Okay, I love the place! The place is not a instagrammy type of place, it's not pretty. But the food is delicious, and exactly what I needed to more than satisfy my cravings of what I was in the mood for. Initially, it was carne asada, but then I saw the "Fajitas a la Jalisciense", and it had steak, chicken and shrimp, all for a good price. Came with rice and beans, and 4 tortillas. The taste felt authentic, not too salty, not too foodie, but just real. good. I love that the server greeted me with a smile, but also 5 bowls of toppings (cucumber, lime, pickled onions, green sauce, and red sauce) and they pair with just about anything!! I just moved from CA and this place would have been my top choice here - but lucky for me it's not that far in North Augusta. The beans are amazing, and I think beans are the best measure of a Mexican restaurant. It takes a lot of love and care to make them good and these are out of this world. Salsas we're also top notch. What I loved the most was that they could make any of the tacos, tortas, gorditas, etc. with veggies instead of meat. And the veggies are really good, not just some sad afterthought but truly delicious and made with love. We ordered dairy free and even without cheese and crema these tacos were bursting with flavor. They get busy on weekends at lunchtime but there's a really nice park with picnic tables close by, so if you're in a hurry or have impatient kids call in a to go order and enjoy it outside. read more

Went here because the reviews said the food was very good. It is a small establishment and the 4 of us were seated near a TV that was playing quite loud. I ordered the burrito, a friend ordered tacos, my wife ordered sopes, and our friend's wife ordered something else, I don't remember what. All I can say is the food was sustenance but certainly nothing special. Mine lacked taste and had a small helping of rice. My wife's meal was also lacking flavor. As a matter of fact, all four of us felt our meals were just blah. As we were leaving, both my wife and I needed to use the bathrooms. The men's room had no toilet seat and my wife said the ladies' room had no toilet paper and the floor was sticky and wet. Overall, not a great experience. Stopped by here the other day for breakfast and was very pleasantly surprised. As someone who lived in San Antonio for 5 years, I was not expecting to have a traditional Mexican spot in Augusta be as good or better than a lot of the places I had there. But when I saw the very hole-in-the-wall looking building and that pretty much everyone working there and eating there spoke Spanish, I knew I was going to have a great experience. I ordered 2 cabeza gorditas, 1/2 bowl of menudo, and 1 pastor taco. Menudo (4.5/5): one of my regrets was living in SA for so long without ever having tried Menudo, and the menudo here made me realize I definitely missed out on some good experiences. The portion for a half bowl was very generous, and there were plenty of large tripe chunks. For those who haven't had it, there is an offal/gamey taste to it but if you are used to that type of food (bun bo hue, tripas, chitterlings, etc) this will be right up your alley. The oregano, onions, and lime really balance it out so it's not overpowering, and there's just enough of a kick if you add some of the peppers. The soup is the epitome of comfort food, and I am excited to have it when cold weather comes around. Gordita (5/5): The main star of the show was the gordita cabeza tacos. The cabeza (cheek meat) was so tender and again, portions were generous with large well salted chunks. It honestly was reminiscent of some of the best cabeza tacos I've had in SA and at 3.50 per gordita (around 2.5 per taco) I think the price is more then fair. The gorditas had good corn flavor just like the tortillas and there was just a slight char to them to add even more flavor. The white cheese and sour cream also added a nice touch. Pastor taco (4/5): Honestly I am unsure if I haven't tried the right spots in SA or if I just am never really impressed with al pastor tacos, but I have never had a truly amazing experience with them. Here as well the al pastor meat is well marinated and decently tender but not mind blowing: it's a safe, solid choice that I would get for someone who might not be as adventerous. X factors: The corn tortillas here are really great. I am almost 100% sure they are homemade, and they aren't too stiff like some corn tortillas I have had in the past. Very soft, subtle flavor, I would get these over flour tortillas any time. You get a serving of them to go with your menudo, and they would definitely go toe to toe with any corn tortillas at San Antonio. Something else that was really nice was the pickled onions. I'm used to getting raw onions at most Mexican places which is the standard, but these pink pickled onions that are pickled with habanero gave a nice kick and really spiced up the gorditas/tacos/menudo. I am so glad I found this spot and can definitely see myself coming back at least once a month. To have a place that would compete with any great taco spot in San Antonio at Augusta is a true blessing, and I can't wait to return. read more

Authentic like the ones I remember getting from the taco trucks in Cali. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the pickled onions that are marinated in habaneros. No one else has this on the side. I don't see how we've overlooked this place for so long. It's tucked behind the main road. Home made salsas, picked spicy onions, limes and lots of cucumbers and radishes great you as you are seated. The chips are crispy and the green salsa packs quite the kick. I had a beautifully made torta Cubana and my wife had the chicken flautas. The food was fantastic -- perhaps among my top ten favorite Mexican I've had in the United States. Their rice is amazing. The place itself is kind of a dive and has a real working-class feel. We visited 11/15/2020. The servers wear masks. There were a couple hand sanitizer dispensers. Few customers wore masks. Lots of customers playing pool or drinking beers without masks. If you're worried about catching COVID from being too close to other patrons in a restaurant, would recommend against this place. read more

