Unreliable and Unprofessional. Additionally, I've had pharmacies refuse to fill his prescriptions without speaking to him, and because he is not reachable, what would take a 2 minute phone call with any other legitimate doctor ends up taking weeks. Depending on the day of the week he has been known to have frantic meltdowns and yell at patients. Nice guy, a little strange. I call him "Dr. Pez" ... empty office and a prescription pad, professional Rx writer extraordinaire. I really have little problem with this, as he is very up front about it, and quite frankly, I need what he is selling. He said that he's not a therapist, and recommends others for you to see, though he does listen well, and I generally have decent visits. The one star is because at a certain point I really needed this guy. I needed a refill as I was all out of refills. I had already been off of meds a week and was starting to get some real panic. I called and I called and I called, and I never heard back. Not ever. This was more than a year ago. Reading other reviews, it would seem that I'm not alone, so I would steer clear, not for Dr. Gray personally, but for the quality of the practice. read more

I think dr gray is an awesome doctor. He always had time to listen and assess my issues and is much more grounded than a lot of other doctors I've seen. I think we can all agree that doctors in ny are seriously a mixed bag and I'm extremely lucky to find and be a patient of dr gray. He has One secretary who if you are lucky calls to confirm an appointment, however ONLY after 11:00 PM the night before. I find this office to be EXTREMELY disorganized as well as unpleasant. Ruth S., whoever you are, you have no idea whatsoever is going on here, and likely don't need to know. It's nice of you to say something, though. But your comment: "...he is dealing with people with mental health issues and this is not an easy task. People with variable and unstable emotions get upset easily and tend to lash out."--I'll kindly ask you to please shut it. Sure, that can be true, but in some cases, it's rather NOT. I do think Dr. Gray's a good guy, I like him well enough, but Con F knows a little--well, obviously a lot--more than you do. You may think he's just mean-spirited--"weaselly little man"--ouch!--but I understand that he is more likely angry at being a patient forced to pay for someone else's own unpleasant situation. But this: "He has 15 minute sessions with his patients from 7am to 7pm, where he cranks out scrip after scrip and I guess he got caught and was embarrassed to tell his patients." And this: "..he's a pusher, nothing more, nothing less." That's only conjecture in your own words and not correctly factual, as you've written it, and as for calling him "a pusher"...maybe you don't know what that really means, because that's not what he is. The doctor has hit me too, and under NYS Board of Health directives, his actions with medications regarding me are NOT what is recommended, nor is the way he is handling it, or the way he spoke to me, and what he said to me. The question is, do I want to make anyone's life even more difficult? Even so, I'll speak up for him along the lines of my 4th paragraph here. For instance, NO, in response to many people's statements across the Internet, I personally have NOT found the guy to be a virtual Pez dispenser for, as I found one person say, "happy pills"--or anything else. Another said Dr. Gray asked, "So, do you want me to give you a prescription?" These are comments I really have to wonder at because that hasn't been my personal experience with the doctor AT ALL. I wouldn't even consider the thought of judging him, I feel bad, really, but I've learned enough about the issue to understand why he's acting the way he is. And I'm not going to spell it out for anybody. I'm angry, though, because I AM aware of the situation and that I'm having to pay for it, too. And that's not right. I had to make a Yelp! account just to write about Dr. Gray, with whom I had a terrible experience... at first, I felt so lucky and grateful to have found a guy covered by my insurance and willing to write up prescriptions after only one visit! I was so happy! After struggling with depression for so long without any help, being put on an anti-depressant all of a sudden was a huge life change. He helped me to build up my tolerance too so that my body wouldn't adversely react. Upon being on the medication, it seriously felt like a dark cloud had been lifted. I was practically skipping wherever I went! However, he told me to call him back in about a month so that my medication could be refilled. So I did. No response. I figured I would call him again--once that night, then the next day, and then 2/3 days later (all in business hours), and still received no response. I tried again and again and my messages went unanswered. I went through withdrawal, which gave me a myriad of symptoms (vomiting, insomnia, anxiety, and severe depression, including a strong inclination towards suicidal behavior), rendering me not only unable to go to school or work but also leaving me more mentally and physically sick than I had been prior to medication. I wish that things had gone better. Really, meeting with Dr. Gray initially felt like a godsend. But I see now that I was mistaken. I would say that I'll never go back, but without ever getting phone call as a response, I doubt that I would even be able to... read more

