more

Too often when you bring your car to any garage for something simple, you hear about $300+ of other things you supposedly need. But when I came for a regular oil change, which they did quickly, they checked out the car overall and said it was in great condition, pushed nothing else on me. The oil change cost $95 (which seems high?). But I give them credit for friendliness, speed -- and honesty. read more

I was really sad to learn that this is no longer locally owned but is now part of a large DC chain. Bobby and his brother (the Exxon across the street) have been an institution in this neighborhood! The service seems to be the same, albeit more expensive (I guess that's what happens when you start a monopoly). Some of the garage guys are the same too and it's still a place I'll continue to trust with my car. Expect to drop off your car and come back to pick it up. The lot is REALLY small, so when they call you, they'll want you to come right away. This can be inconvenient if you don't live nearby, something to consider. They don't make appointments per se, just appointments to drop off your car. There's a table to wait at inside and it's not unpleasant to just wait for your car to be ready. All in all, good place, would be 5 stars if Bobby was still running it. No offense to the new guy, but having Bobby's number made it feel local and personal. It's important to have a relationship with the people tending your car and I had that for 3 years. I hope this place earns that relationship back. read more

I had driven to three tire repair centers with a nail in one of the rear tires. Glebe road near Rt. 50, at COSTCO, and at NTB. They all claimed the Porsche I was driving had run fail tires and I should replace both the rear (Good Year eagle 255/50R19 103V) tires for about $600. I googled gas stations that plug tires and MMGS (metro motors Georgetown shell) popped up. I'm from out of state and was in Georgetown for the day, while staying at my friend's house for a couple weeks in Arlington. My car started to make a really loud scrapping sound. I called this Shell service center and they said to bring it on over. It was right around closing time so I left my car there overnight for them to trouble shoot in the morning. I also asked them to change the oil. The car stopped making the noise a block from the Shell station but I still wanted it checked out before I was to drive it back to Michigan. They checked everything out, checked all the belts and hoses and fluids and found nothing wrong. (Something must've gotten stuck under my car?) Anyway, all they charged me for was the oil change and my car was ready by 10 AM the next morning. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! This was in January, the car is still running great! read more

I'm not going to blame Metro Motors Georgetown Shell for my experience. Bottom line Metro Motors Penn Ave repaired my truck several months ago. They supposedly replaced all the spark plugs and coils. The issue with the truck happened again and when I took it to Metro Motors Georgetown assuming it was the same company they assessed the issue and I was informed that some of the plugs were never replaced and they failed. I was told they would contact the other metro motors and see what could be done. Long story short I was charged even more money for a repair I thought was done and I was obviously inconvenienced with having to bring my truck in for service again. No effort was made to have the other shop cover the cost so I ended up paying several hundred dollars more on top of a $1400 dollar bill from the previous repair. Very impressed with my unplanned stop for service here today! I woke up with a flat and called my regular place who couldn't get me in. I rolled over to Georgetown where Jack was able to find the nail and patch my tire within 20 minutes of me pulling up. He explained the whole process and was very personable. Best yet- I expected to pay a premium for last minute service in Georgetown, but was only charged $20 for the tire patch! Would definitely recommend giving them a call with any service or tire issues. They were very nice to work with this morning. read more

Do not go here. I went in for an oil change and tire rotation. They not only charge too much for that, but they tried to add on about $1,700 worth of other things they said a car of my age should do. Are you kidding me? I checked with a trusted friend and he confirmed that none of these were needed, that they just help optimize the engine. The guy had called me after they did the oil change. He told me there were some other things that my car should have done. He listed them off. I had to then ask him how much that would cost. He slowly went through each price like I was asking something crazy. And the total came to that aforementioned abomination. This is not ok. They shouldn't be allowed to try to extort money from people like this. We trust them with our cars which can mean trusting them with out lives and those of our families. When they say something should be fixed, I want to take that seriously. But then you have people like this who try to play on that fear to get as much money from people as possible. I'll admit, I liked this place from the start, but I wasn't won over completely. I would have written this place 4 stars. Bobby did some minor work on my car when I first got to DC, and then 6 months later I switched it up and went to a repair shop closer to where my office was at the time. I left that job a few months back, and I have had 2 interactions with Bobby since. First, I called up to ask a question about my car and he gave me advice on how to fix it right there over the phone. I didn't even have to bring the car in. This most recent one, I had issues with one of my tires making a weird rattling noise during sharp turns. When I brought my car to him, he couldn't find it at first (it turned out the noise was actually kind of hard to make, and required turning the right direction at the right speed). Anyway, within a few hours, he had that fixed AND found a few other problems on the car and fixed them for no extra charge. I tried to pay him for the extra work and he insisted on doing it for free because, in his words, "he'd rather have a loyal customer". Well, he got one. read more

