I have mixed feelings about METRORail. I've been riding the rail for years to and from the Medical Center and NRG for Rodeo Houston and events. The fare is only $1.25 each way and it certainly beats having to pay for parking in these congested areas, however the ride isn't always pleasant. Homeless people continue to use the train, spread out on the benches and hang out to take advantage of the air conditioned cars among the hot Houston summers. Over the past year or so I have noticed that there are more fare inspectors, outfitted in neon yellow shirts, however these hasn't proven to be effective in reducing the homeless presence. Over the years I have seen people smoking on the training, sleeping, and even masturbating....yikes. read more

This actually deserves 0 stars, however that is not an option. As residents' of Houston who rely on Metro for transportation, we are concerned about the safety of our daily commutes on the MetroRail. We have to UNFORTUNATELY transfer from the Metro Park-n-Rides to the MetroRail to get into the Medical Center which has become dangerous and increasingly unsafe. The majority about 90% have to use the MetroRail en route to the Medical Center. This means that a large portion of Houston's Workforce is at risk every day due to inadequate transportation options. We want Metro to have more Park-n-Rides go directly into the Medical Center without having to transfer to the MetroRail, just like the Woodlands, Conroe, and Katy does. This will ensure safer travels for commuters. MetroRail also DOES NOT take action addressing safety ANY CONCERNS from it's PAYING passengers! Several people including myself have addressed NUMEROUS times incidents such as harassment, verbal assult, physicial assult, fighting, theft, stalking, threats of violence, transients sleeping on trains, panhandling, etc without any protection or care or concern from Metro Police. Passenger's complain to the drivers of the train and they ignore us, they really don't care. The paying customers are the ones that constantly get harrassed going to and form work, it has become a nightmare. Metro harass paying customers while transients ride free all day long and keep constant madness! The MetroRail is dirty, nasty, and always has foul orders of urine and feces smell. On any given day you will see transients eating, sleeping, drinking, or smoking weed on the train, and do you think they get put off?? NO! Everyone turns a blind eye! Wheeler Ave, Downtown, Main Station are the absolute worst!! read more

I had a good opportunity to experience Houston's METRORail this weekend, riding from downtown to the Museum District and then again to/from Minute Maid Park. For $1.25, I'd say that it's fantastic. Trains seemed to run often enough to fit my needs, they were clean and they were speedy. Quiet (compared to the steel on wheels of Boston and New York) and modern (compared to London or Paris), the trains don't go all that far but they go far enough to allow a tourist like me to forsake a car rental and parking for getting around. Very simple system which operates on a proof-of-purchase system. You will need to keep your ticket handy as more than half of my rides had a fare inspector on board. You get to ride for a solid four hours for that buck and a quarter. Awesome! read more

We rode the Red Line downtown today. We encountered fare inspectors, and they were polite to us as they checked our tickets. We assumed that the homeless people without tickets would be asked to step off the train. However, the fare inspectors specifically avoided them. One of these passengers was passed out on a long row of seats. Very disappointing that Metro staff refuse to do their job and make public transit in Houston a less horrible experience! read more

Some people say that when I'm in Houston (or Los Angeles), I go off the rails, well this review is proof that I do not. The trains in Houston are as good as any local train I've ever ridden, or let people ride on me, so to speak. They're a little slow (but then this is the south), however they will zip you right through the awful traffic from the Museum District, to Midtown, to Downtown, faster than you can say wow, Houston is a very diverse place with some spectacular looking people. I'll be riding this train a lot more when I'm back in Houston, so to speak. read more

METRORail, I love you. You make going to Texan games and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo concerts so much easier. Park anywhere in town (we usually do Midtown), and just for a $1.25 we get a quick trip to the MedCenter ... all with a scenic route through the Museum District. The upside is on game days and the Rodeo, the trip back is free! That certainly beats parking for 10-20 bucks at the rodeo and dealing with the horrible traffic to just get out of the lot. Reminder, no food or drink allowed on the train. You'll actually get a ticket. We had some roadies, but thankfully the "cop" let us off with a warning. Phew. I wish it operated past, what is it?, midnight/1am? And I'm looking forward to the expansion of METRORail all across town. read more

Note that if you are getting on at San Jacinto this train is heading downtown. If you get on at Fannin street then its going out of downtown. It comes quite frequent. This is a plus. read more

