Steer clear of this establishment. Decided to go to Mexicali blue today since I was in the PK area. I haven't had anything from Mexicali Blue since they closed the New Paltz location (which went downhill). Food was just as bad as I remember it being, the meat was dry and flavorless. Rice is undercooked, cheese tastes sour. This food does not leave you feeling well. This used to be a good business with decent food but it's been ran into the ground over the past 3-4 years. There's a reason why they don't have a location in New Paltz anymore. The dude that works there is a dirty slob, who is the same guy that used to run the New Paltz location when it started going downhill. Much better and more authentic Mexican food can be found. read more

Okay, so I was weary because I assumed it was a fast food unhealthy greasy spot and my husband forced me in ....buttttt let me tell you, the food was delicious! You won't be disappointed. Went there today for lunch and I ordered the beef brisket burrito lunch special with butternut squash soup. The brisket burrito was too salty and the soup cold. They were served at the same time. Although the place was slow and only one other table the waitress came to check up much later when I already mostly eaten the burrito. I told her the soup was cold and the brisket was salty. Unfortunately I think these are the worst tacos I have ever had. Really expensive and underwhelming. Hype is there only bc it was on tv. Tortillas were not warmed up. These tacos range from 5.5 (sweet potato) 7.5 (fish). This is for ONE taco... the size of street tacos ... and u have to pay for cheese on ur burritos !!! What the heck ???!! This is probably one of the best Mexican/south western restaurants not only in the area but just about anywhere. From the moment you walk in you get a very welcoming vibe. Your greeted at the door as if your part of the family. The entire staff is wonderful and the food is simply amazing! It's not your standard taco/ burrito joint. They take food to a whole new level! They have a serious variety of draft beer that you just don't find in most establishments. From IPA's to the lighter side you will be blown away by the selection. If cocktails are more to your liking, they have a full bar and are capable of most any drink you desire. So if your looking for an amazing meal, give Mexicali Blue a shot! This is a favorite Mex stop for me. Or was. Stopped in for lunch. 12-1. One other table of 3 and a single at the bar. Seven employees. 1 chef working hard. The rest? Clowning around and getting their own eats. STILL love the food here (haven't had a bad meal personally) but the owner needs to be a presence again - it shouldn't take that long to put a couple tacos and a quesadilla together. So I had to take two stars off for my current experience here. FYI I'm currently here waiting for my food. Only reason I'm giving this three stars is cause the food is always solid, and I pray it is today. All I'm going to say is the current staff has left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I come from hospitality, this is pretty poor in all aspects. The waitresses are more into their looks and overdone makeup that they're over looking the guest experience(the two blonds, one has tattoos the other has glasses). In also sitting at the bar still waiting for my drink, I don't even see it being made. It's not busy, nor is there a lack of hands regarding staff. I was very excited to go to this restaurant. The ambience is really nice the one tall guy came up very nice very welcoming and cute suggested a few things. I got a chicken spicy burrito which was $17. For what I got for the amount I spent I was very disappointed. The taste of the chicken was good but it seem like it had way too much mayonnaise in the burrito it was very very salty they could've added lettuce to make it a full tight burrito I would never order that again or go there anytime soon. Mexicali is a few steps above a Taco Bell, with sit down waiter service and a bar, with higher prices. I was on a guacamole roll yesterday and stopped in with my homie. I like the whole bar set up and that they say everything is 'fresh' there..Had to test for myself. We started off with guac and chips and for $8.50 i was really hoping it was a good helping. It was- about two cups worth and after that I had no room to try any tacos. Guac was good but generic, the chips were really lacking, merely out of a bag and thrown in a basket. I get that you want to be fresh and all Mexicali but a fryer isnt going to dampen your vibe. Housemade chips out of a fryer really would have topped the app off right but oh well. Cant say it was bad, service a little slow towards the end when we were waiting for the check but overall I'd try it again. I think I was more impressed by the overall atmosphere of Mexicali Blue. That would include the drink list, with all its margaritas and some North River brews, and the decor. I wish there were a classification called "Mexican Bistro" to more accurately describe the food here. It's not your "burrito with lots of refried beans and rice" kind of place (thought if felt like I paid a "with refried beans and rice" price for my burrito, as good as it was). I do appreciate the complexity of the tastes of their food. The available sauces expand upon that, though there were several - the ones with fruit in their name, for example - which just didn't appeal to me. Service was okay. One part of our group's order, a bowl of soup, came out deceptively late compared to everything else. I think what I like best is that Mexicali Blue compliments some of the other Mexican restaurants in the area, so that I have a variety of styles from which to choose. read more

