My first time coming here was last weekend on Saturday 12/9 around 1pm. Since I'm vegetarian I had a question about one of the sandwiches, the girl who was making my sandwich was very rude and was bothered that I was asking something? I know there is a line but I had never been there before and I wanted to see what sandwich options I had available for my diet. The sandwich making girl was short, dark tan skin and curly hair and had a huge attitude. I felt scared to even ask anything else and just ordered something random because of how much pressure I was getting from her. I couldn't hear what she was asking me since it's loud there and I think she was even more bothered because I asked her to repeat herself. I tried to give this place another chance by going again on Monday morning for breakfast to eat a burrito but unfortunately I bit on something extremely hard. When I went to look at what it was it was the stem of the avocado that had not been taken out. I'm really disappointed in not only my service but with the food at this place. I'm a student here and will be for the next two years and I dont want to avoid coming here since it's so popular. read more

I hate salads and I hate bread but I love Mezzo. Go figure. Massive portions. Maybe that's what wins me over. It also doesn't hurt that the salads have heaping amounts of toppings, which I'm all about You get a literal fistful of everything on the salad and a big ole lump o' protein for $13. The tuna salad is p good. Tofu is also p good though kinda sweet for me. The sandwiches are also massive and served on bread that I actually approve of. That honey wheat is pretty bomb. The vegan chili was just okay. It was more soupy than chili-y and very tomato-y and acidic. Could have just been an off day but I'm not itching to order again. At least not in summer. The potato and leek soup was great though. P salty when you got further into it but if I'm being honest, I like a p sodium filled soup (take note, Trader Joe's). The people who work here are so damn nice and helpful. A real find for the Bay Area. My friend did point out that it would do them some good to have trays for people as it took us 5 trips back and forth from our table to the register to get all our food and beverages. Back to the portions, the salads EASILY serve 2 people in one serving making it a mega affordable meal if you can find someone to agree on the dressing with. Mezzo is a cute place to get lunch with friends. There's a ton of seating inside, and outside as well. There is usually a line to order, but it goes by fast. The portion sizes are huge. For lunch, I usually get just a sandwich, or a sandwich/salad combo. The sandwich/salad combo lasts me two meals. Everything tastes super fresh. I recommend the blta for sandwiches and poppy seed dressing for the salads. Lately I've been stopping by in the mornings for their breakfast burrito (ends at 11am). I don't know where you can get a better breakfast burrito in Berkeley, so Mezzo is my current fave. Mezzo is my go to place for a healthy and tasty meal! read more

Mezzo! Aka "my secret garden" aka the "new cafe intermezzo" This place hits home for me... The original "Cafe Inter'Mezzo'" was one of my favorite places in the bay to get a good salad, a good BIG salad! Mezzo keeps the classic feel of the old spot that burned down with a little piece of my heart 7ish years ago with there giant salad, their delicious honey wheat, and the House dressings they serve. The employees are all students, so be specific with your orders and cut the kids some slack. They're just trying to work for some beer money. The Chef salad with Poppyseed/blue cheese was always my favorite combo, and it still is! Buy a loaf of bread for $8 or some "bread ends" for a buck. There's a bar attached to Mezzo as well which is even more of a bonus for your late lunch sessions. Definitely check this place out. It's good for you! Much more worth it than a sweetgreen. I came for dinner and ordered an absolutely incredible filling, nutritious, and fresh salad. The greens dressed in the the Greek yogurt green goddess piled up with tomatoes, sprouts, your choice of protein (I had turkey), a hard boiled egg, avocado, and beans and chickpeas was honestly one of the heartiest and prettiest salads I have ever had. Plus for the amount given--the price of 13.5 really doesn't feel that bad (especially in comparison to other salad shops) as they also include a HEFTY chuck of wheat bread and a side of watermelon. I didn't order the sandwich, but it seemed they had a large amount of breading...but can't speak to that personally. Ambiance is also quite casual, nice and laid back. I ordered a Delight Salad, ($9.50) and I do have to say, it was dam tasty. You could tell the ingredients were fresh, and honestly even the salad was super crisp. Yummy. If I come again, I will definitely get the COMBO: because you can choose two out of the three (salad, sandwich, or soup). In my opinion, it was a little too expensive for a salad.... Portions are huge! Great to split a salad with someone else. I like coming here for a healthy dinner, but always leave feeling full and satisfied unlike other times I'll decide to have salad for dinner. Still delicious after all these years! I, and the rest of Berkeley, have been eagerly awaiting the re-opening of the old Intermezzo since it was announced they would rebuild after the fire. While the physical appearance is quite different - industrial modern with lots of light wood to warm the vibe, large windows with tons of natural light and views of Telegraph - and it is larger with ample space indoors and on the patio, the food is what you want and expect: BIG salads that would make Elaine Benes proud, full of delicious, fresh ingredients, homemade dressings (their poppyseed has been my fave for over 20 years) the