Today I was searching for Taiwanese rice vinegar. When I was about to give up, I found it in the vinegar isle, not the Asian sauce isle, like I would have suspected! New Sagaya Midtown has a fantastic selection of all things one might need to make some killer Asian or Mexican dishes and I love coming here for that. The main downside is that they are expensive, typically in the L48 stores like Uwajimaya and Hmart are cheaper than Safeway/QFC but that is simply not the case here. The store is relatively clean and well lit, there is no funky odor which is greatly appreciated. The cashier is always quick, but that's the extent of the service I have received at the store. I will keep coming back when I need to find a special ingredient to keep exploring the culinary world.

I slipped in the parking lot (rookie mistake--no spikes on my shoes for the icy ground). After two kind gentlemen helped me up, I walked inside with my spilled coffee. If you go around noon it's all freshly made and always very reasonably priced. The curry is bone-in pieces which makes me less of a fan; but that's how it is in Thailand, so you know it's authentic! Give them a try and leave some fresh rolls for me. ;)

We were chatting and watching her make the banh mi, and it just looked so satisfying to see her cutting the bread and see the steam rising. Perfectly toasted outside, fluffy inside, stuffed with meats and fillings. The bánh mì thit người was savory, with hints of sweetness, spice, and pickles veggies. You can request to not have those in the sandwhich, but all the flavors really meld together into a delicious experience. She sells tons of drinks there. We tried her Viet coffee, and her's is very rich and has a deep sweet flavor to it (be careful not to drink too late in the day if you're sensitive to caffeine). There's also a large variety of tropical fruit like longan, lychee, baby mango, mangosteen, etc. I highly recommend anyone who wants to eat Viet food, try interesting specialty drinks, or just wants to support small local businesses to check out her store.
