If you are looking at this company for a non-corporate move, please run, RUN FAR AWAY. Let me put it this way, corporations move people around and they are the big customers, the VIPs of the arena, the priority. If you're hiring them to do a private move know that you're at the bottom of the list. Your things aren't going to arrive as promised, they are going to be delayed and there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about it. In January of 2016 we contacted Metropolitan to come out and quote us. Paula Flores was our agent. She did what we thought was a thorough job of inspecting our things, our house, our needs. We wanted them to pack us and put our things in storage, moving location was TBD. The packers actually did a very good job. No glass was broken on arrival. Two bookcases and an ottoman were completely ruined, however. I want to stress here that Paula talked a very good game. She went on and on about their Diamond Certification and how it really set them apart from "other" companies. Atlas this, Atlas that, we are the best, they store voting machines in our warehouse, on and on. We really trusted Paula after all of her sales pitching. My husband, a 10 year United States Navy Veteran, was taking a sabbatical from work. We packed two small suitcases with our clothing and our two dogs and drove across the country. We stayed in a home with every single item needed to live a stress-free life, all of the necessities for day to day living which is extremely important for Veterans. Stress and upset to daily routine can be difficult for them. We paid around $4000 for their packing and moving to storage. This was fine, I liked the packers, they did a pretty good job. They packed our mower and I kept saying, "I think it smells like gas" and they agreed that it did and I had them take it off the truck. We had two different crews in for packing and moving but it was fine, been through this before, pretty normal. The real kicker was when we had a final destination for our move. Paula suddenly became "unavailable". We gave her notice of the final moving destination on May 11th. We were closing on our house on May 31st. We had all of our paperwork submitted to Paula within a few hours of contacting her. She said. "I will start your delivery June 2nd." She told us our things would be loaded on 5/31 and delivered 6/3-6/13. We trusted that this was true and drove down to close on our new house on 5/31. I sent an e-mail on 6/1 showing concern to Paula that our load date was now showing 6/13. Paula replied, "I'm not sure what that's means. It's a mistake for sure. I'm sure Jessica will look into it when she see it tomorrow." Well, Jessica did look into it, and we received an email on June 2nd stating our things would not even be picked up until June 13th. What we we supposed to do? At this point we had already come down to Texas with our two suitcases and two dogs, that's it. We had an empty home, and that was all we had. We had already driven down from New England. We did not want to continue to stay in hotels and rack up our credit cards even more. We did not have a SINGLE supply item. No bed, no towels, no entertainment, no seating, no pots, plates, cups, NOTHING. Since we knew on June 2nd that we would not be getting our stuff until the 18th at the earliest we needed to purchase items to get through the days until our things arrived. Paula was no where to be found and we were now passed to Rob. Rob said he was sorry but offered nothing more. We were still expected to pay all fees, all shipping costs, to Texas. They said there was nothing they could do, that it was Atlas's fault, that trucks wouldn't come to California due to smog regulations, a whole gambit of finger pointing. Our things finally did arrive, 19 days later. The movers worked really, really hard. We tipped them well. They also scuffed and scraped the heck out of our brand new home. Our staircase walls are an absolute disaster. Again, we tipped them well and appreciated their help, especially in the heat The one good thing I can say about this company is Michelle. Michelle works in relocation, she works with military relocation. She is an absolute SAINT and the only person in this entire company who really, truly cares. Michelle listened to us and tried to help us and was KIND. She was an absolute doll. If Michelle is your moving coordinator absolutely go with Metropolitan. If she isn't, don't use them. Another $6,000 to get our things delivered to Austin. We've also been told Atlas will only honor delay claims after 6/13, which is stupid considering we were told on 6/2 that we would not have any of our belongings. Are we supposed to roll around on the carpet after a shower? We'll sleep on the floor for 19 days, it's cool. Cooking? Maybe we can roast some weenies on our stove with sticks from outside. This company is a complete racket (minus Michelle). Please do yourself a favor and choose a local moving company and stay far away. read more