I was too harsh. I was in a really bad mood last year, having just biked through the rain and cold, and I was very frustrated at not being able to buy my brake light. I took it out on the Georgetown Shell; I took it out on Solomon. I recently returned to actually get work done on my car. True to all the five-star reviews, they were fantastic. Bobby the Service Manager was a gentleman who quickly and efficiently got my car taken care of. They fixed all the problems within hours, treated me well, and charged me fairly. Solomon is actually a wonderful man who works hard at his job and serves his customers with a smile. Love this place! Frankly, I was late for a hair appointment and needed a quick place to park my car. I barreled in and thought to get something small like an Almond Joy or an oil change. Then I realized it had been years since I changed my oil, or been to a salon (sort of kidding), so it worked out perfectly. When my hair was done (single color process), so was my car. During this, they topped off all of my fluids, and did an evaluation. (Now that I think of it, both places did.) Bobby, the car guy, pointed out that I had arm assembly problems and a cracked timing belt. I have always had arm and belt problems, and know they can leave you stranded. He ordered all the parts a head of time, and on a subsequent appointment, fixed everything but my real arms. He only charged me $427 -- which is way less than another mechanic had estimated for Elizabeth, my ole Mercedes. Bobby was great! read more

The name "Georgetown" can have a couple different connotations. Sometimes that can mean pricey and douchey, and other times that can mean just straight-up quality. Georgetown Shell is straight-up quality. My car was due for an oil change, and I had an issue with my exhaust/check engine light. I've noticed that Shell oil lasts in my car a little better than brands like Pennzoil or Quaker State. I decided to take it to Georgetown Shell because it seemed like more than just your average service station. And it is! Bobby, the service manager, and Nana, a cashier, are both really nice and helpful. The place is clean, and they took great care of my car. They fixed the exhaust issue for a reasonable price, and my car no longer sounds like a lawnmower! Another plus is that Saxby's is within walking distance, so I was able to get some work done while I waited. This will definitely be my go-to spot for my car in DC. read more

I took my EVO MR in to Bobby to replace my transmission fluid (this stuff is $250 just for the fluid that I bought on my own). I did research and even printed out some things to help Bobby's team do the work and they were open to having some additional info. They did a great job and it was fast! I pretty much searched for automotive service on Yelp and was drawn to Gtown Shell because of their stellar reviews. Could it all be true? Other than being located on a busy corner of Georgetown (Wisconsin and Q), this place is top-notch. It's cool to speak with Bobby because he'll tell you up front what needs to be done for your vehicle. There are some additional non-urgent repairs that Bobby recommended but I didn't have time to have it all done today so Bobby gave me a detailed, convenient to-go sheet as a reminder. Oil change service was about an hour -- just enough time to walk around Georgetown and grab a cappuccino. read more

Our 2008 Subaru Outback that had one of its mufflers on its last legs and its roughly 60K miles brought us to Yelp to search for a local garage to have our regular maintenance done. We rarely drive the car, and when we do its 90% on the highway. So thus far the only regular maintenance concerns we have had included regular oil changes and tire rotations, which aside from our 30K mile tune-up, were typically performed at whatever DC area shop offering the latest Groupon or Living Social deal. (The 30K tune up was performed at a local dealer which was a terrible and expensive experience). The bottom line is that our search was driven by needing a local trustworthy, fair priced, experience mechanic to go to for our immediate repairs and preventative maintenance --and all signs (surveyed on Yelp, Google Plus, AAA) pointed to Georgetown Shell. Location: Very convenient located in Georgetown on Wisconsin Avenue and Q streets. We didn't purchase gas, but the prices were lower than surrounding stations. The shop was impeccably clean -- so if you had to wait inside for whatever reason you wouldn't mind it. Staff: Bobby is the man. He was very transparent. After we explained we needed to have the muffler repaired, and that we wanted to have some (not all, due to budget) of our 60K mile checks performed he and his team went to work. He called us that afternoon to explain what needed to be done and in what order. His priorities, although not explained to us, were clearly our safety, followed by a combination of preventative maintenance and budgetary constraints. He explained which repairs would save us money in the future and which could be dealt with later on down the road. The rest of the staff (female cashier and man other than Bobby who answered the phone were kind and polite too). Quality of work and turn around time: The work done on our car has been great. The car is much more quiet, and the brakes that were worked on feel great -- I guess you don't know how bad they are until you have something to compare them too. The staff vacuumed our car too! We didn't really request a quick turn around time, but we were offered one. We dropped the car on a Tuesday afternoon. Parts were ordered and supposed to be delivered by Thursday morning. There was a big snow storm on Thursday into Friday so we didn't expect our car to be ready, however Bobby called to explain that the replacement muffler had not arrived yet, but the brake job was done if we wanted the car for the weekend. We declined and picked the car up on a Monday (President's Day). Cost: You get what you pay for. I recently got my oil changed by a place outside the beltway (aforementioned Groupon garage). They tried to up sell me on a number of 60K checks. At the time I declined, but kept the estimate. Bobby quoted me similar prices, and if they were at a slight premium I had no issue with it because of the transparency of the management, and the location. Bobby proactively mentioned the coupons they offer on their website! Summary: Georgetown Shell deserves the 5 stars I am giving it. It deserves the average 5 star rating it currently has. We will definitely return for regular preventative maintenance and high priority repairs. read more