This is my second time trying this place and it was most good! The food is rather pricey but it is well worth it. The staff is friendly and the portions are large. The thing they emphasis is the food never being frozen or pre-cooked but given the type of food not really much of a wait. I recommend the chicken tortilla soup and black bean soup. I wasn't that big a fan of tacos but LOVED the burritos. You can get them naked which means they plate it and out the tortilla to the side. Drinks are also great if you order a large glass is literally face size. Try it out but do make sure to get ready to pay at least $20 a person. read more

Hi Mexi Cali Blue, I am almost 100% satisfied every time I go, but this last time today, I was very disappointed. Every time I get the 3 tacos special and am given a plentiful size chunk of catfish on a medium size tortilla. This time I was given baby size pieces on a tiny tortilla that ripped when I picked it up. It seemed so not fresh and as if it was sitting there. I was sitting and waiting for my order so I assumed it would be fresh (ordered for pick up). Why did you do this to me Mexi Cali. We've dined at Mexicali Blue many times. However, it's been some time since we've been there so we decided to go for brunch. Several months ago we enjoyed brunch at Mexicali Blue so we decided to give it a go. It was a rainy Saturday and what better to perk up the spirits than unlimited Bloody Marys. :) Unfortunately, one sip of the Bloody Mary and it was all over for me. Unlike the Bloody Marys of the past, this one was sweet with a clump of horseradish sitting on the top. No celery, no olives, nothing but ice and a straw. After taking the first stip it was obvious to me that sugar was added to the drink. Who adds sugar to a Bloody Mary? It took an inordinately long time for the waitress to show up again and when she did, I returned the drink and decided to drink water instead. I might have tried something else, but the service there was so slow and the music so loud, I thought the quicker I get out of there the better. The other disappointment was we had to ask for the brunch menu. Because we had brunch at Mexicali Blue before, we knew they had a brunch menu. Unfortunately, the waitress did not offer the brunch menu. We had to ask for it. Her explanation for not giving us the brunch menu was, "He's printing it out." After some time she brought over a wet and soiled brunch menu. I didn't even want to touch it. Eventually, she came back to take our orders. The slow service, dirty menu and undrinkable Bloody Mary clinched it for me. There was nothing Mexicali Blue could offer me. My husband ordered his meal to go and we left. I was saddened to have gone through such an experience there. In the past when we visited Mexicali Blue, the service was excellent. We were there so often that I barely had to look at the menu, the wait staff knew what I wanted. Those were the good ol' days. Regardless of what type of food I may be craving, I'm always up for going to Mexicali Blue for a meal. Wife: "What do you feel like eating tonight?" Me: "You know... I think I'm in the mood for Thai.." Wife: "How bout Mexicali blue instead?" Me: "Sold" Over the last 2 years since I've lived in this area, this has been one of my favorite places to go for dinner. I've never had a bad meal and can always rely on it to leave me satisfied. We will typically start with guac and chips - I always love that they give us two bowls of guac, no sharing needed! My wife's go to meal is the veggie burrito but on occasion will have the portobello and squash burrito. She always raves about them being her favorite burritos. As for me, I wil typically go with the BBQ Brisket or Pulled Pork Burritos. Both are fantastic with tender meat full of flavor. Everything is always fresh and cooked well. Lately I've been on a quesadilla kick with the chipotle chicken being my favorite (followed closely by the Brisket and pulled pork versions of them). They have a few real good hot sauces to choose from (at a sauce station at the end of the bar). On occasion they have a live band playing inside, if you're into that kind of thing. Overall this is a can't miss spot and my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. Well, I thought I'd give this spot another go around. I got