Went for the first time for lunch today. We enjoyed the chips and salsa while reviewing the menu. The chips were still warm and the salsa came out tasting fresh and even had two chilled mini-bowls to pour it into. Both were very tasty. We ordered the Nacho Supreme with pulled beef. The beef was extremely tasty and flavorful and there was plenty of onions, tomatoes and cheese as well. The nachos also had refried beans on it. I'm not a huge fan of that as it tends to make the nachos a bit "wet", but none-the-less it was very good! The nachos came with a side of sour cream and guacamole. I ordered the "Choose two" lunch option and got a chimichanga and the chili relleno. Both were great. My wife was too full from just the nachos and munched on those and side of refried beans, which was a very big portion for a side dish. I look forward to going back. I've been to Mexicali a few times for drinks and food before. I've never had a bad meal there and seem to be pleased every time I go. Yesterday, I went to Mexicali during a snowstorm. The bartender Lisa was working. It was very busy, she was working tables and managing the bar and doing a great job. We had drinks and fajitas at the bar both were pretty good. We left, I get a message on my phone from Lisa the bartender at Mexicali that I had left my wallet! I was nervous because I had over $100 in my wallet. I went back and she was at the door with my wallet with nothing missing ! Thanks so much Lisa! That's great service! read more

Service A+ Food A+ Price A+ _____ That's 5 stars for me! Came in here about an hour before closing and were greeted with smiles when we walked in. We were sat right away and our server brought us waters quickly. We were also given fresh, warm chips and homemade salsa within 5 mins of sitting. I opted for the steak and shrimp fajitas with a side of queso and the hubs got a shredded chicken quesadilla and chicken tortilla soup. The steak was absolutely AMAZING! Fresh flank steak, not over cooked, and had a great grilled taste to it. I also really enjoyed the rice and beans. After living in California, we've become serious Mexican food snobs and this place did not disappoint. I love Mecicali! The staff is always smiling and friendly. Service is FAST. As soon as you sit down, someone comes with fresh chips and salsa. The salsa is in a small carafe with 2 dipping bowls, so you don't have to worry about double-dipping! We always get the cheese dip which is a blanco queso. First of all, I think it's pretty good for some of us in the smaller towns of Central Massachusetts that Ware has been able to open and -- to this point -- support two reasonably classy restaurants: Ghepetto's and now Mexicali. Sturbridge has a good number of quality restaurants, but the direction of Ware has been sorely lacking. I've lived in the area for a long time and unless you want Chinese or pizza, you are mostly out of luck. Mexicali, first of all, does not break any mold. Their style, food, pricing and presentation is nearly identical to that of Acapulco's in Enfield, down to the bowl of warm tortilla chips served with a small carafe of salsa when you're seated. I would be shocked if they were not owned by the same people. Fortunately, I LOOOOOVE Acapulco's. The decor inside is much nicer than what you would expect by it's drab exterior in the middle of a run-down small-town shopping center. Everything is crisp, clean and there is some cool Spanish tile work, as well as warm, inviting colors throughout. It feels a bit spacious and not at all cramped. I ordered the Molè Enchiladas with rice and beans. I think they were pretty great, but I am not exactly sure since I cleared my plate in about 3 minutes flat so I can't guarantee I actually TASTED it. There was almost a tinge of "heat lamp fever" to the dish. The rice was just slightly dehydrated in it's top-most points and the enchiladas themselves did not QUITE have that "just made" taste. But the very good rendition of molè sauce on top and excellent refried beans brought it home for me. I would order this again and again, no problem. My very picky wife ordered a Fajita Melt. Just like at Acapulco's the menu has no mention of mayonnaise being a condiment on the sandwich but when you ask the server if it's part of the dish -- they will say "yes". She was slightly turned off by the overabundance of coagulated cheese (it had re-hardened slightly), and she wishes the tomatoes had been diced instead of sliced. However, she said there was no mistaking the freshness of produce used in making the sandwich. In addition to the tomatoes, the lettuce was quality (no iceberg here) and the grilled peppers and onions even though they had just come off a grill, were not obviously frozen before use. She found this a bit impressive since it can be hard to convey freshness in cooked vegetables. Our toddler daughter had the cheese quesadilla. She declined the quesadilla but found herself enthralled by the battered french fries it came with. Apparently, their apple juice must have been fresh out of the juicer because she drank it like the Mott's at home was swill water. I can't explain that one. The service was about a B+. Initially, the greeter and manager shuffled us around a little bit. We were shown to an "OK", but not preferable, table when someone has a high chair. The greeter went to get the high chair, which took an abnormally long time. The manager came over and offered us a better, different table, so -- SHOCK -- the greeter had a harder time finding us to deliver the high chair she must have dug out of a storage closet 2 miles away. Our waitress, Carmela, was really very attentive, patient and everything I could have asked for. She knew the menu, it's content and ingredients very well. I would absolutely find myself going back here. The staff was friendly as a whole and it did not have that "my table/your table" atmosphere among the staff. A random waitress came by and offered my daughter a balloon, even though she was not our waitress. It was impressive to the level that it's one of the few "worthy" places in the immediate area. Great restaurant , excellent food, consistently good . I have never gone there and been dissatisfied. The Margaritas are no doubt some of the best I have had, you can just go with the house margaritas, you can tell they Don't use low end taquilia. Service is always Excellent. I have been here several times and it never seemed as good as the Spencer location. The service was downright awful/rude a few times, like they didn't care about my small order or the fact that I am usually alone. Once, the waitress basically just abandoned me and someone else had to help me. My brother and I frequented the Spencer location and know of/have nicknames for many of the regular workers. There is for instance this one guy, seems like higher on the food chain than most, who always looks upset that I after leaving call "the stern Mexican" or "mean" or :"angry Mexican". He seemed upset I was there once! Well, the food still hasn't improved but the service seemed much better the last 2 times I was there. From the "chips and salsa girl" to waitresses or girl behind the bar. That other guy is still angry looking but hey... The tacos were soggy and cold to lukewarm with some liquid gushing out of them. Never got sick or upset stomach which shocks me but subpar for sure. read more

