Dr. Klein at Metropolitan Eye Center is very thorough. He has been a MD there for 30 years. He did my husband's eye surgery and it was a very successful procedure. He had Lasik surgery. Dr. Klein no longer does surgery. I just saw him today for a yearly eye exam and all good news. read more

This is a long review because I have been trying to live with this condition for a while. In 1993, Dr, Mary Channell from the Metropolitan Eye Center performed an RK procedure on both of my eyes. I chose RK because it had a low failure rate and had been practiced for a lengthy time as PRK was the new procedure, but it had a high failure rate. The RK procedure improved my vision from 20/300 to 20/15 for almost 10 years. In 2003, I began to have an issue with distance in my left eye and went back to MEC to inquire about a Lasik augmentation. They took the measurements on my left eye while it was dilated (but not un-dilated) and told me the Lasik would work. We scheduled the date for the procedure, and I arrived that morning. On the morning of the surgery, I was checked in and given valium for the procedure. It was after this time Dr. Channell advised me that the primary physician at the site change my procedure from Lasik to PRK however I had never been examined by this Dr. nor had I ever met him. The procedure was difficult and caused eye pain while performing it. After a few days I was able to see however I had to use dilation drops in my left eye only to see clearly. These drops only worked for a year until the right eye began to fail from strain. They told me to use the dilation drops in my right eye which reduced strain but did not improve the eye site. I found another Dr. who is experienced with these procedures. He advised that PRK procedures are invasive and can cause this type of issue. I went back to Dr. Channel to discuss this, and her opinion was the eye pressure in my left eye had gotten too high and split the incisions from the RK. When I mentioned the eye pressure comment from Dr. Channell to my 2nd opinion Dr. his expression was enough to convince me otherwise. This Dr. tried to perform a procedure to clean the open incisions and suture them closed. The procedure worked for a while but failed to provide a long-term solution. I went back to Metropolitan Eye Center to confront the Dr. on the failure of the right eye due to the strain and the mistake that was made using the PRK procedure on my left eye. They performed the Lasik procedure I originally wanted on my right eye for free and to date my right eye is fine. The left eye continued to fail, and my new Dr. advised I would need a cornea transplant from the damage cause by the PRK procedure. I was fortunate to have a family contact at the Kellogg Eye Center who examined my eyes and introduced me to a Cornea specialist at the University of Mi Hospital. His examination confirmed that the PRK procedure had damaged my left eye I underwent a full cornea transplant which took 14 months to recover from as the sutures on the cornea were removed one at a time to allow the tension on the cornea to settle in and adjust. After healing from the transplant, I found that the trauma from these procedures had caused a cataract to form. My new Dr. performed that procedure and my left eye vision had stabilized at 20/50 while the right eye was at 20/25. I use glasses to this day but the astigmatism from the surgeries has my left I practically unusable. Reflecting on this journey my only regret was that I gave permission for an alternate procedure to be performed while under the influence of valium. I did not remember the research I had done 10 years earlier that showed the PRK procedure had a high rate of failure. If I had the facts rather than being put in this situation by the Dr.'s at Metropolitan Eye Center I would have had a different outcome. I would rate this company a 0 stars but that is not possible. I would not recommend using a Dr. that changes a procedure when a patient is under the influence of a drug or allows another Dr. who has never seen the patient to determine the which procedure will be used. Moral of the story is "don't mess with your eyes". read more

My husband and I have both had Light Adjusted Cataract surgery at Metropolitan Eye Center. The procedures were done by Dr Daniel Malach.We can not say enough about how pleased we are with the results. M.E.C. exceeded our expectations. My experiences over the last ten years have been excellent at MEC. The associates are professional and courteous, and Dr. Bernthal is patient and very thorough in evaluating my eye health & prescribing the right corrective lenses (I'm near sighted & have progressive lenses.) Most recently, Dr. Klein diagnosed me with diplopia (severe double vision) caused by 4th nerve palsy in my left eye. I was truly terrified that my life would completely change to one where "normal' vision would leave me. Dr. Klein calmly addressed my concerns & explained everything I needed to know about this condition. He had the in-house optical department apply thin prismatic lenses to my glasses to allow me to regain normal vision so I could continue to work and live my life normally. It is now two months later and my vision has been restored about 70% better than it was then, and regular adjustments to the prisms are making this healing process little more than a minor distraction. I have had nothing but great experiences at Metropolitan Eye Center since 2012 or so, and I recommend them at every opportunity to friends & family who have concerns about their vision & eye health. read more

Metropolitan Eye Center is an amazing office and the perfect place to go for any eye issues and concerns. I was recommended by my sister, and was not sure what to expect never having been there before. Dr. Channel was very professional and clear about what was needed, she made me feel very comfortable through the entire process. From the front desk staff, to the technicians, to the surgery staff, all were kind and welcoming and made me feel very comfortable. I was very nervous on the day of surgery, but all team members put me at ease the moment I walked in, right down to offering a warm blanket as they prepped me for surgery. They made sure I was comfortable through the entire procedure. I have worn glasses for over 50 years, but now I see very clearly in both eyes and it is amazing how flawless the entire process went. Metropolian Eye Center scams customers out of money for tests they do not need and even says the insurance will cover it and then charge the customer later. Horrible company and I will never go back. It is one thing to tell a customer they need a test they do not need, but then lie about the insurance covering it. This is complete garbage! I usually give good reviews or no reviews at all and just stop going, but this company went too far by lying to me about a test my insurance did not cover. read more

