It all made sense when I found that they have a design area upstairs. Downstairs they have various kitchen items and gadgets. An appointment is required to talk about cabinetry and get some estimates. I met with Marnie, and she was fantastic. I had Opinions on what I did and did not want and she seemed pleased with that and that I had actually done the research on the cabinetry options she'd sent, so I came in knowing precisely which ones I wanted. It definitely made the appointment go more quickly since I already knew which door styles and colors I was interested in. She talked with me about some of the technical aspects (e.g., framed vs. frameless vanities, top mount vs. under mount sinks, etc.) and they had various examples on display. They also had most of the door styles to have a better idea of what they'd look like. For the bathroom in which the vanity would be installed, the options here were more than we wanted to spend. I'd like to consider an update for the main bathroom, though, and would look to AKB for that job. The companies they work with have really beautiful products. Honestly, it makes me want to do more remodeling (main bathroom! Kitchen!) because wandering around the showroom made me want everything! I'm probably not quite that much of a masochist given the construction that would entail, but....

After reviewing the scope of the project, it was estimated that it would take a week and a half to complete. Not only did it take over a month to eventually complete, the days that the team would work were unpredictable. On several occasions, as the team would leave for the day, they would tell us they will be back tomorrow, and then not show up. Or, they wouldn't be able to tell us when they would come next, and would surprise us a few days later. They ended up needing to complete this project after I had delivered my baby (original timeline would've been completed weeks prior to my due date). Additionally, we noticed there were a few design decisions that were made without consulting us, like the drywall of the shower/re-installation of the water gauge (it's now not flush with the wall and very loose) and the selection of tile at the base of the shower that doesn't match the floor. He had offered to come fix the water gauge, but after coming to look at the issue, he has not gotten back to us in 5 weeks. I had high hopes for this project, and while it still looks nice, the lack of communication made it really difficult to want to recommend Peter or use his team again for future projects.

The finished piece's dimensions are only 11" x 24"-- so QUITE small in the grand scheme of things. Several vendors I had called previously informed me that they don't take on such niche projects. Custom Marble Design, however, were the first to respond and went above and beyond in their customer service, execution, and workmanship. As soon as they received my inquiry, they extended an invite to visit their location and shop thru available remnants. When I arrived, I was personally escorted around the premises and shown a variety of options (multiple stone types and color variations.) I had lots of questions-- all of which were answered thoroughly and kindly. Even though I arrived about 30 minutes before closing time (I received their invite while I was running errands & headed straight over), I never felt rushed or dismissed. My "little project" was treated with the utmost care & respect. This location also offered me a flat rate price for the project, so there were no hidden fees or complications regarding the stone I selected or my finishing parameters. I officially placed my order (stone selection and project specs) on Tuesday and was shocked to learn that it was ready for pick up that Friday. I just picked up the finished stonework today & could not be more pleased with the results! The order was completed to my exact specifications & finished with care. When I told them that I'd carry the piece to my car they insisted on taking it out for me. Everyone I encountered at this business (in person & via email) was exceptionally attentive, professional, and kind. (Special thanks to Bojan & Jovan and their fabulous fabricators!) Follyn created a "duplex down" turning a previously unfinished part of the basement into a family room, and remodeled the offices for our family business. The project also involved removing and rebuilding our rear porches and enclosed stairwell, as well as remodeling a bathroom, adding a powder room, and gutting and relaying our kitchen and our daughter's bedroom. We used an architect who created great plans, but John's vision and creativity have given us so much more usable space, and beautifully carried our dreams to fruition. We are so glad we entrusted our project to John. His honesty and work ethic are rare. Our architect recommended him initially. Her words were "I think you will find him quite capable." She was so right. We have this old house, and any unusual findings were nothing that gave John pause. To create a legal duplex, we needed to separate our stairwell from the 2nd floor apartment, and move all electrical panels out of the basement. Our gorgeous custom iron spiral staircase and rolling-shutter door concealing electrical panels and meters accomplished this. He tore off our old frame, vinyl sided, 2-level back porch and stairwell structure, and rebuilt it with a brick base and durable Hardie Board siding. The former crawl space was excavated to give us a mud room, huge coat closet, and an under-the-stair storage room. Our porch, which we use quite a bit could not increase in size, but still needed to make better use of the space. This was achieved by eliminating a door and suspending the grill off of the custom iron rails. Our basement was dug down to give us another 12-14 inches of ceiling height-- not easy to do with our shared driveway, no alley, and horrible parking in Lakeview East. This involved supporting our home with temporary columns and putting footings deeper and extending our iron columns to meet the new footings, adding radiant floor heating-- and then pouring concrete. John's expertise in sewers, drains, and a pumps will keep us safe from flooding. All structural elements of our home were inspected and repaired where necessary. Our home is over 100 years old, and is poised to last at least that long going forward. Our kitchen was completely remodeled-flipping the old cooking and dining areas. This gave us two new beautiful and better functioning spaces. All of the cabinets are customwood and were very competitively priced. Follyn Builders has a vast list of excellent sources that they go to for materials and custom work. Their sources offer sharp pricing for quality work. John selects and works with a wonderful team of subcontractors. They are all pros whom I enjoyed being around when I was home. Even still, if something wasn't quite right, John would point it out to us first and then have it corrected. He had our backs every step of the way. Ann does an incredible job with materials management and all of the behind-the-scenes action like parking permits, etc. On the very rare occasion where John is not available, Ann is also very capable on-site as well. Whether she is supervising an installation, or prioritizing the tasks of subcontractors to keep the work flow efficient, she is an experienced pro. I could go on... I checked references before hiring Follyn and heard similar praise. Then, I walked a Follyn project that was nearing completion and was totally sold. I was completely blown away by the level of craftsmanship from the multi-piece molding and custom built-ins to the state-of-the-art technology that today's homes demand. Friends have asked me if the stress of construction got to me. My answer is always that I had the time of my life, and although I am excited to have our home completed, I miss the activity, and the excitement of seeing the conversion at the hands of people who are so talented. Five stars is not nearly enough for Follyn Builders and Developers!

