First and foremost, the staff was very kind, but overall I didn't have a great experience. I scheduled a cut and perm appointment weeks in advance via email. On the morning of my appointment, I realized I never received a text confirmation, so I called to double check. Unfortunately, I was told that my appointment details had never been saved. They did offer an opening later at 2:00 PM, which I accepted, though coming from NYC it was inconvenient and required rearranging my afternoon plans. When I arrived, the stylist was very friendly, but there was another mix up, he believed I was only scheduled for a cut, not a perm. While he was able to fit just the perm in, I think the time constraints led to a much looser perm, used larger and less rods than what I had requested. I specifically asked for a tighter style, similar to what I usually get. Afterward, I honestly don't see much of a difference between my hair before and after the perm, which is disappointing. I do believe they gave me a discounted rate, but the repeated miscommunication made the experience frustrating and the end product wasn't really what I wanted. It felt like a waste of both time and money, and I'll now need to have it redone elsewhere. read more

Visited Akane today to get a men's haircut. Received an excellent cut from Yusa! He was very thorough and made sure to consult with me on what final hairstyle he would try to achieve. Hair wash came prior to the cutting part. We also had a pleasant conversation throughout the entire process. Pricing was very fair, and nice that they take card. If you're looking for a place for Asian men's haircuts, this is the spot. Being from Los Angeles, I tried different barbers around Manhattan and Fort Lee area after moving here and couldn't find anyone that could do it like the Los Angeles folks (at ssooniestyle, shout out to them and Ray) until I came here. Yusa was the one to cut my hair and I plan to go to him only for my hair needs moving forward. I actually came in with many things I wanted to fix in my hair. Not only did Yusa patiently listen to all of my requests, he even spent extra time to examine my hair type and head shape and explained his thought process as he cut my hair. By the end of the haircut, not only did I receive an excellent haircut for a very fair price, but Yusa also gave me a ton of advice regarding how I should maintain and style my hair. Cherry on top, he's also super friendly, interesting and a great conversationalist. In terms of service, scheduling an appointment by phone is simple and quick, but the stylists here are understandably busy and have packed schedules. I would suggest scheduling ahead of time and mentally preparing to be placed on a wait list. Otherwise, finding the salon was easy and the interior is clean and pleasant to be in. Kosuke saved my hair y'all. I can't express how thankful I am. Just look at the pictures of when I went to a different salon. I went back to get a refund at the original salon and he had the audacity to say "who looks at the inside of your hair anyway"... Anyway Kosuke saved me and my hair! He knew exactly what to do and even better, was so empathetic to my situation and feelings. The color of my hair when I first saw Kosuke was nothing like I wanted it to look like. ****IT'S WORTH THE WAIT**** If you're a new client, you'll have to wait at least two months for a color appointment because of how busy they are. Most stylists there are pre-booked by their clients with appointments spanning from 6 months to 1 year out.... Like myself. My recommendation is to get in the rotation, don't miss your appointment, schedule ahead of time and you will NEVER be disappointed. You can't expect to see stylists in high demand within a days notice, it just doesn't work like that! So don't let that to detour you from making your appointment. This is the BEST SALON in the North New Jersey Area, IMO! I've done various services with them over the years from bleaching, cutting and perms and have NEVER been disappointed. The staff is kind, the salon is clean and well kept and the stylists are exceptionally talented. They keep up with the latest trends and hair styles and have years of experience. Something important to me during my hair journey has been maintaining the integrity of my hair over various bleaching sessions. At Akane they are very careful --they don't use high peroxides and heat over a pro-longed period and fry your hair.... Like most places. Instead they create a hair plan and treat your hair with an individualized regiment so that you can go from black pigmented hair to platinum with little damage over a series of sessions. I've been to a handful of different salons and barbers in the area and always had issues with either the fade, top hair or both. I heard many great things about Akane and was hesitant at first for I was only paying about 25 per cut. I was introduced to Yusa who later sat me down and had asked what type of cut I wanted. After