The meat and potatoes: Custom jewelry requires transparency, consent, and integrity. Undisclosed gemstone substitutions, misrepresented diamond clarity, and swapping diamonds without client authorization reflect practices that should concern any consumer. Proceed with extreme caution. The full kit & kaboodle: I paid $11,700 to Michel E. Minden Jewelers for a custom engagement ring. What followed was a series of undisclosed substitutions, material discrepancies, and a complete refusal to take responsibility. The ring was not produced according to the design specifications. When I raised concerns, I was initially brushed off, and then later told it would cost an additional $2,000 to fix their discrepancies. An independent appraisal revealed that the "teal sapphires" paid for were actually spinels, a lower-value gemstone, which were substituted without my knowledge or consent. More concerning, the diamonds were confirmed to be SI1 clarity, despite being sold and invoiced to us as the superior VS2 clarity. When brought to Michael's attention, he informed me that his gemstone vendor substituted the stones because he couldn't find the color of sapphire (teal) that I wanted. Michael then finally offered to fix the ring "as a favor". When we asked about the issue of the diamond clarity, Michael was adamant that he sold us VS2 quality, and that he didn't care what the appraisal said. To prove his case, he offered to have the diamonds certified, which would show the VS2 quality. I had assumed he was going to have them GIA certified, but he would only agree to IGI certification, which is a less reliable (and lower cost) certification. We discussed Michael's ability to remake the ring to the original design specifications and Michael offered to reimburse us $1,500 (even though he was going to charge $2000) to contract a new jeweler to correct the work. Three weeks later the diamonds were finally available for pickup, and they were immediately mailed to the new jeweler, as this was the only component he was waiting on to finish setting the ring. Michelle, the store manager, advised that they were giving me 4 grams of raw gold to have my ring remade, so the new jeweler wouldn't run into any issues with melting down my previous ring. This seemed generous at first, except that they later told us that they wouldn't give me back my original ring, because they were giving me the gold instead. At this point, I just wanted to conclude all interactions with this business and move on. Unfortunately, when my new jeweler received the diamonds, he discovered that they were not the same dimensions as the original stones. I immediately contacted Michelle and only after pressing for answers was I told that Michael had "upgraded" the diamonds without my knowledge or authorization. The substituted diamonds were incompatible with my very specific custom design, rendering the ring impossible to recreate as originally built. Repeated emails, texts, and attempts to obtain answers were ignored. We went to the store in person after being repeatedly disregarded, at which point Michael refused to come out and later conveyed through staff that he considered the matter "closed." He even went so far as to accuse ME of trying to extort HIM!! All I wanted was my original diamonds back, or for him to take back his crappy diamonds and gold and provide a full refund. After exhausting every reasonable avenue, I filed an insurance claim and sought legal counsel. He ignored the attorneys as well but thankfully my insurance claim was approved. Without this, I would have been forced to take Michael to court. I have emails, texts, and appraisals to prove everything that happened. I would never recommend soliciting business from this company. read more

This was the 4th or 5th jewelry store I walked in. I was on a mission to find the right band for my diamond. I wanted to replace my original band since I may have an allergy to nickel, which is in my 14K white gold band. As soon as I walked in, Tanya's energetic personality made it really fun to "find the right one." I took my time trying on many different bands. Tanya felt like a BFF cheering you on and gets just as excited when she sees that "Wow" factor in a ring. I was sidetracked by the lovely selection they had for wedding rings and engagement bands, diamond bracelets and watches. I had a budget for what I wanted to spend. I couldn't believe it. I ended up with a beautiful 18K white gold band (it has less nickel) that my princess cut now sets in. It's spectacular. The photo doesn't do it justice. I received a chain and pendant as a gift from this store. Unfortunately, I only had it for four months before the chain snapped, and I was devastated. I returned to the store to inquire about repairing the chain, and they assured me that it was fixable. However, what I didn't anticipate was a cheap fix. The chain no longer looks the same and has a soldered piece of silver holding it together. As a result, I will never go back to this store to purchase or repair any jewelry. They should have informed me that they lacked the expertise to fix it, and I would have gone to a more experienced jeweler. I rarely leave long reviews, but my experience here has been frustrating enough that people deserve to know. I came into this