This place is small, and the vibe is very casual, but don't let that fool you since people really turn up here during the happy hour. We came in on a Friday for the happy hour, and it was a lot of fun. They have good drink specials for the happy hour and the food was great. I ordered the cecina quesadilla, and it was very yummy and filling. The rest of the group ordered main dishes, and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. The service was awesome! What a gem! I am so pleased with this spot. My partner and I were craving a Mexican brunch this past weekend so we decided to check this place out. As native Californians, we're pretty wary of trying new Mexican restaurants in NYC, even in East Harlem, because more often than not we are disappointed. I'm so happy to say that is not the case here! The food is fresh and home style. They seat you off right with complimentary chips and salsa (which for some reason is a rarity here in the city). The salsas, both the verde and the roja, are spicy and on point. We got the huevos rancheros and pantera burrito. Both were super filling and egg-cellent (pun totally intended). The waitress kept coming with the water refills and was overall just a sweet lady. There was soccer playing on the tv so this could be a fun spot when the World Cup rolls around. Enchiladas con salsa verde- As a vegetarian, I inquired about veggies- they added peppers and tomatoes. For the cheese, you have a choice between oaxaca and queso fresco. Oaxaca is the superior version of mozzarella, thus my choice. The green sauce is very spicy, however tasty. Rice and beans- Yellow rice is tasty, not salty. Beans were fresh and enjoyable. Horchata - At last, an horchata not relying on sugar. Hearty and great to combat the spicy sauces. Tres Leches- I thought I didn't have space for dessert, Panteras proved me wrong. The food was fantastic and fresh. We started with the guacamole and chips, which was fabulous, the avocado was perfectly ripe and the seasoning was perfect, the avocado flavor really came through. For dinner had the Carnitas enchiladas and the shrimp sopes. Both were excellent. The pork was perfectly crispy and layered with cojita cheese and sour cream. My partner and I ordered a chicken burrito and a steak bowl, after eating and a few hours later, we started seeing symptoms of food poisoning. It's such a shame because we support local businesses in our area and to experience this, it makes me not want to eat here again. What was weird was once we ordered from the app the food came in 5 minutes which was quick service but what makes me think this is that they already had the food ready and I assume it was sitting out for too long. My sister, my friend, and I had such a good time! We love right down the street in East Harlem, but that was our first time really exploring the neighborhood. We tried a little bit of everything for brunch. Chips and guacamole, pancakes, grilled chicken, shrimp tacos, mahi mahi tacos, both types of horchatas, and finally the flan! We were STUFFED. We spent a good three hours in our seats, and could barely walk by the time we left. Our server was so sweet. Absolutely the best Mexican restaurant we've ever gone to. We're not even big flan fans but their flan turned us around. The avocado salad is stupendous. The shrimp tacos are a treasure. If you like drinks, try the Pantera Rosa. The service is top-notch. The atmosphere is relaxed but upbeat, clean, bright and welcoming. The breakfast menu is also exceptional. Worse experience I've ever had IN MY OWN neighborhood. Let just put it this way.. if you look native or local to the neighborhood.. do not go here. They treat certain kind of people better than others, they even treat them better than their own people. A man named George I guess is the manager particularly is blatantly more attentive to this population of people. I had a good experience the first time I went but this time was not cool at all. I was ignored & the service I received was as if my money was not as good as the other people eating there. I asked George if I can move when other diners left and he told me yes but walked away annoyed when I tried to explain to him that my son was sitting on top of a cellar in his stroller(we were outside). Then he told the other diners that there was no rush and they didn't have to go anywhere anytime soon. I was moved and was grateful. After asking a simple question about my order and trying to get the attention of George's and being obviously ignored (even other diners were telling him I was trying to get his attention) I got tired of sitting in the chilly weather with half my order getting cold and my babies order not even certain if it was being made or not. I decided to pay for what I had and leave. I tried to have a conversation with the older Mexican woman (who was nice) about any misunderstanding & the young lady that works there cut me off to let me know if I did not want to stay I can leave. I was not rude or argumentative. When I told her to basically mind her business, she loudly told me don't speak to her walking away in earshot of other diners and basically tried to embarrass me. There is no communication between staff and they don't care to make things right either. The food is not horrible but definitely not worth the mistreatment. Go next door to cascalote. The food is better and they're service is great. Restaurants and eateries in Spanish Harlem need to respect the native and local people of this neighborhood.