My friends and I were driving through here for a road trip, and we were very glad that we stopped here! First of all - 6 Stars for the service here. I don't remember the name of the waitress who served us, but - she was polite, efficient, and made us feel very accommodating in this lovely restaurant. Bonus Points for fitting 9 People at the last minute. Second - the food here is amazing! I ordered the chicken burrito (picture below) but my pic does not do it justice - this burrito was flavorful (chicken cooked just right) with the sauce and guacamole wonderfully enhancing the flavor. This place is awesome! We've been a few times and have always had a good experience. The service is sometimes lacking, but the food is fresh and tasty. We always start with chips and salsa, and the salsa tends to be pretty spicy, so be warned. I've worked my way through the menu, and I love the tacos, zopes, huarache, and gorditas. Everything is super fresh and makes me feel healthy (as opposed to sometimes Mexican food makes me feel bleh because it's mostly cheese). These are a lot of veggies and fresh ingredients, so you're not weighed down when you leave. If you're in Augusta, I highly recommend stopping by for lunch! read more

Actually, for this Saturday afternoon, we were the only occidental gringoes. Lots of Mexican paper cut out decor and bright colors in bright fluorescent lighting. There is a back room bar and pool table near bathrooms. The bathrooms could use a good cleanup and update. We were made welcome entering and seating quickly for 5 of us. Our server, was very friendly and patient explaining how and what to order. The menu is in English and Spanish, but the names of dishes and the way the dishes were made was explained beautifully. The waitress brought out fresh cucumbers and radishes, pickles red onions, fresh limes and salsas to prep us for toppings to our meal. All the tortillas and sopas are made in house. The salsas (jalapeño and spicy) were nice flavors. It's an extra $1.50 for chips and salsas. Soups are served only on weekends. Noticed a lot of people ordering soups today. I tried the menudo(cow tripe) soup. Half order($6.95) and thought it was filled with nice tender chunks of tripe and very earthy, gamely, and pungent. Using the limes and spicy salsa added a nice balance to the soup. Also, had the tender lagune (tongue) sopas. I like that the tortilla was puffy and grilled lightly crispy. And the tongue was tender and thinly sliced. I like that it's authentic and locals eat here. Very friendly and Mexican family oriented. I'm a fan. read more

Mehhhhhh is how I thought about this place. So I love hole in the wall Mexican spots. I like when abuelita is in the kitchen yelling at her grand babies to get to serving. Not sure if the server was having a bad day, but she had the hardest time understanding us and we both speak Spanish. I kind of felt like they needed someone to help out in the restaurant so they called a friend who wanted to make extra money, and this is the girl that came in. Food: the pozole was good. Lots of pork, and all the fixings on top. My fiancé got a quesadilla. It was a little odd looking, not like some of the other Mexican restaurants I've hit up, but he said it tasted good. This was my first experience here. A very unassuming building conjoined to a small Latin market. This place is a true hole in the wall with big booths, a small bar, and even a pool table in the back. A+ authentic atmosphere and food. The chips do not seem to be house made but the salsas that come with the chips/salsa combo certainly are, and will knock your socks off. I ordered 3 tacos (two pollo, one asada). They come standard with cilantro and diced onion on a corn tortilla. The dipping salsas for the tacos were incredibly flavored and spiced to perfection. My husband ordered one Gordita (asada) and one taco (carnitas), he said they were both excellent. We received sliced radishes, cucumbers, limes, and pickled red onions with our salsas before our food came out. All very delicious as well. This place is not afraid to add a little spice to the food, which I appreciate. I knew I was going to enjoy this place when they brought out a salsa verde that looked delicious and tasted even better - plus it has a legit nice little burn to it! Along with the salsa, the server also brought out chips, limes, pickled red onions, radishes/cucumbers, and two bottles of salsa (red and what basically seems to be the same green as their table salsa). As excited as I was, the red salsa didn't live up to the green, and the chips are those round ones you get at with ballpark nachos - not my favorite. But no big deal, I was enjoying the green salsa too much to care and cooling off with a bottle of Coke. Although they offer some more adventurous meats, I kept it simple and tried an asada quesadilla and two tacos - pastor and pollo. All were on homemade corn tortillas that came out looking beautiful (the quesadilla was basically a larger shell with some melted mozzarella). Pastor was easily the standout - not off a spit and with pineapple, but a tasty marinade and nicely caramelized. Asada wasn't bad, but the pollo was a little disappointing. And selfishly wish they had some carnitas! Nice little spot, friendly server, and so many great elements to the food, but also some that just didn't click with me. There are people who love Mexican food and those who like it. I'm a "liker". But when I have it, I want authenticity. And this place is that and so much more. I was in the mood for a new place and for Mexican (I eat based on "what do I feel like?"). This place popped up (being near me) and the reviews sold me immediately. I have learned from my time as a food lover (basically, since birth) and from my obsession with all things Anthony Bourdain that the best places are often not the prettiest. They aren't stressing decor or fancy napkins. They are making sure they bring the best meal to the table. I arrived to this tiny building and walked in to find a grocery store (with cowboy boots) immediately in front of me and the restaurant to the left. When the first thing to hit the table after menu's and drinks is a bowl of pickled onions, sliced radishes and cucumber, and lime wedges you know it's on! I had to order some salsa and chips. That homemade salsa should be sold by the bottle (Actually, maybe it is. I should've asked.) It is fresh and spicy. Fajita's are my go-to for a first visit. If you can't do that right, it's all down hill. Here they have one with ribeye shank. This gives you a thin sliced piece of beef coupled with the flavors that come with the interwoven fat. Delicious. Everything was flavored and cooked to perfection and the shells came out steaming. I had to sit them out of the foil to let them cool off. Needless to say, we will be back soon.
