I stopped in town for a quick bite to eat. This is a smaller mercado than I'm used to. They have a very distinct crowd they cater too. So limited items but your staples definitely are there. A small produce section. You're able to make calls to your home land and they have a small clothing section. Now let's get to the restaurant side. They have plenty of seating for dining in. They serve beer that you can eat with your meal. The service is neutral. Place your order at the window. The topping are a-la carte, so you get them yourself. Got me that's perfect because I always order extra cilantro and they never put enough. My chicken tacos were phenomenal. I also had an asada which was good too but the chicken was just way better. The produce is fresh with a surprising variety It's wonderful to see a building that's been part of Estill's landscape for so long, repurposed while maintaining the original structure. If I heard Aiken, South Carolina and good Mexican food in the same sentence I would not understand the comparability until I bit into my first street taco from Mexicali. My friend's parents of all people, raved about this place being the best in Aiken and we were right down the block so..taste test tally ho. Walk into the store and at first glance you might say this store looks way to small to be a restaurant, but follow the aroma to the back and it opens up to a quaint dining room with a couple of seating booths and table seating spread out. We had a Mango soda, couple of chicken and chorizo tacos with the complimentary refried beans and rice. To top it off the tomatillo verde sauce was tangy and the pico had a nice hot kick to the taste. If you are looking for some authentic spices or Mexican candy look no further. Total dive. If you're not Hispanic you'll be as lost as we were walking in. There's no signage, and no English. We meandered around until we found the restaurant in the back of this Mexican grocery store. You order at the counter & need to be able to read Spanish to interpret the menu. Fortunately I can. The cook isn't bilingual either. The food is decent but IMO doesn't rival 3 Caminos. It is however authentic so if you're craving chips & salsa this isn't your place. There was an odd amount of onion peel in my dish. The mango soda is delicious. The portion was huge and the price was fair. Beware of the red sauce! Aiken folks! Don't sleep on Mexicali. Yes, it's beside a "biker bar". Yes, it looks like a Mexican grocery store from the outside. Yes, it looks like a place where the owners don't serve outsiders. Yes, it's the best CaliMexican in Aiken. The first time I walked in I almost turned around. The wonderful smell of the food in the back of the store kept me there though. The establishment is a store as well as a restaurant. If you're there for the food, walk straight to the back where you will see a few booths and tables and the order counter filled with meat for purchase. They have a written menu in Spanish on a white board and some picture posted with numbers underneath for the Spanish language challenged. The order numbers are a bit off, but I always get the Number 1 with chicken. Two chicken tacos with re fried beans and rice. There is always a generous helping of chicken. The chicken is seasoned and juicy. The beans are always warm and creamy and pair great with the seasoned rice. By the way, all of this is about $6. Awesomesauce! Notes for visiting. If eating in, you want to go to the condiments bar with your plate. You have choices of pico, peppers, several sauces, cilantro, and limes. Hot sauce is on the table if that's overwhelming. Grab a soda from the fridge in the front, sit in a booth, watch the soccer match that's on t.v. in Spanish, and enjoy your lunch or dinner. You pay at the counter on your way out. I've only ever seen two people working at Mexicali. A man and a woman. They are both very nice and laugh at me when I attempt to speak Spanish. Never fear, they speak English too. read more

My boyfriend and I were trying to find a legit Mexican place here in Aiken, and we were so lucky in finding this place! If you're looking for authentic Mexican, this certainly the place. The employees here are really nice as well and it's pretty cheap (about $2 a taco). It's an old building that doesn't have the nicest seating area, but that's not something I particularly care about. As far as the taste of the food is concerned, my boyfriend and I enjoyed eating the al pastor and carnitas tacos. There were toppings at bar that you could choose from as well, including things like cilantro, onion, and two different types of salsa. We also bought some horchata mix that we made at home ourselves since it was late at night and they were out of their own mixture. We went shopping for a few candies there as well and my boyfriend was able to find the candy he was searching for that he remembered from his days in California. I am on the search for the best authentic place for Mexican tacos (cilantro and onions), and my journey brought me here to another Mexican grocery store. These places are the best for authentic Mexican food. I got a carnitas and an al pastor taco. The tortilla shells were warm and tasty. The carnitas was tender and well seasoned. The al pastor taco was good too, but not as good as the carnitas. I got a little ramekin of red salsa and one of green. The red salsa was hot just like I like it. The tacos were just $2 a piece. We were a little skeptical of this place because we assumed it was just a grocery store. Don't get me wrong, it is a grocery store but it also has a deli counter to order food. Don't be put off by the shady look of the place, either. The food was actually really top notch. We got a couple tacos a piece with chicken and carnitas. They give you a couple dishes of salsa on the side. One of the has a little heat to it that I pleasantly surprised by. We were mad when chipotle closed, but now we are even more mad that this place was right next door all along and we'd never gone! My recommendation? Get three tacos. I pulled an amateur move and settled on two, rookie mistake. Oh, and on your way up to order, be sure to grab a couple sodas from the front! Overall, great food in a weird location where you'll probably feel a little out of place, but who cares. Give it a try and you'll love it. read more

Nicely seasoned tacos, but a bit on the dry side. There is a self serve bar for getting salsa, onions, cilantto, etc. Three heat level choices of salsa. Don't get the hottest unless you like muy picante! Really nice hot sauce, but it will leave you burning for a while. If you like horchata, get a can from the cooler. The stuff they make behind the counter tasted like it comes from a powder packet. Overall, this is a good place to get your Mexican yums on, but a drive to Augusta will give you better options for slightly better fair. read more

This is a grocery store and a taqueria, not the best seating arrangement in the world. Had chicken fajitas that were out of this world good with tortillas de mais, very authentic fresh mexican food. Also has self service bar with pica de gallo, lime, onion, cilantro, and several different types of hot sauce and one avocado spicy sauce. Everything so fresh and tasty especially like all the authentic mexican condiments . Staff very friendly as well, definitely my new favorite authentic mexican rest in the area will definitely repeat probably on my next day off read more

Several years ago, while visiting from California I had a strong craving for some authentic Mexican food. I drove by and on a hunch, stopped in. Many would walk right back out, based on first impressions; however, walk past those impressions (the dingy ambiance, the non-English photo menu) and you'll find some really amazing food in the true taqueria style.
