This is my favorite Michael's location by far. They tend to be fully stocked, and even when the item isn't available it is. If that makes sense. There's always something similar to find and getting lost in those aisles is addictive. An hour later you're walking out with paint, blank canvases, and an array of brushes to fuel a brand-new obsession. I spun a random afternoon looking for jewelry twine into a painting hobby which blossomed into a custom art side gig. Craft stores are magical and you couldn't convince me otherwise. I don't usually update reviews, until they are a year old, but I just couldn't let this story go. I have pined away for the Haunted House by Lemax for a long time. They were out of stock at two other Michael's stores. I had a hard time trying to rationalize the price. This week, they went on sale! I went into this Michael's rationalizing, if they have the haunted house, it is meant to be. And, if they don't, then, I just wasn't supposed to get it! Well, I walked in and they had One Left. So, I did what any good customer would do- I bought it! This is the best stocked Michael's I have ever seen. Even though, it is all self checkout, there was a nice lady there to help. Somehow, a new Fall sign, some cute critters, a Halloween ghost, and my most prized Lemax Haunted House all joined me for the ride home. Stephanie who is a part-time manager, was patient and willing to help me locate everything needed for my project quickly and effectively. Also, Stephanie had a willingness to help and held a willingness to ask questions about my project, which served to better help me. Even when it was getting close to closing-time in the the store, she did not make me feel rushed. She was empathetic to my needs as a client, and was extremely kind, caring and professional. I do not see that type of mindset in retail stores, but she was outstanding which is why I was happy to fill out this survey. I have been stopping at way too many of these stores recently, I need to stop. I don't usually go into one unless it is for an item that I know I won't be able to find elsewhere. Or if I know it is an item that would be easier to locate in a store like this. With Christmas coming up I had a few items on nieces wish lists that I knew I would be able to find here fairly quickly. It wouldn't hurt to do a quick once over of the picture frames either, they sometimes have a pretty decent sale on frames. I did a quick search for the gift items and made a quick trip back to framing section. Without much difficulty I was able to find a picture frame in the size I wanted, but not necessarily need. Ordered some balloons for my daughter's birthday party for this weekend. Upon picking up the balloons we noticed that one of the mermaid balloons was drastically under inflated. We asked the employee if they could please put some more helium into the balloon and she replied that, "we don't do that!". Unfortunately Party City has closed down, so options for balloons in this area are limited. Will be looking to take our business elsewhere next time and I suggest you do some research for ordering from this Michaels. read more

It's truly sad to see poor management trickle down to poor customer service among the sales associates. A sale sign was still up that wasn't registering at self checkout. When I pointed out there was a sale sign to the associate, the associate wouldn't even bother to go look at it with me, just plainly said, no it's not on sale. I went and took a photo, showed her the photo of the sign, and she said you'll need my store manager's approval since it expired yesterday. Spoke with store manager who tried to not honor the sign, pointing out numbers on the sign to show how it expired. Those numbers are not for customers, those numbers are for the associates so they know when to take down the sign. They forgot to take down a sign, their mistake. But rather than admit that, she claimed they'd been busy fulfilling online orders all morning and wouldn't honor the sign. I pressed for the appropriate customer service and she said rudely, fine, but just this once. Having worked retail for years, this was truly disappointing to see. Not to mention, the self checkout is awful. There are never any bags present and it is just another step away from having any customer service interaction. Michael's needs to reevaluate. read more

It's ruined by self checkout where you are watched like a hawk by someone who would be more helpful running a register, feel rushed because of the long line of irritated people waiting behind you, and can't wrap anything fragile because there are no supplies, space, or time. The worst service, they sell many breakable items such as glass bottles and vases. However, when you check out there is no paper available to wrap them in to take them home. They just throw them in the plastic bag with all other bought items. They shouldn't sell anything that is so easily breakable without having the ability to secure it for the customers. read more

This is probably the slowest Michael's I've been into. Granted... I've been in like maybe 1 or 2 Michael's prior to this one. No big problems at all with this locale, it's right in the Kentlands, plenty of parking. The sales associates have been nice. So why the 4 stars. Two minor issues. 1. I know that the Men's Room at a Michael's might not be the most utilized space in the known world... but it just was not as clean as I hoped it would be. It sort of smelled pretty atrocioius. I think the smell might have been coming from the urinal. 2. I think they keep a lower staff on because the store seems pretty slow. It just makes finding help a little difficult. Overall, issues that won't prevent me from coming back. Note: If you sign up for Michael's emails... yeah... you'll get a lot of emails. And by a lot, I really mean A LOT. But you'll also get crazy large coupons ALL THE TIME. Like 40 percent off on one item ( like most of the time). It's totally worth it if you shop at crafts stores with any regularity. read more

