Do not make the mistake of going to this place the guy that owns it is a slimy con man. If you allow them to replace parts on your car, you can count on the fact that they will be used and probably will fail immediately like it did my car. They told me that they were replacing a serpentine belt, but that was only after they told me it was not a big deal if I tried driving with it snapped, which a huge mistake. They told me they were replacing it, and it snapped the first time I took the car out for a ride and got sucked into the engine of the car. I had to have the car totaled, but fortunately my insurance paid out because they found that this body shop was at fault. Thousands of dollars later and lots and lots of aggravation and time I was able to buy a new car with the insurance money Now I am trying to find a way to recover the loss caused by this body shop. I've been told this guy owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes and is a scammer. STAY AWAY!!! I would do negative numbers, but it's not an option read more

I took my 1983 Mercedes Benz 300D to American Foreign Car Service and was very impressed by their professionalism, honesty and knowledge. Not every garage can take on a 40 year old car and do repairs as though it was nothing out of the ordinary. I had my rear axles replaced, the front end rebuilt, motor mounts replaced, transmission mount replaced, new fuel lines and glow plugs. Pedro was excellent with communication and was very non-judgmental about my old car that has over 450,000 miles on it. Without any hesitation, I would encourage everyone to use this garage. I have known Pedro for years and he has always come through with a smile and a sense of humor. I am thrilled that he got me back on the road safely and very reasonably priced. Lack of comprehensive diagnostic capabilities. They strung me along for months after initially paying for an incomplete and incorrect job. I came in for engine coil and spark plug issues and after bringing the car in **five separate times for the same issue and over a thousand dollars later** the problems persisted. They much later mentioned that they did not have the diagnostic capability to determine the exact problems (but they were happy to take my money). Per my BMW dealer, they were also replacing parts for the wrong car model. Pedro may be nice, but I received constant excuses, changing answers, and virtually no phone calls for an update. read more

The last time I brought the car in was for a tune-up and general examination before taking the car on a long road trip (as I explained when I brought it in). This cost me $350, for I'm-not-exactly-sure-what. Whatever it was, they apparently didn't detect that my car needed new transmission fluid or, more importantly, that there were cracks in the sidewalls of the tires that seriously threatened a blowout. So let's begin with Pedro is a nice guy? They had my car for a used engine replacement for 2 months and 10 days, I had to call to find out what was going own with the Repairs. I could never get a straight answer from him, then I'm told the engine has noise issues and they were trying to fix it. When asked about the noise I was told they realized it came from a manual car not an automatic. (1mth and a half) 2 weeks go by I call again this time he says the car is ready to test drive. Hmmmm, I drive and do a brake check and the engine wants to stall out almost at 100ft. I drive for about 6 blocks and it did the stuttering 4 times when braking. Then he rides with me, his excuse was the way I was driving and braking @#*@*#×! Kidding I work at a car dealership. He claimed he had no problems when he test drove it. I left the car with him to fix. 3 days goes by this time he claims the throttle body was fouled up and they would clean it. These are pics of the engine with the alternator bolt coming out, a bolt plugging a hose and a ....... @#$%*#&$ Rim Valve stem as a plug. I found this after my woman tells me to drive the car because she heard some noise from the engine. I could go on, but this is enough, don't trust him or use the shop! Looks like other reviewers had some issues with bigger projects. My review and experience only cover a very small job done on my car. Specifically, I had to change my license plate and the screws were rusted and stripped. The owner/manager told me I could bring down the car and he'd do it for $20. Unfortunately, American Foreign Car Service is not open on weekends so I called around a bit to see if I could get it done faster. Most places I called wouldn't even do it for me, and then I got a quote from yourmechanic for $80. Um. Okay. I took it in on a Monday and I stood close by while someone worked on it. The entire time I was kept in the loop about what was going on [steps taken to try to get the darn things out.] Probably took him about 20 minutes to get it out. He kind of took a shortcut and drilled one new hole (a little above the one screw he couldn't get out) and put in one new screw. My license plate is a tad bit askew now, but I kind of don't care and it was done quickly and pretty cheap, so I'm basically alright with it. Now I have the right plates. Woop. I'd definitely come back for small jobs. read more