Usually really good, last time horrible. My previous visits with friends have been terrific and so I was very surprised at the quality of the food. My best friend had the camerones con tocino, which were inedible. They were overcooked and rubbery - she brought them home to her cats. On the upside: our server was friendly and professional, as was all the staff; their rice side is so delicious that I always get an extra order to take home; and there is always a huge portion of my burrito verde to take home for dinner. What I believe annoyed me the most is that after writing them a note similar to this one, I received a boilerplate note thanking me for writing. My friend, who won't speak up and begs me not, at least should get a gift certificate to comp her meal. Previous to my last visit, I would have given four stars; today, not even close. read more

Prob. the 2 nd best place for a meal in the evening in Ware but in comparison to other towns near by that's not saying much. specific's the Enchiladas are lame, the veggies although they seem good are frozen, thawed. My father and I went to eat at the Mexicali this evening for dinner. My dad had just spent the past two days helping my mom to babysit my nephews -- three children under age five -- and was "weary". I knew we needed to have a quiet, pleasant dinner. When we entered the busy restaurant, I was very pleased at the paint colors on the walls and ceiling, and the art objects and paintings. The place is very attractive. When the hostess asked us if it would be just us two tonight, I leaned closer to her and said "Would you please seat us away from families with young children?" She quickly consulted with two other servers. One of them led us off to a booth in the corner, with the table next to us being only suitable for two people. A few minutes later the hostess came over to find us and asked if I was happy with where we had been placed. DELIGHTED. In fact, there were only adults near us for the whole night, though there were some families on the other side of the room. I thought it was great that they really tried to accommodate my request for a peaceful time out on the town. Tortilla chips and a carafe of homemade salsa greet you at the table. The salsa was really fresh and delicious and I ate almost all of it (sorry Dad). I had a house margarita and that was tasty. My father ordered the steak fajitas and I ordered the veggie fajitas. Dad wolfed his meal down, so I know it met with his approval. He said that it was "a lot of steak". I too was very impressed by the size of my plate of sauteed mixed veggies (peppers, onions, squash, snap peas, cauliflower, mushrooms) and the size of my mix-in plate of beans, rice, guacamole, sour cream, shredded cheese and lettuce. I will get a whole second meal out of this. Finally, I had the dessert burrito, stuffed with cheesecake goo and topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce. I ate dessert so fast I only remember it as a happy occasion. Dad was so stuffed he didn't even sample it. We had a very personable waiter who helped us out. His timing was always perfect. Bussers came by at regular intervals and helped us keep our table tidy. These folks were never intrusive. I totally enjoyed myself. The people at the table next to us talked with my dad some, and then a guy at another nearby table got in on the conversation. The atmosphere is friendly and casual, but only in a good way and not in a cheesy way. I grabbed several take-out menus on the way out of the restaurant and will be bringing them to my office tomorrow to give out. I ordered a Combo Mexicali (Choose Three) of which I chose Chicken Enchilada, Pork Chimichanga, and a Beef Burrito. I have been going to this place since it opened and it has consistently been a great experience. I have tried many items on the menu including the mexicali wings which have a sweet/spicy flavor. The fajitas and the specialty tacos are tasty as well. The drinks are delicious, made well and not short on liquor The decorations and the service are second to none. The waitstaff are very attentive and seem to enjoy speaking with you and will get involved in conversations and banter if you want them to. Went a few times when they first opened, it was 'okay'. On a recent visit I was impressed by the improvement. They got rid of the mushy, over-cooked refried beans, and now serve only well-cooked but firm black beans. The rice was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Chips and salsa were good also. I had pork carnitas tacos and they were well cooked, very tasty. My margerita made with Hornitos was delicious as well. Service was polite and friendly. Prices reasonable. What a great find! I had the mole enchiladas and they were fantastic. The complimentary chips and salsa were really good too, with fresh tortilla chips (still hot!) and fresh tasting salsa with lots of cilantro, just how I like it. Hmmm I feel like I must have eaten at a different restaurant from the other reviewers, or maybe I hit it at an off time. We were one of two tables for weekend lunch, and the service was...in a word, awkward. Pleasant, but our water glasses sat empty, drink orders were forgotten and had to be repeated and re-requested, and the food wasn't great. Pork street tacos were a strange mix of dry meat and a tortilla that wasn't up to the job; as soon as you picked one up, the whole thing collapsed and the tortilla started falling apart in a greasy heap. The nachos were ok but not great. Also, no lunch menu on the weekend so be prepared to order full dinners in the $15+ range. Guac was decent and my company was fabulous, but if I'm rating the restaurant, it's a solid meh; however, given the other reviews, I will probably try it again if I'm in the area and see if things improve. read more

So the host was friendly, our waitress was ok. She seemed disengaged and it wasnt even that busy when we went. I had the quesadillas which are tough to mess up, and they were decent, good veggies inside. My party had the fajitas and the enchiladas which they said were ok too. This was an unexpected yet delightful culinary find in Ware - where? Ware! In the mood for Mexican, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did and will return. The food was very good and the portions generous. And do not be deceived by the very plain facade of the building, they've done a nice job at decorating and giving the place atmosphere.
