The Miami Rescue Mission has been serving the needs of the homeless in Broward and Miami since 1922. First named City Mission they helped the community through the 1926 Hurricane, the 1929 stock market crash, and the years of the Great Depression. In 1935 the name was changed to Miami Rescue Mission and they continued to offer help to the community during the years of WWII. In 1969 they opened their building at 2250 NW 1Ave. In 1980 it became the Center for Women and Children. In 1992 the Broward outreach center opened. Today they offer 1,300 men, women, and children daily food, shelter, employment, and educational programs. Last year Miami Rescue Mission sever 850,000 meals, 260,000 nights of safe shelter, and helped 4,500 men and women find jobs. In order to fund their programs, The Miami Rescue operates their thrift store, The Bargain Barn. Items donated to the Bargain Barn are given to clients or sold to raise money. In addition to providing low cost items to the community, The Bargain Barn provides job training at their thrift store. Items you can purchase at the thrift shop include furniture, tools, clothing, accessories, and household goods. I was pleased to see the vast selection of inventory. One thing they could do better is to clearly mark everything with a price. On the things I asked about, the prices were extremely fair. We scheduled a pickup of a natural wood bedroom set bought from a north carolina furniture store, in good condition. However, at the time of pickup they started questioning a 2 inch water stain on top one of the nightstands and stated the furniture was used. At that point we realized how rediculous they were in not accepting a good and expensive piece of furniture being donated. WOW, we often donate furniture and goods from our house and office, but will not use this organization anymore. This is like a starving individual rejecting a plate of food, cause it was cold or the plate was old. God Bless Them somehow. read more

I am in complete shock as to how ridiculously picky or lazy some have become when we are trying to donate items that would easily be purchased by someone else. First of all to get them to show up and to get a response was a feat in and of itself. I literally called left messages. Got texts sent pictures and finally got someone to schedule the pick up. We were given a time frame, which meant nothing, as they came two hours late. Then, even though we had submitted pictures and they scheduled the pickup, which one would think means they're accepting the donation, the drivers showed up walked in looked at it and I had some minor marking said no my boss is too picky and they wouldn't take it. They didn't even look at the chair. I wonder if it was they didn't want to carry it to the truck to be honest that is truly what I suspect again we sent pictures and let them know about the furniture and they were OK with it. we live in some crazy times, when someone is trying to donate quality furniture and they are turned away by drivers because and I quote "boss is picky!" I would never have imagined that this is how they operate and it's sad because now it goes to the curb. So much for trying to help read more

Miami Rescue Mission is a great NPO to donate to. They take everything they can use to help the homeless population they serve or everything they can sell, as opposed to Salvation Army, who will not take anything they find old fashioned. If it is in good condition and can be reused, they will take it. The response time is super quick, quicker than any other donation center I've dealt with. The drivers are very courteous and so is the staff at the call center. read more

I badly wanted to donate some clothes and TV to this organization. I submitted a request online and received a form email that someone would get back to me. They hadn't so I phoned and the man on the other end was not helpful at all when I gave my address. He claimed the truck could not be loaded from the street but needed a spot to pull in which I could not provide. However, I live on a cul de sac with a designated area for trucks/cars to stop temporarily...moving vans have used it, Salvation Army has used it but this man refused to listen to me and even said someone had already talked to me...which they haven't. Then after him saying how hard it would be, I said to just forget about it and before I could finish my sentence, he hung up on me. I feel sorry for the homeless this organization is trying to help. Take your donations to somewhere the people are more grateful for it! The workers are very helpful but the guy that seems to be in charge (couldn't catch his name but he had an Irish accent) refused to accept my donation because it was "destroyed." I find it difficult to believe that someone looking to purchase a child's bedroom set at a thrift store would be bothered by a few scratches on furniture for a child that is more likely than not going to get scratched anyway. And even if there was better reasoning, it was his attitude. He waited until all the furniture was unloaded from the truck to say anything causing us to have to load it all over again. Miami Rescue Mission is another amazing thrift shop hidden in the warehouses and galleries of Wynwood. If you turn down the street where the Salvation Army store is located, look for a sign at the corner, and it'll lead you to the Miami Rescue Mission (but don't rely on the address printed there, cause it's wrong!). You enter through a garage and are soon ensconced in a sea of furniture. I saw tons of dressers, entertainment centers, desks, vanitys, and countless other items. Also, tons of TVs available for the taking (no flat-screens though). As you wander through, you'll notice that this place pretty much takes up the whole block, through a series of inter-connected warehouses and tents. While in search of picture frames, we wandered through tons of keepsake goodies - various knick-knacks, vinyl records, old magazines, and other tsotchkes - all ripe for the pickin'. I could easily have spent all day in there, but entered that day with a singular mission - picture frames. To that end, there were tons to choose from (even though I only left with 2). I can't wait to go back and see what other goodies Miami Rescue Mission has in store! read more

