It's your typical buffet style Spanish/Dominican take away lunch counter with some tables if you're looking to sit down. On my last visit, I got an order of pernil with yellow rice and beans, a chicken leg, and plantains. The total came out to $18 and was enough to knock out 2 people with food left over. The pernil is tender and juicy and the drippings add so much flavor to the rice underneath. The chicken legs are literally fall-off-the-bone good. I than told her excuse me because she was in my way and keep staring me down. I looked at her the same and told her we are making a line. She got mad and told me I have a nasty attitude. I didn't say anything and proceeded to order. The counter lady because she knows her puts me in blast and tells me we don't make lines here. I said absolutely everyone was making lines before she came now all of a sudden you don't make lines. To be professional and keep things in order it would be common sense to make a line. We can avoid arguments like this. The lady behind me then proceeded to call me names and told me she didn't do anything and called me stupid. I told her you got mad because I gave you the same look after you stood there looking at me the same way. The counter lady told me listen don't fight here she didn't do anything to you. I told her it's between me and the lady not to get in it because she should be more professional not because she knows the Dominican lady she should treat me any less. This is a Spanish fast food place with a strong flavor and great pragmatism. Their atmosphere is lacking but it's more than made up for by the authentic and delicious food, very fair price and healthy portion size. And it's also great that most of the staff speaks working English, which is great for how authentic the cuisine is. On multiple occasions my wife and I bought some rice combos to eat on the way to work and they hit the spot every time. Rotisserie chicken over brown rice This is my go to order. The chicken is always tender and juicy, especially if you ask for dark meat. The white meat is pretty good too, but you have to be realistic. It's still white meat. Oxtail over white rice This is what my wife orders. She tells me it's great, but I don't really eat oxtail. I had a bite and the beef was definitely fall off the bone, if you could get around not biting the stupid bone. As far as I'm aware though, that's just the struggle of eating oxtail. read more

I've lived in the neighborhood for years and have been coming here at least monthly ever since. I've tried several things on the menu and just about everything is good. I would highly recommend the pollo guisado, the chuletas, the chicharron de pollo, the breakfast (fried cheese, eggs, salami, mangu w/ onion slices), and of course their sancocho to cure your hangover. I wish I knew exactly how they made it, but even their white rice is delicious. When you order off of the menu be prepared to wait as they prepare your food freshly, but they do always have good options at the counter that are hot and ready as well as tasty pastelitos by the register. Rude and very nasty. The woman behind the counter will grab a few scoops of rice, watery beans and grisly steak pieces and try to charge $11.00. The old lady with the hat behind the food counter was PUTTING the food back into the original trays and was talking bad about the person in broken spanish. I thought nothing of it until my turn to order. Oh man. She was terrible. Scooping small amounts of food in containers and charging ridiculous prices. I asked to add plantains to my meal she said it was a seperate charge. For 2 little piece of plantains you want to charge. All the times I came here before it was added to my plate and now a charge. Ok that pasta looks good how much for a small. She says $10.00,and $8.00 for the small plastic container. Um ok I guess so she fills up the container half way and attempts to close it, um can you fill it up a little more pasta. I felt like I was begging for more food. She said no that's alot in there. I'm not familiar with Dominican food, found this place by using that word as a search query. Despite my unfamiliarity I found their food amazing in both texture and taste. I was in the mood for some hearty, stewy food on a rainy evening and had the opportunity to try the food from this place and got the last bit everything that was left on the daily specials, as the kitchen was closed. Even tho the food cooled off a bit during transit home on a cold night, it was still exquisite and left no weird after taste. A strong sign of fresh ingredients and clean cooking environment and also, a great sign that you could order extra to leave some for leftovers =) I tried the chicken stew, oxtail, pork chop looking dish, red beans, yellow rice. I loved that the chicken stew had a distinctly tomato flavor along with huge melt in your mouth chunks of potato. The chicken was tender and the soup thick, almost a gravy texture that paired amazingly with the yellow rice. The oxtail and pork were not stew based, but rather a roast-like quality that left the meat moist yet flavorful. They were great with the rice also. The rice was spectacular, it was delicious by itself - but when paired with the meats and beans became a mesmerizing harmony of flavors that made me immediately smile at the end of a long dreary day. The scene could've been a Campbell's commercial. I'm glad I had some bubbly pink lemonade from TJ to top off the meal, which probably help bring some sunshine into my life. Anyway. Make no mistake, this is a no-frills kind of place; but I'm perfectly ok with that because for a grand total of $8.50 I had an amazing