Some friends and I went to La Cocina Del Ray on our lunch break. It was relatively busy, but no wait for a table. It took about 30 minutes for us to get our food from the time we came in, but there were 10 of us so I'll cut them some slack there, as I saw plenty of tables of 2-4 people able to get their food quicker than us. The food was well worth the wait. I ordered the Queso Birrira, and it was so savory and delicious, honestly it was some of the best Mexican food I I've ever had. If you are hungry-hungry, this is the place to go. Food is priced well and portions are very large for the platters. You can make most things either more Tex-Mex or Mex-Mex (cilantro and onions vs. cheese and sauce). There's also a salsa bar to help you keep eating chips until the food arrives (or splash on your food). Service was rather slow, so if you are in a rush it would make sense to tell them that. From done to getting a receipt and then paying for the meal was an additional 20 minutes. There's a lot of seating and I'd call the room on the louder side. Finally, I got fish tacos. My portion - even though it was the same cost as a platter - was less than half of what my fellow diners was. I'd go back, but also check out some other nearby spots for comparison. Just ate here not too, long ago with my girlfriend, she wrote her own review but I also wanted to add my experiences too this as well. When we arrived as she mentioned in her review we were told to seat ourselves. Then were given our server and he was just flat out mean, and disregarded us. He and other staff kept talking the whole time we were seated, which was not disrespectful outright, especially to someone who also works in food service. I understand when slow days become alot but that paired with the rude service was just not peasant to me. The food was very expensive, when we ordered we got 2 drinks, a little queso with what was supposed to be chorizo, and some fajitas. Coming to a total of 30 buck not including the tip. I tried to eat the queso and it was not very good, tasted like breakfast sausage from a school. I told my girlfriend that maybe it was just that one thing and the other food might be good, (I now owe her a good meal). We got the fajitas and I cannot explain that it didn't look real. It all looked plastic everything was unseasoned and bland. The rice was the only thing that looked seasoned (it was not). It must have been near the seasoning, if they actually have any. The beans, and I cannot say this more plain it was orange. Like mushed carrots but more dull, and honestly maybe that would have tasted better. I took one bite of my fajita, and couldn't eat anymore. After getting our food I also saw one of the workers in the back wipe his nose with his shirt, and felt even more sick. I won't ask for a refund so they can buy themselves some real food, with no offense to anyone in the back because they might have been, even a little nicer than our server was. First of all we are not from here. We are from Alabama and just moved here and I am a big fan of some Mexican food. We have been looking for a spot and we came up to this one. We first were greeted right when we came through the door and you can sit anywhere! After that we were immediately asked on what we wanted to drink and it came in no time! I have never had it with pineapple before and man was that a twist for the greater good. It was amazing. The chips were perfect not salty and not burnt. We finally went ahead and ordered. We ordered cheese dip, chicken nachos, chicken flautaus, and chicken fajitas. We wanted a taste of everything and I mean EVERYTHING! We got our food less than 10 minutes. Everything was awesome! The nachos had a lot of cheese, the flautaus had a lot of chicken, and they chicken fajitas had a lot of FLAVOR. Lastly, the environment of the place was awesome. Nice tables. Nice painting. Very cool place. Also, there was someone always sweeping to make sure everything was clean and presentable. We not used to that in Alabama. Overall I gave this restaurant 5 stars because of the pricing, the environment, the service, and the FOOD! I ALMOST FORGOT!!! They have unlimited NAPKINS! We came here for dinner on a Friday night. The inside is bright and designed as if you were sitting in the courtyard between houses which I so liked because it reminded me of a high school set if they were going to do Encanto. You order as soon as you walk in and Jenny is so friendly and helpful with this being our first time. There are some beers and glass Fanta beverages as well as coke products. My husband LOVED the salsa bar options. The mixed fajitas were so flavorful and the carnitas were made fresh today and the portions were enough for dinner and lunch tomorrow. The desserts came out the same time as the meals so they were not as warm by the time we got to them and they were okay. I preferred the dessert chimi to the molten chocolate cake. When I picked up the items, the waiter greeted me with enthusiasm and a smile. He asked "if I was Dinning in or ordering to go". I replied I was picking up an order and he knew it was for DoorDash. Waiter found my order and said, "enjoy the meal". This place hasn't failed me yet. This is the second time we have been here within the last month. The Spanish rice was very hot and tasteful with the Gordita, which was very filling. The quesadilla gringa (steak) was really huge! I thought it was one big piece that was folded in half but it was actually two separate quesadillas. Now that meal was so filling. We love that the have a low carb menu and that they are so close to our house. Their restaurant is large enough to accommodate a large