We move pretty frequently, averaging every 2 years. This is my first time with this company and it will be my last time. I would give them negative stars. They are terrible from customer service to the sales and claim filing. They have lost multiple boxes and dropped our antique piano (my husband saw the mishandling). After checking out multiple moving company's (for an out of state job) I chose this outfit when Paula (the client coordinator) assured me that my load would not be shuffled from truck, to warehouse, to truck. Many company's will do this apparently but I didn't want my household handled any more than necessary. They were a little on the expensive side but you have to pay for good service right? I booked with them 3 months in advance and wait, and wait. I start calling about a week ahead of time, double checking that every things still OK and asking for arrival times, etc. Paula assures me that 'I'm on the board so don't worry'...whatever that means but I trust her....she's been there 28 yrs, should know what she's doing right? It's now the day before my move, no one has called with any details so I start calling Paula and the office since she's suddenly become unavailable. 3:30pm she calls, seems there's been a mix up. The people loaded on the truck before me were misquoted. Ohhhh, too bad, no room for my stuff!!! This is a problem as I've made arrangements for time off work, car rentals, etc. I call and speak to the Mgr. Rob who at first is unhelpful unless I want my stuff to be transfered to a warehouse & wait for an available driver. I said NO, if that's my only choice then cancel my order. Rob then says to give him some time. A couple hours later he calls back & good news! They have a truck for me. He says the moving men will be different on each end but I'd expected that. Nothing about a different driver. Next morning, bright and early the driver and 2 really hardworking 'movers' arrive. Friendly, considerate fellows, no complaints with them. I'm asking the driver about when I can expect him on the other end but he's unsure, says to call the office. Odd but OK. The following week I start calling, first Paula, no response, then the office, they put me thru to Rob's voice mail. Odd but there's a pattern forming here...Weds an unknown man calls my home number. I call him back....it's a 2nd driver!! Who the hell is Andy?? I try not to take my frustration out on him, its not his fault after all but he's different, the trailer is different and many of my items are broken down! I'm not happy. Andy is a nice enough fellow but if I want to 'check off my boxes' I'll have to stand in the back of the truck with him and won't be able to direct the movers as to where all the items go. I'm between a rock and a hard place so decide I have to trust him. I'm there by myself, what other options do I have? The movers were really nice fellows but made a 3 ft rip in my mattress. Guess I get to figure out how the insurance works now? All in all not a good experience. Many promises were made, whatever I wanted to hear they promised but in the end they did only what they wanted to do even tho I did not give permission for most of what happened. I feel like they wait until the last minute when they have people over a barrel then do whatever they want. They've got your money and you've moved out of the area! A win win for them! read more

Lost 2 big living room chairs plus boxes with shoes, kitchen stuff, business product and supplies. 1 Month after delivery of the main load we still can't get lost pieces. Nobody knows where they are, nobody cares. They play football game with us directing to different people. I understand things can go wrong, but at least take actions to find out what happened and recover missing pieces. Being in the military I have experienced many different moving companies. This company was hands down the best! I was moving by myself with an 18 month old because my husband is deployed and Ron Rhode and his crew did an amazing job! We moved from a 2500 sq foot home to a 1008 sq foot home and the crew never panicked about getting everything to fire and even helped rearrange furniture to another area for functionality in the new home! Just finished a cross country move and everything arrived on time and with very little damage. There were a few hiccups along the way, such as their request to delay delivery by 1 day, and several issues on the unpacking end. But, working with Elyssa, everything got resolved to our satisfaction. Don't be shy! If you are unhappy, work with Elyssa. My only concern was the advice we got from our sales coordinator. He suggested not having dishes unpacked by the movers on "1st night unpack", an extra charge we paid for. Instead he suggested having clothes unpacked from the wardrobes as they take up a lot of room, & movers will take them away. BEWARE! This did not work for us. If you choose to pay extra for this option, be sure to have Elyssa remind your movers SEVERAL TIMES that you've paid extra for this. Elyssa made good on this by deducting it from our move. It's a mere pittance of the total move, but one does deserve to get what one pays for, especially when the sales coordinator highly recommends it. For us, the "unloading team" worked very fast & no one asked if we were satisfied or needed anything more. They left the bed skirt literally wadded up on top of the bed, and I had to grab one of the guys to put it on. Very sloppy job, & I had to grab someone again to do it right. Again, don't be shy! We just did a complicated move (for us at least!) from Northern California to Palm Springs; our belongings were in storage for three weeks until we were able to move into our new house. Matt and his crew really went out of his way to save the day. We were moving to Montana and got 5 quotes from different movers. Atlas wasn't the least expensive but I liked them and decided they would be the best to do the job. They also had free AAA insurance . The estimator made a couple of mistakes which she and I discussed at great length. In the end, I