huge slices of honey wheat bread with sunflower seeds...all just as I remember. They also have a nice sandwich selection, soup, and hot/cold beverages (including espresso drinks). Excellent prices for generous portions of healthy, delicious food, whether you're a student on a budget, an out-of-town visitor, or a Cal alum who never left Berkeley and loves remembering the good times! Delicious fare! I got the Veggie Delight salad for $10.50 pre-tax, which was enormous and came with an extremely yummy slice of bread and a sweet chunk of pineapple. The dressing I got (Herb Vinaigrette) was subtle and perfect for a salad chock-full of all of my favorite fresh ingredients--avocado, sprouts, tomato, beans, carrots, cabbage...My meal was filling and the ambience is great. There are some really cool murals inside, and the outdoor patio features string lights and some cute wooden tables! On top of that they force you to tip when completing the transaction. Well there is no table service, you have to boss your own table as well, so why am I tipping? How bizarre would it be if you are forced to tip the cashier at Wholefoods? That is how it felt. Oh guess what? They also had a tip jar by the cashier; then why include it when completing the transaction? I don't get it. You either want cash in your store or you don't? Which is it?(Remember the reason given for no cash?). Didn't like the inconsistency. Also the girl who helped us was really stingy. She cheated us on tomatoes, beans, sprouts, cucumber (I literally had 2 slices of cucumber in my salad) etc. I had to ask: may I get more of this and more of that??.....I saw what others who were ahead of us got (same item: Veggie delight), so she obviously was being cheap today. Which brings me back to the whole forced tipping issue. I didn't like the service I got, so why am I forced to tip? Let customers decide if they want to tip. My sister took me to Mezzo and it was delicious! I got the half roast beef sandwich with honey wheat toast and added Swiss cheese and half a salad with poppyseed dressing. The sandwich was amazing because of the toast, it was soft and a perfect amount of sweet. It went very well with the roast beef. I loved the salad because they did not skimp out on the cherry tomatoes (my favorite)! The drinks were great too, the jasmine elderflower kombucha was really refreshing. The people working there touch all the food with their gloved hands. But they also touch their hair, masks, pants and other items as they move around. The gloves don't make it more hygienic. I even saw one guy carrying a bowl of soup with his gloved thumb dipped in the bowl of soup. What else did he dip in the soup after touching everything else? Then when I finally did pay for my food there was nowhere to sit because all the tables had food and dishes left from previous customers. The location is great it's not to far from where I work. The inside is clean and welcoming, the lighting is mainly from the outside. I ordered the roast beef and BPHB I think that's that it's called. Both are very good. They don't skimp you on the food for what your paying One thing that I don't like about the place. When your ordering your food, the barrier between you and the food is very small. From what I saw, other customers would move their hand point or inch forward, leaning towards the food. Also some would rest their arms on the counter above the food as they are waiting for their food. The glass also doesn't go all the way down where the food is. I saw a kid poke his hand underneath touching parts of the cheese, made me cringe. As a person who is a geomorphic when it comes to my food I don't want people who aren't handling my food to be near it. TLDR: Food is good. Swung by the very next day I heard they had opened and yet I'm still somewhat in disbelief that they're back. I've checked in from time to time during these past several years to search online for the latest on their return not knowing whether what I was reading was legit or just rumors. In the meantime, I searched high and low for something similar but to no avail. Others who have never been were baffled by my efforts and my loyalty to this place. I'm sure they wondered who gets excited for salads and quite frankly I didn't blame them. You had to have gone and tasted it to know. A Veggie Delight with Poppy Seed Dressing, a BLTA and a strawberry fresca for under $18 and some change (in cash, CC was not accepted then) was my husband and I's go-to and was nervous how much Mezzo could have decided to change things. We headed out first thing Sunday. No website yet (at least one that was published), no phone number was listed so we took our chances and arrived by the time the cafe had opened for the day. It was surprising to see prices have only slightly changed and was overjoyed the honey wheat bread still had the same familiar taste. I did notice immediately sliced tomatoes were used in my salad instead of cherry tomatoes that I was used to seeing. The BLTA was EXACTLY the same as I remembered it and was delicious. But the strawberry fresca was nowhere to be found on the drink menu but no matter. The important thing is my beloved Veggie Delight is back! read more

