Doctor Cousins is wonderful. She's so sweet, easy to talk to and even indulges in your curiosity about the photos / exam. The appointment was quick and easy! Highly recommend. Really like my optometrist but the front desk receptionists generally are so disengaged. My appointment time changed based upon their schedule - I thought I was late so I rushed over and found a text confirming my new time on the same day of the appointment; I never scheduled a "new time". I finally got a replacement pair of glasses here after two tries. Whoever made the lenses got it wrong twice. At this location though I found a very knowledge employee who helped make everything right with my glasses. She explained that one of the problems was that the frame ws not right for my Rx. The frame had been recommended to me at the Gorham location! Anyway, we switched the frame and the new glasses worked thanks to her assistance. read more

Excellent experience! This was my first time here, I was greeted promptly upon entry by a very friendly person behind the desk. I was there for a full eye exam (eye health as well as a new lens prescription). The tech I had wasn't unfriendly, but efficient and nice, but no small talk--totally fine, I was happy to rest my voice (some people say I talk too much anyway). After a few different rooms, machines, flashing lights and reading wall charts I waited to see my doctor. Dr. Young was my doctor this past visit and I couldn't have been more pleased with her clear, caring, and thoughtful approach. Thorough, but not at the cost of being careful. I was provided my perscription and (like any good museum), walked out through the "gift shop". I enjoyed the browsing and found a few frames that were to my liking. I didn't purchase anything on this visit--I'm shopping around since I have two good frames at the moment that just need lenses. But the sales person/optometrist was knowledgable and nice. A few dings for me on the retail part of the operation: I was surprised that pupillary distance was measured by putting a dot on the glasses with a lens pen--I feel that there are better ways than this in 2024 but I'm no ophthalmologist or optometrist. I did feel as though they were a little hot on the "selling" portion of the business. I wouldn't say I ever felt pressured, but I won't say that I didn't feel any pressure either. On the positive side, they had a huge selection of frames. Your standard Luxottica brands (Oakley, Ray-Ban, etc.), but also others. And a small selection of Maine-based frame companies! All in all, slight oddities on the retail side aside, I still feel that this is a 5-star establishment (maybe 4.5 stars, 'cuz who's perfect?!). I look forward to going again. read more

The check in was easy and swift, the preliminary exam was professionally and thoroughly done and the doctor's exam was impressive. I cannot recommend Dr. Pelletier too highly! I'm giving them a 1 star because it won't let me give none. I have been to the Freeport office twice now. Last year I wanted to try contacts. I went in not knowing it was only a 30 minute appointment. Never having put anything in my eye before, it took the whole 30 minutes and still didn't get the hang of it quite yet. The sweet girl helping me was doing a great job. Someone else from behind the desk came back and told me my time was up. I had to leave and come back another time if needed and pay the fee again. They charged me $240 and I left still not knowing how to use them fully. Fast forward a year, and against my better judgment, I returned for an annual exam. They have you fly through a bunch of paperwork when you get there explaining only one aspect of each form. They say, " initial here, here and sign here." That's it. When I got done my exam, the exam that should've been covered by my insurance ended up costing me $75 because they failed to tell me that certain things were not covered. Of course this was on purpose. When I checked out, the woman at the desk was absolutely rude with a bitch face. In my appointment, Dr. Young told me that she would order my contacts with a slightly different prescription than what she had given me as trials. When I got out to the desk, the woman said, " nope that's the prescription I was given. That's all you're getting. " And then just sat there and stared at me Instead of trying to resolve the issue. It's really too bad. Dr. Young is wonderful, and the first girl who helped me with my contacts was wonderful. Everyone else we've encountered there has been terrible. I don't know how they have any patients. Those two people are the only reason they get one star. I will never return to this office. read more

The medical portion of my experience was fine. I had some issues with the billing process, but they were eventually resolved. Some advice I would give is to make it clear if you are scheduling a routine annual exam and not scheduling for a specific medical issue, and if you are asked to return for a continuing examination ask if there will be any cost not covered by your insurance. read more

I have been a patient for 25 years. Not the same friendly, helpful practice it used to be. Each recent appointment, even in morning, I have had to wait well beyond scheduled time, 30 to 45 minutes, and then told I would need a second appointment to come back for eye dilation. Most recent appointment was for dilation requested by Dr. after previous appointment. On morning of dilation appointment, I knew I would be late so called to let them know. After I-295 construction and having to find new office entrance, I was 13 minutes late. The policy is that if 10 minutes late you need to reschedule. read more

