It is a small deli specializing in Mexican products such as snacks, drinks, breads, tortillas, queso fresco etc... They have lots of regular deli items including ice cream, American chips, some pantry items, fruits, vegetables. They cook both American ( egg plates, pancakes, French toast, heroes, sandwiches, burgers,) and Mexican ( juevos, gordita, tortas, tacos). Had 2 steak tacos and an order of rice and both are really good and the green salsa provided just the right amount of spice. I think they are the only place around that is 24 hours. read more

My all time favorite deli. I have been going to Tap A Keg which is a local bar across the street from Mexican Deli and we make sure to order food every time. The cook is always ready to make my usual order a chop cheese and fries.You can't go wrong with anything here I've tasted just about the entire menu and I'd pick this place over a restaurant any time. I know a certain contingent on the UWS wept tears when Jackson Hole closed down. But I really don't think Jackson Hole had anything on Mexican Deli, a 24 hour bodega serving cheap, filling burgers and fries, monstrously large tostadas, decent tacos, and sandwiches that, well.... could be worse, I guess. It's low-brow, junky, drunk college kid fare -- and I would've killed to've had it as an option back in the day when we'd end up shivering in a slow-moving line, 12-deep, for Sobre Ruedas at 2 a.m. almost every weekend. To be clear, you shouldn't eat this food. It will give you a heart attack, make you fat, give you zits, and make your doctor / mother yell at you. But boy does it hit the spot when you need something to swim in the pool of beer you've got sloshing around in your belly. Here's the lineup: - Hamburgers (a normal size unlike Jackson Hole's structurally unstable monstrosities) come on a soggy bottom bun like Jackson Hole, with a patty that tastes more steamed than griddled. If you get the "large size" (a.k.a. the platter), it comes with iceberg lettuce; hard, wintry tomatoes (at least in winter); rings of raw onions (good way to get rid of your creepy Tinder date); and standard fare fries. Together, they are more than the sum of their parts. - Tostadas. Comically overloaded with your meat of choice, refried beans, and maybe lettuce, cotija cheese and some other things that quickly become an indistinguishable mush as you attempt to eat it with your hands before ceding to a spoon. It's a little like eating a savory pudding with occasional crispy bits. I usually prefer more balance, but if the goal is to increase the ratio of solids to liquids in your stomach, this is an excellent choice. And I won't pretend I don't enjoy it. - Lengua tacos. The tortillas are kinda crappy -- the same ones you get at Sobre Ruedas and other quick-stop taco trucks around the city. But that lengua is actually pretty good, soft, slightly snappy, not heavily seasoned so you can taste that really wonderful lengua flavor. They come with sliced radishes and potent green salsa. The lengua to tortilla ratio is very, very high so you'll barely register the crappy tortillas. - The fried chicken can be kind of good depending on who's manning / womanning the fryer. The hero sandwiches can be had for a pittance and they probably wouldn't be too bad if it weren't for the gnarly American cheese that goes on everything and the distinctly rubbery, microwaved texture of the bread. As they are, I'd avoid -- unless there's an urgent need for absorbent solids. Fine dining this is not, but even those of us who have trouble staying awake past 10:00 p.m. these days can appreciate the late-night drunk food genre. It's just that for us, late-night means 10:10 p.m. read more

the most convenient deli in the neighborhood (if they actually answer the phone or deliver your order) and the food is good. the service is consistently horrible. this time i called waited an hr for my food. i never received a phone call from the delivery person when i called the store the lady said she would call me back never called me back fast forward another half an hour. i get dressed and go get my food then i'm told i can't buy my food. i have to go back home because the man is waiting for me i get home. the man is not here and never was. on a regular basis when i go they all have nasty attitude, they're always on their phone and they rather converse. and flirt with each other then actually cook food and deal with the service. i will never go back in here i strongly recommend nobody else go in here either. read more

I visit weekly for my favorite ingredients - tostadas ($3.75), hominy for pozole, Tajín, Victoria beer ($15 a pack)... Mazapán and Pelón Pelo Rico. They also have those lollipops with a chili coating - YES!! I can't speak too much to their hot food menu, as that's never been why I've stopped by on my way home from the train. A few times though, I've ordered 3 Pastor Tacos ($2.50 each). The Pastor itself is deliciously caramelized but not weirdly pineapple-y like many wannabe Mexican joints. The tacos are small but have that legit diced onion and cilantro I require for a stamp of authenticity. The salsa verde on the tacos is fresh and a level... 6 in spice? I don't have any complaints. I simply don't order much from them because I prefer pozole, burritos, and totopos. They're doing their best to negotiate the needs of the hood with their identity as "Mexican", so no hating. This is my fave place in the area to get a quick cup of coffee (usually en route to the subway like 10 steps away). Not because the coffee is that amazing, but because a cuppa joe is $1, and the girl who works in the morning knows me and my order by now: "cafe con leche, sin azúcar." Sometimes when walking home in the winter at night, the boy at the counter will give me a hot chocolate to keep my hands warm :) As for their food, I did once get their pork tacos which were really good, but honestly the only reason I don't get them anymore is that it took a while to make them and I was awkwardly waiting around the (small) store for 10 minutes. There is no other place in the neighborhood where you can get mexican food at any hour, and food of this quality to boot! first of all, the nachos come with freshly fried chips made from what appears to be hand-cut corn tortillas, not the pock-marked yellow triangles that come in a 10-lb foodservice bag. the rest of the ingredients also appear to be prepared from scratch, and dead giveaway of the real deal: the jalapenos are cut vertically and not into the typical bar-appetizer rings read more

I truly hate to say anything bad about Mexican Deli. I have known the owner since he was running American Deli on 101st St. (now a Verizon store) and then moved up the block to mid-103/104. The food has always been excellent, until the last few months, when the quality has gone downhill. The "cook" is not a cook. He does not WANT to cook. They also now have NO English speaking staff, and all they really want to do is talk with friends on the phone and their friends who visit the store. The most recent issue is that their credit card capability is down and has been for almost a week. The VAST majority of their customers want to use cards or phones (including EBT) to make purchases, and so the store is losing those customers. It seems the staff and the owner simply do not care anymore. It's sad, really, as they seemed to do pretty well, even during Covid. I have to find a new place for a late night meal. read more

I will say that it's a great place to grab your breakfast on the go (you can be in and out in 5 minutes). Sadly, it tastes like they cook everything on the greasy grill with no cleaning in between. By this I mean that your sandwich may taste like the previous customers sandwich (food). Yes, the store is clean and neat and most times everyone is nice and courteous but this one guy... He made my sandwich wrong one day and the next day when my son went he asked him to please make sure it's on a everything bagel because they mixed it up and the gentleman was rude to him and said, "here so you don't complain anymore".