Now this is what I call a salad. When I came here around noon, I was horrified by the long line stretching out the door. Who waits 15 minutes for a salad?? When I came into view of the salad bar, though, I understood. Everyone would wait 15 minutes for THAT MUCH salad. The Chef's Salad, which is $12, features heaps of veggies, chickpeas, egg, avocado, bread, and your choice of protein and dressing. I got the chicken salad, which was essentially a salad within a salad (saladception!), with the poppyseed dressing. On first bite, it didn't seem like the sauce had been mixed in that well, but the chicken salad was flavorful enough on its own. I got through maybe half of the salad before the fullness smacked me with the force of wrecking ball and I had to sit back in my chair and rub my stomach, then get a to-go box (about 1/2 the size of the boxes they use when people order Chef's Salad to go) for the sake of my own sanity. I was seriously afraid of turning green from eating so many vegetables in one meal. Still, I managed to get in a couple bites of the bread and was pleasantly surprised. There was a tinge of sweetness, and it's nice and chewy. I don't get why they cut it so thick, though. It's essentially three slices of bread in one. I like everything I've tried, but I wish the quantity would go down just a tinyy bit (portions are crazy huge) and the quality go up a bit (better lettuces? more veg variety?). I hate the feeling seeing the employees dig into the ingredient piles like they are slopping hogs. I don't see gloves get changed much and employees used gloved hands to wipe off counter than next to grab ingredients. My #1 complaint is the wooden bowls used to mix peoples salads are nested together and don't appear to be washed with much regularity - it just doesn't look hygienic. Finally... FINALLY somebody who knows how to make a proper salad. The pictures are hard to capture the actual size of the salads. However, if you've ever seen a punch bowl, that hopefully adds perspective. The cost is perfect: $9.5 These salads have everything--a whole egg, some beans, half an avocado, and a substantial mix of greens and tons of veggies. How odd, in Berkeley, a majority of "salads" can easily be mistaken for run-of-the-mill hamburger toppings (iceberg lettuce, onions, tomatoes). Come to Mezzo hungry or don't come at all. Fair warning. When I was in college a few years ago, I remember this place and its neighboring business, Rally's, burned to the ground before I even knew what it was. Both are back with a fierce vengeance. Not into salads? That's cool (weirdo), you can also get the biggest sandwich you've ever, ever. Let's not mistake size for the hype--the food is both delicious and well-portioned. For a third option, they also have delicious rotating soups. And it's an honorary mention to point out they also have avocado toast as well as breakfast burritos. For a beer, just putter across to Rally's. The ale house and the salad joint can't be crossed interchangeably as the two businesses are connected inside and both lead to a patio with lots of games like corn hole, and bocce ball. So far, the only downside is the awful music. I feel like I'm shopping at the Gap. It's one long standard male pop song after the next, with notes of a popdriven-hip-hop chores. Huge portions and quality food~ I can see why there is always a line here. Came with my sister around 2 PM, although it was past lunch time, the line was pretty long. They do have a lot of staff working, so line went by pretty quickly. The restaurant is pretty small with not much seating, but I like how you can get the orders to go. They have various sandwich and salad choices. I got the chicken salad sandwich ($10.50) and my sister got the side salad ($6.95). Boy the portions are super huge~ The slices of bread were super thiccc, love how they stuffed veggies, chicken salad, tomatoes, and mayo. Ingredients were fresh, the chicken salad wasn't overly salty. I barely finished half of the sandwich. The salad portion is huge too. Stafff is friendly and work fast. I was dying to eat at the Mezzo in person!! I walked inside and fell in love with the interior design of the shop; very open space and a huge patio out back. I ordered a half turkey sandwich and with a small Thai Chicken Udon soup. The sandwich was good and filled me up real quick! But I was really disappointed with my soup. It only had like 2 udon noodles with NO CHICKEN AT ALL; I felt like I was drinking cheap water with random chunks of veggies that didn't mesh together. Even though my soup wasn't the best, I still really enjoyed the atmosphere and vibe of the shop. There was a wide age range of people, from a student on the high tops studying with a huge salad to an elderly couple sipping on tea and sharing a cookie. The biggest highlight for me was the outdoor patio; it was so big and not that crowded at all. After 5 PM, it becomes at 21+ area (not sure what can I drinks they serve). ​ If you are looking for a solid sandwich that will make you full (to save money you should get a full sandwich and split it with a friend), you should definitely come here! The wonderfully huge and tasty salads that were affordable was gone, but now the 2.0 version is amazing. I would suggest calling in and getting it to go, unless you feel like dining in. There will be a line whenever you go, but worth it. I got the veggie combo and a sandwich for my boyfriend and it was exactly like before. HUGE salads for a cheap price (SF salad places are 15+) whereas here, it is $9.50. Sadly, I do not live near campus anymore, so I would not go as often now, but if I am in the area, I make sure to call in and pick it up without the wait. Thankfully, the servers are very efficient and it moved quickly. + Veggie delight salad: Excellent choice of toppings & all ingredients tasted fresh. However, there weren't enough toppings to keep up with the endless greens, so it got boring after a while. He was excited for the salad. When we arrived at around 5:30 it was pretty busy. We ordered one chef salad and one chicken salad sandwich to share. The sandwich was 9.50 and the chef salad was 12.5. For the sandwich you pick bread and cheese and also have additional add ons for free. I picked chicken salad on honey wheat and added extra red onions. It also came with a small slice of watermelon. My boyfriend ordered the chef salad with half turkey and half ham. Great choice. He got the lime vinegrette which was pretty light.
