I like to go out to Metropolitan golf course in the morning and play the back nine. It's a reasonable deal with a reasonable rate and you can do it walking only I did it twice this week. The course is in great condition and it's somewhat linked style even though I have a tendency to stay in the fairway if you happen to hit the ball left or right your steel have a shot to get to the green exactly just they also have areas for putting and chipping if you want to work on your short game and they have a nice driving range as well and you never have to wait. It's always moving along well and like I said the course is in great condition. They have lots of equipment at the pro shop if you need anything, whether they be shoes, socks, ball, markers, tees, or clothing. I'll continue to go there because it's conveniently located and it's easy to get out and you can get around quite efficiently read more

Metropolitan Golf Links - Fairway - Golf Near Me - Oakland, California

First time trying this track on the Oakland/San Leandro border, literally right next to the airport. Planes fly so close that you can feel their speed and power. Total links style, meaning almost no trees in play, just a big blob of grassy space, but littered with bunkers and a few creek hazards. I'm usually not a big fan of links style golf, but if I get acquainted with one, then one can grow on me, like neighboring Monarch Bay. For a first timer it is just incredibly hard to know where to aim your shot. I ended up in a hazard multiple times after executing a nice shot, to find out 200+ yards later that my ball is either in a sand bunker or worse in a creek/marshland area that I couldn't see from the tee box. Then add stiff winds cuz its such an open space, then it just makes for a really long round. For some reason I did much better on the front 9, then on the back I got killed. The back 9 here is significantly harder, it's almost like 2 different skill levels. I do like the driving range here, as they have real grass, which is super rare these days. I also liked their golf carts, clean, modern and fast. They also have super great deals for seniors, like free golf carts so that's almost a $20 savings from a regular dude. I'm not quite a senior yet so 3 stars for now. When my rate drops to that awesome rate, I'll bump them up for an awesome value. But for now, I'll remain a golfer who gets a penalizing score yet also has to pay a premium. Such is life. But I'll try and give another swing here before summer ends. Round 2 *ding ding* read more

My personal Bay Area Golf Tour took me to Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland this past weekend, and if it was a course I lived closer to, it would definitely be on the rotation. We booked a last minute tee time the day off, and luckily we were able to get something early afternoon. I had played here maybe in 09-10, so it's been a while and had no concept of the course. We got paired up some Metro regulars (shout out David and Chris) and they helped me navigate my way around the course. The greens were in solid shape, which was a surprise. I didn't find the course too challenging. A lot of driver and wedge into greens. The bunkers have way too much sand in them, very thick, making it harder to get out of. Luckily I only hit into 1. I think my biggest issue was the pace of play and no marshall (on the day we were there) to move people along. It was a nice day without much wind, so I'm guessing the course played easier than it normally does. While it's a walkable course, there's very little shade so on a super sunny day, definitely recommend getting a power cart and loading up on the sunscreen. Also huge shout to James at the restaurant. Super nice guy and enjoyed a few laughs while we enjoyed a pre-round meal and some drinks. Speaking of food, it's solid golf course food at a reasonable price. The turkey club was well worth the cost and the fries are like McDonald's light. Overall, I think it's a solid course. Not sure if I'm running to play here all the time given that I have to cross a bridge to get here, but again if this was my home course, it would be solid choice. read more

Did you know the cafe is called the Sweet Spot? I didn't. They've got new hours. Weekdays 10a-5p. Weekends a couple hours earlier. If you want a cup of coffee or a cold energy drink, you can buy it in the pro shop before the cafe opens. Hubby & I had our 19th hole here yesterday Thursday after 1pm. We shared the turkey club sandwich which is humongous. We were able to get a side of onion rings at no additional cost. Hubby got a draft beer. I got a fountain soda. I'm wavering on the speed of service from the kitchen. Is there a new short order cook? And the club was cut into two halves. Whereas nine months ago it was cut into quarters which is conventional. Not trying to be picky but it'd be easier to eat if cut into quarters. The cafe is very informal. Food good portion sizes as I glanced around. We'll continue to eat here on occasion as the draft beers are a good draw. read more