We used to come here all the time and had great experiences with Bobby, but things have definitely changed. We got a flat tire and managed to get the car to the mechanic, with the idea that they could fix it when the garage re-opened. The manager seemed upset that we had not made an appointment, said he wouldn't be able to help us, and asked us to drive home or go see another mechanic (even with other customers telling him that our car was not driveable). We ended up calling a tow truck, whose crew very quickly and easily fixed our flat in the parking lot of the store. I would not recommend Georgetown Shell any longer. read more

So after seeing a lot of 5 star reviews, I decided to take my car in to this shop. Just to get right to it; it was my best experience with a mechanic ever. Bobby was very helpful and explanatory for my layman's understanding of cars. He went above and beyond to get me all the information I asked for and the service was extremely fast (got the car back the day after dropping it off; less than 24 hour turn around). Not to get into the finer details, but they recognized a mistake made by a previous mechanic done not too long ago, corrected the issue, and gave me a play by play explanation of what was being fixed with a reasonable quote for parts and labor. It was an extremely painless and seamless operation over all. I know I will be taking my car here for all future car trouble and cannot recommend Bobby and his crew highly enough. read more

I hate taking my car in to get an oil chance, let alone get repairs done. I know very little about cars, for sure, but probably more than the average person. That said, I took my car to the Georgetown Shell after reading the fantastic reviews here. I took it in for an oil change, but it had been a long time since I'd had my car looked at, so I figured there would be other problems. The brakes were kind of mushy and I knew the belts needed to be replaced (evidenced by the loud tweeting sound the car made). So I was expecting the "here's what we found wrong with your car while doing the oil change" call. Yes, the brakes and belts needed to be replaced. Bobby was SUPER honest about the timeline and the importance of getting everything squared away. At first I turned down the brake replacement, and Bobby totally respected the decision-- but I ended up calling back 10 minutes later to have them do the replacement. I dropped my car off at 8am this morning and it was done by 3pm with an oil change, new belts, new brakes (and rotors) and-- to my surprise-- a nicely vacuumed interior. For someone with as much anxiety as I have about car repairs, it was a very calming experience. Bobby made sure I knew exactly why he was suggesting the repairs, left all decisions up to me, and was an all-around great guy to deal with. When I picked up my car, he even saved the the parts he took out so I could look at them and see what the issues were. He did all of this without ever talking down to me and it's much appreciated. All that said, if you have a car in DC and don't have mechanic you trust (or like), take it to the Georgetown Shell and you will not regret it. read more

Georgetown Shell has a new convert. I tend to stick to the dealership when gettnig repairs done, not only because I trust them after having so many bad experiences with random mechanics before, but also because the particular dealership I go to offers me a nice Friends and Family discount for going there, since I grew up with one of the owners. After my experience with Georgetown Shell, it's worth it giving up that 5 - 10 % discount (knowing they probably inflate the price anyway at said dealership). However, when my brakes committed suicide without warning (indicators didn't appear to work on those brakes), I had no choice but to go to the nearest garage to get my brakes fixed. I called Friday morning and spoke with the infamous Bobby, and very carefully drove my car the few blocks down to Georgetown Shell. Customer service was top notch. After getting my car up on the rack, Bobby pointed out all of the issues I needed to address. After getting the hefty initial estimate, we were able to compromise and get the offending front brakes repaired immediately. Walked down later on to collect my car and it was running perfectly. Bobby even included an estimate for the rear brake work for when I bring the car back. Looking forward to taking my car back next week to get the rear brakes and rotors replaced, and in the future should any other issues come up with my poor 7 year old car. 5 Stars from be because the Shell is: -convenient to my home, which means I can drop it off and go on about my business without needed a ride while my car's in the shop, -wonderful customer service. Bobby is just good people. -price - as I know how much it would cost to actually repair just about anything on my car, especially parts, Georgetown Shell didn't rip me off. They still got their profit, but it was a fair profit, which I can appreciate and respect. -communication. Yeah, this could go under customer service, but I think this deserves its own mention. So many mechanics will give you an estimate that ends up being way off because there were other issues they decided to correct while they were there, and you end up havnig an extra $300 - $400 tacked on to your bill. Bobby called me with an estimate, we discussed all of the issues without being rushed, and it was clear exactly what would be happening with my car while it was there. Looked up yelp and the highest score was Georgetown Shell, coming in at 4.3 stars. Not 5 but worth a try. I don't know why they are a 4.3, Bobby and team are a 5+ to our family. 2:00 on a Monday, up against a getaway plan, preparing to drive the 4 hours back to Jersey. Bobby and the team delivered, we needed a radiator replaced, thankfully it didn't happen on 95 heading North. We were out by 5:15, home at 9:15. STAY AWAY! I took my car here for an oil change and tire rotation. When I picked my car up all the tires were completely flat. Not a huge deal, they were apologetic and filled them with air for me. BUT over the next few weeks my car started stalling out so I took it to a dealership. The problem- there was NO oil in my engine. No leak either, seems Georgetown shell drained the oil out of my engine and then just never put new oil in. In the end cost me a few hundred $$ to fix but worse put me in several dangerous situations driving when the car suddenly stalled. read more