jewelry store in fashion show mall next to Saks Fifth Avenue the men's entrance it sits on the corner by the escalators by the sound booth for the lighting show for the runway show looking to purchase a Rolex dial and asked a sales associate named "Vanessa" (tall, dark hair) if the dial in the window could be ordered for my 1988 Rolex model 15010 in the color green with no diamonds. She didn't know and said Michael, an older gentleman, would be the person to help me as she pointed to him while he was helping others with wedding bands. She promised he'd call me. She took my information and wrote it on a lime green post name phone number what I want the whole 9 yards. A week went by -- nothing. I stopped back in, and she clearly had no record of me. My information that she scribbled on a Post-It she lost, as she rummage through her work area desk that was in a bit shambles with papers and post it all over the place (should've been my first sign not organized) among piles of notes at her desk. That alone told me I wasn't taken seriously as a customer. While I waited, a senior staff member quietly admitted this "happens pretty regularly," which was not reassuring. This was an older lady with gray hair that I was speaking to while Vanessa was running around talking and supposedly to somebody behind a curtain. Vanessa then told me Michael or she would reach out after the weekend because the New York supplier was closed as it was on a Friday and there's a three in a container up on the top shelf on the side, the top shelf on the side hour difference between here in Las Vegas and the east coast. Again, I gave the benefit of the doubt. She also informed me of the price, but she said it was $900 including install that's nickel and dimes for me. Monday comes nothing no call. Anything OK give the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they were busy. It was a Monday. Tuesday came and went -- no call. She later claimed she "called me," but I can show my phone log -- no missed calls, no voicemails. The coincidence? The only time I got a call back was immediately after I posted my first negative review. Suddenly I received a voicemail saying the dial would be $900 with installation. If I hadn't posted publicly, I would've been completely ignored. When I say it was minutes after the review, it was like clockwork could've been timed probably 2 to 3 minutes exactly I'm not a liar. I have money and I want to give it and spend it. I buy all namebrand. I buy luxury stuff. I'm begging to give them my money as a customer. I've since called twice and left messages, yet I'm still waiting on a real follow-up. I'm asking simple questions: Can I please work directly with Michael? Can someone actually take this purchase seriously? I want to spend money here, but I shouldn't have to chase down a jewelry store begging them to take it. This is not how luxury retail or jewelry sales should work. Customers don't want excuses like "I'm the only one working" -- we want communication, respect, and professionalism. Especially in today's economy, letting a sale walk away is unacceptable. To be clear: the store itself has gorgeous pieces, and I would consider buying more in the future if I could trust the staff to follow through. But as of now, my experience with Vanessa has been extremely disappointing. If the management or Michael himself reaches out and provides real customer service, I will gladly update this review. For now, I cannot recommend this store due to poor communication, lack of follow-up, and the feeling that unless you complain publicly, you won't be taken seriously. Let's see what happens with this because it's ridiculous. I'm probably gonna pay the store a visit again and inconvenience myself begging a story to please take my money and please let me buy something that they said they can get for me. Maybe she misplaced my number again. I don't know. Maybe she's working alone. I don't know. Maybe I'll get some kind of BS excuse. This store has advertisements on 104.7 radio station that is highly recommended but I should call the radio station and let them know my experience because it's nothing what their commercial say. My fiancé bought my $18,000 engagement ring here, yet every time I come in for a simple cleaning, she's dismissive and acts like I'm inconveniencing her. She keeps repeating there's "no one here to clean it" or that I need an appointment -- even though she steamed it herself last time and it takes one minute. My mother got a beautiful gold necklace made here for me with some gold that she had from my Grandmother. I really loved it but the chain broke multiple times. I do take care of my jewelry and have never had an issue with any of my pieces breaking before. After the 3rd break, I came in to get it fixed (it broke in 3 different spots, it wasn't the same place multiple times) and after explaining to the sales woman what kept happening she just blamed me on being too hard on my necklace. We asked if we could switch it out for a different chain and she said that because we got it made, we got it for free (as if we didn't pay them in excess gold) so they wouldn't switch it with a better chain. My poor mother felt so bad that the chain was so horribly made that she ended up buying a new chain- they up charged her $700 for their mistake- no discount or even a trade in price SINCE THEY KEPT THE ORIGINAL CHAIN. They made a bad chain and didn't take responsibility for it. Again, the sales woman even claimed that because she paid in hold that they did the work for free???? Since then, we've switch jewelers. They offered nothing to us in return - we did pay quite a bit for all of this and I would rather my mom go somewhere else when she needs custom jewelry. Just go somewhere else. read more

