While visiting my family from NYC, I usually swing by for lunch with my dad, seeing as one thing NYC doesn't have except for a few specific spots, it's good *CHEAP* Mexican food. Good "expensive as F***" is, as usual with NYC, easy enough to find. Anyway... They apparently recently remodeled the place, at least doubling the amount of space within the past few months. We went in, sat down, and something that I miss from here in Texas was served to us; free chips and salsa! That is a... VERY rare concept in NYC. Here they bring salsa, queso, and some... carrots / celery combo soaked in vinegar I think that I really like. We were going to get regular lunch specials ($7.00 to $9.50) but then my dad noticed a board close to the front. We went and looked and they had two lunch specials for a very expensive... $5. One was a chicken enchilada with beef chalupa, refried beans and yellow rice, which is what I got, my dad got the other one "2 soft tacos, beans and rice." Between the chips I had, I could not finish my meal. I took the beef chalupa home. My dad didn't stuff himself like I did, so he could finish his food. We were quite pleased with the food; not gourmet, but not bad by any stretch of the imagination, and... it's a measly $5 USD. You get "street vendor food" for that in NYC, whereas here you get a sit down table, free chips and salsa, complete with refill of said chips (they charge you back in NYC), and a full plate of food. This place offers insanely good deals for what I'd say is decent quality food; take advantage of it if you're around for lunch. In the past I recall having a giant bowl of soup, bone in chicken with... cobs of corn, with rice and beans on the side. That really hit the spot as well, but if you don't like bone-in meat... avoid. I also asked about the "margaritas $.99c" in the photo I uploaded; it looked like an 8 oz. glass, maybe 10, not some thimble-sized switcharoo that I've run into before, where I refused to pay for it and gave it back and caused a scene. If they don't skimp on the tequila, and I'm not going to bug someone about the ratio of tequila to other ingredients during the lunch rush ... that special looks *DANGEROUS* :P read more

Horrible....Cheese was MOLDED, and tasted DISGUSTING! We had to wait more than 20 minutes for our food, the service wasn't amazing. The atmosphere had a little girl screaming and crying, which was noisy and annoying. We couldn't eat our food here and we aren't going again as it was just plain out awful. read more

My family has been ordering out from this restaurant for years and the last couple times we have the price has gone up and the food given has gone way down. Usually we wouldn't mind spending $15 on carne asada fries that use to be ten but then again this box use to come packed where you couldn't see the bottom with out eating a little bit. The bad reviews must be from negative folks or folks that just hit them on a "bad day". I've not ever had a bad experience. The folks are nice, and the food is good. Sure the prices have bumped a little bit, but thanks to runaway inflation, everything has gone up. My usual wait time is about 10 minutes, if they are busy it's 15. They don't advertise to be "fast food", but face it, if you go to Whataburger, you'll sit for 20 minutes as well. These folks have a great product and friendly service. I go whenever I'm back in town, which is a few times a month. Don't pay attention to the bad reviews, unfounded and/or rare "off day" for the place. read more

I hate writing this, but be prepared for a LONG wait if you order food here. It took them over 30 minutes to make 4 breakfast burritos. I was in food service for close to 10 years, and honesty goes a long way. So, if you are super busy and your customers are going to have to wait then you need to let them know ahead of time. The prices have also gone way up even with inflation in mind, it's a little ridiculous...close to $40 for 4 breakfast burritos! The food is good, but don't think you'll be able to get it quickly in the drive thru!!! This is my go to Mexican restaurant. They have a good array of options and the food is good. They also have 2 or 3 dollar frozen margaritas. (I forget) If they could improve on something I'd say adding maybe a strawberry marg. They only have lime and maybe add some background music to help with the ambience. read more

I do not complain a lot but as someone who has been a regular customer here for years, today I was treated very poorly over something that was not my fault. The Hispanic lady misunderstood my wife's call in order, we ordered two burritos. Somehow she misunderstood that to be six. I got to the window, picked,it,up and realized this bag is way too big. I nicely tell them, and the lady at the window became very very rude almost yelling saying she repeated the order to my wife. My wife said when she called the lady had a hard time understanding her. She refused to apologize and kept saying my wife was wrong. I asked to speak to the manager who came to the window, he never apologized, was very unprofessional and said his worker repeated the order and my wife was wrong. I told him, nicely, I didn't appreciate the rudeness and just wanted it corrected or a refund and I asked for the owners name, he refused and gave me my card back and slammed the window. I called back and got the same "manager" who refused to give me the owners name. My wife and I were customers for years but we will not be back. Nachos, chili relino, crispy tacos and chalupas are favorites. For breakfast the pancakes are better than any I've had in this town. I get mine to go so I have no experience with dine in. I haven't tried the whole menu so the above is all I can speak for. Wish they would update the menu on yelp because it's four years old. read more

Affordable, and very tasty. I have a little Litmus test when it comes to ethnic food places: are there people of that nationality in the restaurant? If so, you're off to a good start. At Mexico Express there were quite a few Latinos, so I felt pretty sure of the product. Turns out, I was right. We had a lunch special, and my fajita bowl was very good. It had some sauce I'd never seen before, but tasted OK. The chicken flautas were also good, and you can't beat complimentary chips and salsa (also a tell-tale sign of a decent Mexi joint). They have a drive thru, which is useful because the space is pretty small. There are not a lot of big tables, and any group over 4 would be hard pressed to fit. I'm addicted to carne asada from growing up in San Diego and having taco shops around every corner. There, the carne asada is fairly consistent in style (though quality varies) and this Taqueria Mexico Express is similar (right color, seasoning, grilling and not too wet) and excellent quality. I have a hard time finding carne asada burritos that I like outside of San Diego so I was thrilled to find this place and I have been coming back ever since! I just have to tell them to hold the beans and then add guac and pico then they are perfect. (They also come with cheese so I leave that in too.) To me, beans, rice and lettuce are just fillers and have no place in a burrito. I also like the large carne asada quesadilla though I have to tell them not to cut it up and I add guac and ask them to put it inside for me. I'm from San Antonio and work in Lufkin and this is my go to at least 2 to 3 times per week. The breakfast tacos are excellent, but the breakfast parrillada is a belly filler. It is loaded with hash browns, onions, cheese, ham, bell peppers, cilantro, salsa and 3 eggs and tortillas. On a good day, I can eat 3/4 of the humongous serving they give you. For lunch and sometimes for breakfast, I'm a diehard al pastor taco guy and they have the best ones I have tasted. I get mine with cilantro, onion and avacado and they are stuffed full. Their beer is super cold and all the ladies there are very friendly. I haven't eaten at a lot of places in Lufkin, but this is in my top 3. read more
