I am so grateful to Casco Bay EyeCare! Last Spring, I had an accident with one of my eyes while…read moreshaving. It was scary, I thought I might lose my vision which was getting blurry and deteriorating in just a couple of weeks. Since I was on Cape Cod dog sitting, I drove up to the Mass Eye and Ear emergency room in Boston. What a shocking disappointment, their ancient equipment looked left over from the Civil War and their ER doctors were literally running from room to room. After that strange appointment, I was more anxious about my vision. Then I thought to call and make an appointment with Casco Bay EyeCare in Portland. I'm a long time independent Medicare agent and have lots of Maine clients who are happy patients there. A week later, with little sleep and stressed out, I drove over three hours for an appointment with Dr. Amy Cyr. I entered their beautiful Old Port offices, hopeless and exhausted. I asked one of the front desk gals for a hug. Dr. Cyr led me into her office which was so clean, her equipment looked brand new and as up to date as could be. Dr. Cyr put me at ease right away and said she could help me. She spent over an hour examining my eyes from every angle, with the latest equipment that Mass Eye and Ear ER did not have! I had one of the worst cases of dry eye Dr. Cyr had ever seen, my eyes were a mess with irritation and thus the blurriness. I left the appointment with hope restored and deep gratitude. I immediately began a daily regimen of preservative-free eye drops in both eyes several times a day, which I continue to this day. My eyes retuned to normal within a week of my appointment with Dr. Cyr. On a follow up visit a few weeks later, I brought a bouquet of flowers for my eye hero, Dr. Amy Cyr and the good gals at the front desk. To me, the team at Casco Bay EyeCare in the Old Port, are eye angels. Thank you, above all, Dr. Cyr and also Kaylin, Liz and Debbie. Thank you.

My two children and I had eye exams here, but our insurance doesn't cover frames just the exams…read more After I told them that I would be purchasing glasses online because there was no way I could afford even one pair of their glasses they were very rude and the tech's tried to refuse to do our PD measurements. After some convincing they begrudgingly agreed. They did my two kids, but when they got to me, I noticed they held the PD machine at a strange angle and the measurement came back much different than my previous PD. I asked if they were sure they did it right and they responded with a very curt 'I know how to do my job' I got a more recent eye exam at a different place and they confirmed my PD measurement never changed and that the people at Casco Bay had botched the measurement purposely because I wasn't buying their glasses.

I cancelled this order and got a refund and now have to go find something someplace else .. minus two stars for this ..

Excellent experience! This was my first time here, I was greeted promptly upon entry by a very…read morefriendly person behind the desk. I was there for a full eye exam (eye health as well as a new lens prescription). The tech I had wasn't unfriendly, but efficient and nice, but no small talk--totally fine, I was happy to rest my voice (some people say I talk too much anyway). After a few different rooms, machines, flashing lights and reading wall charts I waited to see my doctor. Dr. Young was my doctor this past visit and I couldn't have been more pleased with her clear, caring, and thoughtful approach. Thorough, but not at the cost of being careful. I was provided my perscription and (like any good museum), walked out through the "gift shop". I enjoyed the browsing and found a few frames that were to my liking. I didn't purchase anything on this visit--I'm shopping around since I have two good frames at the moment that just need lenses. But the sales person/optometrist was knowledgable and nice. A few dings for me on the retail part of the operation: I was surprised that pupillary distance was measured by putting a dot on the glasses with a lens pen--I feel that there are better ways than this in 2024 but I'm no ophthalmologist or optometrist. I did feel as though they were a little hot on the "selling" portion of the business. I wouldn't say I ever felt pressured, but I won't say that I didn't feel any pressure either. On the positive side, they had a huge selection of frames. Your standard Luxottica brands (Oakley, Ray-Ban, etc.), but also others. And a small selection of Maine-based frame companies! All in all, slight oddities on the retail side aside, I still feel that this is a 5-star establishment (maybe 4.5 stars, 'cuz who's perfect?!). I look forward to going again.

This place infuriates me…read more The last two/three times I've gone to them, had my contact exam, and ordered contacts, I've been very low on contacts and let them know this. I also haven't had a car. So, I pay an additional $9 on top of the crazy contact cost to have them shipped to me. Every single time they've told me to expect them to get to me in 4-5 business days. And every single time, it's two weeks later, I'm out of contacts, and I don't have them yet. The first time I called asking, they said whoops, they've been sitting here for a week and a half. They finally shipped them and I got them a couple days later. This time, it's been 15 days. I called at day 13 asking what was up. They put me on hold, then straight up lied to me and said they were out for delivery and would be there in a few hours. Two days later and they're nowhere to be found. No updates. I'm paying $9 for shipping and the contacts sit there for weeks until you literally call them and ask what's up. Now I'm out of contacts, and very frustrated. I know this is basic, but what the f***? These are my eyes! And these contacts cost an arm and a leg!!!! Do better plz. Sorry

I cannot speak for the ophthalmologist or optometrist. I never had the opportunity to meet them…read more The registration women were extremely kind and professional. However, the TECH or medical assistant (blonde lady) that attempted to obtain my intake/triage information, had the most sour attitude and nasty disposition that I have encountered in a long time. I have never in my life, walked out of a doctors appointment. After she started reprimanding me and about her third snarky comment, I had to stand up, tell her this would not be a good fit and walked out. I noticed the general patient population of the this office were quite elderly. I would be horrified if anybody spoke to my grandparents this way. I would literally prefer to go blind, then interact with that woman ever again in my life.

Overall (and according to friends) this seems to be a great practice with caring staff…read more Unfortunately, when I urgently needed an appointment, I was assigned to Dr. Mark Marotto and felt patronized to the point of disrespect. Additionally, he almost overcharged me for services that I'd specifically not wanted. The practice has friendly, professional staff at the desk, and the assistant who settled me in was wonderful. When Dr. Marotto entered, though, he began to put drops in my eyes without asking or explaining what he was doing. When I explained that I was concerned about my severe allergy to a certain chemical in a particular kind of drops, he scoffed at me. Once Dr. Marotto looked at my swollen eyelid and told me how to care for it, he then proceeded to conduct an entire eye exam (quoted billing charge: $250) on me __without my consent__. (I thought he was thoroughly checking my eyelid; the exam was not nearly as comprehensive or as careful as I've received elsewhere.) Fortunately, I'd already told the front desk that I was not there for an exam, and wouldn't pay for one -- but when I told Dr. Marotto that, he suggested that it was my fault because "you asked questions." (I did: about three.) I'm still a bit bewildered by why I was treated this way. I don't expect every physician to click with every patient, but I do believe that, regardless of their field, our health care providers should: 1. tell/ask us before they apply chemicals to our eyes (or anywhere) 2. honor patients' requests to avoid costly and unnecessary procedures 3. encourage questions, rather than blaming patients for wanting to understand what's wrong with them.