Hopelessly indifferent -- except for the reception staff. I've had several encounters here, at two different branches, with two different doctors. At the Brunswick location, I had a trainwreck of an appointment with Dr. Sheridan Gove, who treated me more disrespectfully than any doctor I've ever encountered. But anyone can have an off day, right? So I asked the practice manager to assign me to a new doctor, and Dr. Michelle Broderick gave me my next exam. It was fine. In March, however, I returned for my annual exam with questions and concerns. Dr. Broderick knew that I'm a middle-aged woman who recently went through cancer treatment. She hurried through a perfunctory contact lens exam, and then told me she didn't have time to conduct a thorough eye exam. What about tests for glaucoma, which runs in my family? I asked. She said those tests are only important for (...wait for it:) people in middle-age, with a history of cancer -- and told me to reschedule for another exam later. I'm out of goodwill. I'm out of patience. I'm done with Maine Optometry. They just don't seem to care about their patients, and their patients' health. read more

Avoid at all costs. I'm not one for annoying bloggers talking smack about businesses unless there's a real reason to. Unfortunately this is one of those times. Let me be clear, I've gone to the Gorham and Standish offices multiple times and have had stellar results. Even my first time in Freeport wasn't an unpleasant experience, it was actually fairly great. While I was there for my check up, I was asked if I had any real concerns with my vision. I did mention that I had floaters that were now prevalent because I work in front of a computer with a white screen 90% of the day. I mentioned I may have had them before, but I've always had physical labor jobs and I never really noticed them until now. I was then asked if I would like to have a dilation done to make sure if everything was healthy as floaters are common, but can also be a sign of more severe health issues. I was then told that it was included with my yearly check up covered by insurance with my $20.00 copay. Was told I didn't have to, but it was recommended just to be sure. I said why not? I've had dilations done before and they have always been included in my insurance, it's just another trip to have it done, might as well. So I finished my appointment and booked the follow up dilation for a few weeks later. Fast forward a week or so later. I went to pick up my contacts swinging through town as I got a notification that they had been delivered. I ended up spending over 10 minutes waiting as they searched for my contacts. Eventually after about 15 minutes they found them and then proceeded to almost charge me the full amount even though my insurance covered it. I wrote it off as a simple mishandling and mistake, no biggie, I'm easy going. Then I go back for my dilation a week or two later. I get there 5-10 minutes before my scheduled appointment and end up waiting 40 minutes after my scheduled appointment to be seen. Again, fairly laid back person, I'm fine with it. Just a good thing I didn't have any other plans that day. I end up having my dilation and confirming, yes, I have floaters (as if I couldn't see those) BUT my eyes were healthy and there was no issues there (thank god!). I leave and head on my way after spending close to an hour and a half in the office and go about my business. About a month goes by and I receive a letter in the mail from Maine Optometry. I open it up thinking it's probably some kind of receipt confirming my visit or something of that nature. NOPE. It's a bill of $280.00 for my dilation that I was told was included in my eye exam. I give a call to get some more info about this as I'm thinking it must be a mistake. I find out that it was billed as a "medical" issue and therefore it wouldn't be covered by my vision insurance. I ask why it was billed as a separate item vs being included in my exam billing. I was told that I had mentioned "floaters" and it was a health issue. I then asked if it was because if I had to come back for a second visit instead of doing it all in one day and I was told that dilations almost never happen the same day as the exam unless you have or are prone to diabetes. I continually asked why I was being billed for something that I was told was included in my exam and I was told there was "more done than just the dilation" and essentially was told "You could have been billed more, but because of a mistake or the doctor's choice of being nice and not including it, you're paying this lesser amount for something you were told was included." Needless to say, this is a very, very bad way of doing business. Seems like their business practice is telling you that you can have services done and they're covered by your insurance and then they'll find a way to change the way they bill it to your insurance so they can take your hard earned money. Do not come here unless you like being screwed out of your money. Please go somewhere that cares about its patients and don't try to gouge you. I'm going to be switching my eye care provider to someone as soon as possible. read more

My first experience with them was pretty good. I didn't find them to be overly pushy when it comes to buying frames from them (like some eye doctor places) and my low grade prescription was initially wrong, but they corrected the prescription without issue. My second time was less than stellar. The initial prescription was wrong; severely distorting my vision. I went back to see the Doc and she essentially said that she did not believe me. Begrudgingly, she sent the glasses back. This continued occurred 3 times...each time the prescription being wrong. It wasn't until I called the 3rd time that I was informed that they will only redo the prescription 3 times. The Doc said to come back in a year to retest my eyes. In the meantime, I still need glasses and I can't wear the one's they've prescribed. So, in the end, we didn't see eye to eye. Edit/Update: Maine Optometry reached out to me to work with me further on finding a prescription that works. I appreciate their desire to make good on the prescription. read more

