Cinco de Mayo landed on my radar when a bunch of us at work were looking for a place to grab some lunch. We had our usual list of spots in Midtown East, but this time we wanted something a little different. We ultimately landed on Mexican, however even then there were several spots to chose from. One of my colleagues found CdM, and since we had nothing to lose we decided to check it out. In terms of physical space at CdM, there is very little; this is actually a walk-up spot hence it is solely a takeout restaurant. The menu is pretty straightforward - lots of Mexican staples with a good variety to choose from. The burrito bowl looked good so I decided to go with that - I was given choice of protein (I chose pastor) and types of beans (I chose black). The bowl was really good - all the ingredients tasted fresh and they were generous with the portion. They added sour cream to the top of the bowl and it came with a side of salsa verde which I thought was a nice touch. We also ordered some bags of tortilla chips to share - these were my favorite kind as they were semi-thick and super crunchy. Overall, I had a solid experience at Cinco de Mayo. It definitely hit the Mexican craving spot and I would have no qualms returning for another meal. read more

First time here - pretty solid meal with decent pricing as well. I got the cinco de mayo plate which came with beef. Good lunch portion and it was also pretty tasty. Also got guacamole and chips as a side - which was on the smaller side given the price. All in all it's a good lunch option in the city! read more

One word...two languages... DELICIOUS/DELICIOSO! It's a take out restaurant with an amazing authentic Mexican street food menu. I ordered and enjoyed 3 tacos Al Pastor, chips and guacamole. $20 bucks! Great value and taste. Great flavors and also nice service. I was craaaaving Mexican so I yelped while on the East side and "presto", it was Cinco De Mayo . It was take out only so I took the risk of taking it back home even though it was freezing out . I've been wanting to check this place out since I walk by it a lot during lunchtime. There's always a line and people waiting around the (literally) small store front. I wouldn't say that they have the best customer service and that they go out of the way to be super welcoming. However, they are quick with getting your order. The menu is posted outside of their door. I asked what was the most ordered or recommended and was told either the burrito or the birria tacos. I got the burrito bowl, but nowhere did it say that I would get charged extra for a different type of meat. Now I know that chicken is a different price. It is expensive for a small portion size. I don't know if I will be returning. Maybe to try something else on their menu. read more

Such delicious food. I got the birria tacos, 3 for $15. They were packed with flavor and the beef was tender and plentiful. The portion of meat they give you is generous, the tortilla was having trouble holding all the meat. Comes with a salsa verde that helps lighten the savoriness of the meal. Definitely worth a visit to try. I'll most likely be back to have the rest of the menu. It's a hole in the wall type of place so it can be easy to miss, but there's some tables and chairs across the street where you can eat at. The staff seemed nice. By far the best tacos in the city! Unassuming and delicious, the way it should be. Friendly folks, easy to order and short wait times while they cook up your tacos, fresh to order. I tried the steak, and the meat was tender and juicy. Just the right amount of cilantro and onions (you can also opt to get tomatoes, lettuce and guacamole). Tortillas were warm and held up well. Salsa verde on the side. Prices are very reasonable, especially for midtown. No seating. Came during lunch hour and the wait wasn't bad. Will be back to try their carnitas, al pastor and birria tacos. About the closest I can get to fond memories of roadside taco stands growing up in CA and trips to Mexico. No frills hole in the wall with delicious food- no seating- you order, wait on the sidewalk and get your food. Had the tacos as well the nachos... (tasty, no frills, basic mexican food).. The workers are nice and service is pretty fast. Midtown pricing (ie comparatively expensive) but that's super normal for the area. They give you a slice of lime per taco. read more

I've lived in New York for 6 months now, coming from San Antonio where there is a bounty of Tex-Mex and Mexican food. This food lives up to the cravings I experience, it is everything Mexican food should be. No spins or harsh fusions. The service was great and the guy was nice. I mentioned Menudo and Barbacoa and I'm sure if they didn't have to cater to a New York crowd could do those dishes and meats to perfection. This is a sweet little spot with friendly staff and great food. I was not feeling the best and was in desperate need of some comforting chicken soup. I called my order and my soup was ready pretty quick. The soup came with all the appropriate condiments (tortillas, cilantro onions, and spicy chili oil on the side). This place is legit. We stayed at a hotel down the street, so we took a chance because they were in walking distance, the prices were reasonable, and had other good reviews. I think we ordered just about everything on the menu, and a few things that weren't. It was all so good! The portions were generous too. We had a big order, but they got it done quick, while filling other delivery orders. Which is good, because the only option you have is to stand on the sidewalk. On the plus side, you get to see them prepare your food right there. Speaking of the staff, they were accommodating and friendly.