Okay, so half the reason I was so excited about October's Yelp Event was that we got to ride the Metro Rail/Light Rail (the other half was the fabulous company, of course). It did not disappoint. After our first bar, we walked a mere block to our station, each of us paid the whopping $2 fee for round trip and go on board. It was fast, clean, efficient. There was plenty of room to sit, but what's the fun in that?! Yes, it can be a bit confusing if you're driving and you don't notice you're on the tracks (admit it, you've almost driven on it a few times), but it just makes sense to have the Light Rail down there. I do wish it was a bit longer and the parking was easier if you're not at one of the major hubs. Can I just emphasize again how clean this was? I was expecting some grimy, nasty thing with shady people and me being afraid to touch anything for fear of Hepatitis. This place was spotless and put my car to shame. I wish I had more excuses to go downtown and use the Light Rail, but as they expand the line, I'm sure I'll start using it more. read more

It's not perfect, but compared to the other public transportation in Houston, it gets 5 stars from me. I live close to a station and I take it Downtown and to the Medical Center / Rice all the time. It's always on time (unlike the busses), runs frequently, and the fares are more than fair. I am really looking forward to the expansion (4 more light rail lines by 2012 including an Uptown line, and a line along Richmond). The only downside is a few major streets it crosses where it sometimes has to wait for traffic. I agree with Groovehouse that they should sync the lights better so the train always gets a green. That isn't a big enough deal for it to lose a star though. read more

I probably only ride the metro rail once a year... And that's for the rodeo. I dislike traffic and long lines. If you're leaving the rodeo towards closing hours or after a concert...the line to go home is very long for north bound. Since we parked in the med center, when exiting the rodeo, our route is north bound. We took a risk and rode the South Bound..which is a shorter line. It goes towards SAMs club..and it comes back to pick up the North bound folks..Scpre!! We avoided the line, & had seats to be in..just a warning..when you're back to pick up the North bound folks.its a madhouse..everyone's like a pack of sardines in there. We only paid $1.25 when we first took the rail to the rodeo. I guess it's free on your way back..due to the crazy line of ppl to get on. I can't really say I patronize the METRORail all that often as I'm huge butt head of a polluter and I drive my gas guzzler (okay, it's a Camry, but anyway, I'm treacherous!) ALONE, everywhere. But no, I really have no practical need for the METRORail unless I'm attending some Reliant Stadium event and everyone in my party twitches at the mere notion of battling the parking situation there, which I can't say happens all that often. In terms of commuting from downtown or Midtown to the Reliant - bless you METRORail. Admittedly you get crazy crowded on the days I actually need you, but so far, so good. I haven't observed any altercations or overt rudeness, although every so often, there is some ridiculous person blaring music from his cell phone - OMG, so cool bro! It runs from University of Houston Downtown to one stop past the Reliant Stadium - pretty good coverage. There's a couple of inexpensive lots to safely park your car, or you can do what I do - park near Montrose for free (but please do observe the pesky "no parking" signs and their evil hours) and walk to the METRORail. Exercise, kids! All ten minutes of it. It's $1.25 for a one way ticket, which most people do not seem to actually purchase but METRORail doesn't seem much to mind (as I'm assuming our tax dollars subsidize the majority of the operations costs). All in all, pretty darn convenient and fairly efficient. I can only dream of a day wherein Houston has a fully integrated citywide mass transit system (yeah, I know . . . keep dreaming). read more

If it wasn't for the fact the nation's fourth-largest city only had ONE operational light rail line, I'd give them the full 5 stars. Having said that, the Main Line (Red Line) works great! $1.25 will get you a 4-hour pass on the clean and roomy train cars. They do run in mixed traffic, so you may have some waits. But I got from the Museum District to Downtown in like 7 minutes or something. Wasn't long at all. I liked that I saw a very diverse group of people taking the train. It's good to see public transit being used. I only took it on a Sunday afternoon for shits and grins, and it was pretty well stocked. I bet it's jam-packed on a weekday rush hour. All the stations have plenty of seating as well, and covers to protect you from the sun and rain. Very good system, in my opinion. Now just get the Green and Purple Lines up already! read more

Ah, MetroRail! You are my Ferrari as well as my super stretch limo :) When I first moved to Houston they were about 6-8 months away from completing construction on the first segment of the line. I waited excitedly for the start of service. That wasn't too long ago and look how much has been added already. I have no issue with the regular Metro buses, but this is so superior to me. Service is 100% on time as scheduled (save a few very unfortunate incidents). Inside it is normally clean and almost always have seating available. read more