I used to donate money to the Miami Rescue Mission but decided why not actually volunteer and help others. I've started volunteering about two months ago and couldn't be happier. Everyone is so friendly and has such positive energy. I help out in the kitchen on the weekends to help feed everyone who lives at the facility and also the homeless. I highly suggest you join this cause and help out. You will see and understand that everyone deserves a chance and when given the right tools and opportunity , we can all succeed! read more

For those of you who donate your clothes to the "goodwill" get with the program! It's 2013. The goodwill is swimming with clothes that no one will probably ever see! Donate to a local charity where you can be assured that your items will go directly to people who desperately need them. I googled a place that would pick up my leather couch that my cat did some damage on (aka clawed the shit out of it). It still looked nice but in the light you could see all of her scratch marks. I would have felt so guilty to throw it away because it was in such good condition so I decided to donate it. The Miami Rescue Mission was the first that was able to pick it up from my building. I was surprised when they were on time for the appointment. The people who picked it up were SUPER nice and very thankful for my donation. In addition, I recently filled a HUGE garbage bag of clothes that I will absolutely never wear or can't squeeze myself into anymore. I didn't want to donate it to the Goodwill so I went to the Miami Rescue Mission for women & children and again, they were so thankful for my donation. You can drop in at anytime to leave your clothes/donations. The door may be locked (as it was for me) but just knock or call them and they will come to open the door. I will have to donate my time next time and volunteer with them. Can't wait! read more

Tried to donate a perfectly good refrigerator/freezer. We didn't let the new appliance delivery people take it so we could donate it to Miami Rescue. The driver was rude and tried to find any excuse not to take it since it's a big unit and they were having trouble getting it out the door. He finally found a small spot of mold (that just happened in the last 2 days since the unit is no longer plugged in) which could have easily been wiped away and said they couldn't take it. We called their office and got the shit treatment also. Now we're stuck with a refrig/freezer in our living room all because we tried to help. read more

BEWARE!! BEWARE!! BEWARE!! This place is set up to rip customers off. Nothing is priced I. This thrift shop.if you are driving by and search the reviews, follow my advice and do not even stop. The staff is not only very rude, but they price items based on what they think a particular customer will pay. So the price for the item is not the same to all customers. Legitimate thrift stores will price the items and negotiate final prices. Stay away from this place there are many legitimate thrift stores to shop. This place reminds me of a really bad used car lot. I spend a lot of time treasure hunting in thrift stores and could not believe when I witnessed how rude customers were treated here. I stayed around long enough to see several interactions between staff and customers and was angered. The Caucasian male managers at this store are extremely obnoxious, rude and racist. I simply asked to negotiate a price and was threaten to be kicked out of the store, just because he could and felt annoyed. The thinner white manager (who's picture I posted) disrespected me by threatening me to shut up, pay or get out. My only objection was to buy more products to lower my final cost. When I pulled out my phone to record the incident, they didn't have anything to say. I've been shopping at this store since they were in Wynwood and to think they don't even have mutual respect for their customers' offends me. Do not shop at this store. I read the reviews on here about donation pickups and wasn't entirely sure about working with them, but they proved me wrong today. First off, pro tip: if you want to have your donation picked up from your home and you call and the guy who answers identifies himself as Lawrence, immediately ask to speak with someone else. This guy isn't going to help you at all. First, he refused to look up the information I'd entered in the online form for the address/date of the donation ("That's all in the past! Let's start over...") and told me to repeat all the information to him over the phone. Then it turns out he didn't communicate my appointment to anyone else in the office because when I called again the lady who answered had no idea I had even been scheduled. She was nice, though, and got my date for the donation confirmed. She also advised me to call the morning of the pickup day around 8:30 to get an estimate on when the truck would be arriving. I call at 8:40. It's Lawrence. He proceeds to tell me they don't give pickup time estimates, and when I told him someone else had instructed me to call with this request, he said whoever told me that was "very bad people". Whatever, I told him to find someone who could give me an estimate. He handed the phone over to the dispatch person who told me the truck would be there between 11 and 1. That's when things got better. I got a call at 12, right in the middle of the window, from Charles and Tirrell who were outside my apartment complex with their truck. Both men were polite and thankful, and we got everything moved out of my apartment in under an hour, no muss no fuss. Thanks, Miami Rescue Mission, and keep doing good for the community. If I could give no star I would. Waited whole day for them to pick up sizeable furniture donation. They called three times saying the truck is delayed. On third call they said they had truck emergency and I was being unreasonable for being upset that I waited all day. The manager said they would reschedule and I would be first thing in the morning the following week. I agreed and that second scheduled day there was no call. I called them and they said "either before 12 or after 1". They called at 12 to say that driver tried but couldn't get a hold of me to say that they can't reach my building. For some reason they were able to reach me to tell me that only at 12. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME, go with another company willing to take your DONATION. read more