After losing my long term eye doctor to an extended illness that is keeping him out of the office, I had to find another doctor. I made an appointment with Metropolitan & informed them of my exact situation on the phone at that time (I had been out of work for close to 6 months on short term disability, my vision is so bad, I can not drive or read & have several other serious symptoms). I was told to bring my medical files from the other drs office which I brought to my first visit. I was kept waiting for close to two hours before being seen by Dr. Mullin who barely listened to anything I told him about my symptoms. The exam took approx 8 minutes. I brought all the medication that I had been on during the previous 6 months including a now EXPIRED half empty bottle of steroid eyedrops which he told me to start using again. When I said they were expired & that they had done nothing for me except give me side effects & make me sick when I took them the first time, Dr. Mullin said 'TRY THEM AGAIN' & that was the end of the appointment. During checkout, I gave my disability paperwork to the person setting up my next appointment & asked if it could be done by the time Sedgwick (my short term disability insurance) needed it back. I was told it would be no problem. I figured I would give them another chance & set up a follow up visit which I did for the 21st of Feb. The following week, I called & spoke to Kathleen, the office manager & found out that Dr. Mullin did not want to fill out the paperwork because 'he had no information on my previous condition & had not been the one treating me'. I told her that was why I had brought in my old records & that the doctor I had been seeing was out of the office & I had no return date for him so I was going to have to continue my treatment with Dr. Mullin & that I had explained all this when setting up my original appointment. After a lot of grief including a statement that basically accused me of lying about my other doctor being gone with no referral protocol set up, Kathleen finally passed a message onto Dr. Mullin who returned my call the same day. He said he did not see one of the symptoms that had been one of my complaints & when I asked about the others, he pretty much dismissed them saying that the one complaint had really been all he was looking for (WHY!?!??!!??!) I called back the next business day (Monday) & found out they returned the paperwork & had reported that I was fit to return to work to Sedgwick. There was absolutely nothing I could do about that except request a letter of release to return to work which, according to Kathleen, Dr. Mullin refused to give me since 'he did not write me out, he did not want to write me back in'. ?!?!?! After a week of not knowing whether I would receive the letter & a whole lot of incredibly unprofessional & rude behaviour from Kathleen including a wholly unnecessary observation that she had been there when I called to make the original appointment & that I should have come in that day & not waited a week to be seen - obviously not knowing that I had to wait for my pay date to afford the cash payment for the office visit since I am uninsured - I was told that they would give me the letter of release to return to work. I have to say that Kathleen takes the worst employee of the year award for rudeness, insensitivity, terrible customer service & all around making a bad situation far more difficult than it ever had to be. She had no reason to behave the way she did & did not even consider the stress they put me through. It would seem simple: if the doctor told the insurance company I could return to work, why not give me a letter stating the same thing? All of this was exacerbated by Kathleen's HORRIBLE ATTITUDE & the worst customer service skills I have ever encountered. I will NEVER return to that office & would definitely not recommend them to ANYONE. I would not have given them even one star but could not figure out how to post it without clicking on one. ;( read more

when reading the newspaper became a chore i decided to go to the eye doctor after getting lasik 10 or so years ago. Arriving on time i was ushered into the exam room after a reasonable 10 minute wait. I was expecting to need a laser enhancement but only ended up needing prescription reading glasses, thank goodness as no insurance but might have glaucoma, it runs in the family. Saw a woman doctor there. The tech that did my glaucoma screening was very brusque and actually jerked my chin. When I mentioned that to the doctor, she completely ignored it. And ironically, the doctor was curt, rough, very rough, and unpleasant to work with. My impression after two separate visits is, mean, mean, and mean. Not going back after two tries... This office is...ok. Staff hardly smiles or acknowledged me, the doctor was ok and the girl who took me back clearly forgot to take courses in bedside manner. She cut me off several times after asking a question and was very abrupt. Been going there for 4 years, but after last appointment will not go back. The Dr I had seen is no longer there; he was thorough and good. The New Dr saw me for a total of 5 minutes, despite the fact that I said I was having difficulty seeing she told me that I could see fine and handed me an updated prescription, which she said was essentially the same as my old one. Never asked me if I was having issues. Never tested my near vision at all (I gave progressive lenses.). I have cataracts, floaters, and a history of ocular migraines, and she never even seemed to check. Do not waste your money. read more

I have given them three tries. First, I called for a glass and contacts appointment with a specific doctor recommended by a friend. Midway through the appointment I brought up my contact concerns and I was informed I would have to make an entirely different appointment. I came back three months later and happened to bring my last pair of unused contacts with me so I could remember the brands name as I have had issues with certain brands. I arrived to the appointment in glasses and was told I would only be seen wearing my contacts. Thank goodness I happened to have them with me but being my last pair I wasn't too thrilled. I don't know what you do and don't need for appointments, I don't work in an eye center. They should review these things before you come. I was sent home with two different kinds of trials. One made my eyes red and itchy which obviously isn't their fault. I called to ask if there were other options, maybe something newer on the market that I had also expressed in my appointment. They suggested I stay in my old brand of contacts. I asked again if there was anything new (last 5 years) that I could try. Cleary, if you don't fit into two types of brands this isn't the place to go. The last and final straw was with the eyeglasses store that is part of the center. They are very scattered, even though the building is connected they apparently have no access to your prescription because they needed me to provide that. I was trying to get prescription sunglasses, I provided the frames but needed the lenses. They called me quickly to quote $400 for the lenses and then a few days later called me back to say it was $500 for only the lenses?! My husband went to pick up the frames since I obviously didn't pay that for the lenses I will find somewhere else. He asked for my pupillary distance which they had previously recorded and refused to give it to him! I have paid to have these exams how can I not have this information provided? I would rather get a seeing eye dog than go back here. read more
