I was having trouble with my desktop and went to Micro Center. Described my problem which was that email was painstakingly slow! I was encouraged to purchase a rebuild package for 799.00. Picked it up, same problem ... super slow email!!! The sales associate paid no attention to my problem which turned out to be too many emails, like 6,000 plus. I am no expert, that is why I went to Micro Center. They are certainly not experts either as they transferred everything from my old computer to the new one. Never advised me (despite needing all my passwords to transfer everything) that my old problem would still remain. Afterwards, they requested my feedback and that was ignored, of course! read more

This is about ordering for delivery from Microcenter. The store is awesome as are the staff. Ordering for delivery, leaves something to be desired. The site says that products will take 1-3 days to ship, which is fine. It's clearly stated. Unfortunately, it isn't easy to find out the actual order status. The system I ordered was listed as shipped, which might mean it's actually been shipped, but it can also mean processing. In almost every case, when I order things online from other companies, when something is reported as shipped, I'll get an email with tracking information. Sometimes the tracking info will only say that the shipping label has been created, but it's still status. The only conclusion I can draw is that it probably isn't a good idea to order a system for delivery from them. To be clear, though. I recommend the store without reservation. read more

I have been here many times because it is convenient but it has the worst customer service of maybe anywhere in the Boston area. It is shocking how bad it is. This last time I almost had to tackle someone to notice me- let alone be able to answer my questions. If you don't know exactly what you need they will probably lead you in the wrong direction. I doubt many of the people who work there are proficient with computers. It's no geek squad and the basic social skills are pathetic. Also the checkout people have MAJOR attitude. It is frustrating to go here and if you need paper or ink or something easy like that - maybe a new mouse or keyboard then I reccomend it on pricing and convenience only. read more

Good selection of electronics and computer supplies. Prices are the same as what you'd pay on the Internet so if you are in a rush it's convenient. This huge retail computer store sells CPU's cheaper than anywhere else, even eBay, as "loss-leader products", to get people in the door. They have a great no-questions asked policy for returns, and there are lots of staff to ask questions (verify all claims by comparing them to online newegg and amazon product reviews before you buy). The inexpensive maker/hacker/DIY section is amazing. We are truly in a golden age of do-it-yourself electronics. Invent something useful! You can also still get great computer and gaming magazines, and video games in boxes. Perfect. Buy food and drink and snacks at the Trader Joe's across the parking lot, and visit the beautiful tree and grass-covered banks of the (now actually clean) Charles River just across the highway. read more

I took my computer here for repairs. I have a ~4 year-old Dell laptop. Yonas and his team took incredible care of my computer. I told them I relied on the computer for working remotely and as a student. They were able to fix it in a short amount of time and kept costs low. The computer has been working as well as the day I bought it. I can't say enough good things about these guys. Yonas and the tech who worked on my computer, Vilson, also provided tremendous customer service throughout the whole process. They kept me up to date with phone calls about the repairs they were doing, what the computer needed, and price before going through with the repairs. Both the quality of their work and their customer service were outstanding. I would not go anywhere else for computer/tech needs. read more

Very disappointing visit to store to fix hardware purchased only 8 months ago. First, they did not tell me on the phone that I would have to mail it in to manufacturer and they could not service it in the store because product was still under manufacturer's warranty. Then they just checked that it had a charge, which was already apparent. In other words, they plugged it in. Not exactly helpful. Note that I had told them that I had attempted to download pictures from a phone. When I returned home and called the phone number they gave me to get a box and mailing label, I told the technician about the phone download attempt and he suggested that I hold the power plug for 15 seconds. It worked. Seems like the service people in the store could have tried that and sent home a satisfied customer instead of a very annoyed one. read more

