By far, the best steak in the area. The fillet with blue cheese was delicious. The service is always top notch.

We sat up at the counter and had a great experience dining with other travelers and locals. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful even taking a photo of us behind the counter. I was on a road trip up from Florida to Wisconsin with a friend. We were going through Springfield, Illinois, so we could visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum & Library. So that's how I ended up in this neck of the woods. Needed a spot for dinner and this popped up as an option and sure glad it did. My friend & I both opted for the Fried Chicken dinner and this place makes the best fried chicken I've had in decades! OMGOSH! The meat was fully cooked, but still so incredibly juicy. The crispy skin and coating was unreal, it was so good - it was truly "finger-lick in' good". While I'm borrowing that old slogan, The Ariston Cafe's fried chicken is like the fried chicken ideal of perfection. They have a classic salad bar and that hit the spot, especially on a road trip where you're not often getting enough veggies. I'm writing this review some weeks later after getting back home. If the place had been average, I wouldn't bother, but when a reminder to do a review popped up, I had to do this as the waitresses and cooks deserve it, as do the owners & all the staff. Waitresses were all nice as could be and helpful. It's like walking back in time when you go inside, and it reminded me of great restaurants in the area I grew up in. If I make it back up that way again, I'll plan my travels to include another stop in at The Artisan.

Mariah was a super sweet server who was friendly knowledgeable and attentive to our table. We didn't feel rushed or pressured, it was a relaxing brunch to sit and talk and catch up! We ordered the biscuit & 3 butters- light, fluffy, buttery biscuits and the butters were delicious! After that we got the farm fresh omelets, Italian slinger, breakfast burrito and steak and eggs with grits. The steak was delicious, melts in your mouth, the eggs were perfectly cooked... the Italian slinger was phenomenal! I cleaned my plate- delicious salsiccia and over easy eggs cooked exactly right! This wasn't our first time stopping in after church and it sure won't be our last!

Going off the pictures and reviews beforehand, I was expecting it to be more upscale/fine dining. It was a lot more casual than that. Kind of like if Outback had less tables and more of a neighborhood bar feel lol. Not a bad thing, just different from what I pictured when I made the reservation. We came mainly for the steak because obviously the place is called Carnivore. We got the Bone In Ribeye, Chicken Alfredo and Carnivore Potatoes, plus a Strawberry Basil Martini and a Menabrea. Funny enough, the Chicken Alfredo ended up being the best thing we ordered. We basically got it to have some pasta with the steak and ended up not being able to stop eating it. Huge portion, a lot of chicken, and the Alfredo was really good. Was not expecting to leave a place called Carnivore talking more about the pasta than the steak. The ribeye was good, but for the price I expected more. Once you're spending $60 to $70 on a steak, I expect a noticeable difference from somewhere like Outback, and I didn't really feel like there was. It wasn't bad at all, it just wouldn't be the reason I came back. The Carnivore Potatoes were our least favorite. Verrrrry soft and absolutely drowning in butter. Between the two of us we ate maybe one potato and left the rest. The martini was really good and the Menabrea was a solid beer with dinner. Service was probably the biggest downside. For such a small restaurant we really didn't see our server much, maybe 3 times the whole meal. Once for drinks, once to take our order, and once a while after the food came, which is when I finally got to order my beer. After that she was putting chairs up and sweeping the rest of the restaurant before coming back, so when she did we just asked for to go boxes, dessert and the check all at once. We took the Chocolate Chip Cheesecake to go and that was actually pretty good too. Also didn't realize until we got there that Carnivore is on The Hill. It's tucked into the neighborhood and I really liked the location. Went at 7:45 on a Wednesday and parking was easy. Good anniversary dinner and I'm glad we tried it. I'd come back, but honestly I'd probably be coming back for the Chicken Alfredo before the steak.

Every time we visit this town we try to get in a meal or at least take home one of their handmade pies or cookies. Haven't not been inside this restaurant ever, i kept an open mind I didn't know what to expect. Theres apparently three dine in area options. You have a whiskey, bar lounge that probably the likes of General MacArthur would patronize for food and cigars like at the Historical Manila Hotel in Manila Philippines. Then you have the open dining room where you seat yourself and it was reminiscent to an Army Chow Hall...sort of with retro 80s decor. And lastly, I chose the Salad Bar room with a booth seating. Server Jessica was fantastic! Went through the standard protocols with me; I was really enjoying the vibes at this place. It's very Mahogany, 1960s - 1980s feeling, almost like that steakhouse Warren Buffet likes to go to in Omaha Nebraska. Very community family oriented, quiet, really quite different than any restaurant or diner you patronize in a city like Los Angeles. A lot of retired folk here and truly, you feel like you been thrown back in time to the 80s and early 90s in some sense. So anyways on to the food. I'm going to state my opinion straight up, the salad bar hot food bar is the star of the show. In fact everything from the soup to the oven potatoes to the COLESLAW (Best Coleslaw Ever), reminded me of that once upon a time Soup Plantation that died during Covid....and the best part is the Cold and hot bar is all-inclusive with your main entree order. Yes you heard that right, you buy the resort tickets, and you enjoy your stay with unlimited cocktails at Cancun...I mean Neimergs... Now to the Iowa Premium Rib Eye Steak. To the kitchen staff: 2 minutes on the top side, 2 minutes on the bottom side. Bake in oven 1 minute on both sides. Done. Medium Rare. A perfectly good steak was destroyed because it came out well done. To future passerbys, skip the baked potato loaded if you decide to dine in at the hot and cold bar room. Last thoughts. I want to give the steak a 3 stars but the overall ambiance, the grandpappy grandma vibes and that overall feel like your dining at someone's home in farm country really elevated the entire experience. Plus the servers are all working their tails off. So I've rated this place a 4 stars. Think anyone on a road trip, or just driving their rig through town should give this historical site a visit. 1978 right? Or something like that. This place also has some of the freshest greens.