showing him several images of how I wanted my haircut he started to examine my head/hair for about 10 minutes. He thoroughly explained to me the nature of my hair and where my part begins and where it needs to be fixed. After 2 hair washes and a massage, I think we found a keeper. Thank you so much Yusa! Was a regular client at Akane when I was in college and when I moved back to NJ from Brooklyn a decade later, I gladly returned. They are just the best - from the quality of their products, the skills of their stylists, and the service you get when you go. Yuki has done such an incredible job with correcting my hair color and guiding my hair on this bleach journey to keep my hair as healthy as possible. The color is also remarkable and does not get brassy. And her cuts are 10/10. Kosuke is also fantastic but getting an appt with him can be near impossible. I came here based on a recommendation from a family friend who has been going to this salon for years. I'm sure they continue to have good experiences considering they only book with Eriko, but I went in with an appointment with a "master stylist" (right under director) who is not even listed on the team page on their website. I asked for lighter layers for my already short hair, but asked to keep the length as long as possible because I just wanted a touch up to give some body. What I ended up getting is an EXTREMELY layered short hairstyle from an asian salon from the 80s. He took off chunks of my hair. I do not see anyone with this hairstyle who is under 60 years old. This is the worst haircut I've gotten in YEARS. The hairstylist could see I was not happy with the result but did not directly ask how I felt about it. Checking out, the receptionist also did NOT ask what I thought about the result. It is going to take months for my hair to grow back out to the way I wanted it to be. Different strokes for different folks is the best way for me to describe what you will experience at Akane. For starters, this is a Japanese hair salon. "So big deal?" you may be saying, and that "all salons should cut all types of hair well!!!" you may be proclaiming... well you couldn't be anymore wrong. Just like different races possess different traits... hair is no different. Time after time, over the many years of changing from salon to salon (with some big & heavy NYC hitters mixed in there too), I have yet to have found one that cuts "Asian" hair well, or at least to my standards... that is up until now. Maybe this is because this is a Japanese owned salon, where they import their stylists from Japan... regardless of what it is, it works for me. Again, working for someone with "Asian" hair. For a man, $30 gets me a hair wash, a cut to my desire, a post-cut shampoo, a brief head and shoulder massage, and some styling too... so just on value for price alone, it's hard to beat. But the value does not stop there. If you are like me, you are very indecisive about what to do with your hair... you wan to look clean, but have some modern flair without looking too teenaged, and this is where Akane shines. They always manage to find me a look that fits my personality and lifestyle. I can't comment on womens' prices and styling menus, but I do know that my wife is a recurring customer and always gets what she wants. According to her, perms, color, and cut are very reasonably priced. And she also recommends the salon to her friends and family too. I also can't comment on non-Asian hair... so for non-Asians wanting to try the salon, I don't have much to offer, except for the fact that I do see plenty of non-Asians who get work done there. If you decide to go, different stylists have different strengths, so you would be best served to check out their website (akanesalon.com) to see who you want to make an appointment with. A recommendation of mine is to ask for Eriko, who is their head stylist, as she does a wonderful job with both my wife and myself, as well as with the friends and family we have sent her way. So if you are looking for a great salon with reasonable prices, where service and customer attention run high, then I highly recommend this place. I've been going to Akane Salon for the past 13 years and I only have positive things to say! They are extremely busy (it's a good thing) so if you're not flexible, then do call at least 1 week in advance for appointments, especially if you want to book a particular stylist. Their stylists are of course all Japanese, but they understand enough English to be able to carry a normal conversation. I notice that they sometimes have temporary trainees? from Japan taking appointments & working the shampoo station, so if anyone had difficulty communicating, that just may have been the case..? Every time I call (from unlisted #, so they don't know who's calling) they always answer in English, and every time my English speaking friends call, they never had any issues.. For a woman having a long, straight, layered hair, my visit never took over 1 hour including the pre-cut consultation, shampoo/treatment, cut and styling. I always ask for any styling tips at home and they're happy to share their secrets with me :) I've always left the salon 200% happy with my cut. They have many great hair treatment products that are usually only available in salons in Japan that you can purchase to take home. Pricing is very very good for a Japanese hair salon that offers top quality service. If you've been to any Japanese salons in NYC, you would know what I'm talking about.. If anyone thinks $40-60/woman's cut is expensive and 1 hr is too long, I suggest they stick to Supercuts... lol read more