Being an aging computer geek, MicroCenter is where I go for my computer needs. I've been a regular customer there since it opened and I do notice that the store has gotten grungier and not as well organized in recent years, Yes customer service is less than stellar, but when I've been able to snag a sales rep (one that speaks English anyway) they have always been very helpful and friendly. I have never encountered high pressure sales people What I do miss is that they no longer seem to carry a full line of their PowerSpec PC's. Two of my prior PCs were high end Power Spec; well made, no proprietary crap and a plus for me, just loasded with the OS. I'm a geek, save me the annoyance getting a machine preloaded with Ouija Board for windows or Micro$oft money, etc etc. On the couple of occasions I had to return something there was a no hassle refund or swap. Getting into and out of the parking lot at Micro Center can be like driving in a demolition derby I only go to places like Best Buy as a last resort. I had a great experience here building my first gaming rig. I was originally going to buy all of the parts online off of NewEgg or TigerDirect. I did some price checking online and found out that they offered components at around the same price, if not CHEAPER than NewEgg. I got my Intel Quad-Core i7 3.06 processor for $50 cheaper! The staff was relatively helpful. If you are looking for someone who knows their stuff about PC's talk to Ed, he was a great help suggesting parts. He took his time to make sure I had everything that I needed, and it definitely made me glad that I had found the mecca of computer components/parts! Other staff members were sort of bored and uninterested *cough* Monitors and Desktop department. They did at least politely ask if I needed help but they weren't too helpful. I was able to build a gaming PC for around $1200 minus any extra things I might have thrown in there like Starcraft 2 and a monitor. I also got $70 in mail-in/online rebates which is pretty sweet. It's like NewEgg, but without the shipping and you can actually see what you're about to purchase! It's like a supermarket for techies, and I spent 30 minutes trying to leave the store because I kept stopping to look at stuff on the shelves. They also have great competitive prices: I got a 16 gig thumb drive (by corsair, my fav thumb drive company) for only 42 bucks! And it's tiny! Totally coming back to this place! read more

This is probably the only remaining big box store in the region where one can purchase a full set of computer components to build a computer. Afterall, CompUSA has gone out of business, Best Buy focuses on entertainment electronics such as TV, and Staples is office supply. The prices here were competitive and the salesperson that we met yesterday was professional (pays attention but not pushy). The only issue I have with this particular place is the parking. With an adjacent Trader Joe's, Starbucks, and other stores, this shopping center's parking area seems inadequate to handle the loads of customers. read more

As other folks have said this is a pretty good bet if you need computer parts in a hurry and you just can't wait for Prime. The downside is the location is extremely hard to get to, the service is very poor and the parking is often hard to find. Particularly if the university folks are in session. If there is an alternative or you can wait a day or two then you may want to reconsider that trip down always-screwed-up Memorial drive. They do have good prices on memory though. Their store brand USB sticks and SDs are quite a bargain. read more

This place is not for everyone. If everyone was like me I would give MicroCenter five stars, but I know for sure that most "normal" people will find this place to be overwhelming. This is not your average store, it does not market to you when you walk in, it will not guide you to buy things that you do/don't need. All of that being said if you need computer components and don't have time to wait for tiger direct or newegg to ship it to you than this is the place for you. The selection is awesome, the sales guys are actually smart, this is not your best buy geek squad guy who doesn't have a clue (I will be writing a review on them soon). One cool thing that I would like to note is that if you purchase something that has a rebate they have a printing station next to the registers and you can get your rebates right there. Normally I would not rate a place of business that I have a problem with, but in this case I will. What I would normally do is just never go back to the store again so as to spend my money at a better store. This time I feel that I need to sound off. I went into to pick up a few items and went to pay only to find that 15 people were already in line ahead of me. This usually would not be a problem except for the fact that there was only one cashier. I spent the next 35 minutes waiting to be checked out. I normally love coming to Micro Center but this was beyond belief this time. In my opinion this was a Managment issue not recognizing the customers all backed up and doing nothing to ease everyone out the door. You've been better and I believe you can do better. read more

Pretty polarized reviews for Micro Center, it looks like. That makes sense: My impression of the place is that if you know what you're looking for and are a giant nerd, it's a great place to go. They have enthusiast-oriented components, usually have a few pretty hot deals on monitors or printers or that sort of thing, and carry things like network cable or USB cables and sell them for some reasonable markup as compared to Best Buy or similar. Then again, if you don't know what you're doing, I'd stay away. The salespeople will straight up lie to you about stuff -- my friends and I have even played a "see who can get lied to the most" game. They're usually not fully egregious lies and are usually easily exposed as futile attempts to upsell, but I can only imagine how many people have been ensnared by that sort of foolishness. I wish there were a better place around, but there really isn't. If you can't wait to buy stuff online, it's a good option. If you don't know what you want/need, though, I'd head elsewhere or at least be sure to bring your nerdy friend(s) along with you. read more

This is the only store I go to if I can't wait to get some computer thing over the internet. Prices, as others have noted, are at least as good as and usually better than Best Buy or whatever, and other places' selections just don't compare. Think an enormous Radio Shack with much better prices. Some of the uniquely good deals I find here are bulk items (CDs, cases, etc.) not usually found at such volumes in stores, and the large section of opened/returned/still-guaranteed itmes at reduced price. (Once saw the very cable I had returned -- was tempted to buy it again at a lower price just because, but I didn't need it.) The customer service, though, frankly sucks. Employees only hover around big-ticket items, which they're eager to move. If you have a question about some random plug or something, good luck tracking someone down. I smell commissions. However, the price and selection and immediate availability of so much keeps me from knocking them down yet another star for it. What can I say? The bottom line is good. read more