Finally tried this course after driving by a zillion times. Plenty of parking, friendly and easy check in, and a clean cart with complimentary tees. Course is pretty flat, wide open, and not extremely long. Tee boxes and greens were in good shape. Lots of bunkers and water hazards, and a pretty stiff breeze on some of the holes. Par on the first, but got tougher as we played through. Sometimes the holes run close to the others and it can be a little confusing which pin is in play. Other than some confusion, it was a fun track to play. read more

Last Sunday, I had a terrific experience at the pro shop at Metropolitan Golf Links. Doug went far above what most people would do--especially considering I was only buying a $25 glove (and a small bucket of balls). He took the time to ask a few thoughtful questions and recommended a glove that cost about $5-$10 more, explaining it would be worth it. He was absolutely right--the fit was perfect, and without his help, I likely would have chosen a lower-quality glove. , When I asked for his name to include in a review, he modestly said it wasn't necessary. As a former sales manager and customer success representative at Oracle, I know what good service looks like. Doug clearly cares about helping customers make the right choice. Played here yesterday in a golf tournament. Course conditions were pretty good. No mud patches, most of the fairways had plenty of grass. Greens in good condition and rolled smoothly most of the time. Consistent speed from hole to hole. My biggest complaint is the ability to find yardages around the course. Tee boxes don't have any yardage markers. Sprinkler heads in the fairway with yardages are rare to find and require a lot of searching to possibly find, wasting time and slowing down the pace of play. This course either needs to add more sprinkler heads or yardage markers across the course or add GPS to the carts. Otherwise, the course puts the onus on the golfer to have their own GPS or yardage tool. For what this course charges and for how it bills itself online, this crucial part missing is disappointing. read more

Chill golf course. It's been a long long time since I played here. But conditions seemed like the same from what I remembered. Might have to be fact checked here, but I think Metro is the only public golf course in the East Bay that has a grass driving range? Not 100% sure, but I feel like it is. If you play here, expect to battle the winds. Being so close to the airport and port there's a lot of winds. It looks simple but has it's own challenge of clubbing up, clubbing down, etc. I think on Tuesdays Oakland residents can play all day for $29, which is pretty nice! read more

It's been nearly 4 years since I left that review and am happy to say, I haven't had even further issues while golfing at Metropolitan golf links. I'm now giving them a solid 3-3.5 stars. We golf at Metropolitan almost every week sometimes twice a week. We hardly ever eat at the cafe because we've had previous bad experiences. We usually go to close by eats rather than eat at Metropolitan. Today there were 12 of us and we decided to eat at the cafe since we all received a $5 voucher for the greens being aerated. Now we've been reminded why we don't eat there. Not friendly good customer service either! I ordered the club sandwich which the toasted bread was so hard because it was cold. The french fries were really cold!! Seems the plate had been sitting there for a long time. We did wait quite a while before we were served our orders. Two or three of the other 12 even had to go ask where their order was? Some of us already finished our meal and some still didn't get their meal. Honestly I'd rather use it to get merchandise at the Pro shop than eat there again! Terrible service and terrible food! read more

Totally enjoyable golf course located on Bay Farm Island right next to the Oakland Airport. I've made a couple of visits and totally enjoyed it both times. Solid value. The geography of this land sets up quite flat, much like the Corica Complex on the north side of Bay Farm. It's a forgiving course and just a lot of fun to play. I recommend it if you are playing in a group with varying experience levels. I'm also a big fan that they are not godforsaken cart path only. Good enough driving range, and they have a pretty solid little Bar/Grill if you want to grab a quick bite or beer. read more