Dr Gray is the definition of a 'pill-mill'. My boyfriend visited Dr Gray to hopefully get tested and possibly diagnosed. My boyfriend's initial visit was only 10 minutes! He literally asked him which medication he wanted and wrote a prescription for it, as if he was a candy store. Also, he is the most unprofessional psychiatrist in the field! My boyfriend and I both called his office multiple times to reschedule his follow up appointment, with no answer, and left numerous voicemails. No one answers the phone, and Dr Gray threatened my boyfriend saying that he was going to be held responsible for the appointment he missed, that he was trying to call and reschedule!!! After explaining that the office doesn't pick up the phone and that we've been trying to contact him several times, Dr Gray raised his voice and yelled at us, saying " YOU DID NOT CALL ME!! I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY CALL FROM YOU AT ALL!!!" Mind you, his "secretary" only works 3 days out of the week and can't get to all of his voicemails, so there was obviously a lack of communication between him and his secretary. The office is a mess. He has no organization, both physical or mental. Papers are thrown everywhere, along with tissue boxes and plastic containers. His secretary's office is also a mess. She works from what looks like a closet. We have never been so disrespected by a medical professional, and that's the only reason I had to write this review. If you want to schedule any appointment, I suggest you go in person to his office (if you still want to see him) or find another doctor in your formulary. I've been seeing Dr. Gray for several years now, and in my opinion, he is a fantastic doctor!!

At first, Dr. Gray seemed great, although he seemed incredibly high on drugs and barely made eye contact, let alone kept his eyes open -- things went downhill quickly. I went in to see him twice, once for the first month of medicine, then again after the first month for a check in and to be put on the medication for 6 months. Fast forward two months later, I was trying to get pregnant and knew I needed to get off of the medication in order to have a healthy and safe pregnancy. I called Dr. Grays office about 20 times, leaving a kind voicemail each time. Over the span of TWO MONTHS, they never called me back once to schedule an appointment. This lead to me having to take myself off of the medication and have terrible withdrawal symptoms which made it unable for me to go about my day and/or work my day job. All in all, Dr. Gray is nothing but a pill pusher and drug addict himself. I have filed a complaint with the health board as well as BBB. I suggest that you find another doctor that isn't as high as Dr. Gray, and one that isn't just interested in pushing pills, but rather your health, safety, and putting you first. read more

This man, pardon my language, is a first rate douche. I was a patient of his about 10 years ago, but stopped going to him because no pharmacy would fill his prescriptions. However, having read some positive reviews here, I made an appointment. That particular day, I was running late and I called him, got his voice mail and left a message that I was en route,.but would be about 10 minutes late. I was 15 minutes late, he turned me away and advised me to make another appointment. When I did, I was told that , in order to reschedule, I would have to pay $150.00 for the session I missed and then another $150.00 for the initial visit. I told his receptionist that he can kiss my rear end in Macy's window on Christmas Eve. The man IS a pill pusher ~ let's be clear about this. He is the very last person I would recommend. to anyone seeking a professional therapist. I thought he had changed, but those spots on the leopard never change. If you want a PROFESSIONAL psychiatrist, this is NOT the man to see. He is a money grubbing, surly creep. I am so done with him. read more

Dr Gray has a deeper knowledge of head-meds than anyone else I have ever met. He's happy to discuss options and fine tune doses. Additionally, he doesn't think he is god like most psychiatrists i have tried to work with. I have been seeing Dr. Gray intermittently over a 10 year period. His professionalism, compassion and human kindness as my sorrow spilled over his desk was in of itself a healing balm. I have never felt rushed, he has always taken the appropriate time for me to discuss my problems and a dialogue regarding medication. I can always confide in him and I have admiration for someone who wakes up in the morning for work knowing he is going to face sadness and tears for most of his working day and yet somehow he keeps his own spirits up to help you. His office is in a totally convenient location next door to Grand Central and yes, his office is a no frill operation but you are not going there for the decor, if you are then you do need a shrink. Dr. Gray is professional and compassionate. He listens intently with a genuine concern, clearly assisting in any way to provide help as best as he can. He is knowledgeble in several areas; can make suggestions, referrals and in depth information on any prescribed drugs. Visiting a psychiatric professional may be intimidating to some, especially in the beginning, but the comfort level makes the experience a positive one. read more

