Mike is a gem and I'll go back to him for all my jewelry after randomly popping in today for a resizing. We had ordered a gold wedding band for my fiancé and had it engraved, but when it arrived it was a little too small. Another jeweler had just told me it could mess it up but they would try and it would take a few days. I left that jeweler and on a whim, brought it in to Mike expecting to be told the same thing. Nope, Mike was confident he could do it and invited me to watch while he did it right then! He's clearly very experienced at his craft and knows exactly what he's doing. Wandered in 5 minutes before closing to Golden Nugget after discovering that Tiffany no longer replaces watch batteries for their brand at their stores for free. Now they send them out and charge $50. Two plus weeks without my watch was more than I could handle. Golden Nugget's guy had left but Michael was in. He deftly replaced the battery carefully waiting to demonstrate that the watch was indeed working. His charge machine wasn't working; I had $10 bucks on me to cover the $20 cost. "You'll come back and pay me. Who does that anymore??? I did return, paid him what I owed him and also got a new band. Loved the personal service and sheer competence. I was really upset when my watch clasp broke, and I happened to walk by this place the next day. I brought my watch in and not only did the guy fix it in about two minutes, he didn't even charge me for it! Mike is now my go-to jeweler. He is an excellent craftsman, and a stand-up guy. In a neighborhood full of snakes, you can be certain you will be treated fairly by Mike. This is the first negative review I've ever given a business but it is a well deserved one. My fiance had her engagement ring resized here. Shortly thereafter, one of the small diamonds fell out. We had the ring examined by the Jeweler that made the ring who provided us with a detailed, written explanation of the damage done to the ring during the resizing process (over polished, displacement of main prong). The jeweler concluded that he could apply no more heat to the ring, or proceed with any further polishing, as would be necessary to reset the missing diamond and readjust the center diamond. As such, I've been forced to incur significant cost to have the ring recast, replacing the missing diamonds and for labor. Michael wouldn't even do me the courtesy of giving me his email address so that I could forward the jeweler's letter to him. He initially offered to cover some of the expense himself but has since retracted that offer. Instead, he has offered to fix the ring himself, which I'm obviously not going to allow. read more

Finding Michael Jay Jewelers was a little tricky at first, since the address that I had was 800 Chestnut. The corner of 8th and Chestnut has a large store with many booths inside, which took me a while to realize. It was definitely worth looking for it though. I had just gotten a watch which was too big for my wrists and took it to Michael to get it fixed. Because of the way the watch is made, it wasn't sure whether the wrist strap could be shortened so he offered to at least try. Though it was tricky, he got the job done and only charged me a very good price. 5 minutes after leaving the store I realized that the watch was still too big so I took it back and gladly fixed it for me again, free of charge. Overall, and excellent experience, very friendly and definitely worth it! read more

Fantastic. Went there to get an antique mine cut engagement ring polished and resized. Went on a Monday afternoon and spoke with Michael and he told me the deal and quoted me a price and I told him I would be back with my girlfriend the following weekend. We went back at opening on the following Sunday (yesterday) and he took us right in, did everything we needed and was willing to work with us on the price. The ring took a little more work than anticipated but he was honest and up front and I was definitely willing to work with him on the price since he had to do more work than originally thought. He was extremely personable and he explained everything he was doing and really made us feel like we were a part of the process. He was also extremely thorough in making sure I had the ring in sight and that I saw every move he was making with the ring and how he was handling it. This place is great, everyone is friendly, no one gives you an attitude. I always forget the guy's name who's the repair guy but he's a really good guy. Never makes you wait, gets everything done quickly and gives fair prices! I got my bracelet fixed there within 10 minutes no problems.