As you can see from my prior reviews, i've been going to this place for a long time - as a long time Oakland resident, I have liked to consider this my home course. Great design, nice people and many, many great times with friends. I actually cannot believe how bad the course has gotten. I was going to leave a review a year or so ago but we started going elsewhere. One pic with a ball near a bunker was a year ago - there is no grass and i'm greenside and the bunker has a puddle...there was no rain!!! The other three were more recent. This makes me sad. It was August and, obviously there was no rain - why was the bunker sopping wet? Why was there groundcover growing into the bunker? Why did the green have a bunch of sand filled holes...and if there was some problem that necessitated that, why not put the hole up front away from it? Seriously...what is going on here? With that said, you might wonder: why the 2 stars? Very simply, it's the bloody marys. read more

We went here on a Wednesday Teetime at noon. They have a driving range and they had grass as your hitting surface. This is better than hitting on a rubber mat. We noticed several groups ahead of us and started our Ttime as scheduled. The course is very challenging. There are several holes where you either lay up or go for it on the greens. If you do go for it, you've to make sure you get the right club or your ball will get lost on the water or bunker. There are several holes where you see planes flying over you since this course is near Oakland Airport. I don't like their fairway or Tee box since most of them are not maintained and have several brown spots. If you land on them, it's a tight lie, and if you're not good at hitting them, you'll shank or top the golf ball. We saw several maintenances on several holes replacing these dead spots with layers of grass. If you play here for the first time, it's a very challenging course. Depending on your handicap, they will test your golf management skills. The putting greens are wide but you have to read the greens for slopes and breaks. Their par 3 is reachable and you have a chance to make a birdie or par We enjoyed this course but except for the patches of brown spots on the fairway, we will come back and play this course again read more

Joke of a golf course. Doesn't respect tee times, the front office is rude, and they don't manage the pace of play. 6 hour rounds are routine here.. don't even want to know what they are on the weekends. Course condition is also just ok. I would play at Corica every time vs deal with the jabronis at this course. Edit: in response to the manager. I booked a solo tee time 30 mins out to insure I didn't play with another group. The pro shop guy tried to lie and say I booked the earlier tee time. He moved me back to my original then proceeded to let the tee time after me join up without asking which is what my complaint was for. read more

I went to this course for the first time and I love it! The driving range is really small because half the range is reserved for Cal students and lessons but I do like that you aren't playing on a mat but real grass instead. The course itself is maintained really well and the tee boxes were all in phenomenal condition despite covid. The course is a really simple and easy layout so it is definitely a good course for beginners as well! I played my best game here which is surprising because I usually do poorly when visiting a course for the first time. The greens were fast but definitely more simple than you'd think. I was over reading the lines a lot because I thought the greens would be like Corica. I had more than 8 birdie looks but missed my putts to put it into perspective. I will definitely be back! Price is really high but definitely worth it once in a while. About $180 for two people with cart on Saturday. This course seems very walkable too so definitely will consider walking next time. Staff was very nice! I was scared after reading the reviews but pro shop employee was kind. read more

With SIP in place it is really tough getting tee times. Our group of 8 or 12 play twice a week. Metro was our go to weekly golf course. Now that doesn't seem to be the case. Instead we get a lecture from the guy checking us in about how we have to double up and have to play with our spouses from the same household. He rants on and on and not in a nice way which is quite upsetting. Then he lectures us again about how they don't have any carts left and if the county checks IDs on the golfers they better be from the same household or they could get shut down. I get what's he's saying but I we've played there twice now and we keep getting the same lecture. Other golfers arrive and they get 4 carts for their round no questions asked and no lecture. We pay just the same as any other golfers. This makes me not want to play here or Check in to get this lecture. I'm here to golf and have a good experience and This is not making my round a happy one. read more

I play Metro a fair amount; it's easy to walk, easy access for me in terms of location. I played it shortly after it opened. When it opened, it was beautiful, lush and green. Now, sorry to say it very "inconsistent" in terms of conditions. Many spots with no grass, other spots where weeds have taken over. On the upside, it appears the put effort into maintaining greens. Greens aren't gorgeous, but absolutely acceptable. Driving range is easily accessible; when open, practice (chipping) area is useful. Decent hot dogs. Glad I can play there, will continue to go back. read more