They were nice on the phone when making the arrangements, and the guys who came to pick it up, along with the box spring were really nice and made quick work of the job. read more

Terrible experience! Today I tried to donate a sectional and exercise equipment. The driver who came to my house was very rude from the moment he came in he told me he wasn't taking the furniture because it was not in perfect condition. I told him it was used , but it was in good working condition. He refused, he was very rude and walked out of the house and left me talking. He wouldn't speak to me until he saw that I was on the phone with the office. From the moment he walked in the door he had made up his mind of what he was going to take. It was clear that lifting furniture what not something he was willing to do. He said that they sell the furniture and this furniture would not make them money. I don't think that's the message Miami Rescue Mission wants out there. As a women, I felt extremely disrespected by that man. Do not waste your time donating to these people. I had a scheduled pick up , I was told to call the morning of to find out the time frame in which they were going to show up. I called first thing in the morning and the guy that picked up said they don't give time frame, basically they can show up at anytime between 9-4. I thought that was weird, ok let me sit here and wait all day. I got a call from the driver at about 1030 am that he was 10 min away, I even gave him the code to get inside the building. Two hours passed and nothing. I called the driver back, no answer. I then call the main number and the guy says the driver was at my place but couldn't find parking and left. I got upset because I've had been waiting here and no one had called to at least say they were having problems with parking. I want to start off saying that ALI is one of the best managers of the bargain barn that I have encountered. I have donated money and other items; I have also shopped for the homeless. The staff in the front are always courteous and helpful, I can't say that about the managers of the outside rear or the clothing store. I understand the need to make money, however, not everyone purchase to resale, some people shop there because they have lost everything and just need a new start. I will continue to donate and shop there because I believe in Rescue Mission. read more

I can't even give Miami Rescue Mission/Bargain Barn a star even for a poor rating. I was given a voucher from the Broward County Outreach program for furniture. have picked up my furniture gentleman came to deliver my furniture I asked him other than instead of my bed they say normally they don't do it but he would do it this time, next thing I knew he left. I called the driver and let him know that he did not bring my dresser in to me, he stated he did not have a dresser for me. I called the office and spoke with a supervisor about the dresser and the way the driver left after saying that he'd put the together. The supervisor stated to me that he was going to see what happened with the dresser normally the drivers do not set up furniture, I told supervisor that the driver could have just let me know that and let that be bygones but instead he chose to leave without saying anything and not set up the furniture and I thought that that was unfair and cruel of him. the supervisor then stated to me that I should be considerate because I got the furniture for free. I contacted several people with in that company about the treatment that I will see you in the comment that was made to me including another supervisor about the name of Maria which she yelled at me on the phone and told me lady let me tell you something and I decided not to speak with her with her disposition that she was carrying on. the last person last spoke with I didn't Catherine name but told me someone named Michael about you it was going to be calling me I never received a call from the company I'm very disappointed although I had to utilize the shelter and I am very grateful for that opportunity that I had in order to knock out some kinks in my life. but that part of it with the furniture and I was see the voucher and I'm grateful for it but to be told that I should be grateful because the furniture was given to me for free that I should take abuse from them.
