As a chain store, this Michaels is just like all the rest. Artsy-fartsy stuff, lots of interior décor, fabrics, paper, etc. You can make just about anything with what they have here as long as it doesn't require heavy duty drilling and the kind of stuff you need from a Lowe's. Unfortunately, I feel the place is quite overpriced. There is uniqueness and variety here and you may find some things here that you won't find anywhere else in a brick and mortar store. I ended up returning some colored pencils because I found plenty of other options that work great for cheap at other stores. I was surprised even to find things more affordably priced at Barnes & Noble, arguably another specialty store. I didn't have much interaction with staff but have nothing bad to say. Everyone working here seems to be just getting by. I wouldn't call it service with a smile but there's no rudeness either. I will generally only come back here when I need something very specific that I know would be hard to find elsewhere.

(6/9/13) I'd never had a picture framed at Michael's. For a number of years I had used another gallery across from the Park Road shopping center. Then there was a lull... My wife started working for Michael's and got to know the head of the framing department. She suggested that we have a watercolor of my parents' former house reframed. I brought the watercolor up to the store on Sunday afternoon. I arrived a bit early and brought it to the framing center. The framing manager's name is Steve. Steve has been with Michael's for a very long time & is very capable with helping customers to choose the perfect combination of mats & frames. Michael's has an interesting computerized system where the artwork is photographed & digitized. It is then displayed on a computer with the chosen mats & frames. It makes it a lot easier to visualize the finished piece. Steve worked with my wife and I for about an hour. I think we will soon have a reframed picture that we will be proud of.

They are stocked for Christmas needs.

Come here for all of your arts & craft needs. I was just tagging along on this trip, but they have it all covered. The employees are nice enough, but the store was so busy, the check out line took a very long time. I dont think they had enough people staffed. One thing I didnt care for is that the aisles are pretty thin. Yeah, they dont have much space here that isn't being used, but when a few people are in am aisle, things get really tight. Other than that, you will have a nice visit if you are there during a slow period. But I would get your holiday stuff early to avoid these issues.

    My completed framing project!

You can bring anything you can buy in a grocery store. Just make sure you ask the price structure upfront because there's the price of the figure, plus the amount of time you're there. So I would recommend going early to get a table. They have a TON of pottery pieces to choose from including plates, vases, seasonal decorations, piggy banks, spoon rests, I mean you name it & they have it. I chose a Christmas plate for my son to put cookies on for Santa. You choose your own paint and have the freedom to kind of do what you want. They also have paint pens for more accurate drawing or writing words, you just have to ask up front. FYI - it takes up to 30 days to get your pottery back from the oven which I thought was quite a long time. Can't wait to see the finished product!

There were about 4 workers on the floor and ALL of them were helping someone (another good sign since the store had good business) so it gave me a chance to walk the store. After I did my lap I was starting to wonder when someone would notice me when the worker on the phone came over to help. First thing Jodi pointed out was how to find a coordinating color; teaching me that it was about drawing similar colors to coordinate rather than finding perfect matches. She did a great job of helping other customers while helping me out. Eventually, using her advice, I found a fabric and they helped me calculate how much I would need. Being a newbie to the DIY re-upholstering world I was filled with odd questions and they never made me feel out of place or unwelcome. They brought out my 1.5 yd of fabric wrapped with a bow and packaged in protective plastic. While paying Jodi was EXTREMELY sweet and made me feel very comfortable. I look forward to more projects just so I can shop here. Oh, and prices are industry standards so you won't find 40% deals like Joannes (which my cheap butt prefers) or anything but I was still willing to pay full price due to quality and customer service.

My friend and I went here for the first time over the weekend (Nov 23) thanks to a living social…read moredeal we bought a month earlier. We had no expectations for the place since we've never been any place similar. Tipsy Paintbrush is a BYOB art studio that offers weekly classes focusing on various pictures and is available for private parties. There's also a rotating list of artists that teach the classes and offer painting techniques. On the day we attended, our class was full and picture of the night was sunflowers. It's a bright but small studio space. Parking is to be found on the street (namely Charles street which is located behind the studio) since the place only has four to five spaces to its name. There are rows of tables and stools with canvasses that have a sketch of the picture already drawn out. Classes are two hours. As for BYOB, you can bring bottles of wine/beer/spiked cider, etc that can be either be kept at your station or at the back to be shared with the rest of the class. Also, you can bring in snacks (various dips/salsas/crackers/popcorn/cheeses/etc). There are plastic cups and wine glasses available should you not bring any of your own (we brought in our own glasses). The only gripe I have is that the personal station space is pretty tight. In between having space for the canvas, paint, water glass, wine glass/beer bottle, and possible snack, there's not much room to put everything. Once class begins, the instructor will walk you through the science of color mixing and different techniques to bring the painting to life. The most important thing to remember is to have fun. It's just paint! Don't go in with such a critical view of how your work comes out. Our instructor of the night was Gina and she was great. She was really patient and offered some good painting tips! I HIGHLY recommend the Tipsy Paintbrush for a fun night out!

The two instructors chose to delay starting the class untill all participants arrived. The class was scheduled to last two hours. After thirty minutes (at 7:30), the class had STILL not started. That is one fourth of the scheduled class time wasted because of late participants. I had other plans after nine o' clock, so I had to leave without painting, A few people should not be allowed to waste the time of people who show up on time. Very bad policy! I was an art teacher for 25 years, and if people were late for class, I would help them catch up....NOT hold up instruction for the majority. I lost my money....not going back! I agree with another reviewer that too many participants were scheduled so the space was simply too tight.

Alrighty fibre friends!…read more Let me tell you, how excited I was to find a yarn store in Waxhaw that carried hand spun yarns and more! This fabulous store has something for everyone, from Merino, alpaca, silk selection, Nylon/acrylic blends, cotton and more. The color options? Endless! The quality? Superb! And the environment presented and directed by staff? Outstanding. What I love about this store: you can feel the stories and love that goes into textile here. You can see swatches, see finished projects like cardigans, sweaters, and shawls. You can pick two skeins up and see the difference! And when I say "difference" I mean the color blends. While single colors provide a great unity. The blends have a uniqueness that is just not obtainable from commercial retail. Making any project you create unified or a one of a kind piece. This place feels like a gem. Organized and the variety is huge on all fronts. The yarn here isn't just yarn. It's a story, it's a feeling, emotion, and gives wonder to the eyes. I spent a solid half hour just walking with my jaw open going "wow... Oh wow!" Because of the love and care that goes into these precious goods, and the quality of yarn. Price point is definitely reasonable as suggested. You really cannot put a price on hand spun yarn, but if I had to do so, I would say this place is the fairest I have seen in the Carolina's. If nothing else it is worth a trip just to see the various types. Definitely worth a trip for prospective fiber artists to get an idea of material, culture, and put a feel to the materials many of us learn in college. In addition this store offers yarn from around the world. Peru, and japan to name a couple off the top of my head. Thanks to Debby (apologies for improper spelling) for making my visit feel magical and friendly. I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful experience today, and I cannot wait to come back soon to further grow my stash aka Hoard of yarns! Overall I would give the following rating: Price: 5/5 Environment: 5/5 Knowledgeable staff: 5/5 Organization: 5/5 Quality of goods: 5/5.

No, the staff is not greeting everyone at the door, but they were helpful when needed and incredibly knowledgeable and courteous.