Absolutely terrible. My son broke his glasses about three weeks ago. We called right away to have replacements ordered. We left several messages, nobody ever returned our calls. We finally reached somebody at the office, who asked, "Why are you calling ME?" Because we need glasses, your office sells glasses, and you are the person the reception connected us with. She said she'd call us back. She didn't. Finally we asked that they mail us the prescription so that we could order glasses elsewhere. They mailed us a blank prescription form. I've never met a more incompetent group of "professionals" in my life. I can't speak about all the branches, but the one in Lewiston sucks. read more

My experience was fantastic - I had an exceptional experience with Dr. Broderick and the outstanding staff. Everyone is friendly and outgoing. It was a bit awkward at first with having to wait for my exam outside due to COVID but I felt safe with the protocols. They take your temperature before you enter the office. Once I was checked in, Paige did the preliminary testing and Dr. Broderick examined my eyes and found I have cataracts. She also detected an issue with my right eye that was a result of Shingles from several years ago. She and her staff contacted her connections at Eye Medical Group in Portland and provided details of my condition. I was seen immediately and they were able to remedy the issues with my right eye and I am being treated for cataracts in the very near future! I'm thrilled! I will continue with Maine Optometry and Dr. Broderick for my eye care and will bring family and friends. Love this Freeport office! :-) read more

I just visited this office today for my very first eye exam! It was a good time. Everyone was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, even when I asked dumb questions. Dr. Littlefield has soooo much energy and is a very funny and personable guy, he made me feel really relaxed and happy about having booked my exam there. Then, when I went to pick out glasses, the technician was so lovely, telling me which looked best and helping me pick some different pairs out for comparison. I could not ask for a better eye exam experience. Top notch. Just make sure your insurance covers vision beforehand. Anthem Maine Health helped me out big time. :) read more

I am fed up with this practice. From difficult scheduling to extremely long waits on the day of my appointments, I already was fed up but still went back because it seemed tolerable. But since then, I cannot get a call back from my doctor or office staff and yet they called and demanded that I pay my co pay even before my bill for the month was mailed out (about 2 weeks after my appointment) or they wouldn't order my contacts - this after calling 4(!) times to get the contacts ordered. The billing office was rude and hostile and didn't even give me a chance to review my bill before requiring payment despite a spotless payment history. I have never encountered this is in any medical, dental or optometry office quite quite frankly anywhere in the country which makes their priorities quite clear: money over patient care. I shouldn't have to pay my bill before getting my prescription and certainly should get a chance to make sure it is accurate and billed according to my insurance plan. Very disappointing after many, many years as a patient. read more

We have had good experiences with the physicians.... so they get a star for that... but the administration of this place is a complete disaster. We received a bill in early November for services 11 months prior. When I called (twice.... because they never returned my call the first time) to inquire what the bill was for they couldn't provide any answers and told me that no one there would be able to. I asked that someone call me to discuss and they never did. The lady in billing was not helpful or understanding that receiving a bill 11 months after a service date was not pleasing to the customer.... especially when the bill contains no details on what it was for. We also had problems with our glasses order in April when my pair took a month to receive because apparently my order never went through and it took 2 weeks to realize that. After these situations we have decided to find an office that is more competent. read more

I had been to this location (Yarmouth) years ago, but was told the previous Dr (Littlefield, I think) had retired and sold the practice. I Made an appointment to see one of their Dr.'s anyways. They called the day before to confirm, then called and left a voicemail 3 hours later canceling and rescheduling me with another Dr on another day. (Apparently they have several doctors and several locations) Called them back to try and get an appointment with the Dr I wanted to see (this did not go over well for some reason)and was told that I would have to go to another location 30 miles from where I made the original appointment. Told them no thank you, I would find another Optometrist closer to my home. She curtly said "Fine" and abruptly hung up on me before I could even finish that sentence! I called another Optometrist here in Yarmouth (one Dr, one location), it was $100 LESS and they got me an appointment 3 days from the time I called. I am convinced I dodged a bullet here, as I don't believe Dr's should be interchangeable, nor do I have the patience to have people be so rude to me. By the looks of a couple of other reviews ( both here and another place) this type of treatment is not unusual. :( Will leave a review on the other Optometrist after I see her. read more