I live in the Heights and drive 'n park to midtown to catch the train. No more waiting on ridiculously long and random red lights. No more paying an exorbitant amount for downtown parking. The light rail's one way pass is $1.25. I would recommend getting a re-loadable Q-Card. For every 50 trips you get 5 trips for free! Stolen and lost card balances are replaced free of charge. The trains come every 5 minutes during peak hours, so you are never waiting long. This is very important during the hot humid horrible Houston weather. Cleanness is also rated a 5 stars relative to public transportation. Houston is one of the most polluted city in the good ol' US of A. We need more public transportation systems like this. I've ridden the metro rail almost every weekday for the last year and a half and love it. There are so many things wonderful about this system that I must use list form: Metro Rail is... 1) Clean, both for the environment and, in general, inside the cars too. 2) Convenient, no driving required! Just grab a seat and read on your way to your destination 3) Consistent, if you miss the train during a week day, another train will be along in 6 minutes 4) Cheap - $2 a day round trip beats driving or paying for parking, whether your work downtown or in the Medical center, parking both places is expensive 5) a great way to get to entertainment - you can find all sorts of places within walking distance of the metro rail: the zoo, science museum, museum of fine art, Rice University, Theater District, Downtown, Reliant Stadium. The downsides: 1) While there are a lot of places on the rail line, the rail doesn't cover much ground. If you want to go elsewhere in Houston you have to either just drive there yourself or take a bus to where you need to go 3) Really only useful if you either live on the rail line or use the park and ride. 2) If the train breaks down, hope for a swift death, they usually don't have enough buses to spare in order to get you to your destination. Granted, the train hardly ever breaks down, I've been on it only once where it was a huge mess and a handful of times when drivers were stupid and caused the train to be delayed for about 30 minutes. Now there are some odd people on the train, people with horrible B.O., people who you would swear just broke out of a mental institution, but they are mostly harmless. Just ignore them and choose another seat or, if you feel brave, chat them up to see what crazy stories you can tell your friends about. I've talked to some amazing people on the train, and yes, some not so amazing, but you find people on both ends of the spectrum just about everywhere. Besides, most of the people who ride the train are Medical Center and Downtown workers. As a side note I'd say the most memorable moment I've had riding the train is getting hit on by a guy singing "My Humps" by Fergy. I wasn't amused, but it took the top spot for most memorable from the guy who looks almost exactly like Bill Murray getting harassed because someone though he actually was Bill Murray. read more

WE NEED MORE RAIL~! I extremely enjoy the light rail because it's affordable, it fights through traffic, it is reliable during the weekdays, I avoid parking costs/fee, it drops me off right in front of my school, and it's free for the Texans' games. Now I don't rely just solely on the light rail, I do a hybrid of rail and bus when I use the light rail. The cool thing is that you don't pay twice if you have a Q card because it has free transfers. I will be even more happy when there is rail all over the city * one day....ONE day...* I've seen it get really packed during the morning rush around the TMC, so just FYI. read more

I ride METRO Rail nigh-on seven days a week, and have done so since the weekend it opened in January 2004. It was the weekend of the end of a huge exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts (from the Museum of Modern Art in NYC), and the trains were literally packed so full people could not get on. Amazing. I have not seen crowds like that on the trains since. The trains themselves are comfortable, but the fact that it is not an elevated system bothers me. Who ever heard of a train that stops for a red light!? Oh wait, I can't go just yet - some car is making an illegal left turn in front of the train - idiot. An elevated rail system would have made things a lot uglier (unless the right people were to be brought in for aesthetics), but it would cut the time from one end of the line (just south of the Astrodome) to the other (University of Houston, Downtown) by about a third or more. Yeah, one sees a lot of interesting people on the train. I'm reminded of all the pretty ladies I saw in their rodeo attire going to the show. lol I also think a lot of folks ride it who would otherwise not ride the bus. In this town, I think trains are more culturally and socially acceptable. Be warned: Do NOT forget to buy your ticket from the kiosks, and Lord help you if the kiosks are out of service (which happens a little too often) and the METRO police sweep the trains for valid fare items. The METRO police sweeps are very effective. Almost everyone has their fare items on them, and this has eliminated the need for bothersome turnstiles. As for convenience, Fayza and Cory O. are absolutely correct: unless you live and/or work along the train route, it's really not useful for anything else, though it has made getting about Downtown and the Med Center, etc. a lot easier. Going to a Texans game, an event at Reliant Center, the HLSR? Then I would highly advise taking the train. For $1.25 it sure beats the $10-$20 parking fee you'll face at Reliant. And on game days the ride back to your car is free! You can use your debit card at the ticket kiosk and purchasing them is super easy. Put in your card, select how many you need and push the button. Boom...wait a couple minutes and get on the train. The stop at Hermann Park is a bit of a walk across Main. But honestly, it's not much further than you'd walk if you drove around an hour trying to locate a parking spot in their tiny parking lots. It was clean and quick and comfy. No food or drink on the train. The train stops were clean as well and we had no trouble hopping on and off whenever we wanted. I rarely have reason to ride the train as it doesn't really go to places daily that I frequent. But if it ran by my house or to my job I'd ride this thing every day! The few times I have ridden it it's been going South from the Museum District. But I'd love to use it through downtown where parking is IMPOSSIBLE. You can take your bike on it at certain times. On weekdays, bikes are allowed from 4:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and after 6 p.m. two bikes per rail car are permitted. On weekends, bikes are allowed any time, but limited to two bikes per rail car. The Metro website has a pdf of suggested available parking along the routes to insure your car's safety. Why not 5 stars since I like the train? Well, it is really limited on where it goes. The average Houstonian goes to Reliant or the Med Center or the zoo maybe 2 or 3 times a year. And since I am among that group of "average Houstonians" it doesn't really make my daily life easier. But I am glad it's there when I need it. read more