group and we have hosted a few dinners with friends on weeknights after work - it is so easy and convenient. I absolutely love their fresh salsa bar - I haven't found any other Mexican restaurant in our area that has a fresh salsa bar like them! It is a little awkward at first I'd you aren't familiar with their set up, but they take your order when you walk in and then you find a seat. So you can easily be overwhelmed when looking at the menu items and not know what you want. Went based on the positive reviews. Found a mostly empty place, with watery salsa for the chips. Food was OK at best. Pretty expensive for most Mexican restaurant items (ex: $14 for a quesadilla) Which if what we ordered was really good then I'd be happy justifying the price. Felt like we received bland food with no flavor, chicken that I'd assume by taste and texture was frozen and not fresh, and they don't offer taco/hamburger meat for their tacos. Well what a pleasant surprise. It's my first time La Cocina del Rey and I was pleasantly pleased. The service was great, she was attentive but patient since I was new couldn't figure out what I wanted. The margarita was pretty good. They have a salsa bar. I love being able to try different items without having to pay for them. Their menu is a wonderful mix of Mexican and Southern food. I know it sounds weird but it works. We came for breakfast. Upon entering we are greeted and seat ourselves. We sit and look at the take out menu and decide what to order. I got the Zoe Burrito and my husband the Papa Con Chorizo. After we order, a very nice male employee came around, gave us chips, offered to refill our drinks, and was very hospitable. Friendliest person working that morning. We cut our burritos in half to share with each other. Neither seemed to have diced potatoes or sour cream. If they were in there, they were very soft and gave no crunch factor or depth to the burrito. My husband also asked for sour cream in his, an extra fifty cents, but we didn't see any or taste it. If it was, they went skimpy. Both burritos were pretty good, I did prefer the Zoe more than the other, but I wouldn't order either again. They both came with french fries, which weren't bad, but I was hoping it be more breakfast based, like little cut up seasoned potatoes. Being new I was surprised a few booths had duct tape on them. The TV menu was a little odd, so I'm glad they had take out menus. There was also a little white board with translations and "specials"(?) that you could order from. Overall, we will probably come back, although not any time soon. read more

Took some persuading for the wife but she eventually agreed I got the chicken nachos and upgraded to supreme. I asked for no tomato and it still came with them. There wasn't much of any cheese either. I always think there'd be a generous amount of cheese, but not the case here. Overall, they were just okay. I wouldn't order it again. My wife got one of the monthly special burritos. I accidentally ordered the wrong one but I went back in immediately and they changed it, since it was the same price, thank you for that. She wasn't a fan however. She kept telling me how dry it was. Come to find out they skipped both the sour cream and guac. $11 for a dry burrito. She wasn't happy at all. We went with friends and all ordered chicken-based items. Overall, the food is good but we all agreed there was something odd about the chicken - it wasn't warm (room temp) and was dry. It reminded me of rehydrated food (like from an MRE). It was also cut into tiny pieces. Maybe it comes in bulk from a food service company? The gordita looked pretty, but the corn wrap was not good - it was rock hard, dry, and tasted like corn meal. That's not how a gordita should be. Upsides are portion, low cost, decor, and food taste. The service was about midrange; not overly attentive but friendly and helpful. The house coffee was not flavorful, and the tea was not a type I like either - next time I'll get a soft drink or water. The burrito was absolutely huge and I'm not sure how my husband finished it. I loved everything on the El Rey Breakfast, from the avocado slices to the delightfully marinated/seasoned steak. Good was GREAT. Service was ok. However I was SERIOUSLY overcharged. I understood when the menu prices when I walked I were higher than the version of the menu online - that happens. But when you ring up, it didn't display a price/total to the customer, and the point-of-sale credit card machine doesn't either. When I got home to eat I noticed the receipt was about $1.50 overcharged for the one item I got; then they added a $1.50 takeout fee (which is disclosed NOWHERE; then added tax to the subtotal; then added ANOTHER unauthorized "takeout" fee. I expected the run of the mill Mexican restaurant but boy was I in for a surprise. I ordered the Fajitas El Rey and it was amazing to say the least! The mixture of chicken, steak and chorizo topped with cheese It's built like a takeout restaurant that you can choose to dine in. On this occasion I decided to dine in and I was first surprised that they didn't have alcohol which I'm not used too but I wasn't planning on drinking anyways(well maybe I could've had a Margarita or 3 lol). After I placed my order and payed at the counter a waiter quickly bought out chips and as I was going to ask for Salsa, he pointed me to the Salsa bar . I don't know about you but I love a bar full of Salsas that I can taste and try. As I was about 7 or 8 chips in, my Fajitas came out piping hot. I was amazed by the speediness of the food and the taste was flavorful, juicy and outright the best Fajitas mix that I ever encountered.