needed a shuttle from my home to the 75'+ moving van. I was up set as this should have been taken into consideration in the first place. The driver that was going doing the driving and physical work was Matt Stockett. He agreed that a shuttle should have been taken into consideration as well as the possible damage to the pavers that he would have driven over to get to our home . We worked out a compromise to deal with the extra cost and the move was made Matt went out of his way to make things right and make me happy with the move . Please spare yourself and your things from Metropolitan. It all started in early August when Fred came to our home for a quote. He was nice enough and very promptly sent us a quote on a Friday afternoon. I also promptly filled out the paperwork that night and sent to Fred. After five days of waiting to hear our paperwork had been received (red flag that they hadn't even confirmed receipt), I called the office. It had been received and I would get a call with the pick up date. I found out our customer service rep was ARACELI CARILLO. Avoid her. She is awful. After several calls, they confirmed they'd be at our house on 8/14. I'd ask for a direct pack and ship (18-wheeler loads our stuff directly). She said she couldn't confirm if that would happen or not. Red flag #2. I begged her to email me so I'd have some paper trail of our conversation. She sent me a one line email confirming our move should be on 8/14. I had told them repeatedly I have a 15-week old daughter and wanted to direct ship so we could go without all her things for as little time as possible. On 8/11 at 4:45pm, Araceli confirmed the guys would be there to load on Monday, 8/14. She still "wasn't sure if it was a direct pack." How is that even possible??? 8/14: 8am. The Solan (Rob, Tom and Denze) moving team arrives. They are picking up our items to take the the warehouse. I WAS LIED TO. THEY DID NOT SCHEDULE US FOR A DIRECT SHIP. That said, the team was great. Super nice. Careful with our stuff. Couldn't say enough good things about them. 8/21: first day of "delivery window." Called the office. Spoke to mark. He said our stuff hadn't been picked up yet but would be on 8/22 and possibly to Texas by Saturday (8/26). Im ecstatic... not for long. Again, I'm initiating EVERY PHONE CALL. THEYVE ONLY CALLED ME 1x!!!!! 8/23: Call and speak to Araceli. She told me it. Is looked like 8/30 for our delivery. She would look into it and call me back. 8/24: at 4pm, Araceli still hasn't called. I call the office. She says our stuff loaded yesterday and is in route but looking like 9/1. The lies continue. Just awful. Just awful. She tells me she's only worked there three months and doesn't know what else to tell me. My husband follows up with Mark who apologizes but generally says now that it is loaded it is out of his hands. What great customer service (not!!!!). 8/25: we speak to driver. He says good are loaded but he had other items to load tomorrow (8/26). He will not be dropping us off first either. He's going to Oklahoma first. I called Atlas Corporate, and a kind lady there told me they should our goods as delayed. Do you think anyone had told me that from Metropolitan? No way. They still have only called me one time and sent one email. I guess that's there way of making sure there's no documentation the horrible, awful customer service. I don't know when our goods will show up or if at all. Cross country moves are stressful enough. They'll most likely get here on 9/1, the last possible day of our window. Please avoid Metropolitan. You'd probably be best avoiding Atlas too. I'd done so much research and felt so good about my selections. I was dead wrong. Please take this from someone who has cried way too much over a move. It will have taken my goods 17 days to get from CA to TX. My husband is making the same drive in two. Metropolitan has the worst customer service. If you get Araceli as your customer service rep, run as fast as possible to another moving company. I've moved with Mayflower before and will definitely take my long distance business back to them. The moving crew who moved us, Juan, Luis and Morris, were very professional, efficient, fast, careful, pleasant, and helpful. We had the utmost confidence in them and their work. They moved a house full of antiques several hundred miles. Everything arrived in perfect condition. They placed all of the items where we requested and set up the beds for us and even put together our recliners. The moving staff that loaded the vans for us in the bay area were also wonderful and efficient. They made The long-distance move a breeze for us and we are very grateful to them for that. We hired this company after seeing them on multiple occasions moving families out of our neighborhood. Southampton (Benicia) They showed up and took inventory of our home giving us a quote / price guarantee. They told us the price would not go up. The estimator they sent was ill prepared to do her job. The estimator came up with a number of 19,481 lbs. for a cost of $21753.96. We signed with them based on their price guarantee not to exceed. We actually reduced the items that we were taking with us. Originally we were taking a refrigerator, washer and dryer, foose ball table, kegarator. We chose to leave them behind. So from the original estimate we should have gone down in weight. After they started to load our belongings onto the truck they begin to say that this is more than what was estimated. They had a higher up come out and my wife ended up signing a change order. Remember they already had our stuff, we were moving, we had a deadline. They charged us an additional $5000 for the move. The price guarantee is not true. The estimator they sent to us was not trained properly. The final weight of the move was 25,380 lbs. They hit us for their mistake in the estimation of the job. Very poor company practice. They also said they ended up using more boxes then was originally planned after I packed the majority of my house. I cant imagine how much they would have charged us had we not packed the majority of our house up. read more