I'm pretty surprised by all the negative reviews - because I had a great experience here...but then I did know what I was looking for (and am probably a giant geek :) I went in looking for a new cord for my G4 mac (as mac users know, their cords are awful and after only 3 years, the thing would barely charge. Ok, I am a geek). After seeing the $79 price tag for one electrical cord, I almost fainted. But a lovely employee saw me breathing into a paper bag about to hyperventilate and calmly talked me through some other options. He found me another cord, an adapter (NOT apple) - that would work just as well as the mac cord and was only $29. They didn't have it in the store, so he went online, determined it was only available online - printed out the info for me, and instructed me on the best shipping method. I was in and out in 15 minutes and I got my new cord in about 3 biz days. I got nothin' but love for Micro Center! read more

Geek Mecca. SImply put Microcenter makes a basic assumption, You're a geek. Everything else stems from that assumption. As a geek you know exactly what you want, how it works and what it should cost. You realize what's a good deal, what's a bad deal, and yes you really do know how to build your own cables from the otherwise confusing spools of cables and ends arrayed around the place. If you can't tell a USB cable from a Firewire cable then you're probably going to hate this place. It's like Costco for technarati. Anywhere you have hard drives piled up in bins like produce at the local stop and shop, you know you aren't dealing with a 'consumer friendly' place. You aren't going to find any MAC Geniuses or Blue shirted sales folks with a fiendly smile. You can find help here, but really you either need to know in advance exactly what you're after or bring along a pocket protector pal who does know what you need (and how to install, work, setup, or build it). If you know what you're looking for you can save hundreds, even over internet sites, on some items. Geeks hear angels sing on high when they enter. The average joe hears a little voice inside screaming in horror. It's that kind of place. read more

For someone who doesn't like computers, this place is basically my worst nightmare come true. However, they do have great prices and more selection than you could find in any store I've visited. My husband sent me on a mission to pick up a few select items on a Sunday for his business. He's skilled with technology and gave me a detailed list. As soon as I entered the store, there were dozens of willing salespeople to help me out. Even though I had no idea what I was purchasing, they went through my checklist with me to make sure I had everything I needed. I was very appreciative for the help, and my husband was pleased with the deliveries. As we live 30+ minutes away, it was kind of an all day affair, especially on a Sunday (GOOD LUCK finding a parking spot, with the Trader Joe's weekend warriors out and doing their Sunday Shop!) Hope I don't have to come back here any time soon, but if I do, I know that someone will be able to assist me in locating what I need. read more

Ok, I would give Microcenter 5 stars if it wasn't for the fact that it takes like, 12 hours to get out of the damn place. Seriously, I think I've lost days of my life waiting on line at either Microcenter or Home Depot. Sure, they've got quality merchandise at good prices, but it would be nice they had more than 1 cashier per 1000 customers. I also had a bad experience trying to buy a laptop there. I did my research, knew what I wanted, but the display model was broken and taken off the floor. I asked a sales person for some help to see if there was any way I could see a comparable model or even one that was broken just to get a feel for the keyboard. Instead of making any effort to help me buy what I wanted, he tried to sell me an older model on closeout with a smaller screen and different OS (Micro$oft ME no less. WTF! Why not just sell me a brick for $1k and be done with it). They have updated their gaming section a ton, which is great for videogame dorks like myself. They have a good book selection, which used to be better until the expansion of the videogame selection, which makes my electrical engineering husband kind of bummed out. Their camera selection is good as well, and they have decently priced memory cards. I've found their customer service in this department to outshine that of pretty much every other one, though their prices aren't as competitive as one can find online. But it's a great place to get to fiddle with a new camera before deciding to purchase. They also have some insanely cheap DVDs that no self respecting retailer would sell, like 50 Horror Classics for $10. I bought that because my ex boss's wife was in one of the movies, which I think is pretty neat. I mean, really, it's one of the only computer stores around here unless you want to buy your computer at Best Buy or CompUsa...but I've found their customer service to be even more lackluster and I kinda hate the GeekSquad. read more

I made an effort to support one of the few remaining brick and mortar stores of the type, driving 2 hours round trip, burning gas, and paying tolls. Their website said they had everything I wanted for my PC build in stock, but a couple items were listed as in-store only and I could not order them for store pickup. That should have been a warning sign. I show up and a staff member asks if I need help finding anything, then proceeds to tell me that they don't have one of the items, and almost acts annoyed that I would ask. I guess I was supposed to know that they were out of something that the website still said they have 5 of in stock (I checked in the parking lot). I could have bought the rest of the parts I wanted there, but I just walked out. They don't deserve the business. read more

