Called this company for a quote, and the receptionist said someone would call me back. Waited 24 hours, but no call back. Strike 1. Tried again and spoke with Rob, who arranged for a walk through to estimate pricing. The person responsible for the walk-through appointment did not show. Strike 2. Called Rob the next work day to find out what happened. Got put on hold, then told I would get called back. It's been more than a day, and no one ever called me back. Strike 3. I cannot begin to express how impressed I was with Matt and his team from the first moment we spoke. We had these movers assigned to us through the military. They were on time and very quick. They spent 2 days at our house and both days were shorter than expected. First day, they packed the whole house from 8-2. The next day they packed the whole truck from 8-12. They were kind and very pleasant. They were accommodating in helping is clear rooms out so we could carpet clean and load our carpet cleaner last on the truck. Mark, Bobby, Manuel, and Juan were very efficient and everything seemed to be wrapped carefull. We'll see if everything comes out in good condition on the other end, but we are pleased as of now! read more

Wow - the estimator was wonderful. That said - I cannot stress enough, do not use these movers. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how nice your estimator is, if the moving team and mgmt is horrible, then it is a horrible company. I only wish I could give it one star - and trust me, the company I work for is going to hear every single detail - and the parent company, Atlas, they're going to hear about it too. We sold our house and the new owners wanted our refrigerators. They paid for them. They placed this requirement in the real estate sales contract - and anyone who has purchased a home knows how serious those contracts are. When the crew came to load the truck, they were repeatedly told to leave the refrigerators in the home. Yet at the end of the day, when the husband checked the progress of the loading, he discovered they placed the refrigerators on the truck. Matt, the foreman refused to offload the refrigerators saying that they were running late and if he did that, they wouldn't be on time. He stated they would bring the refrigerators back to the new home owners the following week. The husband put Matt on the stop when the new home owners pulled up, made him go explain what he had done. Matt said "it's no big problem." Really.... who is in breech of contract here? Will Metropolitan or Atlas come and pay the law suit when the new home owners decide to sue? And does anyone know about what happens to refrigerators when you load them on trucks and drive them up and down the freeway between northern california and southern california repeatedly? They are far more likely to break - and who will pay for that. But even that isn't the best part - the refrigerators were wine refrigerators... and yes, wine was in one of the refrigerators... what are the odds it won't break during the trip? Finally, the exceptionally rude sales manager who responded after we complained, Bob Rivera, stated "We would have hoped that you or Kevin would have contacted us immediately when this happened and not 24 hours later so we could have intervened sooner." Well, Bob, we informed your foreman immediately, and he wouldn't anything. And, Bob, you have any idea how long it takes to get from Vallejo to Palm Desert? You were notified in less than 24 hrs regardless - the incident occurred approximately 5pm, and your company was sent at email approximately 9:54am. But again, Matt, your foreman, was notified immediately. Is this the best customer service you have to offer? You attempting to scold your customer for not contacting you sooner. We'd like to know who your supervisor is Bob - name and phone number.... Please. read more

If you would like your belongings to be put in someone's personal trailer and towed by their personal truck than this is the company to hire! Our movers showed up not in a semi-truck or a bobtail truck with Altas Moving on the side of it they showed up in the drivers personal trailer and truck. We were told that everything would be fine the truck and trailer would be following our driver "Matt" with a co-driver and they would get our things to us safe and sound. We were assured that our belongings did not need to be loaded into a semi-truck. The exact opposite happened. I received a call the day before our things were to be delivered. Great things are going smooth. That would not last! I received a call the morning of our delivery that the drivers personal truck had broke down and it wasn't a quick fix it would be an extra few days before they could deliver our things. We scrambled to buy something's since we could not longer stay at the hotel they were booked up. We still had no indication that something bad had actually happened to our things. The following day we received a call that our things would be arriving late in the afternoon. Great! So we thought. Matt arrives in a semi-truck with our things and a lot of local movers he had hired. (The local movers were fantastic) Wait.... how did our things get into a semi-truck trailer? Matt explains your stuff barely fit when we transferred it. As they started unloading our things it very quickly became apparent that something bad had happened to our stuff. Boxes were completely destroyed, furniture was in splinters, tv stands were completely shattered, patio furniture that is completely bent and twisted. The guys unloading were bringing me pictures from the floor of the semi truck trailer asking me if the were ours. Yes they were. The damage just wasn't oh I'm sorry I dropped this box. We are still waiting for Atlas to explain to us what happened to our stuff. We want answers... was there an accident, did the trailer slide off the highway...All Atlas wants us to do it take pictures and submit our claim. We paid a lot of money out of pocket for this move and now they want me to continue to spend hours and hours taking pictures and documenting what they destroyed. Our claim is more than double what we paid to be moved. Thankfully I paid for extra insurance! Don't hire this particular Atlas moving company you will regret it. read more