Anyone with any internet savvy or common sense will quickly realize this place is run by dinosaurs and should be avoided. I was very dissapointed to find that although they accept my eye insurance, they would not sell me glasses or contacts because my prescription was from a different doctors office as a result of a recent move. Instead or using common sense and logic they insisted I get another exam even though my latest exam was 19 days ago. Furthermore, they rely exclusively on fax machines, verbal recalling of social security numbers in their crowded reception and all around lousy office staff. read more

Dr. Broderick is very competent and knowledgeable, but the office staff is terrible. They have messed up orders for contact lenses, forgetting to order them, ordering the wrong ones, ordering incorrect eyeglass prescriptions, etc. They are rude and ignore patients who are waiting long periods, and keep poor records. After a number of years of dealing with this, and never an apology, we decided to take our business elsewhere. read more

After moving, I was in the market for a new eye doctor. They were one of the only ones that accepted my vision plan and had hours that worked with my work schedule. So I went in for my annual eye exam and to get new contacts ordered. My first experience there everyone seemed so nice and knowledgeable. They got me in and out I a timely manner and had ordered my contacts for me. Then it went downhill. They opted not to tell me that my contacts were on back order and it took almost a month and a half to get them in. After about 4 months of wearing them, my vision seemed to be getting worse. I thought it was weird since i have had the same prescription for 7 years now, double checked the boxes, made sure they matched and continued on. It got so bad I started getting headaches so I switched to wearing my glasses(that were purchased from my previous eye doctor). After a hard fall, I had scratched my lenses and decided enough was enough I needed to go back in and see them. My second experience, I had wanted to get a new prescription for my contacts and replace the lense. they informed me they would not be able to replace my lense because I had purchased my glasses from a previous eye care office. Then when I was telling the optometrist that I needed a new prescription for my contacts she kept insisting that I was wrong and that my prescription I had now was fine. I had to fight with her to get her to actually let me prove to her that that prescription I could not see with. I didn't care what their "technology" had read. After using the is one better or two better method she had realized I did indeed need a new prescription. So onto ordering them, I ordered them and they told me the price. I go is that including my vision plan? And the receptionist goes oh no we just have it that you were going to use them for glasses. And I told her again kindly that I was using my plan for my contacts and then she began to tell me how much cheaper it was for me to use my plan for glasses and not contacts. In my head I knew that to not be true since my contacts yearly cost me 250. So I had to fight with her to use my plan. Then came the billing... They added an extra 30 dollars to my bill for a "contact appointment" when I asked her about the charge she said it costs them more to have a contact appointment... Really because no matter what my vision was still going to be what it was. I have never been billed extra for a "contact appointment" before. It's always been included in my annual exam. So in my opinion they are a bunch of monkeys that are money hungry. Hoping I can find another place within a reasonable distance in my network... read more

The doctor is not very kind and appears rushed. I received a new patient fee after my first visit. I have been to several eye doctors and different insurances from moving and never had to pay anything other than copay. Weird- but I paid it. Then they asked me to come back for a "recheck " before they would order my contacts. (I'm a busy mom with 2 young kids and on a budget) I was told by the doctor herself twice it was for sure a free recheck, also confirmed this with the scheduler over the phone and the front desk. Was told it was FREE to make sure they were getting me the right prescription. Later received a bill from insurance and I owe money! When I spoke over the phone on two occasions about this. The office states she diagnosed me with swollen cornea or something, but she never once mentioned anything was wrong !! So either way she is a dishonest doctor in my book. She either failed to inform me and will not give me information on this diagnosis OR she made something up to get a payment from a free recheck because she couldn't figure my prescription in her first visit. My paper bill also has no justification for the charges. It only states, "unpaid balance." I'm upset and I'm an easygoing person. I'm out some hard earned money and I'm still wearing my 2 year old contacts. Please take your business elsewhere!! read more

I will not return to Maine Optometry in Freeport. I do not like that the doctor does not give the eye exam. While having the exam, I kept telling the technician that I was seeing spots. He had no reaction. When Dr. Michelle Broderick came in, I reported my concerns and didn't feel she took them seriously. At my previous eye doctor (Casco Bay Eyecare which I would still be at if my insurance hadn't changed...) they had been following a spot on my eye for years. Dr. Broderick was quick to dismiss it. in 2012 i went here to buy contacts the receptionist looked at my perscription and told me it had expired, it had not and i had to show her the dates. i recently went there to get a perscription in my glasses and they informed me that i had not been there since 2011 (i never went in 2011). they lost my records so i had to bring a copy in and have them update it. both times the receptionists were not only wrong but very rude. they do not care if the customer is taken care of. KEEP YOUR RECORDS BECAUSE THEY WILL LOSE THEM AND TELL YOU IT'S YOUR FAULT. read more