Of course this business is going to try to bully people out of leaving their review of their experience. I had to explain Leslie what a princess cut is. I asked if all of the square Moissanites always have the same cut as the brilliant and she told me yes which was false. I had to return with a picture of an actual princess cut for Michelle to understand what I meant. Your sales people offered to order stones and explained that it would be no cost if they were returned within a certain time frame. I am not going to be guilted for parts of your business that you offer. A cut that is "close enough" is not what I requested to look at. I am within my rights to say that is not what I wanted. I had every intention of working with this jeweler until they provided incorrect information twice within a 24 hour period, after already providing incorrect information previously. I'm not going to be forced to a) buy something I don't want or b) spend money with a business I don't feel comfortable with being able to fulfill my vision. I did not disappear for 2 weeks. I was upfront the entire time about only having availability on the weekends, and I told Michelle the week before I was "missing" that I was going to be out of town that weekend. She even asked where I was going, to which I replied "Sacramento" (not like I have to explain myself and my whereabouts to a business though.) No designs were created with Michael E Minden. We conceptualized and came to the conclusion that this jeweler could not fulfill my vision. I showed Michelle pictures of what I wanted to create, a tulip setting on a cathedral head, and she told me to just order it from an online retailer. I've lived in Las Vegas since 1971 and for the whole of that time had only ever done business with another jeweler who was very well known and trusted at the time. When that jeweler retired and sold his business, I was very nervous and a bit skeptical about who I was going to trust with my jewelry. I wanted a jeweler who I could trust with everything from cleaning and checking my jewelry to keeping my jewelry appraisals updated to having someone to sell old jewelry to and someone to help me create new custom pieces from time to time. My husband and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in 2020 and I wanted two diamonds bands to replace the plain white gold bands that surrounded my engagement ring. After looking for nearly a year prior to our 10th anniversary, it was clear I would need to have custom bands created due to the shape of my engagement ring and the size I needed. My husband knew Michael Minden and talked to him about what I wanted. Michael immediately put us in touch with Michelle at his store. My first encounter with Michelle was nothing short of fabulous! I explained what I wanted, she looked at my existing setting and before I had even finished explaining, Michelle had drawn a diagram of exactly what I wanted! I was able to use the gold from my original bands as credit towards the new rings and even had diamonds from a pendant that my husband had given me years ago that we used in the two new rings! The result was a gorgeous updated wedding ring that I love so so much and get so many compliments on!! I assumed we could find a place in Vegas, and when we struck out at our resort, we were told to try to mall. After a few strikes our, we came across Michael E Minden and they were wonderful. Not only was Michelle able to get my ring sized on site, she moved things around so that we could have it done same day (we came in around 2:00), though I picked it up the next afternoon. I went into the store last night to get a price on some jewelry for my aging aunt. I was very happy with the encounter. I was kindly greeted by Michelle and Leslie. They gave me an offer on all the pieces that I brought in. Treated me like a valued guest in their store. The offers I was given for my pieces was higher than previous offers and the experience was very pleasant. I will tell all my friends to go there, and I will be returning with more things for them! Me and my girlfriend decided to check out engagement rings at the Fashion show mall and stopped at Mindens after going to Kay's. We saw a design we really liked but ultimately the stone was only a 1/3 of what we were looking for and we didn't like how the Diamond was seated on the band. Thus we came to Mindens to see if they had anything we liked and the whole process was so smooth. Michelle helped us pick out a beautiful GIA certified Diamond and knew exactly what we wanted after listening to our description of the ring we saw at Kay's. Michelle was able to have a custom ring made and shipped to me in California. Honestly ring shopping can be such a scary experience, but at Minden they are so nice and did not pressure us at all.