Horrible experience with this company and Atlas Van Lines. After picking up our items, this company changed the delivery date on my move to N.C. from Aug 15th to "possibly" on Labor Day. This is almost a month after the items from my home were picked up. Even though my items are incredibly late, they only reimburse for lodging and half of meals and that is something they will not tell you when you sign the contract. I worked with Emily, who hung up on me when I expressed my frustration. Do yourself a favor and avoid these people at all costs. They have no interest in doing the right thing for their customers. read more

The movers seemed disgruntled, oblivious to our personal things, and seemed to have excuses for everything (whether it be why our furniture was damaged, why my household doors were damaged, why they were late). Even the telephone operator was plain rude. I had to call them 5-8 times in one day without any sympathy, wondering when the movers and shipment were going to arrive. Yes, I waited 8 hours, they said they would arrive at 0800 and they ended up arriving at 1600. I called 5-8 times on the hour. The thing that angered me was that every single time I called, the operator said they would arrive an hour later without an apology. I would NOT recommend the destination transportation service to anyone and would: "RATHER MOVE MY OWN BELONGINGS THAN DEAL WITH METROPOLITAN VAN AND STORAGE AGAIN." read more

Kudos to Dave Smart and the guys at Metropolitan Van & Storage! They helped us out of a VERY tight spot. We had to line up movers for a very heavy, expensive piece of medical equipment to go from an office in Alameda to a different one in Walnut Creek at exactly 4PM on a Friday afternoon, when the unit was being uninstalled from Office #1. We were not sure who in the Bay Area could handle delicate specialized equipment like this, so we asked around and got bids from several different companies weeks ahead of time, including this company. We ended up choosing a different moving company and thought all was well, until the DAY BEFORE THE MOVE, this other company told us they could not help us at the day and time scheduled. This was Not Good. We panicked and started calling every moving company under the sun, but it was late in the day Thursday and all their schedulers had gone home. Then we heard back from Dave Smart, who remembered our situation and his bid for the job. He told us he would be happy to help us, and arranged to have three very nice and professional movers with a big truck meet us at Office #1 right on time. The unit was uninstalled at Office #1 by the equipment people, Dave's movers took over and carefully wrapped the unit and gingerly loaded it onto the truck, and then we made our way through Friday evening traffic to Office #2 in Walnut Creek. The movers very carefully and professionally unloaded the extremely heavy unit and laid all the parts out for the equipment guys to install in Office #2 early Monday morning. Installation went smoothly, the unit is up and running, and now is the time for huge thanks to Metropolitan Van & Storage for making this happen! We couldn't have done it without you. This is the best moving company I have ever used!! From the in home Estimator, Paula, to the young men who actually did the move. First of all, Paula came out and gave me a thorough estimate and then a few days later brought me free boxes and wrapping paper. That was so helpful and saved me a lot. Then when the actual move took place, I needed to bring more than I originally thought I would. the young men didn't complain a bit and said, "no problem". This was a local move from Benicia to Concord. Couldn't decide between one star and two, but gave them two stars because the guys doing the work were very nice and worked very hard. Only three problems with this move. First, the estimator was dead wrong in his estimate. Based on his estimate they sent three guys. They should have sent at least four guys, if not more. The truck showed up early in the morning but these guys were still not finished by 10 o'clock at night, even though they worked their butts off. So after they called the company president to tell him they still had a lot to do, he diverted the crews from two other trucks over here to help them out, and all of them together finally got everything unloaded by about 11 p.m. The main crew as well as ourselves were by then totally exhausted. 15 hours total for a move that should have taken 8 hours. Second, the truck was too small, so we still had to move a bunch of stuff ourselves afterwards. Third, over the next few days as we were sorting our stuff out and putting stuff away, we found quite a few items broken. We have moved several times in the past, but have never had such a bad experience before, and can certainly not recommend this company for your next move. read more