We had a local move with Metropolitan Van & Storage Company in May 2016. We were referred to them by Atlas Moving Company and we were very pleased with the entire process from start to finish. We are used to moving quite often since we are former military and were worried to book our first movers as civilians(not having the military to back us up if anything goes wrong). Moves can be very stressful(especially with kids) but we are thankful everything went so much better than we expected! They were highly professional and came to our house to assess what the quote will be. They worked with us when we asked to negotiate prices. Any questions we had, they promptly responded. The movers came exactly on time, introduced themselves and carried themselves in a professional manner. They moved quickly, efficiently & were respectful/careful with our things. Everything remained intact. The entire move ended earlier than expected...win-win for all! They did accidentally bump into the wall of our new place where the corner got chipped a little. The move leader noted that & they were very diligent about keeping in touch with us on fixing it right away. They followed through and someone came to repaint/fix the small chip shortly after. Overall we were very happy with the move & was one of the least stressful moves we've had(and we've had tons!). Smooth sailing all the way. We would highly recommend and would def use them again. I would NOT recommend using Atlas/Metropolitan Van & Storage. We decided to use them for our move from NorCal to SoCal this year. They came in and gave us a decent quote which was in-line with other quotes we had. The quote gave us a "Not to exceed" price as the bottom line. Once they loaded everything they came back and said we underestimated the weight and want you to pay an additional $1700. I said I wouldn't pay the additional amount as the quote as Not to exceed. This probably did not help us with the rest of our story. They were on-time for pick-up and delivery but lost a number of our boxes. They also delivered to us someone else's belongings which I ended up returning to the rightful owner. They broke several items including an LED TV. The estimator told us to box it ourselves as we would not like the prices he quoted. We used the boxes recommended to us but the TV still arrived broken. Since the box did not show any damage they wouldn't reimburse us for the cost of the TV. The insurance only gets you $0.40 on the dollar and there is a $250 deductible as well, this is for the premium insurance package. They put a small label on each box but the driver doesn't want to wait around while you inspect all your belongings and it's impossible to know which boxes you actually got delivered in the amount of time the driver is willing to wait. We were supposed to get a small check for items we proved were lost/broken over a month ago but have yet to see it. If you're in the need of a moving company, I would avoid Metropolitan and look somewhere else. Mark L. read more

Called this company for a quote, and the receptionist said someone would call me back. Waited 24 hours, but no call back. Strike 1. Tried again and spoke with Rob, who arranged for a walk through to estimate pricing. The person responsible for the walk-through appointment did not show. Strike 2. As two real estate agents in Fremont for many years, we used Metropolitan Van Lines to refer to clients moving out of the Bay Area. They did a very good job and all we got from clients were positive comments. Then a couple of years ago the local manager moved out and we think that is when things began going wrong for this business. With the positive experience, we decided to use them as our mover when we put our home for sale at the end of February to move to the Sacramento area. Their agent came and gave us a quote at a discounted price of $6205 because we were realtors. That included for them to do all the packing and three days to pack and move us. Fortunately, we decided to begin packing ourselves so we packed 85% all labeled from room to room. When the time came, Metropolitan decided not to send the packers on May 29 instead they came on May 30. And immediately the lead told my husband that they were not packing as we owed them an additional $2304 with a Cashier's check. So we were already with them and no way out as we had to move as the house had been sold with a rentback. They began their packing as soon as paid and packed until 10pm at night coming back at 6am to continue the packing. And the results were the following: underestimated the bid by over $2k; Came a day short as scheduled; and instead of going from room to room to pack they mixed everything with no rhyme nor reason with poor labeling. Thank goodness we packed 85% of our things! It has been and still a nightmare to find things as we unpack. Definitely a very POOR transportation company and absolutely not to use!