There is a great selection of seasonal decor to be had here. I found several Fall decorations for my desk as well as some accessories for my Halloween costume. The staff is both helpful and plentiful. The only thing that could be approved are the rather outdated manual doors. Now I know this doesn't seem like a big deal, but it is pretty hard to push a cart with oversized scarecrows out of the door while trying to manually open. But seriously-what about mothers with strollers or someone who is wheelchair bound? Please Invest in automatic doors. read more

Repeatly we have had a horrible checkout experience. I'm not sure why the cashiers and managers are so openly rude. They want you to do self checkout and are annoyed if you don't. If you do self checkout, they don't provide bags. If you ask for bags they rudely remind you to scan the bag codes to pay for the bags. This time, the woman, I'm assuming the manager, tried to take our bags and give them to an another customer. When we said, no we got them for ourselves, we may still need them--the manager aggressively approached our register and manually added the cost of all the bags. We told her we don't know yet how many we will need, she didn't care and charged us anything anyway. When an item needed a correction bc of we scanned it twice, we asked for help. The other cashier said, "she's so rude" loudly to the other customers. We were just trying to get out of there. I didn't even scan my coupons. If this is was the kind of experience that only happened once, I wouldn't leave a bad review. Either this is a problem at the corporate level with your customer service training, or this is a problem at the Kentlands management specifically. Low staffed location, it was very difficult for me to find someone to assist me and it took a few minutes to search through the aisles and find what I was looking for. When I finally found someone she was pleasant and helped me pick out what I needed. A lot of the items were on clearance with their end of the season sale. The walkways were slim with the amount of items displayed in the middle of the walk space. They're located in Kentlands with plenty of open space to park. I wanted some help with frames for my JD diploma. The lady at the register was super kind and referred me to the Frames Department. However the representatives at the register were utterly dismissive and seemed bothered that I (a customer) was present. First incident of poor customer service: I came and greeted and said excuse me, to which i was ignored by both elderly ladies. After waiting for them to end their seemingly personal and never ending conversation about their "plans" I again tried to get the attention of the lady behind the counter to which she asks me to hold a second as she continued playing on her computer screen. When she finally decided to do her job, she pointed me to a sea of frames "saying right there" I asked for further clarification as pointing in a general direction is not the most helpful way to communicate. She then begrudgingly walks out of the register and points. At no point did she try to actually assist me. As a was leaving the kind lady at the front of the store asked if i got everything, i told her no and explained why. She tried to remedy the situation but I was already unwilling to remain in that Michael's anymore. To the lady who actually tried to help me at the register, I thank you for not only being an amazing person for trying to remedy an obviously bad customer service experience but I genuinely thank you for trying to help and providing great customer service. read more

I don't normally have negative experiences in these stores but after tonight I feel the need to write a review here. Earlier in the day, I bought a spray can at a different Micheal's. While working in my project, the can started leaking and it spilled everywhere. The button stopped working. I wrapped it up and put it inside a shopping bag to exchange for another one. I decided to go to this store since I was going to be in the area. I went to the front register with my receipt and can of spray in a bag. Spoke with the associate and explained what happened. She was very sweet and told me that she needs to speak to her manager first. Sure, no problem. The manager approached me with a rude attitude that was not necessary. I explained what happened again and all she had to say was that the can is empty return to the other store. Really? Anyways, I called the other Michael's and asked that manager, Jessica, the policy and procedure for damaged cans. Guess what? If the manager at this store had taken the time to explain this nicely without the attitude, I wouldn't be writing this review right now. It's an $8 can. I can afford to buy another one not trying to get one passed by you ma'am. read more

They are always well stocked, clean, well organized and I can usually flag down a helpful person to answer my insanely stupid doubts about how to take my new DIY project to the next level. . heh! Most people that work here are very knowledgeable and are usually willing to spend more than 5 seconds answering my questions - which can be very asinine, i tell you! This Michaels is one of my favorite locations. Always stocked and friendly associates. As an Etsy shop owner I often feel like I get most of my supplies plus more for a great deal! Came to this location to purchase a specific item that wasn't marked on sale in store but was online. To Whom It May Concern, I just visited you Kentlands location and I am very disheartened. My interaction with who I presume was the store manager was less than great, honestly it wasn't even ok. I was being ran up by an older gentleman, I had a lot of items and there were others waiting in line so he called for backup. Then appeared who I presume was the store manager as she walked by us she gave my husband and I the most unpleasant look. It was as if we were not welcomed. Then she began to ring up other customers. While the older gentleman was ringing me up one of the sandals I was purchasing didn't have a barcode he quietly said oh this one is missing a barcode and put that item to the side. This is when the manager inserted herself in the transaction despite helping the customer standing in front of her. She yelled over that I would have to go fin another pair exactly like it. I asked even though I have the same size of that shoe just in different colors? Now mind you all the shoes cost the same $8 and the were ALL on sale underneath a sign for 70% off. So I was made to go back and dig through the pile and find the exact pair. When the cashier rung it up and it came to the same price as the two other pairs I bought. So I said it was the same price and the manager had nothing to say, no apology, nothing. I felt like she tried to embarrass and belittle me. If I was a white woman she would not have treated me this way. It was clear in her looks at us and the way she interacted with us she has a problem with African American people. I think she needs to take a sensitivity training because that was horrible. You would think being a loyal customer would get you treated fairly but it does not. read more

