Ride Free was my college nickname

Some people say that when I'm in Houston (or Los Angeles), I go off the rails, well this review is proof that I do not. The trains in Houston are as good as any local train I've ever ridden, or let people ride on me, so to speak. They're a little slow (but then this is the south), however they will zip you right through the awful traffic from the Museum District, to Midtown, to Downtown, faster than you can say wow, Houston is a very diverse place with some spectacular looking people. I'll be riding this train a lot more when I'm back in Houston, so to speak.

Metrorail is very convenient. For $1.25 you can get from any station /Hermann Park to Downtown. This is cheap! Its fast and convenience. Note that if you are getting on at San Jacinto this train is heading downtown. If you get on at Fannin street then its going out of downtown. It comes quite frequent. This is a plus.

The Metrorail was very useful for my needs. It is not an extensive public transportation system like the NYC subway, but is good if you are going to be near the downtown. It came at very frequent intervals and only costs $1.25 a ride. I took it to Hermann Park and had no problems at all figuring out the map. Coupled with their bus system, you can reach most places in Houston pretty easily.

Okay, so half the reason I was so excited about October's Yelp Event was that we got to ride the Metro Rail/Light Rail (the other half was the fabulous company, of course). It did not disappoint. After our first bar, we walked a mere block to our station, each of us paid the whopping $2 fee for round trip and go on board. It was fast, clean, efficient. There was plenty of room to sit, but what's the fun in that?! Yes, it can be a bit confusing if you're driving and you don't notice you're on the tracks (admit it, you've almost driven on it a few times), but it just makes sense to have the Light Rail down there. I do wish it was a bit longer and the parking was easier if you're not at one of the major hubs. Can I just emphasize again how clean this was? I was expecting some grimy, nasty thing with shady people and me being afraid to touch anything for fear of Hepatitis. This place was spotless and put my car to shame. I wish I had more excuses to go downtown and use the Light Rail, but as they expand the line, I'm sure I'll start using it more.

It's not perfect, but compared to the other public transportation in Houston, it gets 5 stars from me. I live close to a station and I take it Downtown and to the Medical Center / Rice all the time. It's always on time (unlike the busses), runs frequently, and the fares are more than fair. I am really looking forward to the expansion (4 more light rail lines by 2012 including an Uptown line, and a line along Richmond). The only downside is a few major streets it crosses where it sometimes has to wait for traffic. I agree with Groovehouse that they should sync the lights better so the train always gets a green. That isn't a big enough deal for it to lose a star though.

And this service is like ride share app, where they will pick you at the door and drop you off at the door. If you have a wheeler or in wheeler, no problems, you will get you in the vehicle safely and secure you safely. You have to qualify for the service and you have to go through an interview at the main building in downtown. I really appreciation the Metro Lift as it let me be independent on going to places in Houston safely and not relying on family or friends all the time. The downtown main building is also the Downtown Transit Center. You can also buy your Metro Lift paper ticket here and get a new ID here. Also getting my lost item back was painless and easy.

But it's still a 4 star service, and when my car is out of action I'm very grateful for it. I wrote 2 different reviews for this, so here's the longer other one. Respect my transit authority! I know some would say I would be better off riding the Metrosexual Transit Authority, but I felt comfortable on this bus service too. Not literally comfortable though, because holy lack of suspension, batman. I've had a few bad experiences since the first time I thought Houston buses deserve a 5 star rating, but I'm still very grateful for them every time my car isn't working. Like I said before: Still one of the better bus services in the country. I've ridden NYC, LA, DC, Boston, Miami, and a ton more I can't even think of, and Houston is up there with my favourites. It's not as cheap as I think it should be, but then most bus services in major cities aren't. One of the best features of the Houston Metro is the awesome train that runs from the University area to downtown and if they could expand that to other parts of the city it'd be even better. Also Houston could use a really extensive subway system to ease the loads on its overstuffed highways. Most of the drivers are super friendly (and hit on my friend a lot, but then her pink hair is part of it), most of the buses are on time, and they send text updates to tell you when the bus is going to be along. I did have a couple of very aggressive bus drivers lately, but that's to be expected.

The buses are torn up, passengers are rude and there is always a fowl stench emitting from someone. I've been passed by drivers waiting at a stop, harassed by drunks and even had to change busses once because somebody puked all over the place. The sound inside this is noise pollution. There is a loud blaring speaker belting out a constant loop of "82 Westheimer, Please have your Q card as you enter the bus. Thank you for riding Metro" Then it goes in Spanish and repeats again. I know I'm on the fucking 82, you don't have to repeat it 30 million times. Between that, the rattling, windows and the loud mouth thugs sitting in back, the noise is unbearable. The schedules are always fucked up and sometimes you'll wait 30 minutes for a supposed 10 min interval bus followed by 3 or 4 busses minutes apart. For the most part this bus gets you were you need to go but if time allows take the 25 instead.
