Two of us ate here on a weekday afternoon, we were literally the only people in the huge main seating area. My friend wanted to try this place because she saw they have a vegetarian menu, unlike a lot of Mexican joints. I ordered cheese enchiladas and refried beans. The waiter came out holding our plates with oven mitts and warned us they would be hot, which was strange because my enchiladas ranged from lukewarm to cold depending on which bite of them I was eating. They tasted nice -- in fact I rather liked the sauce -- but the temperature was a turnoff. (I didn't say anything to the staff because I was halfway through before I discovered the *really* cold bits and I didn't want them going to the trouble of remaking the plate.) The refried beans were pretty good but not great. This is a very nice place, clean, festively decorated, with lots of choices on the menu -- but honestly in a town with scores of excellent authentic mom-n-pop Mexican food outlets, it's not a spot I would personally choose to visit again. But if you like Chi-Chi's, Felipe's, and other joints where the fare is more Tex than Mex, this might be your jam. Service, by the way, was EXCELLENT. Very nice people. The service on the to-go orders is horrible. They ALWAYS get the order wrong or have something missing. I've had to go back multiple times and they act clueless or have an attitude for a mistake they made. There can be 5 people in front and not one person will attend you. Very good ambiance and well-decorated! The covered seating area gives a romantic vibe. Got some chicken fajitas and they were very tasty. This was my first time at this restaurant. There was a dead medium-sized roach on the floor next to our table that was overlooked by both the hostess and server. When we brought it to the attention of our server, he tried to sweep it under the door. I ordered a cheese enchilada and a chalupa from the lunch menu. The enchilada was a rolled up tortilla with unmelted cheese shreds inside. There was no red sauce. The soggy bean chalupa was buried under wilted lettuce and oxidized, brown guacamole. Pros: The food is solid; if you've been to El Agave, Los Cocos, Playa Azul or any of the other larger, sit-down casual Mexican restaurants in town, you know what to expect--and you'll recognize the furniture. The complementary chips and salsa were fine, the menu was large but not overwhelming and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. This is a white queso-friendly establishment, which, while not considered overly "authentic" by some, is my jam. I got the chicken Chimichangas and the portion was large, flavorful and tastefully glazed in cheese sauce with standard rice/beans/salad sides. My husband got a Hawaiian-inspired chicken/shrimp dish with pineapple that came with beans with sausage (the names slip my mind) that he was very pleased with. There's a small but intentional vegetarian menu for those looking for more veg beyond the usual salad. Prices are great and still feel almost pre-pandemic, with quite a few meals under $10. Wait staff was friendly, though we had to wait a little bit longer to flag him down to get our check. Cons: We went on a Sunday night and it was surprisingly loud. There is no sound dampening in the building and with loud music and two large parties in the big room with us, we couldn't hear ourselves think. Luckily, I have earplugs in my purse, which helped, but after an exhausting week and weekend, this atmosphere was too much for us and we had to leave earlier than we wanted. People without noise sensitivities may find it fun and energizing, so take this review with a grain of salt. Overall, we enjoyed our food and would like to go back with our friends to try their table side guac, but I'm a little hesitant since I'm not sure what the noise level is at any given point. Decided to give this place a try. Very busy and happening place. The waitress was okay and not so friendly. Service could improve. Chips were cold and stale and we had to ask for fresh ones. I like that they prepare guacamole in front of you and you choose what you want in it. Made fresh and tasty. I tried their pollo poblano and the chicken and vegetable was tasty except for the sauce in it was salty. They give you plenty of meat for the beef fajita. Pricing is great. Large portion meals. Food was just fine. The service is what got us. We ordered the lunch burritos ( this was lunch time) and literally pointed at it while ordering. Got the bill and was questioning where an extra $8 was coming from. The server said, oh you got dinner not lunch plates. I said "that's not what we told you we wanted and we showed you on the menu what we wanted." Well he didn't want to make it right by changing the bill nor even apologize for getting it wrong. My son ordered a side of guacamole for his meal and we were charged for a dip (4.50). The more I think about the place the more angry I get. Seeing the good reviews is very deceiving. The waitress staff was wonderful and patient but the manager and quality of food was poor. The food was soggy. The chili relleno was inedible. The alcohol beverages were not up to par for the price. The restaurant was nice and not too loud. Tons of space. We had no wait for our large group of 11. But No one was able to finish their food and everyone woke up feeling a tad sick. When trying to ask for help we were blown off by the manager that didn't care at all. Thank goodness for the nice waitress who explained the new kitchen staff. Not that it helped the situation. Half of us were from out of town and the other half lives in town. No one will be returning to this place. Word of advice. Dont order anything you'd like to be crunchy. Be sure to have silverware for everything bc nothing can be picked up like it should be. (tostada, quesadilla, or hard taco) Dont order anything from the specialty drink menu bc you will not get what you pay for. Unless it's bottled beer. We've been eating at Mexico Viejo for years. Always great food, great service, and very affordable. A few years ago we were getting sick after our meals. Stopped going for a few years (during the pandemic). Began going again last year 2023 and everything was back to normal. I adore the manager Saul, such a sweetheart. Our servers Jamie, Cesar, Lahlo, Olga...(I know I'm missing a few names) are wonderful people. If your meal or beverage isn't what you expected, tell your server and they'll make it right. If you like alcoholic drinks, theirs are very good and very reasonable $. We tend to eat there more often on the weekdays as "quiet" (birthdays, etc, can get pretty noisy). Note: This review will only be over food and service as I did not dine in. I was on the west side of town and wanted to pick up some fast Mexican food. Mexico Viejo was the first to show up on my Google search and it had fairly good reviews. I gave them a call, and a nice gentleman answered and took my order. There was a little confusion here and there but things turned out alright after I asked for him to confirm my order. Again, I'm not sure what's up with me and the rain but it was raining pretty badly on my way to the restaurant. The parking lot was PACKED, which in a way was reassuring. I walked in and was welcomed by the workers at the front. One of them gave me my order. After paying, I turned around to see the door already held open for me by one of the workers. They all smiled and told me to have a nice day. What great service! I ordered one tamale because I knew I was going to be full from my other order. The tamale itself was yummy, but the ground beef and sauce that covered it diminished the taste of the shredded pork, and not in a good way either. Overall I didn't enjoy it too much. The flautas were tasty, but not as crunchy as I wanted. Not only that, the shell did not blanket the meat very well which made the meat fall very easily. It was sloppy. It was filling and flavorful nevertheless. The price was definitely unbeatable due to the service and food portion. I can totally see why they receive a lot of love from locals. read more

I don't know what the problem was but on Sunday Sept 1, had to wait 15 minutes to order and at least another 50 minutes for the food, even though other who arrived after us were already eating. Forgot one drink and my wife had to go to the bar to complain since the waitress was not to be found.