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT COME HERE. NO MATTER HOW CHEAP IT IS. There are other cheaper places to go!!! You just have to look around and they actually care about how you are feeling!!! I finally decided to go on medication and went to Dr. Gray simply for the pricing, all was well and good (despite the fact that he will probably prescribe you anything you ask for). He is very unorganized (folders and folders sitting all around his office). HERE IS THE BEST PART. I couldnt make my Monday appt so I called on a Sunday to cancel (THEY NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE) so I left a message with 24 hours notice. I called to rebook my appointment in the following days and the secretary told me I owed them the missed appointment. She spoke to Dr. Gray and told him I cancelled the day before and he told her on a note "Sundays dont count. She has to pay." I was out of my medication in which causes withdrawals if you end abruptly. I refused to pay the amount knowing that I went by protocol. I even went to his office in the beginning when I didnt know I owed anything and I pressed his bell and he told me he was too busy and I needed to call. DESPITE THE FACT that the receptionist only returns your calls sometimes and calls you back at 11PM. NOT EXAGGERATING. PLEASE if you are at all CONCERNED about your mental health, DO NOT go to him. I found a new psychiatrist who is only $25 more, has great secretaries and works in a professional manner. P.S. He looks like he is high out of his mind and speaks to you with half his eyes closed. read more

Dr. Gray has to be one of the worst psychiatrist I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I would not recommend anyone seek him for treatment. I find most of the sessions to be awkwardly uncomfortable with little accomplished after leaving. In addition and most importantly, he is not accessible by phone if you need to speak to him or need anything. It is impossible to book an appointment with his "secretary" as well because they do not hold normal business hours but instead will only answer a phone at 8pm. I found Dr. Gray ultimately callous and unprofessional. I missed an appointment, and I had to call repeatedly for nearly three weeks to get another appointment. In the meantime, my meds ran out, and despite informing the doctor's office over a week period that my meds were going to--and finally did--run out, Dr Gray did nothing to help--would not call me to tell me what to do, would not call the pharmacy to come in, did not get me in to see him. His response when I saw him was that it was my fault because I had missed my appointmen--despite the fact that I called the very next day to reschedule. He is no doubt fine in prescribing pills--which makes him a high faultin' drug pusher--but as a caring doctor, he fails miserably. read more

Ugh. He seemed great at first...for two appointments I had no problem getting in contact. I would leave a message and his secretary would phone back at like 10pm- it was a little annoying but it didn't bother me too much. When I was trying to make a third appointment however was when this guy went MIA. This has also happened to several others I know who were seeing him - it seems its his habit to simply stop responding to patients after a few initial visits. I hadn't heard an answer to ANY of my messages left after a month, so I stopped in one day to say hi and ask if there was any other way I could get in touch, maybe via email, or if he could ask his secretary to phone me? Super normal request, I was even smiling as I spoke to him. This asshole was RUDE...UNPROFESSIONAL.... RAISED his voice at me, denying that I ever called, forced me to leave the office and slammed his door IN MY FACE. Completely uncalled for and disgusting behavior... I did NOTHING to deserve that kind of nasty reaction from him! This man clearly got into his field in order to diagnose his own mental issues! SERIOUSLY DON'T SEE THIS GUY HE IS BAD NEWS. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Gray for almost twenty years and believe me, things have changed. If you call to schedule your appointment, you always get a recording and it takes about two or three days to get a call back to schedule an appointment. When she does call, the appointments are filled for some time. If you have a problem with your medications and try to call or the pharmacy tries to call, Don't hold your breath because it may take days for him to call back, if he does call at all. One day, I went for my scheduled appointments like usual and he was in a foul mood. I sat and wondered what was going on. He said he is weening me off my medicine and he has spoken to me about it on our last appointment. He did NOT speak to me about doing this. I had been on the medicine for years. He prescribed it and I had been taking it for years. I had asked in the beginning if it is safe to stay on that long and he said yes. Now he is taking it away. But what really killed me is that he is going to prescribe me other crap to take it's place. When I tried to explain that the original medicine was doing me good, he exploded with rage. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. He was yelling at me like I was a dog. I was actually frightened. I thought he was having a melt down. When I tried to say something he would raise his voice even louder and said that he will not even write anything for me and that if I wanted to go somewhere else, than go. I never did anything to deserve that kind of treatment. I did not abuse the medication. I followed the rules. I never just walked in without an appointment. I thought he was a good doctor but I saw another side of him that I never want to see again. I lost my respect for him. I still see him, but my guard will always be up. Our relationship will never be the same even though he acts like nothing happened. read more

DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR!!!!! My experience was very similar to Peter B. It was never explained to me that he wouldn't refill prescriptions over the phone. I called and called his office numerous times and no one ever returned my phone call. I would have been happy to come in for an appointment if someone had bothered to call me back to say that I needed one. The kicker is that the secretary bold faced lied to me and said she had called me back numerous times. My phone records say otherwise. When I finally did reach the office and called her out on it, Dr. Gray threatened to never see me again and not refill the prescription, which by that time had run out and I was looking at withdrawal effects. He treated my like a 'crazy person' ... I have a tendency towards depression which hardly qualifies as nuts. My advice is to find a different doctor. read more

Today was my first visit with Dr. Gray and he was amazing. I told him what my issue was and my apprehension with taking medication and he was very understanding, thoughtful and compassionate. I left the office feeling renewed and I'm glad I decided to give him a chance. I have had a positive experience with Dr. Gray. His office is terrible--stark, unwelcoming--and he is not a man of much eye contact, but he is kind and solicitous. He listened to me patiently, prescribed medication that ultimately was very helpful, responded quickly to my calls about side effects, and has seen me for follow-ups. His practice is a farce. And so is his professionalism and commitment to his patients. Saw him once, he prescribed me medicine. A couple days later, I started having adverse effects from the medication. Called him the following morning and left a message telling him that I needed him to call me back. No response. Called again that evening. No response. Called the next morning. No response. Finally, after 48 hours, he called back after I left him numerous messages. I had already taken myself off the medication without any guidance from him. Tried to make a follow up appointment and give him another chance. Called for 2 straight days, no response from anyone. Finally get in touch with his service, she makes an appointment,. The morning of the appointment (it's not until 4:45 PM in the afternoon), I wake up with a fever. Call his office early that morning and leave a message. Asked him to reschedule. No response. Called back that evening. No response. Finally get through to his service and she says that I need to pay $65 for the pleasure of being able to make another appointment. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone! read more

Worst doctor I've ever had. Where to begin....So my first appointment. I walk up to Dr. Gray's office, it is a door with no name on it. I buzz in, what I see when I walk in is a small room, heavily stained carpet floor, and two doors with no labels on them. My first thought was this is the shadiest doctors office I've ever been to. After about 10 minutes of waiting, thinking this was a trap and I was going to be kidnapped and sold for parts, a small man with a suit at least 2 sizes too big opens the door and says "Take a seat." He doesn't say hello, doesn't shake my hand, doesn't introduce himself in anyway. If that wasn't enough, what I saw when I walked in his office was even more unsettling. There were file cabinets upon file cabinets overflowing with folders, two book cases with old dusty books, one of which I noticed was directory of medical specialists from 1992, an old beat up desk, and most importantly, no computer. This guy is living in the stone age. We then had a 10 minute conversation, he clearly wanted to get on to the next patient, followed by him writing me a prescription for adderall. Let me remind you he didn't ask me for ID, or previous medical records. It literally just took me saying that I've been taking adderall for years for him to write the prescription. Anyone could have walked into that office and asked for anything and he would have written thema prescription. The fact that Dr. Gray is 3rd in yelp's best psychiatrists in NYC is a travesty and a testament to the fact that not many people are reviewing psychiatrists on this site. I've been a patient of his for about two years. I would give him four stars for his being a very kind, caring and thoughtful person.I generally see him once every three months to get a refill of my prescription medication. I am taking off two stars because of his utter unavailability. It is only possible to speak to him when you see him at the appointment. If you leave him a message, he will not return your call, rather you're going to have to deal with his insensitive, rude, unhelpful, cookie-cutter, collections lady. I missed my appointment because I was in Europe and ran out of medications a few days after I returned. I left a message asking that he phone my pharmacy and refill the prescription and we'd meet the next week. This lady calls me back. I inform her that it is really not such a big deal for him to call the pharmacy. Ever try running into a brick wall? This is it. "Can you please call Dr. Gray and ask him if he could do this?" "I'm sorry, I would never disturb Dr. Gray after hours. If it's an emergency, you need to go to the emergency room." Are you serious!? You don't call him to give him his messages??? WOW. I had to take an early-morning appointment the very next day in order to even get the re-fill. While there, he couldn't find my folder and prescribed me only one of my two normal prescriptions. I'm now dreading dealing with this lady again to have her do this simple go-between question. My advice: AVOID. read more