This is an amazing place for a Wedding. Angela the venue manager was great and very quick to respond. The price was very affordable. The location and view was fantastic!! The four star rating is only for the banquet room. My husband and I don't play 18 holes of golf. Basically, we are not golf fans. However, I do love Arnie Palmers, a drink made popular by the late great Arnold Palmer. That's about as far as it goes. I am not much of a Tiger Woods fan either due to his remark of his ethnicity background (90% Oriental, 10% Black). That's another issue, and it's neither here nor there. Purpose of our visit: My high school classmate had her retirement party in the banquet room at this golfing venue. After working for 30 years for the Oakland Unified School District at Oakland Tech (our alma mater, Class of '70), she decided to retire from the labor force and join a few of us retirees. Now she can say she OG like me. LOL The banquet room is spacious with a good view of the outside gazebo and rows of white chairs. It has a dance floor and an area for deejay set up. ("Let me see ya move it on the dance floor, baby." Sing it, Zapp & Roger.) The ambiance is a nice one. The food was edible and pretty good. The Caesar and spring salads were freshly prepared. The slices of roast beef was a tad on a tough chewy side. I enjoyed the chicken/mushroom entree with salad, pasta and steamed veggies. I should have grabbed more of the meatballs in the chafing dish and the miniature crabcakes being served by the wait staff. The appetizers were delicious. The wait staff employees were pleasant and helpful. The venue looked decent enough for parties, wedding receptions, meetings, class reunions, etc. read more

I always have a great time here. Been coming for the last few years. They host an annual event Googie and Friends Tournament that benefits 5 Oakland Junior clubs alongside the City of Oakland. Always great to see the turn out and smiling faces! Even had big names like Jose Canseco, Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, etc The course itself is a decent size, right near the Oakland airport, so it can get a bit loud depending on the plans coming in.. and very windy at times too. So if you love challenges this is a great course to practice on keeping your focus! Staff from the banquet room, club house, to the cafe, etc have always been friendly and open to communication. Wear a smile, bring layers, and enjoy yourself and the game. I have played this course about 2-3 times a year and I am surprised that I have not reviewed it. Well here goes. The course is pretty nice and difficult though the fairway grass is a little sparse and at times feels like you are hitting from dirt. The greens are in pretty good condition. The bunkers can seem like dirt instead of sand. The toughness of the course comes from the constant wind that streams from the Bay. At its worst it can probably gust around 20-25 mph. I am sure it can be worse. There was one instance, a while back, when I played with friends in a light rain. I noticed that the course did not drain very well and there were many standing water spots on the fairways. This course used to kick my b*** but recently I have been able to score 80 or below recently. I will definitely return to play here again. read more

Shelley, that attitude of "let the players sort it out" is exactly the problem. You know how slow and how bad golfers can be. It's your business to manage and keep players on pace. Don't just take money and expect no problems. Hire the right personnel and pay them to marshal the course. Be proactive not reactive! read more

This used to be a nice course, but it's not maintained well at all. There are large patches of dirt all over the course, green side, in the middle of the fairway, you name it. I don't think it's a water issue because other parts of the course are flooded. The course has also been overtaken by weeds, which would be manageable if mowed correctly, but for some reason they grow exceedingly tall. They're all over the course as well, again, even green side. Really a shame what they've allowed this course to become. Green fees are way too expensive for what you get. I'd say the management should be embarrassed, but they obviously don't care if they let the course get to this point. read more