We had a perfect experience with Art Murray (the sales rep and coordinator of the move) and Metropolitan Van. He estimated the job after two hours of investigation, at no obligation. Art provided lots of helpful advice and materials. Their crew of five and two trucks came on time, worked faster on both ends than expected, and they were most enjoyable to work with. We are very pleased to recommend Metropolitan Van & Storage. We utilized them to pack our entire home, store the belongings for 6 weeks and then provide move-in over 2 hours away. They were professional, competent and courteous. The rate we were charged came in under our budget and the entire process came off without a hitch despite our very steep driveway and multiple levels inside the house. The crew was truly a great bunch of guys who do whatever it takes to get the job done and keep the customer happy. The folks at Metropolitan Van did an amazing job on our move. The team was simply amazing. They did a great job packing up all our stuff carefully. They checked in to make sure they were doing things correctly. The 5 guys that moved us were the nicest guy you could ever meet. They made sure they were putting all the boxes in the correct room and the furniture was placed in the correct place, They were on time both days (actually early) and ready to work, the only time they stopped is when we fed them lunch. They moved our house last fall, damaged a painting for which we paid extra for crating. They also broke a porcelain stool. I sent in a request for reimbursement but never heard back. Although I did not personally hire this company, I was forced to deal with them. It was a nightmare. The packers seemed willing but the management were rude and unhelpful. Some boxes were packed properly so somebody knew how to do the job but most were over stuffed with no regard for the contents. The inventory of what they packed was totally useless. the process of moving can be an emotionally trying experience. This company made the situation worse. This is my story Hello Brian and Elizabeth, If you look on my order for my move you will see Elizabeth said there would be 10 wardrobes. The crew showed up with 7. They were not the large ones either. Elizabeth also said they would come with extra wardrobes that I could buy because I calculated that I needed 13. There were no extra wardrobes. The guy who was the foreman or head of the movers said we can get extra wardrobes so that we would start the packing, but he never did. I should have refused to move at that point. I work in a bank and have clothes for winters on the East Coast so I have lots of clothes and some very heavy coats. All of my clothes were crammed into the wardrobe boxes. You could not slide your hand down into the box. I had about 10 plastic bags full of very light bulky items that Elizabeth said I could put in the bottom of the wardrobe boxes. There was no way to slide anything into the bottom of these boxes. I purchased a space saver wardrobe box from U-Haul to box my dried flower arrangement in. At the bottom of the box I put sofa slipcovers around the base about ¾ the way up. It was very stable. I learned this from my last move with Hanson's. I showed the foreman the box and said it was very fragile and nothing could be put on top of the box. I learned the foreman was not a professional residential mover and in fact his full time job was a flatbed trailer driver for cross country trips. He only fills in for Metropolitan when he is in town. He was not concerned about my move or belongings just getting the job done. After the crew left my new address, I starting going through my boxes in the garage and looked in the top of my space saver box. Guess what! I see my smashed lamp shade on top of my smashed flower arrangement. Along the side of the box I see the lamp pole. I don't know if the box fell or something was put on top of it. I expected the foreman guy to manage his crew and he didn't. That is what happened the last time I moved with Hanson Movers from Redding, Ca. Everything came to Vallejo in perfect shape. I believe it was the little skinny guy who boxed the lamps and so put the lamp shade in the wardrobe box. He boxed the other ones perfectly but ruined my lampshade and my dried flower arrangement. Everything is sagging in the arrangement where before it was about 6 inches taller. It was also thinner and now just bulges out. You can't put anything on dried flower arrangements obviously. The little skinny guy is also the one who came up to me at my new address and told me the glass from the seascape photo was broken and had fallen over, so I knew about that. At my new destination, they unloaded my belongings and paid no attention to what was labeled on the box, so I have boxes in my house that need to be in my garage. I bought a hand truck to move them. Also you mentioned did I realize there was damage at the new location at the time of delivery. Do you really expect that clients will have time to check for damage at that time? Also do you really think filling out a survey at my dining room table with the three movers sitting across from me, will be an honest one?? That is not a customer survey. Also the foreman guy, said a couple of times he would write up the damage from the glass for the photo, however that was conveniently forgotten. It was the worst moving experience I have ever had. I have moved cross country several times and locally 3 or 4 times. Background, we have been professionally moved from the US to overseas and back, coast to coast 3 times, and 2 times in California, north to south. While no move is 'perfect', this move was clearly the worst. What was completely unacceptable was the bending of items to fit into boxes (and yes we have pictures). A metal cleat to hold a shelf was bent. A soft bound atlas was bent to fit in a box; completely ruining the item and the binding broke. Book covers were torn when apparently slide into into boxes. As my partner paints and I photograph, we had numerous unframed prints, while little dollar value, tremendous personal value; the handling of these art items was not done properly; items were again, bent when place in boxes. Unframed art needs to be transported flat and not boxed with other items, such as framed items. Items were transported vertically and boxed with other items, completely ruining several of our personal art items. The bedroom mattress, a very light weight mattress (a Tuft & Needle foam mattress) was first dragged down the hallway on its side and then boxed in the garage. No floor covering was used over our rugs and a white rug had numerous shoe prints; as we only use house slippers indoors, these were not our prints. Also, an item was lost, the first major item lost in all our moves. When we contacted our agent to file a claim, the next day received a response that we had to file using their form. After sending this in, we did not hear from them; so, after a week, we contacted them to determine if the claim was received, as it was sent by email. The claim was received on 1 Feb and it is now 18 Mar, 45 days later; we have not heard any response. read more