My MacBook Pro froze up in the middle of studying for midterms. I was able to get in to get it fixed at Micro Center that day. I arrived early for my appointment and Yonas Hailemariam greeted me and helped me right away. Normally these things take a few days to fix but he saw how stressed I was and got a tech to fix it within an hour. He was really awesome and went above and beyond for me. I always feel worse when I come out of the Marietta, GA location. I hate to believe this, but I feel like the combination of older, female, and African American is 3 strikes against me in this place. I had a sales associate standing right next to me while I searched for an item and never say a word, but the next customer coming down the aisle who happened to be a middle aged white male got a hearty, "Hey, how ya doin'? Is there anything I can help you with? Well let me know if you need anything!" It was so blatant that I said, "You looked right past me to offer that guy help when I've been standing here right next to you and I actually WOULD like some help! What's that all about?" She (young, African American, female) said somewhat indignantly, "Oh... I didn't even see you!" My point exactly! I do not seem to fit the profile of someone that should be taken seriously in this store. Today, I was forced to pull out 3 Visa cards which were all declined, and finally put my business purchase on a personal credit card. VERY EMBARRASSING in front of a long line of waiting customers, so I just paid and left. I called Wells Fargo, and they said that they had no record of any transactions being declined today, and in fact, no record of any transactions attempted on any of my cards today. The banker suggested that the sales associate must have inserted the card incorrectly, or that the POS equipment might be faulty, but at no point did he do what I do in my shop which is to say, 'Let me make sure it's not something I'm doing!" He just said, "your card is declined... this one is also declined. Actually, this one is declined too." I pulled out cash, "I can't take cash, card only." Very cold, dry, and unhelpful, the way every encounter I have with every employee always is at Microcenter. I only go there because it's the price I have to pay to my boyfriend to get some Brazilian food around the corner. I don't know what basement game room they get these guys from (and I mean "guys" because I think I've only seen the two female employees there!), but there's a definite frat house vibe here - Microcenter, let's just agree to disagree. read more

Great store with great products, but I can't stress this enough: DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING. You might be saying "Well of course. Who wouldn't research computer components buying them?" Yes, yes, and generally speaking the typical shopper here will know a thing or two about what they're buying. But maybe you went in for a graphics card and you saw they had the next gen card for only a little more. Maybe you went in for 8gb RAM but you liked the price of 16gb for a different brand. Maybe you went in for a new laptop and you were so enticed by the plethora of parts available you decided you wanted to build a PC instead. This happens at a store like this, where there is so much to choose from and the prices are so good. But if this is the case, stand in a somewhat empty aisle away from the absurdly pushy salesmen, and research the products on your phone. Why? Because Micro Center has some of the most grossly incompetent staff to ever grace a specialty store. No matter who it is, no matter which product you're asking about, the staff WILL give you the wrong answer. If they tell you something is compatible with a part you already have, assume it isn't. If they tell you a product doesn't exist, go look online (this happened to me, TWICE). If they give you brand recommendations, go with a different brand. You would think I would have learned my lesson having been in there more than a few times, but I always think "the last few guys were blatantly BSing me, but there's no way I could get burned again." I'm wrong. Literally every single time, I am wrong. Couple this with the staff's overly aggressive sales tactics and it's all-around a somewhat unpleasant shopping experience if you don't know exactly what you want and where it is, make a beeline for that and check out. It's like the reject CompUSA manager is training these guys or something. Pretty much the ideal store for anyone looking to buy or build a computer, among other techy things. read more

Microcenter is my defacto stop for computer parts, cabling, and accessories. It's a little bit disorganized to recommend for large purchases, with computers and monitors on display, but looking like they all got unboxed in a hurry for the shelves. The employees are helpful thanks to a commission system (that's why they keep sticking little white labels on the items you are carrying when you talk to them!), but sometimes a bit mis-guided. This is a store best-suited to those who know what they are looking for. It'll take a few trips to get used to the store layout. While you're there, be sure to venture into the back book-section for great deals on random technical books on the discount shelf. read more

