I couldn't start my 1971 Chevelle, but managed to jump start it at my house and get it over to Tenleytown Automotive. Although Mike was busy, he took me out of turn, diagnosed the problem, and replaced the battery, all while I waited. He ordered a special part, kind of a cut off switch connected to the battery, to prevent the battery from draining when not in use, and I drove by the next morning to get it installed. My car broke down and Tenleytown Auto was the closest repair shop so I had it towed there. Ultimately the repairs were not worth it, given the ago and condition of my vehicle, so I had to get rid of it. But over the course of two to three days, Phil and was extremely patient with me as I arranged for the car to be picked up. He was honest and generous, even though he ultimately got no business from me, other than the initial diagnostic fee, which I'm sure did not cover all the time he spent documenting the dozens of issues my car had. Well run service. Easy to schedule a time for dropoff. I was able to call ahead of time and talk to a mechanic to explain my situation and get a rough estimate of what to expect. Couldn't be more pleased - a relief to find Mike and his team at Tenleytown Automotive. I built and restored cars with my neighbor growing up, so know enough to feel when I'm being taken for a ride. After many states and cities, so happy to find a shop that has clear communication, fair and transparent prices, no pressure to do $$$ work. They diagnosed a sensor issue with our tire and did a full inspection of the car. We got a complete report with pictures and written descriptions - not just random codes, three word explanations or abbreviations. Mike then called and we reviewed the report together and focused first on safety. His knowledge and experience was evident when discussing each line on the report. There were no "probably should replace this filter" it was instead an explanation of the state of the filter, priority level, how they would go about resolving the issue (I bring up filters because we've had them swapped before and was very aware of what he was describing and was blown away when he said that not only do they swap the filter for the cabin but they also clean and sterilize the filter box, the duct work, all the way to the vents in the cabin. In the past, I've watched mechanics just take the old out and drop in the new one) if they take this level of detail on something as simple as fresh air in the a/c system, then I know the care and detail will extend to all the systems of the car. We needed to bring the car back after service to get something tweaked and the professionalism and customer service I frankly have not experienced before at any place of business let alone an automotive shop. But I'm so glad I went here -- they were incredibly friendly, transparent, and honest. They did a thorough inspection of my car, which honestly freaked me out a little bit, but then they immediately followed up and told me what I actually needed to get done (which was not that much). This is fine, but if you ask, the owner launches into a manipulative ramble about how "that would take money away from his guys". He could simply pay them the same and profit $50 less. First things first I think I know a few things about cars. I mean I spent six years in the Air Force repairing airplanes and a lot of my friends were car nuts. I am no pro but did change my own suspension 20 years ago. At this point in my life, until I own a 1956 hard top Corvette convertible, (which I will) I am happy to let someone else do the work. I do a lot of my maintenance at the dealership since I bought the 7 year warranty that does not exist anymore, but anytime they propose something out of pocket I go to Tenleytown Automotive to get the truth and low and behold the dealership is not honest most of the time. My favorites were "Oh we don't have that part in stock even though we sold 10k of them," and your brake pads are toast even though I just replaced them." Or you need new tires, (I spent six years in the Air Force as a Crew Chief, I know tires and breaks!). So far they have been very straight forward and fair in their pricing. Great customer service, don't always answer on the first call because they are busy. but it is a auto repair shop not Panera. Pro tip: Walk them through the problem you are having to make sure what you want. Also they use premium oil and hydraulic fluid so no need to worry. Don't believe me you can see it in the back of the tiny shop. Second pro tip: Best to schedule on like a Thursday for a Monday/Tuesday repair. They are busy most of the time. Third pro tip: Never buy gas there unless you are running on fumes. read more