Beauty and Value are two concepts that are rarely expressed together when it comes to premium asian-centric salons. This is especially the case in the Fort Lee/Pal Park area where the abundance of young, hip and trendy koreans have sustained a variety of expensive asian beauty parlors that prosper at least in part because we have all gotten used to the idea that beauty comes at a premium. After all, it is no coincidence that the lovely and glamorous also tend to be the rich and famous. Societal truths aside, in Akane, I have found a home for the rest of us: that unfortunate lot (myself included) who is very vain but unfortunately, also very broke. For $35, I left Akane thrilled. As this was my first time there, I was taken care of by Mina, one of the head stylists. I showed her a picture of the kind of hair style I was going for and immediately, she made observations about my hair and explained to me what she needed to do to achieve the desired results. Perceptively, she pointed out all the aspects of my current hair that she needed to fix, which turned out to be the same misgivings I had about my previous haircut. It's always a good sign when you and your stylist speak the same language, a connection that's difficult to establish most of the time. The haircut was executed perfectly and I was very satisfied with how Mina overcame my historically difficult hair. I like to think of my unruly, coarse and thick mane as a fair measure by which to gauge the skills of any stylist and Mina--for lack of a better phrase--killed it; she killed my damn hair. Haircut aside, the visit was made more pleasant by all the trappings they offer. For the hair washes, I sat in a chair that electronically folds out, was given a mesh to put over my face for sanitary purposes and at every juncture of the wash was asked whether I was comfortable with the heat/pressure. It's just a hair wash, but small things like this go a long way. After the second hair wash, I was also given a brief but enjoyable head, neck and back massage. Akane has absolutely no need to do this and I would have gladly forked over the $35 at that point already but this added touch made me feel very appreciated and important as a customer. Finally, what's worth noting is how all the workers there observe the traditional Japanese pleasantries. For instance, I was pleasantly surprised when Mina offered her business card with both arms outstretched and with a bow. Customer service, it seems, is alive and well here. All this is to say I felt Akane offered something of real value for the $35 I paid. I walked in for a simple men's haircut but walked out feeling I got much more. When was the last time I felt that way about any transaction in this ridiculously over-priced society? I don't remember and that's pretty much all the endorsement Akane needs. read more

This Japanese-owned hair salon is reliable, professional, and affordable, highly recommended for Asian people. Because all the hair stylists are Asian, they know how to cut Asian hair. We Asians tend to have straighter and courser hair, and unfortunately not many American hair stylists understand the general characteristics of Asian hair, which is why they tend to thin out the hair too much. I agree with Julia P., whoever said 4hr haircut is over-exaggerating, they'll do their job efficiently if we do our homework - just bring an inspirational haircut photo or some reference and explain to them what you want!!! The customer service is excellent, they really care about customer satisfaction! When my perm didn't come out the way I wanted, I went back and they gladly re-did my hair without charge! That's the Japanese way, It's really refreshing to be treated with care and attention, I love how they make sure customers have enough magazines to read, offer them a complimentary drink(coffee or tea) and massages. And for all this, $50 is not expensive for a haircut! UPDATE: I guess they only give massage & complimentary drinks for people who come for perm?? This has stuck with me ever since I was a kid watching "Boys Meet World" the main character with curly hair said "vicious cycle of a haircut, first day cut its the worst looking haircut ever but when it grows out it looks amazing for that 1 day but then you need another haircut" (not exact quote) That part was how I felt about