    Bubble

I was visiting from out of town and was taken here as a surprise and oh man. What an amazing experience! This place is old school diner-like. Makes you think of older times and honestly makes you really crave ice cream. When we got there I was told I have to get the Bubble. It's ice cream, chocolate sauce, marshmallow, and roasted peanuts. Guys. GUYS. Game changer. Literally a 12/10. The marshmallow and the peanuts are the real stars here. You know the best part of a Reese's? That bite you get in the middle of just pure peanut butter bliss? That's this. The ice cream and chocolate are the perfect palette helpers here but man that peanut butter marshmallow combo is where it's at! Loved it so much spoke about it for a year and made it a "we need to go there again" on my list of things to do in Ohio. Both times I've been here the staff has been absolutely lovely. Parking was easy. Street parking is available. Will talk about this dessert randomly in the near future or until I get another one (was told they can ship these ingredients for you to make your own!!!)

A bubble. So help me, a bubble!

I heard rumors about this place for years. "You have to go there and have a bubble," they'd decree. What the hell is a bubble? It turns out that it is an ice cream concoction for the ages. Now let's be clear...this place has all the hallmarks of a small town lunch counter. Stools along a high-topped counter with lots of woodwork, stand mixers, hand-pump dispensers for things like hot fudge, etc. George Bailey may have cooked up his schemes to get out of Bedford Falls here. But this place has so much more. Fresh roasted peanuts. Fresh ground peanuts for the ice creams. Locally made sodas from Gem Bottling like Ski. And they have the vaunted "Jackson veal," though down the road it will be called Wellston veal. Candies and t-shirts are in here for us touristy types. In any event, the bubble: an ice cream delight served up in a sundae glass. You can get it to go, but don't, unless you have one at the counter and then have another in the car. The treat is made with some chocolate, some peanuts, some marshmallow cream, some ice cream, and a requirement that too much is served to fit into the glass. The long handled spoon will not stop you from making a mess. Eat well. Worth noting...pizza, hot dogs, and other sandwiches are available. Also worth noting, no matter what you do in Jackson, Ohio, you must go to this place so that it will be around for another century or so. So good. So very, very good.

The whole time I lived in Athens, people would tell me I needed to drive to Jackson to try a "Bubble" at Michael's Ice Cream Shop. I never made the time, but on my way home today I decided to take a break from driving and stop by. HOLY ICE CREAM LOVER!!! I felt transported back in time to a cute 50s soda shoppe. The wonderful staff recommended the traditional "bubble" (see picture below). Delicious is an understatement! Definitely going to be making return trips

The Bubble is all it's cracked up to be. Choice of ice cream, chocolate sauce, marshmallow sauce and fresh crushed roasted peanuts. I really think the peanuts - roasted on site - make the dessert. I saw an employee recommendation for a Butter Pecan Bubble and it was amazing. The food is ok, but the ice cream is the highlight. Bacon cheddar fries are pretty good, loaded down with the good stuff.

Left home early before breakfast for a crack of dawn meeting in Jackson so I was very pleased to…read moresee a cafe with breakfast getting good ratings on Yelp. Folks weren't lying. The Spot on Main Cafe fits the bill with a terrific warm pretzel breakfast sandwich with a large sausage patty and melted gouda. I'm pretty skeptical of sausage patties as they are typically thin, dry, and hockey puck-like. This one was none of those things. The large latte was robust in size and taste. Tasteful and super clean interior with good but not too loud music. Helpful service advising on choices (the bacon and swiss on a croissant was a close second when deciding what to get). Went for the pretzel which too wasn't the typically dry, hard, experience that requires incisor driven tearing to eat. I include a picture from the bathroom, definitely a first. But hanging on the inside of the door was a Scandinavia style high chair to have kiddos sit when you are otherwise occupied in this spotless bathroom. Two tables out front with shades and other tables around the corner in the back as well. Plenty of space inside but if you want to get outside to enjoy the morning coffee, that's an option. I'll definitely be back next time I have business in Jackson.

We stopped in for an early lunch, which they serve all day. Everything on the menu looked delicious and prices are reasonable. I had a bowl of the chicken and rice soup. The soup was thick and creamy with lots of vegetables and delicious. My husband loved the Club Sandwich which was packed with ham, bacon, avocado, lettuce and tomato. Service was a bit confusing as one of the clerks told me to sit down and brought a menu. But she never came back to take our order and we figured out we had to go up to the counter to order. I guess the regulars know this. The place is popular, there's a line to order and most tables full. They have a nice patio out back with tables. Inside, there are about 15 tables. It gets loud inside when they are full. They sell their locally roasted coffee in the shop along with other coffee related gifts. There is street parking out front and a handicapped access at the rear entrance.

I recently saw a post on Ohio Trips' Facebook page about a charming little bakery tucked away in…read moresouthern Ohio called Four Mile Bakery. As a former chef and someone who creates food videos for my YouTube channel, I'm always searching for hidden diners, cafés, and bakeries that deserve more attention. Supporting local Ohio businesses is something I'm passionate about, so I made the drive to Jackson to see what all the buzz was about. The bakery sits along a quiet country road across from a picturesque farm with goats, horses, and cows, making the drive there part of the experience. When I walked inside, I discovered it's much more than a bakery--it's also a country general store stocked with homemade jams, jellies, sauces, and other locally made goodies. But let's be honest... the real reason for my visit was the doughnuts. Instead of the typical display case, Four Mile Bakery has a doughnut buffet where you put on plastic gloves and pick out your own favorites. It's a fun concept that lets you really take your time looking over all the incredible options. While I was filming, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Shawn. He couldn't have been more welcoming. He shared the story of the bakery, how many of their recipes were developed, and the passion that goes into what they make every day. Then came the highlight of my visit--their signature Wagon Wheel doughnut. This giant glazed doughnut is unlike any I've ever had. Most oversized doughnuts tend to be heavy, bread-like, and dense. Not this one. Somehow they've mastered the art of making it unbelievably light and airy with an almost cotton-candy-like texture. It practically melts in your mouth. It's one of the best doughnuts I've ever eaten. They also offer an impressive variety of doughnuts with all kinds of toppings and flavors, so there's something for everyone. Although they serve lunch items as well, I didn't have enough time to try them on this visit. We picked up several doughnuts along with a few items from the general store, thanked Shawn for his hospitality, and headed home. Four Mile Bakery is exactly the kind of hidden gem I love discovering. Great people, incredible homemade doughnuts, and a beautiful country setting make it well worth the drive. If you're anywhere near Jackson--or even if you're not--make the trip. The Wagon Wheel alone is worth it. P.S. Unfortunately, my camera's microphone decided to quit working during my visit, so most of the footage I captured is without sound. I guess that's just a good excuse to make another trip back to Four Mile Bakery... and somehow I don't think I'll mind having to eat another Wagon Wheel!

The owner was so friendly and told us about his business and history. The donuts are absolutely huge. I also bought some sauces and jams that look great. There is a cute a candle shop next them that a local lady runs. She makes her own candles and wax melts. She was just the cutest, sweetest lady and so very friendly. I HIGHLY recomnend going to both of these locations in Jackson Ohio.
