Make sure to call before driving over here to get ice cream. We drove from South Kendall only for it to be closed upon arrival. The hours state they open at 1:30 pm. We arrived at 1:45 pm and lights were off and door locked. No sign of life. Shocked to see that this is a common occurrence here, since I see on other reviews on Google stating similar issues with the hours. Either update your hours or open and close when you say you will. Very disappointed that this happened since we were excited about having their ice cream. The name reminds my Mom of Cuba. She was really looking forward to it. This is a cute little ice cream shop that gets quite a bit of business. Came in and it was pretty empty and within a matter of minutes it filled up. I got the Copa Lolita which comes with two scoops of ice cream and a flan. My ice cream flavors were dulce de leche and chocolate fudge brownie. The place is very clean and friendly. I ordered their popular Copa Lolita: flan with 2 scoops of ice cream. The flan was absolutely delicious. But, both scoops of ice cream had no distinct flavors. I had the maracuya (passion fruit) and the malta (malt) flavors. I couldn't taste any difference between the 2 flavors. One scoop was pink in color and the other scoop was beige . That was the only difference that I could notice. There really wasn't any flavor whatsoever in their cream. Sad! I may come back here again for the flan. Plenty to choose from, nothing to do with the Cuban Copelia in Havana where you can only pick one flavor one time purchase per person up to two scoops and not all the flavors are offered on the first floor. The store itself is tight and has all of the tables on top of each other which can be annoying but at the same time you get to laugh with the unmet ice cream neighbors who always have something funny to say. My 4 year old daughter loves going out and sharing a banana split as a family. It's a special time we share together and the Coppelia is close by our house so convenient for us. Last night we went, she had been asking to go for days and was super excited. She and my husband went up to the counter to order, and she tried to converse with the ladies serving the ice cream, but was completely ignored which hurt her feelings. We ate our banana split, which was subpar, consoled her and explained that maybe they were having a bad day and left. It was such a shame and it makes me feel terrible when grumpy people ruin things for her. You work in an ice cream shop, you could at least fake it. Next time we'll take the extra trip down to Walls on US 1. They have never disappointed-always a great experience all around. read more

My mom had been telling me about this ice cream shop called Coppelia for months before my husband & I went to Miami for vacation this summer. She told me about how Coppelia originated in her native Cuba (post Castro per my father), and how people at her job raved about it. So one night after dinner we decided to make the trek to the NW section of Miami...where the only Coppelia outside Havana can be found. Upon arriving, we found parking quickly, as all the surrounding business were closed. When we walked in I felt as if I had stepped into a modern day Cuban eatery featured in several travel shows as of late. The walls were decorated simply with photos of Cuba. The seats were of the old school variety, painted orange, and green and a TV blared the news in Spanish. Two old ice cream freezers sat right up front, and all the tubs of ice cream were stacked haphazardly on top of each other. The two attendants seemed tired, but were both friendly. Another thing that should be mentioned, it was a Monday night, after 9pm, and there was a line.... As we waited our turn, I was amazed at all the different flavors being offered, Mamey, Guava, Coco Almendrado (coconut w/ almonds), Pistachio, Chocolate, there must have been over 20 flavors to choose from, reflective of Cuban and American tastes. Coppelia offers several types of desserts; from sundaes to banana splits, and milkshakes. They even have a mini-flan sandwiched between two scoops of ice cream! Each dessert comes with whip cream, chocolate sauce, a cherry, and a sugar cookie wafer. Or you can do what I did, and have it plain. There isn't a thing on the menu that costs more than $5. Speaking of the cost, there were four of us, and we each got multiple scoops of ice cream, and yet the total cost was under $20, $15.86 to be exact. After much consideration, I decided to go with the Coco Alemendrado & Chocolate. Now let me tell you, I like ice cream, sometimes I can even say I crave it...but this, this ice cream was like heaven in a cute vintage serving dish, and long silver spoon. The chocolate, was not your basic chocolate, but more like a dark chocolate, where the flavors of pure cocoa danced on your tongue. The coconut-almond was rich and creamy, with just the right hint almond. When I paired the two flavors together, I found that the union was better than anything Almond Joy could ever hope for. We liked it so much, that we went back with friends two days later. I had the same combo, but added Caramelo to the mix. Caramelo, was another hit, it tasted exactly like the syrup used for flan, not exactly caramel, and not exactly burnt sugar. It was fantastic. The whole experience was decadent and dreamy, and yet I didn't feel sick afterwards. The portions, are perfect, not so big that you suffer from a sugar coma afterwards, and not too small that you end up buying a pint of Ben & Jerry's at Publix on your way home. In short, it satifies. So the next time you find yourself in the NW, or if you're simply in the mood for some excellent ice cream go support a local business and give Coppelia a try. It will make an ice cream purist out of you. read more

This was only my second time giving Cuban ice cream a try and i'm sold! I first heard of coppelia through a commercial on univision when I was at my grandmothers house and my interests were sparked! According to my grandma this is the same brand of ice cream that you can find in Havana (Even today!). Coppelia isn't as healthy as frozen yogurt but i'm more than willing to sacrifice the calories for this amazing ice cream. This is because: You get the creamy taste of gelato, you get those lady finger cookies in each ice cream, you get some cookie crumbles with every scoop, also some caramel, and some really creamy whipped cream. It's just too tasty to pass it up! My personal favorite flavors include: Dulce de Leche, Caramel, Turron, and Cafe. The only reason I haven't tried every single flavor that they have to offer is because i'm too shy to go up to the employees and ask for a sample of every flavor that they offer. haha! The thing that makes all of this even better! ... it's just so cheap to have some some ice cream here when you compare it to other main stream places. Other things that I like about this place: -You have your ice cream served in classic glass and metal ice cream bowls. -If you order a coke - You have the option of getting it from the glass bottles! -There is a water jug with little cups for everyone to wash down the ice cream with.
