I was passing through Sunset Park and hadn't eaten since breakfast. I saw an Ecuadorian spot near the train, but it had a B grade, so I passed. Defeated, that only made me want Ecuadorian food even more. I began a mission to get a plate of llapingachos (mashed potatoes laced with cheese and topped with peanut sauce, a typical dish in the Cuenca/Azogues area of Ecuador.) Yelp did not fail me. I walked south and found this place just after some scaffolding. I sat down and was promptly given a menu. Llapingachos are usually eaten with fritada (fried pork) or hornado (roast pork, like pernil.) Them I saw guatita (tripe with peanut sauce) and was almost lead astray and said to myself, No, you came here for llapingachos and llapingachos you shall have. The menu had pictures and I even saw a plate pairing them with steak and eggs. It was a hard decision, but I went with that. The waitress brought out green sauce, called ají in Colombia (not sure what it's called in Ecuador.) my husband ordered the bandeja paisa, a Colombian dish. I waited in trepidation, as I was starving at this point. The food came and I was unsure what to go for first. The meat, the llapingachos, the fried eggs, the salad, or the rice. I gave each a turn. What I love about Ecuadorian cooking, is that there's often a variety of foods on one plate. I hadn't had this plate in ages, so this was a real treat. I wasn't feeling 100% today, so the meal was hearty, yet had nothing to upset my stomach. It turned out to be just the right thing for me. My husband enjoyed his meal, though it was a riff on the traditional plate. They left out the area yet added a few pieces of pork on the bone. He seemed to enjoy his meal. I'd go back. In fact, a personal obligation will require me to be back in the neighborhood in a few days and now I have a little spot to go to that I can trust. I might just try the guatita this time. read more

A local friendly family restaurant. Came here on a Saturday afternoon, they are busy. We ordered mango smoothie, land and sea platter, half a chicken, lamb stew and empanadas. The mango smoothie was delicious. The land and sea platter was ok, the meats are well seasoned but it was a bit dry. Lamb stew was tasty. The chicken was very flavorful and moist. The empanadas was a bit oily and dry for me. I will definitely come back to try the smoothie and chicken again. read more

Food was decent but they have a problem with online ordering apps. They signed up for food ordering apps but when you get there, they don't know about it. No habla English there. I came here for lunch on a Saturday with a group of 5 people. I just moved to the neighborhood and wanted to check out all the restaurants. In Sunset Park, there's a lot of Mexican and Peruvian restaurants. Ecuadorian restaurants seem pretty rare in NYC. We ordered a chicken empanada, a beef empanada, half chicken with plantains (can only order whole chicken for takeout), goat stew over rice, and the land and sea platter (grilled steak, chicken, fish, shrimp, plantains, rice, beans). We also ordered the mango and guanabana (soursop) shakes. The portions were large. I really enjoyed the chicken, goat stew, and the land and sea platter. I liked the goat stew the most. The mango shake was tasty as well. The empanadas were a bit too greasy for me. The service was a bit slow so I took off a star for that. I am going to say, never judge a restaurant by only one meal. I walked into this restaurant, it is a complete Ecuadorian Food Restaurant. It was full, I was able to find a small table empty. I order the #1 Cazuela de Mariscos soup and it was a delicious and an amazing eating experience. The soup is a bit thick not watery as most soups, the flavor and taste was more than what I was expecting, they put cilantro in it, and I am such a lover of cilantro. There was about 5 different types of fish is the soup, baby octopus, baby crap, shrimps, squids, and clams. Served with rice and some really good seasoned shredded red onions. The Mango juice tasted just like a real pure Mango. I have to say, if One comes to Brooklyn, the #1 is a must taste. read more

Been relying on this restaurant for take out. I the roast chicken is amazing and just enough seasoning to give it some umpf, moist, no fat left on the skin. I usually buy a whole chicken which yields about four meals. I am not a fan of fried empanadas, however, Castillo's beef empanadas are light and moist. The you don't need any sauce. You can the ceviche, fresh and tasty. You cannot put down the fork and the camarones al ajillo are second to none. Don't let the simplicity of the decor fool you or this joint is a gem. read more

I got takeout at this place for the first time today with my Mexican friend, who's frequented it before and grew up in Sunset Park. I got the Bistec Encebollado, and my friend got the Corvina al Ajillo. There was so much food for the price! Each of us got a circle tin of salad, the meat, rice, a coffee cup of beans, and salsa verde. The flavors were great. I would actually say the food was almost too salty, but it was delicious anyway. I've always wonder what ceviche tasted like? Will I love it? Will I hate it? What else do they have to offer? what is salchipapas? What's guatita? All these were the type of questions I asked at this Ecuadorian castle. Not only did I eat all of the above mentioned, but I must say that, this place has a very nice warm and homey staff. This is were I ate ceviche for the first time. It was really good and yummy. The sauce was on point, the shrimps were plump and flavorful. The next time I go I will try the guatita the beef tripe. Salchipapas,on the other hands is something I had before, it's basically french fries with fried sausage,but instead of potatoes, for us Dominicans, it would be plantains or tostones with fried salami. I am commenting on the lunch special I ordered the roast chicken rice and bean+ soup lunch special takeaway. I don't speak spanish, so I had a big problem communicating with the staff. The service is much quicker than any other takeaway places, got my food in less than 3 minutes!! I love this place. It's probably one of the things I'll miss the most about no longer commuting to Brooklyn for work. To be fair and honest, I have only ever ordered the arroz con pollo and it's so good and such a large portion for the price. It reminds me a lot of my moms arroz con pollo which I haven't had in a really long time. I've only ordered delivery and they take about 25-30 mins to deliver but the food is still nice and hot. I will definitely be ordering again before my last day in Brooklyn. read more

Love love love this place! Great food at a great price! The staff is always friendly even though there is somewhat of a language barrier but they haven't messed up my order yet. Free wifi. Everything is very fresh. The beans could be tastier. The restaurant is small but it's comfortable and clean although the bathroom could be cleaner. Food was okay, not the best I've had better Ecuadorian food but the service was the worst. My mother and I walked into the restaurant to place a take out order and the lady at the cashier (the host) was extremely rude. It seemed like she did not want to answer our questions and did not want to take our order. When were trying to decide she was annoyed and the whole time she had an attitude. We did not do anything to her so I have no idea where the attitude came from. Definelty will not be going back due to the rude service. Customers should not be treated this way. 3.49 stars never having had ecuadorian food before, i bombarded the very patient server, with a barrage of questions. que es esto? es mas como una tortilla o un a arepa? well, i can now tell you that the LLAPINGACHO was like neither tortillas, nor arepas, it was like either a mashed potato pancake or a mashed potato pancake, and a pretty good tasting mashed potato pancake AKA llapingacho at that. i ordered the llapingacho con carne which of course was llapingacho with a tasty grilled hanger steak and two fried eggs on top. this montage is fairly similar to other south american foods, but it was drizzled with a peanut sauce and i'd never had steak and eggs in that context. i might add that this came with slices of perfectly creamy avocado, and that the meat was juicy and tender. the senor sin suerte ordered a guanabana batido; the batido was nothing to write home about. my coffee, hit the spot. the name of the restaurant is rather funny because, castillo means castle, and this place is more along the lines of rustic or campesino. we'll be back to try the camarones al ajillo and perhaps the sopa de pata. read more