No major gripes here. Knowing what you want helps though. They advertise things like SD and USB memory at below the floor prices but then make them very difficult to find, and the sales staff isn't always that helpful guiding you around. (-1 star) Also, the store's layout is a lot more like a warehouse than an electronics store. Their laptops and TV's are set up well and the Apple section is standard Apple, but other than that, this place is a ridiculous maze. The video game section feels extremely cheap and computer hardware appears almost thrown into random places. (minus another star) All-in-all, MicroCenter is fine for your average purchases, and they tend to have pretty competitive prices as well. This is the very best service department I have ever experienced. My laptop screen was cracked. They sent it to Asus for repair. Asus was too slow and unresponsive. Microcenter had them ship it back overnight and promptly gave me a replacement. Yonas and every single person on his team were professional, courteous, and caring -- and all the more remarkable as I was, oh, let's just say, somewhat prickly. Purchased a 55" with extended warranty and onsite service tv Bluetooth, wifi and keyboard would not work. called for onsite service left messages for manager Arsen Askayan and tech support Chuck would never return calls called again today 3/23/15 they had no managers on staff and said support manager Chuck would have to return my calls there was nothing he (Conner) could do to help me. I would have to take the TV to the Cambridge store (over 1 hour away) despite the fact we purchased the onsite warranty. Will never do business with micro-center again. I was nervous taking my computer to Microcenter, as it sounds like once it gets in the hands of the techs, you never know when you're going to see it again. My experience turned out to be great. I spilled had spilled a cocktail on my beloved lenovo laptop and had to get the keyboard replaced. I contacted two other places to see about fixing it and was turned away because Lenovo parts are notoriously impossible to get. MC is designated repair site for Lenovo computers, so I thought they would have to be able to get parts. I dropped it off on a Weds. evening and was told 8-10 business days. Two whole weeks without my Yoga, in addition to the 10 days of nonuse since I messed it up! The humanity! Well, Saturday morning MC called to tell me the part was in and give me a price. With labor the whole deal was $160, about what I was expecting. They said OK, pick it up on Monday! I couldn't believe it. That means it took them only 3 business days! I was impressed. Picked it up, thanked the techs, and brought my non-vodka soaked laptop home. I haven't had any problems since. read more

I find most of the negative reviews on here pretty amusing. In no way do I want to minimize people's feelings and disregard their customer experience but having been a patron of this store for many years I cannot help but feel that they simply came in "at the wrong time." Although MC is an oasis for people like myself we have to remember that this is a RETAIL ENVIRONMENT. There will be plenty of times when the line is too long and there is only one or two registers open, but if that is the case it likely during peak hours and the store may be short staffed. There will be occasions when the inventory is incorrect and the store may not have--or may have just sold--that one piece of hardware you needed; and of course there isn't "one is the back" because hardware isn't ordered by the pallet! And there will be occasions when you may have to (God forbid) wait a few hours to a few days for a repair that would have taken at least two weeks and shipping fees had you sent it back to the manufacturer. My point is that MC is still a retail store that operates as such and you should not be expecting "those computer guys" to work miracles for you just as you wouldn't expect a car mechanic to turn your nearly totaled car around in a week. Have some sense! I'm also seeing plenty of gripes about hardware that is DOA and that is equally amusing. That's just the nature of the game, guys. I've made far more trips back to MC to replace hardware than I have going to pick things up and I will never blame the retailer for that. The simple fact is that even with every precaution taking during shipping that very delicate piece of silicon and solder you just bought has a pretty good chance of being damaged or malfunctioning somewhere between the factory (outside of the US) to the store (in the US). If you live a fair distance from MC where this becomes a hassle then I suggest asking the very understanding and kind staff to check if that mobo you're dropping $300 at least gives out a beep code when you power it up. Their job is to provide hardware purchased from vendors to their customers and assist them with inquiries, they're not responsible for making sure that you do not have to drive back from Newton/Waltham/Revere/wherever because you decided to not follow through with your due diligence. With all that said: I absolutely love MC and I hope it never leaves. For the simple fact that I can go purchase the hardware on the same day and I will hardly ever pay more than an online retailer. More than likely MC will price match that major online retailer and I have the added benefit of returning any defunct hardware on the SAME DAY rather than shipping it back and waiting again. I understand that my ability to drive from Boston, my hobbies, and experience allow me more freedom to utilize MC more than others but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that MC is a solid retailer with fair pricing policies and generally knowledgeable staff. Micro Center is great for the DIY computer geek. I haven't had much experience with the sales staff, so I cannot recommend going to the store if you do not know what you want in advance. However, if you are looking for computer parts or networking accessories I have found their prices to be competitive with online competition and their selection is excellent compared to any other brick and mortar in the Cambridge/Boston area. Also, I like that I can search their inventory online, reserve an item through their website, and then pick it and pay in the store. This is my preferred way to shop at Micro Center. I would not necessarily go there to browse the aisles, because not everything is attractively priced, but if you are building a new rig I've found nice deals on memory and processors.
