Arriving rather jet-lagged in NYC we were wanting a quiet and early meal (5:45pm) with Lolita ticking many of our boxes. The front of house "girls" said a table would be available 1-2 hours but a seat at the upstairs bar was immediately available...tired and hungry we agreed. The kicker was: the upstairs tables were *completely unoccupied* and remained so for the hour or so it took to serve us a couple of drinks and eat a meal while seated at the bar. While the food and bar service was great, we expressed out disappointment of not being allowed to sit at a table in the *entirely vacant* upper level (BTW, it was wonderfully quiet up there, compared to downstairs). Excuses ranged from "short staffed" (despite three young women at front of house being deep in conversation with themselves) to "no server upstairs" , both clearly BS as someone clearly served us, but they were apparently "runners" not "servers". WTF? Seriously?! Heaven forbid two people sit at a table in an otherwise totally empty upper level. OK, I'm still tired and cranky, but suggest whoever owns this gem on 45th St give their management some Faulty Towers management training: "Manuel, let me explain something to you...." I liked tamarind better. We had guacamole for the table, and I got the steak tacos. Everything was very good and it came out fast. The house margarita was strong and tasty, chips were acceptable to my chip snobby wife and the guac was plentiful and thick. The only entre we ordered was the chicken mole and it was just right. First & foremost, the bartender Chris was great & very patient with my one too many questions about the extensive drinks menu. I decided to try something new & opted for the pico de gallo vesper. I actually loved it despite it being quite different from my usual go-to's for drinks. It is definitely a slow slip though ie very strong. I also shared the pollo tinga tacos with my friend which were quite good. This place is pricey but it is gorgeous & is in a super touristy area as well. Great vibes with delicious food! Staff is friendly and attentive. We went for dinner with a group and arrived early for our reservation. I don't love hanging around this part of town but when family is visiting, it's necessary sometimes and Lolita is an escape from the midtown hustle. BIG fan of the hightop chairs with backs and arm rests - no uncomfortable stools here! The drinks menu is extensive due to a huge selection of tequila and mezcals, and the food menu is one concise page of simple dishes, done really really well. We had the salsa and guac to start, along with a melted queso that came piping hot in a mole of some kind. It was AMAZING! Esquites (street corn off the cob) is equally fabulous with a yummy smoky flavor and a bit of kick. We ordered a number of assorted tacos for dinner and each one was better than the last. Favorite of the bunch was definitely the pork, but there was no bad choice. Chilled seafood tostada was so so good, but I stupidly filled up on chips and dips so don't make the same mistake I did! I went to Lolita with a few coworkers during a work trip. It was surprisingly crowded and loud for a Tuesday evening, but we were ushered to our table fairly quickly. Our server was fast to the table and service was reasonable. The menu is actually more limited than I expected for a Mexican restaurant and I felt the restaurant was more drink forward than a traditional restaurant. One key note is that a significant portion of the menu that I had expected to be gluten free (as one team member was GF) is not gluten free because of the potential of cross contamination. While I should have checked ahead of time - while I had looked for mexican as it's typically safer, this restaurant offers little on the menu that is. Our food was generally fine, but should I have the opportunity to come back, I likely would look for a different restaurant. read more

To start we got the guacamole and salsa. Guac was pretty good, salsa had a smoke flavor to it. For my meal I got the birria tacos. I was a bit underwhelmed. There was a lot of cheese and the tortilla was very thick. The cheese and tortilla over powered the flavor of the meat and for whatever reason it was very heavy where I wound up just eating the meat. The beef was nice and tender but could've used a bit more flavor. I also ordered a side of the rice and beans. I was disappointed. Neither had flavor and a bowl of flavorless rice and beans should not cost $12. The person I was with enjoyed her meal. She got the carne asada and it was cooked to her liking. The decor, high tables, and dim lighting are such a vibe. The server was kind, kept checking in and did not rush us. The menu had vast options but I was not impressed with the food unfortunately. The Guacamole lacked enough lime, salt, and cilantro. It really tasted like pureed avocado. For the entree we ordered the Pork Carnitas for two. The side of rice and beans were not enough for two people but tasty. Half of the pork provided was dried out, overcooked and too tough to cut or chew. I ordered Tres Leches for dessert. I personally like my Tres Leches on the moister side. Theirs felt as if it wasn't soaked long enough. They also added what tasted like coconut shreds to the icing and served it with a fork; which doesn't allow the customer to also consume the milk portion of the dessert. My friend ordered the Churros for dessert. It had a nice sugar coating, crunch, and accompanying dipping sauces. I ordered the Devil's Trade for my cocktail. It was unique with a spicy kick to it and probably my favorite thing of the night. I had an amazing experience at Lolita. First of all, this restaurant is visually pleasing. Once you step outside, you'll notice the Empire State Building - not bad at all. Check them out during happy hour. Lolita's happy hour menu includes $7 beers, $12 cocktails, and $9 wines. I highly recommend having the guacamole - spicy, if you can. It is served with tortilla chips, and the guacamole is prepared right in front of you. One of the greatest guacamole I've tried... They offer a nice variety of excellent cocktails. The margaritas were fantastic! I had the tacos al pastor, which were delicious, sweet, and savory, but there were only two. I wish I'd had more. Drink choices are exotic and inventive, i had my eyes on a tamarind drink, and mind you, it came w a tamarind stick and it was very satisfying! my friend ordered a dual pina colada, supposingly 1 made traditional way and the other modern way, i had a sip of each and we both like the traditional way, but i have to say the alcohol content in the drink is bare minimum, also ordered some guac and tacos, overall very small portion w not-so-happy-hour price tags. believe they also have happy hour but it's weird late hours. Getting to this place was tough only because the street and surround areas were closed off for a parade. Upon walking in, a live band was playing for the festivities happening today. Our purpose for visiting was to see a pop-up cocktail bar and luckily the drinks delivered. Cocktails were reasonably priced for brunch and with a fair amount of craftsmanship. Although the wait between for taking our order, receiving our drinks, and the single appetizer ordered left much to be desired. What was meant to be a relatively short stopover before our next spot ended up being a longer affair. Upon finishing most of our cocktails, we hoped to cancel the appetizer that had yet to arrive but were told it'd be coming out shortly. Unfortunately, the timing of the long forgotten appetizer made it difficult to enjoy as we were hoping to leave.
