Yuki the manicurist uses Soft Leaf gel which causes nails that have any real length to break. She did gel extensions for me and the nails started to break after the second week. The nails didn't have a chance to grow back because every time they were done the nails would break within one or two weeks. Yuki refused to use any hard gel on nails to protect them. Her prices are just as high as in NYC. She doesn't talk much and has no personality even though she speaks English which makes it more difficult to know if she understands what I have said to her. All I did was to ask her to trim my hair but even her trimming skill was so poor which completely ruined my original style. 6/7/14 I have come across Michi Beauty Salon once again! :) This time I had Yuki as my nail technician. If you sit at her station you would notice that there are 2 calgel uv lights, that would mean that you can actually simultaneously put you hands instead of one light! :) Also, her station includes cabinets filled with all the essential materials necessary for the purpose of calgel. :D Additionally when taking care of your nails please note that when the gel is immersed in water they(your natural nails) will become rather weak. :OO I presume Yuki is the manager, the way she files the customer's nails is immaculate, I must say! :) She is a perfectionist(a very good trait), I admire her hard work and dedication!!!! :) After all, she has 10 years of experience on calgel so it goes without saying that she is a true professional!! :) read more

Update: The Calgel nails lasted for 4 weeks with no peeling or cracked fingernails. I also need to mention that they were subjected to complete abuse during this time - hours in the pool, days at the beach, even painting(!) and they held up wonderfully. They were extremely easy to remove too,soaked in regular nail polish remover and the Calgel peeled right off. I was happy to discover strong, healthy nails underneath too. Going to Yuki for a cal gel manicure is like going to a top specialist. She pays attention to the details and takes her time focusing on each job. I never feel rushed the way normal salons feel. I'm already on my 2nd manicure and I'm loving it more and more each time I go! Since this is my first gel experience, she really helped guide me through possible designs. When I stopped by Michi during my reconnaissance to check out the neighborhood salons they were the nicest, friendliest, and the stylists looked impressive. Customer service is more important to me than going to a drama filled night club esque salon were everyone dresses like hoes trying to one up each other. Kay sat me in the chair to give me a consultation, and then gave me a thorough and relaxing shampoo experience. As part of the shampoo, she gave me a wonderful head massage! I explained to her that I love my long hair, and do not want it short at all. She listened to me and gave me the most precise and beautiful cut. ( Lots of layers and bouncy blow out). I have long thick hair and by the end of my blow out I looked and felt exactly like a Victorias Secret Model. She even gave me a neck and back massage after the blow out! I am so very pleased with my first experience at Michi and I am so happy that I came here. I'll def be back in 2-3 months for my follow up hair cut, and maybe get highlights. I've gone to Michi several times to get a Japanese straight perm. Each time my hair has been about the same length so you'd expect that the price would be the same ($250). That was the price the first time and the second time it was $200 because of a one-time $50 discount. The manager Izumi did my perm both times. I went again yesterday, but even though they told me on the phone it would be $250, they charged me $300 and told me that my hair was longer and they used more chemicals so it was more expensive! It is completely outrageous because my hair length is exactly the same as before. Izumi had the day off so a new beautician who came from Japan 2 months ago (Ken) did my perm. I obviously left very upset. On my way home, Ken called me. He said he spoke with the manager and then said the prior $250 price was with the discount and the regular price was always $300. I told him this was a lie and told him about the first 2 times I had a perm. He was caught in the lie and didn't know how to answer. He said he would speak to the manager again - I told him that if $50 wouldn't be refunded to never call me again - and he never called again. Lastly, giving a tip depends on what level of service you get, and I'm happy to tip well when I get good service. They have a sign up that says guests should pay at least a 20% tip which is insulting because they feel like they don't need to give good service at all to get a nice tip. They treated me very disrespectfully and I will never go back! read more

They last for about 3-4 weeks, but the girl doesn't do fill ins :( They also do not do acrylics of any kind. BIG mistake. I ended up with tiny frizzy curls. The jury is still out for me regarding how I feel about calgel. The design was exactly what I asked for, and everyone at the salon was courteous and friendly. I love how thin the gel is in comparison to other gels I've gotten. The problem is after just a week the gel on one of my nails is lifting from the tip. I was really hoping to get more wear out of this manicure for the price. That being said the rest of my nails are still intact and because the color close to my nail bed is clear you can hardly see the re-growth. I will be going back to try the calgel again as I still have high hopes for the process, particularly for use at my upcoming destination wedding. I will update this review once I've given it a second try. If subsequent manicures yield a longer lasting result I will certainly upgrade my review to 5 stars. read more

one of the best hair experiences i've ever had, hands down. i'm pretty particular about my hair, and Michi is the first place i've ever left the salon feeling like the person who worked on me really knew what they were doing and i could rely on them to give me the kind of cut i was looking for, consistently. just a little bit of background, i've got long asian hair so when i went to Michi for the first time in January 2013, it was because i had researched different Japanese/Korean hair salons and Michi came out on top (and added bonus, i could grab lunch at Mitsuwa afterwards, eee!!) i've also gotten digital perm service there just yesterday with Kay (who has done my hair twice before) and i left totally happy with the bouncy curls she gave me. i'm trying my best NOT to wash it today for fear of lessening the curls, but my hair still looks fabulous as it did when i left. i will definitely be going back to Michi for more cuts and digi perms in the future!! yay! read more

I thought I'd try the place out since my fiance and I were headed to Mitsuwa for some tasty ramen. I have found my new local hair salon. I have been searching for the best place for me as I hopped from one to another with Groupon deals, but just couldn't find one where I was truly happy. Michi hair salon is located in the Japanese plaza shared with mitsuwa and is on the second floor. You can't miss it, just take the stair case up from the river road entrance. The store has been here for quite some time, I dare to say over ten years, and it is a modest space but very well managed and a clean welcome environment. Not noisy or bumping with house music either. My stylist was Ken and he was so patient and kind and listened and did a fantastic job cutting my hair. For a hair cut with shampoo it is $60. I've been going to Michi Salon for about 4 years after I moved to NJ from NYC so I can speak about them from experience. They are flawlessly polite and they leave you alone (I'm one of those people who can fall asleep while getting a haircut and don't want to be talked to). They are very precise and my haircuts are always consistent. They also massage your scalp with Sea Breeze astringent, which may sound weird, but is oddly refreshing. Additionally, they give you a neck, shoulder & upper back massage with your haircut which makes it the best haircut experience you can imagine. When I arrived in this salon I was quickly seated for my appointment. I showed Shinobu (my stylist) a picture of what I wanted and said how I hated having my hair short. Shinobu quickly went to work washing my hair and also gave me a head massage. She took at least 30 minutes just washing my hair! Next she went over to drying my hair and dried each and every piece which took at least an hour. By the end of the "hair cutting experience" I got exactly what I came in for. She made my hair super silky soft, and gave me the bangs I have been wanting for along time, for only $40.00! I'm definitely coming back to this salon! read more
