Looked for a mexican place while I was in town for a volunteer event. Walked in on Saturday about 6:30. Only one other person in the restaurant. 10 minutes later, the place filled up nicely with patrons. You know it's authentic when there is a soccer (futbol) game on the only tv. It was NWSL too which was a nice bonus. The place has an old school leather booths feel too it. Waitress was attentive and took my drink order immediately. We went through the list of tequilas. My my the upcharge for Patron was steep. Went with a more reasonable option in ordering the margarita. Starting feeling the tequila on the uber back to the hotel. Upon recommendation, I ordered the half/half chicken/steak. Portion size was nice. I had the corn tortillas. Veggies tasted fresh. refried beans and gauc was nice. Soup awesome. Servers awesome. Prices ...I bit high. But the cheese quesadillas, no sir. Made with as little effort as possible with as little ingredients as possible. D- At least throw some lettuce and a couple sliced jalepenos in the box with some sour cream or even some pico. Nope, nothing. Just a couple nibbles of chicken folder over in ONE tortilla. Bummer. So the hotel and a local both recommended this place so definitely had high hopes. But unfortunately that was short lived. It was pretty empty for dinner but that was ok as we were hungry and figured that would work in our favor as the food would come out quickly which it did. The chips and salsa were a good start which normally is at a Mexican restaurant. I ordered the chimichanga (baked). Tried to be a little healthy and didn't get it fried. Unfortunately it was awful. The meat inside it was super burnt. Looked like leftover meat that they stuffed in a burrito. I expected the cheese sauce to cover the entire burrito which it didn't just some of the two little burritos that were provided. The beans were OK. It's kind of hard to mess up on refried beans. I got the carnitas and a chili relleno. The carnitas are supposed to come in some special house made sauce. There was nothing but dried out pieces of pork and grilled onions. The chili relleno was old and greasy. Not freshly made. Salsa tasted like it came from a jar. read more

Good food, huge menu. I tried the full order of pupusas (choice of 3). I chose one of each available flavor (chicken, bean, cheese). The best way to describe pupusa -- it's a stuffed masa pancake. Masa dough is the soft, fluffy corn filling that's in tamales. A pupusa is a naked, flat, grilled tamale basically. :) They are topped with mild, shredded warm cabbage, carrot, onion relish which was delish! The cheese pupusa was my fav. This place was a sad experience. Came into town to pick up kid after band camp. At first I was expecting delicious Guatemalan food but it turned out to be terrible wannabe Mexican Food. For those with prison food experience, this place will bring you flashbacks. Picture cafeteria food with taco seasoning. I'm just passing by this place next time. For management, please spend time in the kitchen and taste the food before serving. Say no to guacamole from a can, or canned beans or microwaved tortillas. We had the burrito deluxe, fajitas and pollo dorado. The burrito is a taco bell burrito fail. Fajitas were rubbery with mystery veggies and the chicken would be an embarrassment for Guatemalan chefs. Pretty average run of the mill Mexican place. It's literally an old Hardee's so not much for ambiance but inside looks okay. Food is a little aggressively salted for me. Burrito was okay but couldn't finish it. Friend said chicken quesadilla was pretty average- probably lower scale for the area. Salsa was the star of the meal. To set the stage this was a mid afternoon dine in for a table of 8. Seating was prompt as there were maybe 3 other tables with patrons. Drink order was taken, nice to see drink both hard and soft from Mexico. Unfortunately a a 32 ounce Bud Light draft was flat and seemed a bit stale according to the connoisseurs. I had a bottled beer. Took a good ten minutes later to get the food order placed, took another 10-15 minutes to get a drink refill. Food arrived sporadically to the table with one meal being completely wrong. It was replaced. In general the food was good, nothing outstanding or special. Last night I go to my favorite Mexican place in Normal (I'm only here for 40 days and have been to four Mexican restaurants) and, as I pull in, I notice what appears to be a college sports bus unloading. I am pretty sure I'll be eating somewhere else but it was "Taco Tuesday" and my heart was set. I enter and the team is just being seated. I catch the hostess/waitress/family member's eye and she heads over with a smile and a "Welcome back Hon!" I ask how long it will take to get food because of the team. She suggests that if I order before them all will be well . . .otherwise an hour . . . And then she asks if I want to place an order for my usual right then. {I have been there only once previously} I answer in the positive and she tells me to go to my usual table. {Did I mention I've only been there once?} And so I finished most of my meal before the team had their orders in. I always like checking out the new restaurants in town but I try to stay away for the first week or so. They drop of complimentary chips and salsa and I thought the salsa was pretty good, we got an order of queso and it was also pretty good. To be honest, it tastes exactly like the queso at other restaurants in town so I have a feeling it comes from the same vendor. It was certainly reasonably priced, I just was hoping for a little differentiation from the other Mexican restaurants locally. I had the chicken fajitas, they were good. I didn't have to wait too long so they came out nice and hot (not too quickly that it was suspicious, which is also very nice). My only real complaint was that the rice was pretty bland, I asked my friend what they thought of the rice and agreed. It was not at the same level as the rest of our meal. Rice is generally pretty easy to overlook, if it looks right sometimes they may not catch it. I just put a little hot sauce (of which the selection is generous, seriously appreciated) and all was well. For what I paid I was happy with my meal and the rice isn't a deal breaker, I just hope it's sorted out. I will certainly be returning. read more

Wow!! I'm in love with this place. It was a first visit but I will definitely be back. This place has Mexican & Guatemalan style food. The menu is overwhelming as there are many options a to consider and LOTS if vegetarian choices!! I stopped on a very hot day (95 degrees with high humidity). I ordered through the drive thru and was asked to wait for my order to brought out. Only a few minutes and the man was RUNNING (literally) my order out to my car. What lovely service!! When I got to enjoy my delux burritos, my taste buds had a BIG party. The chicken was amazing and everything was well seasoned with flavor!! If you have the chance give Mexa-Maya Maya a try. The food here is fine. It's nothing special and is on par with your average Mexican restaurant. However, the restaurant is rather dirty. There was a massive centipede crawling all around us while we were trying to eat. Also, the prices on the menu are not the prices they actually charge. There is a very small label that says this on the front of the menu, but come one. Who really reads the front of the menu? The server also neglected to tell us about this, so I ended up spending more than I had planned on. Overall, pretty disappointed with this establishment. read more