This place is price gouging I'm guessing in attempt to make up for revenue lost due to the Pandemic. I needed an oil change they come over to me after looking at my car for one hour and tell me that 6 things including a serpentine belt need to be replaced. Oil change was not on the list but an item I had just replaced was the serpentine belt. They probably would have got me had she left the belt off the list you ready for the grand total? Pedro and Miguel are brothers that have run this auto repair shop since '84. I had an oil leak repaired shortly after I moved to the neighborhood, and now they wave hello to me every day. They recognized my car and called the police on the guy who smashed my window in the middle of the afternoon while I was at work one day. They fixed my broken window and the window frame where the brick had bent it, using cheap glass from the junkyard to save me money and fixing in within hours so that I could take the weekend road trip I had planned. They fixed my friend's brakes and rotors for a couple hundred dollars less than her quote from Midas. They have consistently been trustworthy and affordable for all my car repairs, which is important for a girl that knows little to nothing about cars. They also BBQ on sunny Saturdays outside the shop. For all these reasons, I adore them and highly highly recommend you patronize the business! read more

Someone hit my bumper and I opted to have my insurance pay them to install a new one. Everything went smoothly at the time. Fast forward to a few months ago, someone else ruined my bumper (this is what happens when you live on a busy residential street in DC). So I go to another shop (Arlington Collision).As the guy is inspecting the damage he asks me if I had ever had damage to my bumper. So I explain to him that yes it was replaced once before. Long story short, he tells me that the folks at this here establishment didnt replace my bumper. They patched the old one up using what he described as spackle. So I paid my insurance a $200 deductible, my insurance paid this shop over $600 and they basically glued my car back together. Never ever ever will I ever come back here. I've now dealt with this place twice, and I can no longer recommend it. The recordkeeping and customer service is very poor. I called on a Friday morning and asked Pedro to order a window to replace one that was broken in a smash-and-grab. During the ensuing process, they: -Forgot to place the order -Kept no record of my order -Of course, they don't keep any hours on saturday, making harder to follow through without taking time off work -Forgot to place the order again on Monday, or call me to confirm, when I asked them to order it again... Because of their bungling, I am now facing the prospect of driving 3.5 hours with a missing window, so that I'm not stuck in DC until 6 PM or later on Christmas Eve. Went in for a flat tire patch, oil change and headlight replacement. The owner is nice guy but clearly need to learn how to delegate & return customer calls. I personally am uneasy when a mechanic hangs on to my car without giving me an estimate of the cost BEFORE i pick it up, to confirm that I'm ok with them making the repairs. As it stands today, they clearly have more business than they can handle because of their incredibly convenient location. I never received a call from them the whole 3 1/2 days they had my car, despite repeated promises that I would-- because I got nervous and called after more than 2 days. When I went to pick it up, despite assurances from the owner (when I called for the 2nd time) that it had already been patched, the guy working on my car didn't even know he was SUPPOSED to patch a flat and hadn't taken the spare off the car. Not confidence-inspiring. To be fair, he patched it on the fly while I waited-- Again, they seem like perfectly nice people and I like to see a small business owner succeed, but for me it's not worth the stress of not knowing what work they're doing on my car for how much money and when it will be done, in advance-- & being able to believe the person with my car, when they say they'll get in touch. read more

