My wife and I enjoy eating at Mexican Villa every two or three weeks. We went there this afternoon to have a late lunch. We both had the burrito enchilada style when was just about done with mine I bit into a gravel and I thought I broke my tooth, but I actually bit the gravel in half. After I was sure my tooth was OK I asked for a manager. He told me how sorry he was and would investigate and thank me very much for saving that gravel for him. After I thought about it for a while, I thought if would invite somebody over to my house and if they bid into a gravel would I have just said thank you I don't ask for anything, but I sure didnt appreciate his attitude. I got nothing but a weak sorry out of him. Needless to say, I'm not going back there. that ruined my lunch.

I had enchiladas the beef kind because that's all they have and my husband had nachos and then the enchilada.

When we went in we had to wait to be seated for about 15 minutes and there wasn't really anyone in the dining room. The chips that they give you are extremely hard and not homemade. The nachos barely had any cheese on it. I got the beef enchiladas and I did not care for them at all. The food just didn't taste authentic. The salsa was absolutely disgusting I've never seen any Mexicans make salsa like that before and trust me I made a lot of Mexican food. The restaurant was nice and clean but the service wasn't very good at all. Every time I needed my waitress I had to signal her because she barely came over and even asked if we needed anything.

I grew up in Springfield and Mexican Villa is an icon of the city. I now live in San Antonio and can say that this food is straight-up Tex-Mex. It may or may not be your favorite but it's a place full of memory for many Springfieldians. I grew up going to "the Villa" and it was a hang-out for me and my college buddies. Whenever I'm in town, I have to visit along with Leong's for some Springfield Style Cashew Chicken. My favorite dish is the Sancho Enchilada Style. Since we don't have anything like this in San Antonio, I've learned to make it myself but it's never as good as the original. I've noticed that they don't ask whether you want a half or whole portion. It looks like they serve a portion that's halfway in between. It's filling!! I also like their tacos, enchiladas, and tamales. Don't forget that hot sauce. Slather that on your chips and let your nose run! It's hot but has a great roasted flavor that's hard to find elsewhere. I was sad to see that the restaurant wasn't very busy when I visited on a Monday afternoon to visit a friend when I was in from out of town. It did give us a chance to visit without a lot of noise. The waitstaff was pleasant and checked on us once in a while but ignored us after we finished eating. Since the place wasn't busy we stayed a while after we finished eating and I guess we were cut off from tea refills. So that could be improved. Again, I know this place isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the food is decent, the ambiance is nice, a little on the kitschy side, and it's full of memories of my childhood. I'll keep going when I'm in town and hope they continue to stay in business for a long time.

i would never eat here again. worst salsa ive ever had. the food was compared to dog food in my opinion. i was grossed out by my meal. ive been twice (second time for work) and i just cant see why people like the food. if you live in Springfield you either love or hate mexican villa and im on the later side of this. i wont be back to any of their locations. yuck read more

Ok, I have lived in Springfield all of my life and I was raised on Mexican Villa. The one on National is the original and has the best atmosphere. The place seems sanitary but it is very dingy and old. I have seen a few potential health violations in this place though. The lady who talks about the lettuce in the trash is probably right, but what most long time Springfield citizens realize is that this place IS a Springfield legend and we (long time Springfield citizens) will accept them no matter what. I think people born and raised in Springfield have an understanding that this place serves some terrible quality food, but it's the best stuff on this earth for locals. Everything from the watery burrito enchilada style, overly greasy chips, the hot sauce that starts getting REALLY hot after you realize that you ate WAY too much, and even their apple pie with cheese is sooooooo gooooood. If your from out of town, you probably will hate it, but as long as we (Springfield citizens) have it, that's all that matters. read more

*** I LOVE MEXICAN VILLA. *** I LOVE MEXICAN VILLA. *** It is a rare occasion to find a string of family owned businesses - everything is a national chain. This however - is a Springfield SUCCESS STORY. My favorite area in the restaurant is the big diningroom of knotty-pine on the north end of the bldg. I can gaze around that room - looking at different tables and booths and recall 40 years worth of eating at that spot with Ray B....or laughing with Bob B. over there or a birthday party for Flash here and alllllllllllll the familiar voices and smells and tastes make it a wonderful place to return to over and over. Good food - good people. They had one waitress - I think her name was 'MICKEY' - a small, sweet woman - who had been on staff for DECADES. Now if you are looking for a chrome and glass joint - this is NOT the place. (But amongst the other MV locations around town, there are others that sport 'modern decor'.) This restaurant has a 'patina' from years and years of service. If they scrubbed the place too much, it just would not be the same. It is 'clean enough' - so there! (Obviously the Health Dept agrees). The decor includes oodles of figurines of men with Somberos and velvet paintings (of course!) I love the meat enchilada plate...featuring a small lettuce and tomato salad on the side of the plate...and all surrounded by delicious sauce moat. This is truly AMERICANIZED MEXICAN food -- folks 'with an ulcer' could dine upon this 'comfort food'. I have the "T shirt' - I've been known to haul the food home across the state-line...and I yearn for MEXICAN VILLA every time we discuss ethnic meals waaaay down here in Arkansas. (DUH!) Oh yes -- there is a mural on a storage bldg at the edge of the parking lot. It features a lady making some Mexican food. The orig. painting was a fav. of all my friends. The artist must have been a bit cross-eyed as the Mexican lady-in-the-painting -- wellll, her breasts looked like the bumpers on a "53 Caddy; one was pointed left and the other sorta up and to the right. We used to pause on the parking lot - like a ritual - and point, make jokes and laugh. (Was she handicapped - needed a new bra - was there 'an errant magnet field' disrupting the Mexican lady's twin...er...ah... Well, you understand. ) Alas, a new muralist repainted the lady. She no longer offers the remarkable 'attributes' as the earlier version - and heck - it jes' ain't as much fun. NOTHING STAYS THE SAME... read more

I had to absolutely LAUGH OUT LOAD when I read the negative reviews about Mexican Villa. Obviously these people are transplants to Springfield. I started eating at Mexican Villa more than 40 years ago. As all Springfield natives know, you DO NOT go to Mexican Villa to expect, or to eat "Mexican food." You go to Mexican Villa to eat Mexican Villa! It's kind of like Cashew Chicken. It's not authentic "Chinese," per say, but Springfield Cashew Chicken. Mexican Villa is not "authentic" Mexican food, but "Springfield Mexican" food. Get in the Springfield groove people! If you don't like it, don't go. But do not, I repeat, do not badmouth Mexican Villa. It just shows your ignorance of a much-loved Springfield icon. read more

I think they have gone down hill in the last few years. I've been going their for several years. Here of late the food is not as fresh and less portions. It's a shame, this is typical when it's passed down from generations and a grandson of the original owner is clueless. read more

Love it! The burrito enchilada style is the bomb and a must try! The hot sauce is excellent taste but I warn ya it is HOT! request some sweet sauce and mix it a lil. Chips and sauce are free. Me and my wife can get stuffed and for less than $20. read more