I love the Light Rail. I just wish it was more than just a one-trick pony with its one line. I am a big advocate for public transport, and I have to say that this is a fantastic first step for Houston to get past just bus lines. I wish those stupid people who live on Richmond who are whining about the potential Richmond Rd light rail would shut their pie holes. Too harsh you say? Well... have you ever ridden down Richmond? It is a dreadful road, the thing has potholes all over it and it is in dire need of an update. Maybe the people have a point... but the wrong point... the whole street would have to be fixed to allow the train to run smoothly, and that might cost the city a lot in repairs prior to the actual construction. Whatever, I am rambling... For now, use the light rail as much as possible. $2 per day round trip is spectacular, especially considering a lot of people ride it for free... What can you say about Houston's METRO Rail. Houstonians should be excited - we actually have a fully functioning public transportation system. Unfortunately, if you've been to any other major city (remember, Houston is #4 in the US), you'd realize that METRO Rail is pretty much a joke. I'm glad to hear that the city leaders want to expand the rail, I am dismayed at the "not in my backyard" reaction by the citizenry. Everyone loves the rail, but nobody wants it in front of their home or business. The line as it is now is a dollar each way as far as you want to take it. This payment is basically on the honor system and I've never been asked to show proof of payment, though I did see some METRO police at one stop that may have been checking. Since the honor system is easily abused, the rail has become a homeless transportation system. And why not, its free, its air conditioned, and it can take you 9 miles away from your troubles. Maybe the city wanted the rail to be more visible, maybe they are cheap, whatever the reason, they decided to install the rail at grade with the roads. This means that your trip from beginning to end takes approx 45 minutes (for 9 miles) because the train STOPS at the traffic lights! It also means that Houston drivers had to get used to sharing the road with a train, resulting in many accidents. Why you can still drive down Main Street (along which the rail is installed for a good length) is a mystery. The train screws up the lights so much its almost impossible to drive without stopping at each one. I do enjoy having the rail to ride short distances to and from downtown and have used it a few times to go from downtown to the Reliant Park area. Its kind of cool to see such a broad cross section of the community using it and it does serve as a magnet for travelling. If the city leaders and the people living in Houston could ever agree and actually build a fully functional rail system that could be used to get around town, well we'd at least be closer to getting on par with some of the other big cities. read more

this is a great easy system for getting to events downtown. i use this system when i go to astros games or dynamo games to prevent drunk driving. it's the honor system. you should purchase a ticket before getting on using a self checkout machine, but not everyone does it. this results in crazy homeless people riding it with you. something's they urinate on the train and get in fights with each other. ill keep using this system until one of them gets in a fight with me. haha. i also wouldn't recommend to bring kids on this. read more

It's a good form of transportation if you are headed to a Texans game, the rodeo, or the Houston Zoo. I have enjoyed this train for years to get you to areas in the downtown Houston area like baseball and football games. The train used to go from UH Downtown to the NRG Stadium area, which is close to 10 miles that the train ran. They recently expanded the rail line so that now it goes down near 610 and the Northline HCC area. It's now good for those people to get to the area without having to make a stop downtown. The expansion has made it more efficient. It also runs through the medical center, the zoo, and the museum district. If tourists wanted to take a trip to the museum, I would highly recommend them taking this form of transportation if they were downtown. It's really nice to get to work or to other locations from wherever you live without the Houston traffic. It can get a little crowded if everyone is in a rush to get to and from places, but this train system is going to get you into Houston or right outside of the city. It runs till about 1 AM and it is very useful to Houstonians getting to and from work with no hassle. If you're looking to get somewhere outside Houston or downtown, take this rail way, and it'll be a fast and simple form of transportation. read more