My car battery could not have picked a better place to die all of a sudden! After pumping gas at the station, I had the unfortunate experience of hearing clicks when trying to start my car again. Stuck at one of the pumps, I went to the cashier to report my situation. At first he was unsure he could help since it was late in the day, and then out of nowhere one of the technicians from Tenleytown Auto came out, inspected, the situation, and changed my battery on the spot! The friendly and super quick service was amazing and appreciated! In all, the entire impromptu experience took 20 minutes. I'm an old lady with an old car and, for some car repair shops, an invitation to be ripped off. Not at Tenleytown Automotive. The opposite. I had a problem with tire pressure and they easily could have said I needed four new tires for safety reasons. They most certainly did not try a hard sell. They tested for leaks and the valves and diagnosed that the pressure drop was likely from the bitterly cold weather and the car sitting for days. The charge? Not a penny, even though they spent about a half hour on the car. Not only were they honest, but happily so, including tech Chris. So impressive. I'll definitely be back! read more

I used this shop 2 years ago. Honest, quick, and reliable service. Dec. 28, 2022: My car wouldn't start. I had installed a new battery 3 month ago. Tenlytown automotive said my new battery was bad. They sold me another battery. I also ask them to check my charging system to make sure that there wasn't something causing my battery to die. I also trusted them to do an oil change. I was assured that everything was OK. A couple weeks later I had to get some body work done. I was told they needed to jumpstart my car after letting it sit outside for two days? How can that be when I just got a brand new battery?The next thing I noticed is all of the Lexus fasteners that hold the motor covers down were missing. Someone who went under my hood took all the fasteners off my car? They are very expensive. Tenlytown hasn't admitted to removing them when they changed the battery and did the oil change. I took a picture of the battery to see if they had given me the battery that was in my car. They haven't responded. It is so sad what people are doing nowadays, but I believe that every dog gets their day. read more

Can I give them a -5? had multiple problems, went back to them multiple times, Go to DP around 4900 Wisconsin , DP knows what they're doing. but here are just 2 of those problems and why I think they're terrible.-- heater wasn't working. they changed the thermostat. sound simple but it still didn't work. took it back and they told me i needed a new radiator. I DID need a new radiator, and it's theoretically possible I also needed a thermostat but my guess is they were lazy in their diagnosis, jumped to the conclusion I needed a thermostat since that's usuallyt the problem, when I just needed the radiator... but here's the second problem: I smelled gas all the time. they dropped the gas tank -- a very expensive labor charge of $400-- and put in a gasket around the fuel filter. drove away. went to DP at 4900 Wisconsin for the radiator which was $350 cheaper than Tenleytown's estimate. But car still smelled of gas. DP put the car on a lift and I could see the fuel filter was leaking. How could tenleytownnot have seen that? Had to pay the labor cost again of dropping the gas tank but they felt sorry for me and gave me a break on the labor. (Yeah, Tenleytown might have done that but I had had it with them and I saved so much on the radiator i still came out ahead.) read more

I took my 2015 Honda Civic in for a spark plug change. They do a very comprehensive inspection of the big items of auto maintenance. Turns out my spark plugs were fine. Also my brakes whose condition I was unsure of. So I got an oil change and tire rotation. Everything was completed in a couple of hours. read more

I found this place on Yelp and scheduled an appointment right away based on other reviews. I have a Ford Fiesta that needed an oil change. Their comprehensive vehicle check was very helpful at identifying some issues I needed to get fixed. I loved the online system that allows you to see pictures of everything that needs to get done. I dropped my car off at 8am (my scheduled time) and I told them I needed my car back by 2:30pm and if they needed more time to work on my car I'd bring it back another day. By 12:30 I had a text saying my car was ready to be picked up!!! I was so happy. The prices are very fair and they send a great estimate. My front tag needed to be put back on and I didn't even ask them to do it but they did it for me. I am so grateful! After going to 4 different places including my dealership and being told it would be too much of a hassle to put my tag on, these folks did it with no problem! I will be coming back here and telling all my friends! As a woman I find it difficult to deal with any car related things and be taken seriously, but not here.
