We have had always great food and service. However Friday it was certainly not the case. Service was a 3 until another waitstaff came. I ordered the Bass it supposed to have a cream sauce on it. The sauce was dry and stuck on the side of the bowl..the mashed potatoes were dry. Salad was good. My husband had the muscle soup,that was good. My friend had duck also good. The best was the dessert cream brulee. The place was unorganized. The manager was there, yet. He was frazzled about literally everything. We got there at six pm. We stopped for lunch, initially attracted to the lakeside dining, and outside covered patio seating. I had the shrimp cocktail appetizer for my lunch entree. Beautifully presented large perfectly cooked shrimp Was just right for me and met my no dairy, no eggs food restrictions. My husband had the Triggerfish BLT. The BLT was on a buttered hoagie roll with gently fried crust, fried tomatoes, lettuce, and bacon. So big, he had to cut it with a knife. Wish we lived closer, so we could make it an our regular place. Sitting lakeside on a beautiful day was a treat! Great service too! read more

Up until now, I have never left an unpleasant restaurant review. Today, that has changed. Let me start by saying the staff were lovely (waitress and host). This Easter Brunch; however, was sadly a big disappointment . I spent (for a party of 1) $51.22 and this is what it was. The Lemon Herb Roasted Mahi Mahi was cold and totally overcooked (perhaps because it had sat there so long and over seasoned with the herb crust. Oversight of quality control. Ashame for the fish. The Prim Rib was done nicely; however, I was given mostly fat and it too, was cold. Most of the entrées (appearance wise) left much to be desired. All looked like they had been in the chafing dishes far too long. Some of the shrimp from the big bowl of shrimp cocktail weren't cooked throughly. The best thing there were the carrots (beautifully done) and the green beans (seasoned nicely). I have been in the food industry for over 25 years. Fed large groups daily (150 plus twice a day) so I am not coming from lack of knowledge. This was an incredible disappointment and for that price, expectations were far higher. We love the ambiance of the "NEW" Beach House. The upgrades to the restaurant are beautiful. However, we have eaten there now a couple of times and left feeling let down from what it used to be. I'd eaten here twice previously over the last 6-8 months traveling through the area; I was slightly taken aback entering the establishment this time and seeing the changes. Noticeably more upscale in ambience, the wait staff was now suited up for a black-tie affair. I was a bit concerned about my attire, having discarded my business clothes for the day and opting for a comfy pair of jeans and long-sleeve tee shirt. The staff paid no attention and treated me just the same as if I'd walked in with coat and tie. I couldn't resist the allure of a white chocolate martini after reading its description, despite the fact I'm working hard to lose a bit of weight currently. Even amid the guilt, it was worth it: basically, it tasted like a Mudslide from Applebees. That's not a derogatory description, as I could probably founder on the stupid things if it didn't affect my waistline. But the best was still to come. I've eaten some of the finest filets this country has to offer, from Flame in Springfield MO, to the obligatory trips to Ruth's Chris and Landry's in Florida, to various Capitol Grilles. It wouldn't be a stretch to say this steak topped them all. The smoked Gouda Mac n cheese is a must as well. It was so good I went back a second night in a row since I was in town two nights, this time opting to switch it up with the sea bass. While good, it didn't hold a candle to their filet. If you're looking for one of the best, savory, most tender cuts of meat you can imagine encompassed in a nice dining experience, hit up the Beach House. read more

Had dinner Saturday night, first time back under the new management. Dining room was warm and spotless. Service was friendly, attentive and considerate. Cocktails were perfect and beautifully presented. Had a small steak and sides and the meal was delicious, well plated and cooked exactly to my preference. We were seated quickly and the server was there to take our drink orders. After enjoying our drinks she came back for our food orders. Food was delivered in a timely manner except for my wife's. The server said she didn't know how it happened but her dinner was not put into the system. We were all finished with our meals before she got hers. Of course the server never inputted her order, the restaurant never offered any discounts or anything for the inconvenience of there mistakes. Food was very good but customer service was lacking. We had only one night in Decatur and it was raining off and on and thundering, which made the location really ideal. We ordered a special and a Seafood Mac, which is actually served over linguini. Overall it's a 2.5 it started off strong the appetiser's were great and came out fast but that's where the good of this place ended the entrees me and my date had (the panko crusted halibut and the scallops) both were juicy but the halibut was rather bland and the sauce was too sweet and completely overwhelmed the halibut and for the 39 dollar price tag I expected more the scallops seemed to be just thrown into the oven on broil no sear except on top the sauce was once again rather sweet but a little much for most people the sides came out late and were rather bland the brussel sprouts were cold and felt like the ones out of the bag the mushrooms were fine but under seasoned and to finish it off the 24 carrot cake it tastes like the box mix you get from the store presentation was good but was rather generic service was great but will probably not come back the foods okay but for the premium price you pay it falls flat on its face I expected better and am thoroughly disappointed read more

I went there on Veteran's Day 2025 and discovered Veterans get lunch free. Now I'm grateful for coming here. I recently purchased a home here and as a retired executive chef of luxury hotels across the country, I was finding it hard to discover any gems here. On my entrance, I didn't have to wait long even though it was busy. Maybe 2-3 minutes and then I was seated. I did have to wait longer than expected to be greeted by my waiter but I noticed that he was also tending the bar so I had to cut him some slack. He was very pleasant and introduced himself and asked me what I wanted to drink. I told him and he bought it to me quickly even though he was multi tasking. His name stared with a J. Oh yes, I forgot, although I didn't get a window seat, I still had a pleasant view of the lake which was pleasant. It was a windy and cool day. When he came to take my order, I mentioned that I was a veteran and he told me what my choices were without hesitation. I knew he was a professional because he spoke to me at eye level. He let me know I could order an entree with 1 side dish. I ordered the crab cakes with a side house salad. I also ordered a sweet tea with lemon beforehand. I do wish they served lemon wedges instead of slices however, when I asked for more lemon he didn't hesitate to bring me enough to enjoy the meal. As for the food, the salad was ice cold as it should be and it was just the right amount of everything. The salad dressing was a little thinner than I prefer but overall, the salad was pleasant. The Crab cakes were delivered about the time I had finished my salad. Impeccable timing sir. As for the crab cakes, they were topped with dried parsley and a sauce which wasn't noticeable nor enough as far as my palate likes. They were slightly crispy on the outside, which they should be but they weren't the best I ever had nor prepared myself at restaurants. They still were good though so whoever prepared them, don't take it personally. By this time, the place was packed. Overall, I still enjoyed everything about the Beach House, especially the service for a stranger coming for a free meal on Veterans Day 2025. And yes, I did leave a tip. The entire meal cost me about $4.50 for the tea. They do get an 8 out of 10 from me and I will return again. I promise you that! Maybe only during the lest touristy season though. read more

We go to the beach house in Decatur, Illinois, occasionally, usually for special events, such as anniversaries. We are on a low-carb diet and it's kind of hard to stick with that at the beach house, but the food is extremely good, and the service is also very good. We enjoy looking out at the lake. The prime cut new York steak was not edible. It was full of gristle. Our appetizer was not served until well after the meal was brought to the table. On the positive side, the meatballs were very good. The waiter was very nice but was attending to more tables than he could manage.