Very worn out course, it has a nice clubhouse driving range the grass has been let go you're hitting off a dirt. Parking lot spaces are unbelievably small. Greens are in fair shape. There is no ambiance to the course at all no real nice features not many trees Some places smell like poo when you are crossing some of the spillways or creeks or whatever they are from the cesspool treatment area if I didn't know better I would think that American golf association was running us fairways are nearly just gone . read more

good links course but you better bring ALL of your golf skills as this course will test you however it normally wins. During windy days, this course will get the best of you. The winds can make you indecisive and hit between 2-4 clubs against the wind however down wind enjoy 300+ yard drives! Electric carts, fast greens, and challenging layout. for newbies to the course, aim for direction poles from the tee box. when you come across kidney shape greens, layup short or aim for open side of that green. landing area is too small and greens are firm for your ball to bounce off into the first cut or way out to the rough. beautiful driving range and prices are reasonable. as the other have mention, make sure your belongings are out of site for thieves in their parking lot. mask required on club house property but on the range and course, free for all. read more

On the 18th hole, my friend made a wager with me. "If I get a birdie, I'm going to ask xxx out". Well, he drained his birdie putt, but he still has not taken xxx to the 19th hole. Oh well. I still love playing at Metropolitan early in the morning. The early morning golfers know how to move quickly, the course has marshalls stationed around to keep things moving, and if you're playing more than a 4 hour round, then you must suck. There are some rough parts in the fairway, but hey...feel free to bump your ball a bit when you get on a bald spot. read more

What a fun course! The layout is interesting and the conditions are fantastic for a cheaper course. Positives: - Fun course, with an interesting and unique layout. Links style with fun hazards - Greens roll very true and are quite undulating and tough....but fun! - Robot delivery for beer and food!! - Well located, fun to watch the planes land Some of the negatives: - Lots of birds and feathers/droppings make it hard to find your ball sometimes, even in the middle of the fairway. - Not easy to find a distance marker on the fairway, so bring a range finder or download an app that tracks your GPS location - Pace of play can slow down later in the afternoon. read more

Playing here for the second time in two weeks. First time it took 3 hours to play the front nine because of very slow play. We ended up playing 14 holes - couldn't take it anymore. Second time we haven't even teed off yet. At least a half hour behind. Brutal starting time management and player monitoring, e.g high handicappers playing from the blue tees, no on-course marshal, etc. Unfortunate because course and conditions are pretty good. Was $85 to play with a cart, no thanks. For that much money can I get a few warm up balls, or maybe just THREE groups on the tee. Metropolitan is a really nice course but it's seen better days. The condition of the course isn't as good as it was when it first opened. The normal rate for the course is overpriced for the condition it's at. Better rates can be found at comparable courses close-by like Monarch Bay, Chuck Corica, or even Skywest. It's near the OAK airport so you can imagine it gets windy here sometimes. You can also view many smaller aircraft approach landing on certain holes. So close, it feels like you can hit them with a high wedge shot. One thing I really like about Metro though is that they have a fully equipped practice facility that includes chipping area, pitch area, bunker area, putting green, and driving range. It's definitely a good place to learn and practice the game. One thing I hate about the course is the numerous environmentally sensitive areas which most people that golf here disregard to no avail. Ignorance or just persistence to find a $3 golf ball? Tell you what guys...don't play that PRO-V1 if you can't break a 100. I do like finding them though when I walk the course...and, man, there are tons to be found. The layout of the course is basic and fair. The par 5's are very reachable if you get a good drive and the wind isn't fierce that day you're playing. Pace of play is about an average 4 to 4 1/2 hrs but it's kinda in a honor system because I never see a marshal in the weekdays. I don't know about the weekends...I prefer not to play here during those days because it's pretty much overpriced and every country hack is out there Sats & Suns that make the course play at a ridiculous time from what I remember. The bunkers are in good condition and the fairways are wide enough for the most part. It's a good course...just not good enough for me. The employees here are kinda SO-SO also. Man, where's the service with a smile. And, the fact they have signs in the parking lot that say "park at your own risk" doesn't assure me that my vehicle will be safe while I play golf. Helpful tip: You don't always have to hit Driver off the tee in this course for the holes that are less than 400yds. A Fairway Wood and Medium Iron combo pays out in dividends better than the riskier Driver and Short Iron combo. Wayward tee shots...you can kiss goodbye to the lakes, OB, red stakes, or environmentally sensitive areas. read more