If you are staying in the downtown area of Houston, it isn't entirely difficult to get around without your own car. There are taxis every few blocks, buses, and the METRORail within reach. I had a car but my friends wanted to take public transportation. What could have been a 5 minute ride down the street turned into a 20 minute trip. With an open mind I embraced METRORail and did my part to spare the air that day. The METRORail costs $1.25 each way and is good for 2 hours as long as you hold on to your ticket. There is an honor system to the rail but please do buy a ticket from the kiosk. On our ride from the Medical Center to the Museum of Fine Arts, two cops hopped on and checked to make sure everyone had a ticket. The citation for not having a ticket is $75. We found out from the locals that it is mostly students who try to ride for free. Nonetheless, the ride was pleasant and a convenient way to travel to the nearby sites. The METRORail is similar to the T in Boston and Lightrail in NJ. It's clean and runs approximately every 12 minutes on the weekend. It wasn't too crowded and we were able to sit on both trips. The METRORail is a nice option, but seriously... when you have your own car and parking is only $3... which mode of transportation would you prefer? read more

I take this almost daily to work. I must say the trains run almost the same time everyday. Every once in awhile it's late but by only a few minutes. It usually isn't too busy and even if it is there is plenty of standing room. It loses a star because it's not always clean. I have seem times when the chairs are covered in dirt and the floors littered with trash. But this is a step in the right direction for public transportation in houston. read more

A great addition to our city transportation, but I do wish metro police would enforce the "ticket to ride" aspect a bit more. It's great for the environment and has become an integral part of my daily work commute, so I will be forever grateful for the city realizing it's dire need for more efficient transportation through bustling corridors of the city. I'm looking forward to the newest expansions that will be coming in the next couple of years. My hope is that it will cut down on inner city traffic during sporting events and make the highways surrounding the downtown area more feasible for driving after hours and on weekends. This was my first time riding the train and I absolutely loved it!! I hope they can speed up all of their planned rail lines. It was very clean and seems well maintained. We were going to the Grand Prix event at Reliant Arena and this made life so much easier!!! I didn't want to battle all the parking lots and having to pay. The pay station was very easy to use and finding the landing wasn't hard either. We parked at a friends house and walked over. I need to find more events to go to so that I can use the rail :), wish it came by my house! read more

FREE RIDES! Since I grew up in both the NYC and Boston areas I'm used to riding the train. I'm glad Houston has the rail system and it's pretty good but there are some major problems. First, as stated above, are the free rides. Don't get me wrong I've done it more than once but it seems stupid to have the "honor system" for riding the trains. Sure they now have random checks by Metro Cops but that just seems like a waste of the cops' time. They should look into fixing this. Another problem is currently there is only one line. Granted I live near it and it can take me to downtown and such but they need to expand to be effective. I know they are adding three more lines but they all don't connect to each other. One new line is all by it's self. That spells fail to me. The rail system is nice but they can improve on it. I would give it 2 out of 5 but since I did live near it and use it, it gets a 3. read more

I really wish S.A. would adopt this as an alternative transportation. But it just seems that when it comes to this topic, most people are bassackwords on it. Yeah, so in creating it, it'll disrupt the businesses downtown but geez people, it wouldn't last forever. And with gas prices being the way they are, this might be a better alternative. I'm giving the rail 5 stars not because it's perfect but because we need to show as much support as possible so they'll hurry up and expand it! I live right next to the downtown stop so it's really useful when I want to go to museums or feel too lazy to walk home when I'm downtown. On 14 OCT 20 last bus running at 8:30pm on knight Rd. Going Northbound the the 60 north decides to skip that part of its route. Causing me to walk a mile. This is my first time on the metro rail and a great alternative for getting to the rodeo. I wasn't too excited about driving to the other side of town as i live about 10 minutes from the Fulton stop. Parking was free and hassle free! So far all is well and i will definitely do this again next year. read more

I've lived near the Metrorail for a long time, but I've never used it! I did this weekend, as an alternative to finding parking at the ballet. It worked great! It was quick, and so cheap ($1 per ride, and your ticket stays good for hours). A great way to avoid parking nightmares. And you get a built-in designated driver (the conductor!) :P read more