meal. For dinner I ordered rice, beans, pernil, and a side of maduros. The pernil was juicy, tender, and had crispy skin, which, as an added bonus, wasn't oily. The last few times I've ordered the food was just awful. I would go on a Sunday looking forward to their oxtails, lately they have no flavor and it's undercooked. The baked chicken - also rubbery meaning that was undercooked as well. Ordered a large Sancocho and guess what...? ONE piece of meat and the rest was vegetables. Maybe they changed chefs, I don't know but I've had it with this place. I keep trying to give it another chance but there's the ever present disappointment once again. I'm done. Home-style Dominican food: uncomplicated, unsubtle, unmoderated, undisciplined, but also very good. You won't find any graduates from the Culinary Institute here. Instead you'll get some delicious albeit fattening home-style cooking, just like how mami used to make it. Although the food is delicioso, hay unas problemas with the restaurant. They (surprisingly) take credit cards, but will charge you tax if you use one, and won't charge you tax if you don't use one. In other words, they probably pass ... "tax savings" on to the customer. I once ordered flan and it came back to the table with wet mold. Gross. I understand these things happen, so I don't hold it against them. But really, a dining establishment would've given us free dessert or even the meal free for serving food with wet goopy mold. Instead, I was told we wouldn't be charged for the dessert (well gee, thanks). On the other hand, one of the waitresses noticed that we've been ordering a heck of a lot of food and once gave us a complementary slice of cake for dessert. The cake was a little stale, but the sentiment was extremely appreciated. The restaurant has a cafateria ambiance to it. The walls are just bare paint. It would be SO much nicer if they just hung SOMETHING on the walls. I know Dominicans aren't famous for blankets and trinkets the way Mexico is, but surely that culture produces something that could be used to adorn the place to make it a little less drab and have a little more sabor? House Special: Mofongo At $5, this might have the highest value-to-dollar ratio I've ever seen. Totally delicious, cheap, and you get your choice of meat to mix into the mofongo. It's like a big mash of plantain with bits of meat tossed in. I'm in love with it, especially at the price. I'm sure it's fattening. Bistec Sirloin / Sirloin Steak At $14, it's pricey. The steak is pan fried, and is one fatty steak. Fat, fat, fat. Fatty McFatFat. But if you like this kind of thing (which I ashamedly do) it is SO delicious. No self-respecting chef will serve you a steak like this. It is big, huge, fatty, juicy, and delicious. T-Bone Steak Fatty, but not as fatty as the sirloin. It's pan fried, and smothered with DELICIOUS onions that melt in your mouth, taste like the steak, and provide a phenomenal juice. The only negative thing here is that the steak was EXTREMELY tough to the point of being difficult to eat. Bistec en Salsa / Beef Steak in Sause (sic) A better name would be "Salsa Soup": A whole lot of salsa with little thin strips of steak in it. Salsa gets an A-: a tad salty, but delicious. LOTS of cilantro and rife with flavor. The steak is a bit sad. A bit dry and flavorless; the salsa saves the day. Goes well with tostones. Bistec Sobre Lomo a la Parrilla / (no English translation) It translates into skirt steak on the grill. I know skirt steak, and this ain't it. I can't identify the cut, but it's very lean and very flat. This steak is dry. Thankfully it came smothered with thickly sliced onions and a lot of juice, however, some onions were cut too thick and partially raw. Beef Steak Hind Quarter on the Grill The steak cut is the same as the Bistec Sobre Lomo, but there's no onion and less garlic salt to give this dish personality. There were no grill marks or grill flavor. Underwhelming. Bistec de Jamon / Ham Steak Delicious. A good, solid, thick non-fatty ham steak. Good portion. Lovely grilling. Note: My gf ordered this a few months later and got a plate of Spam. I'm not joking. Hornell Spam. I shit you not. Bistec Salteado / Pepper Steak Spanish Style This is the Bistec Sobre Lomo a la Parrilla with more peppers. Very good, but I wish they'd use a better cut of steak. Bistec Encebollado / Onion Steak This is the Bistec Salteado with more onions. Some onions were too thick and undercooked. Too much raw onion bite. Not enjoyable. Bistec Empanizado / Breaded Steak Tasteless. Empty. Overcooked. Too deeply fried. Gross. Pernil / Roast Pork It's pernil. Delicious! Came Guisada / Stewed Beef Very good, but tasted exactly like Dinty Moore canned beef stew (with bigger beef chunks). Pulpo Enchilado / Octopus Stew Intense tomato-based stew. Wonderful and delicious. The octopus ruins it - it's rubbery and tasteless. They should use that stew for something else that deserves it. Not this gross octopus. Arroz con pollo / Rice w. I ordered a take-out box with half oxtail and half pernil (with rice and no beans) and they charged me $13 which was not the price listed on their menu (should be $8) When I asked why it was so much, the lady said that she added an extra $1.30 for using credit card (although she has never even mentioned that when ringing me up) and mumbled some other things I couldn't really understand. Just phenomenally hot, fresh-that-day, homemade buffet. Pork, chicken, shrimp, plantains, beef stew; chicken stew. There's a special jukebox which plays real Caribbean music and the refridge case has a wide variety of Caribbean soft-drinks and birras; including MEXICAN COKE. Yay!