Unbelievably rude service from the woman behind the framing desk. I wanted a specific frame for my son's diploma but it didn't fit because the mat size opening was too small. I brought it to her and asked if she had a different mat size and she said yes. Barely looked at me, measured it, entered into the computer and told me how much it would be. I started to pay then she said something about coming back later, so I said I was going to take the mat and do it myself to give my son today. She said no they're custom ordered so I said that wouldn't work so she got up and walked away, didn't say anything else! read more

They were out of at least half of the supplies that I needed, and when I asked to sign up for the senior discount, I was told that I had to sign up online. I fold them that online it says that you must sign up in store, and customer service reps in India say that you must sign up in store. Noooo, they just got nastier. If I do shop there again, it's only because I have no other choice. They REALLY need better staff & management! If you need to find something, they'll tell you what aisle, and even if they aren't busy, they will not help you find what you need. There is no reason...and no excuse for being nasty, rude, and lazy. That's just not how business works! P.S. You can find great craft supply stores on eBay! They are helpful & affordable! Every time I visit Michael's I think "never again" and then relent because I want to support local business and maybe the labor/stocking/service issues are COVID related and maybe I got them at a bad time. I'm sort of done done this go around. The staff don't know the stock (of note in a craft/ art supply shop); the stock is shelved in disarray; bright young staff are indeed available, however, to direct you to self check out (no paper or boxes available for fragile items) and "keep the line moving!" but not actually man one of the empty registers. In fact they betray dismay or confusion if you want to pay cash. A common answer is "you can shop on line and pick it up here". And they wonder why brick & mortar stores are closing. Bottom line : an unpleasant and unproductive shopping experience. There are thing out of this store's control but pleasant customer service is merely a function of courtesy and caring. This location is awful! Incredibly rude staff. They were giving me a hard time about an order that I wanted to return (it was brand new and had only been purchased online a week ago). I couldn't find the packing slip, but I had the order confirmation email so I thought that would be fine, but they were acting as though they couldn't just use the confirmation email to look up my order, making the whole process take longer than necessary. They finally gave me back my refund after asking me a million different questions - this is usually never an issue at most businesses! Michael's is perfect for all art supplies and seasonal decor. They offer great discounts (40% off coupons). I recently got into calligraphy, so I came to purchase some black brush pens. I was recommended Tombow, but was surprised to see that a pack of 2 pens was $9! I waited until I could use a coupon, then was able to save $3. The pens are really good quality, perfect for a beginner like myself. read more

Definitely heavy on the scrapbooking stuff, and less on the things that I actually need a craft store for...like a variety of paints, brushes and epoxies (they have them, just not a huge selection). First time at this Michael's we walked in looks clean and organized however we go ask an employee where an item was and I'm assuming it was a manager that rudely interrupted us complaining about an customer that dumped glitter all over the floor and complaining about her car being hit in the parking lot by a shopping cart. We continued shopping I had to use the restroom I was washing my hands and I the lady next to my stall came out it was the same lady that was complaining about customers she didn't even wash her hands !! I swear if it was restaurant I would have went to the owner. How disgusting how do you complain about others and you dirty and you the manager. Smh won't be returning to that location read more

Store is not ADA accessible. Mark Malatesta, District Manager for Michael's had the store manager clean up the aisles in the winter to make it accessible to people in wheelchairs, on crutches, visually impaired and require the use of a sensing cane, or heck, anyone of the 69% of Americans who are overweight or obese (source: CDC, 2013)---or anyone who doesn't mind a 12 inch clearing space between breakable glass containers and breakable frames, etc....sigh----but the store went backward under current management, who clearly couldn't maintain the standard. But nothing excuses Managers Behaving Badly. Steer clear of mgr "Sarah." On our outing today, we asked about a new, current coupon for "paper craft storage." She said my item was not eligible. I asked how it's determined. She said, it's for storage. I said, the box has the word storage on it! She said, if we had a bookshelf, would I expect a book sale? Um...what? A) you didn't answer my question, and b) I wasn't asking about paper on sale, to complete her ridiculous analogy. I asked about a paper craft storage item that actually said the words "paper," "craft" and "storage" on it! Calling Mark Malatesta's cell phone...he gave me he number last winter for such an occasion as this. Hopefully he can guide the store back on track. On another note, the Germantown store is week managed and has appropriate spacing for people with or without disabilities to maneuver around. We live in the Kentlands, but if we can't get even a basely acceptable amount of service or courtesy (or adherence to federal laws, for example), then perhaps it's time to go elsewhere. It isn't like michaels is involved in the local community like other businesses in our neighborhood.... PS....if anyone finds the answer to what they determine is "paper craft storage" please let me know! Apparently the words "paper," "craft," and "storage" are not enough.