My friend had recommended this shop for a relatively minor repair, or perhaps I should I say for car maintenance, so I followed his advice not knowing it'd be a total disappointment. And, honestly, I wish I could say anything positive about this shop, but that would not help potential clients have a clear idea of this business's practices. After many visits due to their incompetence and almost $1,500.00 cost, and being forced to take my car to 2 other shops, I found out I had been overcharged for unnecessary parts and labor as well. They tried to sell me parts my vehicle does not even use(!) and performed work that was not needed in order to inflate or justify their charges. The owner himself, Pedro, had asked me for cash, I told him a check was necessary for my records; the invoice I was given after the work was "done" did not properly specify or itemized the work they performed; forget tax. So after exhausting my pleads and patience, and having no other alternative, I had to resort to legal means. They had to pay me back a refund for the money I spent at another shop to take care of my car which was only a fraction of the total. This review is coming a few years after my last service with AFCS. Now that I have had an experience with a very transparent mechanic shop I now know what to look for. In 2015-2016 I had a heap load of issues - timing belt just to name one -and AFCS was nice enough to allow me to store my car at their shop over the course of the summer of me being away. The shop doesn't have much space practically ever but allowed me to drop my car off which I thought was very nice of them, but only to come back from the summer to two tickets that I then had to pay because in their words "I let you keep your car here for months". Yes, I do understand that was super generous of them but I a call to inform me that I received tickets would have been nice as opposed to the tickets being removed from my windshield resulting in me not finding out until I got a letter in the mail saying I owed D.C. due to out of state tags. On top of that, I specifically recall asking about an airbag light in my car and was told "there is nothing wrong with it, just a car defect" and after research and visits to other mechanic it is in fact a HUGE issue. I have a 2003 VW Beetle and this airbag light is on because of a seat belt issue. This means in the event of any accident the airbag would not have deployed. Highly disappointed and just grateful I haven't had any accidents. read more

Miguel and Pedro are quite the team. I came home from a two week vacation only to find my car wouldn't start. I found that this place was the closest to my house and decided to give it a try (after all, I only needed a new battery). I called them up on the phone and Miguel said to bring my car over and he'd have it fixed right up. I drove my car over there (after a successful jump) and Pedro was outside waiting for me with a new battery and his tools. I think I was out of there within 15 minutes. The came a grueling 30 minute conversation where Pedro used scamster negotiation tactics (this wasn't his first rodeo) including threatening to put the broken part back in and accusing ME of ripping HIM off. 3 months later the part he replaced broke and needed to be replaced again (probably because he is unscrupulous and put in a bad part). Took my SUV there for a power steering pump. Two days later I received my SUV back was 10 minutes away from my home and the power steering fluid had leaked all out. I returned my SUV. Receptionist then call me and says it my rack and pinion. They replace that. After that was done she called me and says the water pump is not working. I replace that. I spent $1300 for all of these repairs. Guess what? Car is still not working. I took it to another service shop and they said they never repalced the power steering pump.Do not take your car there. Never get your car serviced here!!! I went for a basic oil change and noticed a oil leak the next morning. I take it back and the manager told me THE NEXT DAY they forgot to change the seal on the drain plug. I drive home less then one mile away and my coolant light comes on. I pop my hood and see my coolant reservoir is completely empty. I fill the coolant tank then start my car back up. Soon as I get out the car I see coolant running from under my bumper. I take it back asap and they say they will fix. They call me THE NEXT DAY and say they have to replace a dealer part so I had it towed to Audi of Arlington. Audi of Arlington said a coolant line was bent and had to be replaced. Total of $1,600 worth of work. American & Foreign Car Service refused to pay Audi because they felt they were being overcharged. The reason I had the car towed there is because they know its their fault and they said they would pay for the damages. So now I have to take them to small claims court because I had to pay Audi to get my car back. read more

So close to the metro, and was impressed with Pedro's honest approach. I had a scratch along one side of my car, and it looked like it was gonna cost a pretty penny to get it fixed. I talked to Pedro for a while and he explained that if it required a paint job it would be in the hundreds. He came out to see the scratch and after assessing said perhaps a buff would do the trick and would cost much less. Others may have tried to fleece me for the paint job, but he didn't. He had his guys do it by hand so they could be extra careful and when he factored in how much time the guys actually spent on it, he charged me below his initial quote.