getting a haircut from random places. I would try, try and try again but it always would stand true so I grew my hair out. Needless to say I had to cut it eventually since corporate American is not that accepting of long hair on men. Yay! I came here with my cousin, who had been here before, to get haircuts. There was a little dog in the salon who was so cute and sat next to me on the couch while I waited for my appointment. First, I met with my stylist, didn't learn his name, who asked me what I wanted done with my hair. I explained carefully and then was taken to the back to get my hair shampooed. The chair was a bit uncomfortable but the guy shampooing me did his best to help me find a more comfortable position. He shampooed my hair twice, the first time was just quick and the second time incorporated a scalp massage. Then my hair was conditioned, rinsed, and squeezed out and towel-dried. My stylist spent a decent amount of time cutting my hair - I see what everyone else means about the perfectionist thing - but I wasn't in a rush to be anywhere so that was fine with me. The one thing I didn't like was that he thinned out my hair significantly. In general, many Asians have thick hair but my hair is a bit wispier (probably because I do so much stuff to it all the time) and I wish he'd left me with some more substance. My cousin's stylist also thinned out her hair a lot so it seems like that's just something they all do so be aware of that. The wash and cut was $40, which was so cheap compared to the spa/salon that I normally visit. Overall, I'm satisfied with my hair and would come here again. read more

I went in when my husband and my 2 year old son got their haircut, and for children and for the price I would definitely go elsewhere, but for my husband they were very thorough and good. When my 2 year old son was getting his haircut, they sort of botched up the side by buzzing way too much on the side above his ear. One side is definitely shorter than the other and did not do much to easy or make him feel comfortable. My husband on the other hand, I brought in a picture and asked the stylist to cut appropriately to the picture, and because he had something to look at he was able to understand exactly what was necessary. The stylist Kyeshi (I think that's his name) was friendly and was able to fix and make my husband's haircut fit according to the shape of his face. My husband was very satisfied and made this his regular go-to spot for men's haircut. Make sure to make an appointment at least one week prior to your cut, or else you won't get in. read more

Eriko is the name of the hairdresser that took care of me. Very pleasant personality, and skillful to say the least. The head neck and shoulders massage at the end, which is part of the haircut, makes for a complete experience. Beware! Hairstylist toy with your hair. I told the hair stylist TARO i want to grow out my hair, and i even show a picture. He said okay okay, he just going to take little off the top. But then he proceed to cut all my hair on the side and back.... which look nothing like what i showed him in the picture. My hair was about 3 inches in length on both side and back, he gave me basically a buzzcut. he cut my hair so short that my scalp is visible, they look like bald patches. Took me months to grew my hair out only for him to mown it down. And the fade is not even, i have a little patch is shorter than the rest. Wtf?! Unreal! If Taro is not sure about the haircut, he should ask me. Afterall customers pay for haircuts. He cant just cut it however he feel like. I look so bad that im choking on my own vomit. Went for the first time to this salon yesterday early afternoon (even though it's been in business for three decades, didn't try it until now)-they were able to fit me in with a half hour notice, waited about 15 min when I got there. What a great haircut, took 45 minutes for wash, cut, dry-husband said it was very cute! Went to Aki, who apparently has 6 yrs exp. cutting hair in Japan, 14 yrs expect. cutting hair at Akane). He did exactly what I wanted (layered bob with short side swept bangs, volume at top/ back of head, tapering hair at bottom to get rid of weight), cut bulk while damp, blow dried then cut a bit more to make sure it looked right. Brought pictures, which always helps. Aki was very attentive, polite, and meticulous-asked before cutting lengths, showed me how he was going to cut the back/ top, kept checking to see if I wanted something modified. That said-I didn't have to say much except that I wanted slightly shorter bangs. Will go back-$60 very reasonable for a great cut. Other observations--Salon was busy without being hectic. All the hairstylist carry a holster of combs and what looks like at least 10 different scissors. read more