the Mahi Mahi taco, Just 1. Pretty tasty, overpriced but good, I had to actually ORDER chips and salsa. What Mexican spot doesn't automatically bring that? (It was more of a pico than salsa) I came in solo and sat at the bar. I was the only one in the building. Phone rang, person that answered the phone then turned to another employee, I believe the owner and said GrubHub was acting questions. They were told to tell the caller they were closed. Not only was that a lie, but they weren't even busy at all. Very disappointed. Being a restaurant owner myself, I would never deny taking someone's $$. Middle of the road, albeit highly overpriced Mexican food. If the prices were lower, I might give more stars since the price would be commensurate with quality. I also can't believe there isn't complementary chips and salsa. It's the least they could do to counterbalance the cost. Though, in their favor, they do have a great hot sauce bar. I've eaten here multiple times, but have never said wow, until I got the bill and realized how much I paid for a vegetarian burrito. My niece got some sort of pork burrito that cost $16 which is laughable when you consider it's a scoop of meat and fillers with no sides, just a burrito. Fair warning: DO NOT order from their app. Given the propaganda they have littered their restaurant with, i assumed it was how they took orders. I ordered only to find a convenience fee. Convenient for who? It's no more convenient to use an app than a phone. When I asked the girl at the counter about it, the manager jumped in and said they charged him a fee, so they would charge it to their customers. Excuse me? You're charging $16 a burrito and dumping money into promotional materials for a service whose fee you are passing off to the customers? Hard pass from me. I've never been charged an online fee for any other local restaurant. I asked if I called to place the order next time if there would be a fee (wondering if pre order was similar to delivery at this locale) and he looked at me like I was the dumbest person in the room, huffed a quick no, and moved away. Given the many complaints about management, my experience seems pretty tame. There's more to food service than food that makes customers want to come back. This place is so unbelievably expensive - especially for bad food. We got takeout today, it took 40 minutes for our food to be done and it was cold. They also messed up every single part of our order and it gave me a stomach ache. To top it off only one person from the staff was properly wearing a mask. I've only been here twice and had their highly rated Breakfast burrito and the 3 little pigs quesadilla and I have to say they're damn good! Everything has flavor and meats are marinated to perfection which brings the whole meal together. Great drink menus with local breweries on tap and an excellent salsa bar that pleases any flavor savors palate. A great color themed inside with awesome casual music (Beetles, Sublime, etc) staff has been very helpful in recommendations and describing what sauces they have available. This was my first (and last) experience with Mexicali Blue. Since it's Cinco de Mayo, I ordered at 4:25pm (what I thought was early), with an estimated delivery time of 60-90 minutes. Delivery guy rolled up to my house at 8:38pm with two ice cold burritos, a tiny container of guacamole, a fairly melted (what should've been frozen) strawberry margarita and a semi-warm, tasteless sangria. Take a look at my picture - that cost $76. We were so hungry that we ended up eating something else for dinner after we didn't hear a word from the restaurant for over 4 hours. I would've preferred them canceling our order if they were too slammed instead of going radio silent for hours (including not answering the phone). Made the mistake of ordering on their site instead of through an app, so there was no way to cancel. Never again. read more

Yeah not ordering from here ever again. Two times in the past year we have ordered from here for delivery, two times they have messed up our orders. First time: Online order and they did not have what we ordered when I went to pick it up, kid there could not refund the card because it was online, so had to give us a gift card. Second time (today), ordered a huge meal online, get a bag without our appetizer. Call up and explain this and get told we could come and pick it up, we ask for delivery ask for address. We call up 20 minutes after this (we are done with dinner by now) and call up to see the status, still not out (girl at front desk was nice) and we get transferred to the manager. He basically says "Ummm maybe somebody could bring you the food in 15-20 or we could refund the money." We took the money back We shouldn't have to wait over an hour for a order of chips and gauc. Maybe, apologize and get it out ASAP. We will not be going back here again. We have eaten here a few times and have enjoyed the food. From now on however we will be going out of our way to go to Cafe Maya. read more