That, along with a few other cautions, set our expectations before starting our project with Kitchen & Baths Unlimited. For my wife and me, however, the experience turned out very differently. We cannot say enough great things about Nancy (design), Owen (project management) and the entire team that meticulously executed the remodel. While I work from home and my wife commutes downtown, we decided to move forward with gutting and remodeling the vintage kitchen in our 100-year-old farmhouse in Evanston--and we couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Yes, the demolition phase was a bit loud, as expected. But after that, the usual construction noise--hammering and drilling--was manageable. The team did an excellent job minimizing disruption: adjacent rooms were carefully sealed to contain dust, wood floors were protected with panels, and window treatments were wrapped in plastic. Design selections were also made easy thanks to Nancy, who guided us through choosing colors, cabinets, and countertops that matched our vision. The result is a beautiful transformation from a neglected, dingy farmhouse kitchen into a bright, modern farmhouse space. The Italian tile backsplash complements the quartz countertops with subtle veining. The lower cabinets are a soft gray, while the upper cabinets are white, creating a clean and balanced look. We also upgraded our appliances and fixtures, including LED ceiling lights, a Bosch microwave drawer, a professional KitchenAid range with a matching hood featuring an infrared sensor, and a modern stainless-steel farmhouse sink with a gentle bow. Despite an initial delay with the permit office due to a previously applied for permit that KBU helped us manage, the project stayed on schedule. We made a few minor upgrades along the way, but thanks to Owen and Nancy's guidance, we remained on time and within our overall budget. The KBU crew was professional, punctual, and highly skilled. Communication was seamless--especially since I was working from home--which helped address questions quickly and keep the project moving efficiently. In the end, we passed all inspections and received written approval from the village within a day. For us, this remodel was a great success. Thank you to Nancy, Owen, Patricia, Rade, and the entire team! You are the BEST!

I can't say enough wonderful things about Michael and his team. I had two projects done by them-- a master bathroom remodel in 2023, and then my guest bathroom a year later because I was so impressed with their work. They were reasonably priced and were transparent about cost, even when I decided mid-project to upgrade some things that weren't in the original plan. They finished both projects ahead of schedule-- this was a shock to me because most home improvement projects take longer than expected! They paid close attention to detail and the finished product is absolutely incredible. My upstairs neighbors were so impressed, they plan to use them as well for their home projects this year. Since the deck replacement, we have used Carpentry by Michael for two additional home improvement projects. Stanley gave me the timeframe and was honest about the timeframe for our bathroom job, but he also guaranteed that the job would be done in the timeframe we needed. We had to go with a new tile because the tile in the bathroom before was outdated and unavailable. He kept the price in the range that we needed it to be. Looking at the finished product I can't put into words how good of a job they had done. Redoing the wall, the bathroom tiles, and the tiling by the shower was all done correctly and they made sure to clean up everything when they were done. After I saw the work, I'm glad I paid a little extra. The steps are bigger and wider. There is more detail: such as rounding the edges of the steps, larger screws, thicker wood, etc. that make the porch look much nicer and sturdier. It makes my house look nicer.

We had a 1-year-old baby around during the work, so they made sure everything was sealed off and safe. The final product was incredible. The bathroom is now my favorite room in our house (we hated it before). I can't speak enough about the overall team, their communication, their work -- you name it. I definitely recommend to anybody.