This is my *FIRST* review EVER on yelp. In fact, after Aki san did another great haircut for me today,I've finally decided to sign up for yelp and profess my appreciation. I had my first haircut with Aki last summer and this time he completely outperformed himself! I came to the States two decades ago. I haven't had any luck finding one single hair stylist whose skills and taste are on par with what I had back home in Asia--until a Japanese friend introduced Aki from Akane to me a year ago. I have very coarse and unruly hair and the volume is quite thick. That is to say, I don't and I can't have typical Asian long straight hair. I've tried different hairstylists recommended online and through friends. I've paid top dollars in NYC, but all of them were far from satisfactory. They always began by complaining about the "quality" and "quantity" of my hair (hello? Isn't it part of *your* job to deal with different kinds of hair?!). Then, they always ended up giving me a similar hairstyle with a lot of layers. What's most irritating is that ALL Of them replied mainly on thinning scissors to create layers, which only made my hair appear even more frizzy. Aki's approach was, to my surprise, very different. When I had him last summer for the firs time, his opening suggestion was that we needed to keep the "volume" of my hair. Seriously, NO hairstylist had told me that in my entire frigging life!! He still gave me a lot of layers, but since his purpose was to retain the volume and the natural shape, he rarely utilized the evil thinning scissors unless it's absolutely necessary. The result was completely different! I ended up not needing to do another haircut for more than 6 months. But then, I had to go to another local Asian stylist for I simply didn't have time to drive one hour to Fort Lee. Needless to say, that hairstylist completely ruined my hair. Today, I asked Aki to salvage my hair. I had a complete trust in him and asked him to go short. He's the one who's a bit consistent--I guess very few women here prefer short hair and he feared that I would end up crying. LOL.What a sweet man. Quite the contrary, I was brought to 7th heaven when the haircut was done! It's short, but it's crisp, edgy, cosmopolitan but still downright cute!! Finally I've regained that urban trendy look which normally would only happen when I did my haircut in Asia. This is the FIRST haircut I have in this country that grants me the precious feeling of being a "new" person! BTW, some yelpers complained about the feel of Akane not being very warm. I guess there is a persistent racial stereotype about how Japanese are excellent at customer services and therefore they expect that all staff members of Akane should be always well-mannered and deferential. As someone who frequented Japan in the past, I venture to say that that impression is only a stereotype. I actually like the fact that Akane is a no-frills salon. All the staff members are just polite to the right degree without being too servile. Anyway. I have great experience with Akane and therefore I highly recommend it. read more

First time at Akane and really pleased with the entire experience! I scheduled a consultation first --I had initially been interested in japanese straightening but after the consultation, Kyohei recommended the keratin treatment (not permanent, easier going on the hair). He also gave good suggestions on changes he wanted to make to my hair, which was great for me because I'm not very specific/don't have strong preferences about one style. The consultation was quick, maybe 5 minutes, and they scheduled me for the week after. First they washed my hair (they washed it three times that day: once before the cut, once after the cut, and another time after keratin application. Every time the staff was extremely considerate about temperature and generally very gentle with the wash--I've been to places where it's very aggressive & sometimes painful). Kyohei first trimmed/layered my hair before the keratin treatment, and you can tell he's really detailed and isn't in a rush to get things over with. The cut took maybe 30-40 minutes. Then they did the keratin application. Then wash/dry and Kyohei went in and did some additional trimming/layering. All in all, I was there for 4 hours--kind of long, but they did warn me about the length of the treatment and they kindly offered beverages and wifi. I paid $200 for the keratin and $50 for the cut. To be honest, I don't feel that I overpaid AT ALL because I was attended to for 4 hours straight continuously and was pretty comfortable the whole time. Also it was my first keratin treatment and was mildly nervous about it, but I have absolutely no regrets after coming here. If you go to any of the Japanese owned beauty salons in Manhattan, the same service will cost you double. This is the first time I cut my hair with Eriko and I absolutely love the outcome! My hair was too long, heavy, and the color of highlights from before was fading. I wanted to go for a fresh summer look and cut out the extra length I had. Eriko was a quick decision maker and knows exactly what I wanted. I was very satisfied with the result.
